That boundary can make a switch manageable, but it cannot guarantee identical behavior—tool use, streaming, structured output, multimodal input, and usage reporting vary between providers and models.
What provider portability does—and does not—mean
An adapter translates between your application’s internal request and result types and a provider’s API. Your domain code can ask for a task such as generating text or proposing a tool call without depending on a vendor’s SDK objects. When you change providers, you replace or update the adapter rather than rewriting the surrounding business logic.

This is a way to control coupling, not a promise of feature parity. Google describes OpenAI compatibility as a convenient route for supported text workflows, but cautions that the schema does not map one-to-one to Gemini and some features need native APIs or additional handling. OpenAI’s Agents SDK likewise notes differences in provider support for tools, multimodal inputs, structured outputs, and streaming. Google’s Gemini OpenAI compatibility documentation and OpenAI’s model documentation explain these boundaries.
Design an internal contract around your app’s needs
Start with the operations the application actually performs, not an attempt to reproduce every vendor API. A conceptual request might contain normalized messages, the requested output mode, tool definitions, and only the generation settings your application uses. A normalized result might contain text or structured content, tool-call intents, a finish status, usage information when available, and provider/model identity.

Keep vendor-specific settings available through an explicit extension point. If an adapter cannot support a requested capability, report that clearly or apply a documented fallback; do not silently drop the setting or present a provider-specific feature as portable. Google explicitly warns about schema differences and recommends direct integration when full Gemini feature access is needed.
Keep these responsibilities behind the boundary
- Provider selection: Resolve provider and model from deployment configuration or a controlled routing policy. Avoid scattering provider and model identifiers across business logic.
- Request and response mapping: Translate message shapes, options, tool schemas, results, and stream events between internal types and the provider’s format.
- Capability checks: State whether each route supports the features your app needs, such as tools, streaming, structured output, multimodal input, or embeddings. Reject or deliberately degrade unsupported requests.
- Errors and observability: Map common failures to internal categories while retaining provider-specific diagnostics for logs. Preserve provider/model identity and usage metadata when available; do not assume every route returns the same telemetry.
Choose an integration route for the capabilities you need
| Integration route | Good fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Provider’s official SDK | An end-user application that needs provider features and SDK helpers. Google recommends its GenAI SDK for Gemini end-user applications. | SDK dependencies, versions, and provider-specific concepts remain part of the integration. |
| Direct REST or gRPC | A framework, gateway, or integration layer that needs precise dependency control or access to provider API features. | You take on more request validation, typing, and authentication work. |
| OpenAI-compatible endpoint | An existing OpenAI-client workflow that uses features supported by the compatibility layer. For supported workflows, Google says setup can be as simple as changing the base URL and key. | Translation differences and a feature ceiling; native Gemini features may need a separate path. |
| Multi-provider SDK or adapter layer | Your routing or provider needs are not covered by built-in integration points. | This adds another compatibility layer, whose support and semantics depend on the adapter and backend. OpenAI describes its Any-LLM and LiteLLM integrations as best-effort beta integrations in its reviewed SDK documentation. |
The right choice depends on whether the app needs convenience, precise control, compatibility with an existing client, or routing across several backends. Google’s Gemini integration guidance distinguishes the official SDK, direct API access, and OpenAI compatibility. OpenAI’s Agents SDK model documentation describes its integration points and provider differences.

Keep application-owned tools under application control
For tools your application owns, the app should retain responsibility for defining and validating schemas, authorizing and executing operations, and returning results. An adapter can translate a provider’s tool-call representation into a normalized intent; application code then validates arguments and executes the operation according to its own permissions.
- Provide the provider with tool definitions in the format its route expects.
- Translate a returned tool call into an internal intent and validate its arguments.
- Authorize and execute the operation in application code.
- Convert the result into the response format expected by the provider and continue the interaction.
Anthropic documents this client-side schema, execution, and result cycle in its tool-use documentation. Provider-hosted tools are a different integration path: execution occurs on the provider’s infrastructure, with different ownership and usage behavior. Treat them as provider-specific unless each target route supports equivalent behavior.

Build the seam before you need to switch
- Inventory actual operations. List whether the app uses text generation, streaming, tool use, constrained output, images or audio, embeddings, or provider-hosted tools.
- Define internal request and result types. Base them on that inventory. Keep vendor SDK objects out of business logic and persistence formats.
- Put the current provider behind an adapter. Doing this first exposes where your contract is too broad or too narrow before a second provider complicates the design.
- Add another route and record its limits. Mark each required capability as supported, mapped with limitations, or unsupported. Use the provider’s native SDK or API when a compatibility layer cannot preserve required behavior.
- Test the exact provider/model path. Check message mapping, tool arguments and results, stream events and completion, structured-output conformance, usage fields, and provider-specific failures. Compatibility labels alone do not establish feature parity.
- Roll out through configuration. Select models explicitly in production, monitor results, and keep a rollback path. OpenAI recommends explicit model selection rather than relying on an SDK default in its model documentation.
Test behavior, not just whether a request succeeds
A successful API response does not prove that the app can switch safely. Contract tests should exercise the path the application depends on, including tool-call argument handling, stream completion and errors, structured-output validation, and usage reporting. Where a provider lacks a capability, the test should confirm that the adapter reports the limitation or follows the intended fallback.
OpenAI’s SDK documentation notes, for example, that some providers do not support JSON-schema output and that some compatible providers return unreliable incremental tool-call deltas. Those are reasons to test the concrete route and model rather than infer behavior from an API’s compatibility label. See the OpenAI Agents SDK model documentation.

Avoid both abstraction extremes
A lowest-common-denominator interface can hide useful features; an interface that mirrors every vendor API can spread provider complexity through your application. Keep the shared contract small and centered on common application behavior. Expose a provider-specific capability as a named extension or send that operation through a native adapter when needed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAs Google puts it in its partner and library integration guidance: “If you need a significant amount of special-casing, it may be more value to use a dedicated SDK or API for each platform.” The practical test is whether the abstraction makes your app’s ordinary path clearer without concealing meaningful differences.
