A T-bill ladder is a schedule you create by buying Treasury bills with different maturity dates. Instead of committing all of your cash to one maturity, you divide the allocation among bills that come due on a recurring timetable. At each maturity, you can take the proceeds for spending or emergencies, or reinvest them to keep the schedule going.
The ladder is not a special Treasury product. It is an arrangement you build, and the dates you can achieve are constrained by Treasury’s available terms, auction calendar, settlement dates and your account’s procedures.

What a T-bill ladder does
Treasury bills are short-term, electronic U.S. government securities. Available terms are 4, 6, 8, 13, 17, 26 and 52 weeks. A bill is normally bought at a discount to its face value (or, in some cases, at par). If you hold it to maturity, the Treasury pays the face value. The difference between what you paid and the face value is the bill’s interest, and that interest is paid at maturity rather than in periodic coupons.
A ladder turns those individual maturity events into a cash-access schedule. For example, an investor who wants money to become available approximately every month can buy several bills whose maturities are spread across successive months. The result is a series of dates on which a bill’s principal and interest arrive, not a bill that pays monthly interest.

The Treasury does not prescribe one official “ladder” design. Your allocation, preferred access interval and tolerance for committing cash determine the design.
Know the bill terms and settlement constraints
| Term | General Treasury auction cadence | How it can fit a ladder |
|---|---|---|
| 4 weeks | Generally weekly | Very short access cycle; dates can move with auction and settlement timing. |
| 6 weeks | Generally weekly | Useful when a six-week commitment better matches your cash plan. |
| 8 weeks | Generally weekly | Short rung for frequent turnover. |
| 13 weeks | Generally weekly | Quarter-year commitment for a less frequent schedule. |
| 17 weeks | Generally weekly | Intermediate rung between 13 and 26 weeks. |
| 26 weeks | Generally weekly | Half-year commitment for a slower ladder. |
| 52 weeks | Generally every four weeks | Longest listed bill term; fewer annual maturity points. |
These are general patterns, not guaranteed dates. Treasury says financing needs, holidays and special circumstances can alter or delay offerings. Check the official upcoming-auctions calendar immediately before placing an order. An auction date is not necessarily the date your cash becomes available: settlement and maturity dates are the dates that matter to your cash-flow plan.
Start with the cash you can actually commit
Separate operating cash from ladder cash
Keep rent, bills, taxes, an emergency reserve and other near-term obligations in an account designed for immediate access. Put only the amount that can remain committed until the planned maturities into the ladder. A Treasury bill can be sold before maturity, but that is a market sale, not an automatic promise of receiving face value.

Choose an access interval
Decide whether you need a maturity approximately every month, every two weeks, every quarter or on another timetable. Then look at the term menu and calendar. A monthly pattern may require combining terms and selecting different auction dates; the available offerings will not always produce exactly 30-day spacing.
Define the minimum cash event
Decide how much you want available at each maturity. You might want one large annual payment, several equal monthly amounts or a larger amount before a known annual expense. This determines the size of each rung rather than simply dividing money into equal pieces.
Size each rung with a simple cash-flow plan
TreasuryDirect lists a $100 purchase minimum and $100 increments. Your account may show a different order interface, but the TreasuryDirect minimum and increment are the official direct-account figures.
Make a schedule before buying:
- Write the total amount reserved for the ladder.
- List the dates on which cash is needed or should become available.
- Assign a target dollar amount to each date.
- Match each target to an available bill term and an auction whose settlement and maturity dates fit the target.
- Leave a cash buffer for dates that cannot be aligned exactly.
For illustration, suppose $12,000 is available for a six-month plan and the goal is roughly $2,000 of access each month. You could divide the allocation into six approximately $2,000 purchases placed at staggered dates, subject to the actual auction and maturity calendar. If a bill’s purchase price is below its face value, the face value you receive will be slightly greater than the amount paid; calculate each rung using the expected face value and confirm the final amount in the order details. Do not assume that six identical orders will mature on precisely the first day of each month.

If your need is uneven, size the rungs unevenly. A property-tax month, tuition month or insurance-renewal month can receive a larger face value than ordinary months. The ladder should follow your liabilities, not an arbitrary equal-amount rule.

Build the ladder in TreasuryDirect
TreasuryDirect lets you buy bills directly from the U.S. Treasury, hold them to maturity or arrange reinvestment. Use the current TreasuryDirect screens and auction schedule because labels and available offerings can change.
- Open and fund the account. Complete the TreasuryDirect account setup and link the designated bank account used for purchases and proceeds.
- Open the purchase area. Choose the option to buy marketable securities, select Treasury bills and pick the available term and auction.
- Enter the amount. Use the $100 minimum and $100 increments. Enter the face-value amount for the rung you want, then review the estimated purchase price shown for the auction.
- Choose the maturity instruction. You can schedule reinvestment when you place the original order or add it up to four business days before maturity. TreasuryDirect reinvests a maturing bill into another bill of the same term.
- Repeat for later dates. Place separate orders in different auctions so the maturity dates are staggered. Record each CUSIP or security entry, face value, term, auction date, settlement date and maturity date.
- Verify the confirmation. Save the transaction details and compare the final maturity date with your cash calendar.
If you do not give a reinvestment instruction and do not direct the principal to TreasuryDirect’s Certificate of Indebtedness, TreasuryDirect says it deposits the principal to your designated bank account on maturity day. Interest and principal are delivered through the maturity payment rather than through periodic coupons.
Build the ladder through a brokerage account
A bank or brokerage can provide access to Treasury auctions and, in many cases, a secondary market for bills. The exact minimums, order deadlines, reinvestment controls, settlement notifications and sale process are brokerage-specific. Review that firm’s current Treasury-auction documentation before transferring money.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Confirm eligibility and funding. Make sure the account is approved for Treasury purchases and that settled cash will be available by the broker’s stated deadline.
- Find the auction inventory. Select Treasury bills, the desired term and the auction or issue date. Do not assume every broker offers every Treasury term in every interface.
- Enter the face value and order type. Treasury auctions generally use noncompetitive bids for ordinary individual investors; follow the broker’s current instructions rather than assuming the process is identical to TreasuryDirect.
- Set the maturity preference. Some brokers offer automatic reinvestment, while others require a new order for each cycle. Confirm whether reinvestment uses the same term and how many days before maturity changes are allowed.
- Record the position. Save the maturity date, face value, cost, account location and the broker’s instructions for maturity proceeds.
- Repeat across auctions. Buy additional rungs until the calendar provides the desired sequence of maturity dates.
A brokerage may make it easier to sell before maturity, but a secondary-market sale is priced by the market. It is not equivalent to waiting for the Treasury’s maturity payment.
Plan what happens on every maturity date
Take the cash
If the money is needed, allow the bill to mature and direct the proceeds according to your account’s instructions. Check the expected deposit date and bank cutoff rules, especially when a maturity falls near a weekend or holiday.
Reinvest the same rung
If the cash is not needed, reinvestment keeps the ladder operating. TreasuryDirect’s automatic reinvestment is into another bill of the same term. That means a 13-week rung rolls into another 13-week bill rather than automatically changing into a 26-week bill. A broker may offer different controls, so read its terms.
Change the ladder over time
At maturity, you can take only part of the proceeds and use the balance to purchase a new bill, if your account supports that transaction. This lets you increase a future rung, shorten the commitment or gradually move money out of the ladder. Record the new maturity date instead of relying on the original calendar.
Liquidity before maturity: what actually happens
The Treasury states, “You can hold a bill until it matures or sell it before it matures.” A pre-maturity sale is conducted through a bank, broker or dealer in the market. The amount you receive is the current sale price, which can be higher or lower than your purchase price and is not automatically the bill’s face value.

Market rates, time remaining, demand and the intermediary’s procedures affect that price. A sale can also have a different settlement date from the day you submit the order. Therefore:
- Do not count a bill as same-day cash merely because it is marketable.
- Do not assume a sale will preserve the planned interest amount.
- Confirm the intermediary’s quote, settlement timing and any applicable charges before selling.
- Use the ladder’s scheduled maturities for predictable access whenever possible.
Holding to maturity avoids the need to accept a secondary-market price, but it requires you to keep the money committed until that date.
TreasuryDirect or a brokerage?
| Decision point | TreasuryDirect | Bank or brokerage |
|---|---|---|
| Purchase route | Direct purchase from the Treasury through a TreasuryDirect account. | Order through the intermediary’s Treasury-auction or inventory interface. |
| Minimum and increments | TreasuryDirect states $100 minimum and $100 increments. | Check the intermediary’s current requirements; do not assume they are identical. |
| Automatic reinvestment | Can be scheduled at purchase or up to four business days before maturity; reinvests into the same term. | Features and deadlines vary by intermediary. |
| Early sale | Sale requires a bank, broker or dealer; TreasuryDirect itself is not a secondary-market trading venue. | The intermediary may provide a sale function, subject to its market process and settlement rules. |
| Proceeds | If no reinvestment or Certificate of Indebtedness direction is given, principal is deposited to the designated bank account on maturity day. | Follow the broker’s maturity and cash-sweep instructions. |
Neither route makes every maturity date identical, and neither removes the need to track your own ladder. Choose based on the account access, automation and sale procedures you can manage reliably.

TreasuryDirect explains that federal income tax applies to Treasury bill interest and that state and local taxes do not apply. The interest is the difference between the discounted purchase price and the face value paid at maturity. Confusing discount price with maturity value
Problem: The investor records the purchase debit as the amount that will be available later.
Fix: Track both the purchase price and face value. The face value is the maturity payment; the difference is interest.
Assuming reinvestment can change terms automatically
Problem: A 13-week bill is expected to roll into a different term.
Fix: TreasuryDirect reinvests into another bill of the same term. Change the term manually at maturity by directing the proceeds to a new purchase.
Ignoring broker deadlines
Problem: A reinvestment instruction is entered after the broker’s cutoff.
Fix: Put a reminder several business days before maturity and verify the broker’s current deadline and settlement rules.
Treating a sale as guaranteed face value
Problem: The investor sells early expecting the maturity amount.

A maintenance routine that keeps the ladder usable
- Maintain a spreadsheet or calendar with term, face value, purchase price, auction date, settlement date, maturity date and destination of proceeds.
- Review the official auction calendar before adding a new rung.
- Set reminders for the reinvestment or withdrawal decision several business days before each maturity.
- Reconcile the account after each auction and maturity; do not rely only on an old projection.
- Reassess the ladder when your income, emergency reserve or recurring expenses change.
- Keep enough non-ladder cash to avoid selling a bill under pressure.
Worked planning patterns
Approximately monthly access
Divide the committed allocation among several face-value targets and place purchases in successive auctions. Select terms that produce maturities distributed across the desired months. Because the Treasury’s weekly offerings and settlement dates do not guarantee a fixed day of the month, publish the actual maturity dates in your personal calendar and label the schedule “approximately monthly.”
Quarterly access
Use longer terms or fewer, larger rungs so one bill matures about every three months. A 13-week term can be a starting point, but the auction and settlement calendar determines the final date. At each maturity, withdraw the planned amount and reinvest the remainder if the next quarterly need is unchanged.
Known annual expenses
Work backward from each expense date. Choose a maturity that occurs before the payment deadline, allowing time for bank settlement, and assign a face value large enough to cover the bill. Do not schedule the maturity on the same day as a mandatory payment unless your account’s deposit timing makes that safe.
When a ladder is the wrong tool
A ladder may be unsuitable if you need unrestricted same-day access, cannot keep any money committed, or would be forced to sell whenever an unexpected expense occurs. It also requires record-keeping and periodic decisions. In those cases, keep the relevant reserve in an immediately accessible account and use bills only for the portion of cash with a defined holding period.
For a saver who can stagger commitments, track dates and decide at each maturity, the ladder provides a transparent way to create recurring Treasury bill cash events without pretending that bills pay periodic coupons or that early-sale proceeds are guaranteed at face value.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I schedule a TreasuryDirect reinvestment after buying the bill?
Yes. TreasuryDirect says a reinvestment instruction can be added up to four business days before maturity. The replacement bill uses the same term as the maturing bill.
What if my maturity date falls on a weekend or holiday?
Use the maturity and deposit information shown in your account and allow for the applicable business-day timing. Check the current TreasuryDirect or intermediary schedule rather than assuming a calendar-day payment.
