A retirement-income bridge is the cash-flow plan and invested reserve that pays your bills after work ends and before you claim Social Security. Build it from your after-tax spending gap: annual living costs, taxes and health expenses minus pensions and other reliable income, multiplied by the years until your intended claim date. Add a separate emergency and market-loss reserve, then test the plan against bad returns and high inflation.
Delaying benefits can materially increase lifetime guaranteed income. Social Security retirement benefits may begin at 62, are reduced when claimed before full retirement age, and receive delayed-retirement credits through age 70. The credit is 8% per year for people born in 1943 or later; waiting beyond 70 does not increase the benefit. The bridge is what makes that delay affordable without selling investments under pressure.

What a retirement-income bridge actually does
The bridge covers the period between your last paycheck and your Social Security start date. It is not one special account or product. It is a coordinated withdrawal plan using whatever combination fits your household: cash, short-term bonds, taxable investments, traditional retirement accounts, Roth accounts, part-time earnings and pensions.

First, it supplies dependable spending money for a known number of years. Second, it protects the assets that will remain invested after Social Security starts, when your income needs and tax picture change. A bridge can support a claim at full retirement age or at 70; the longer the wait, the larger the required reserve.

Social Security rules establish the basic timing choice. Benefits can start at age 62, but starting before full retirement age reduces the monthly amount. Delayed-retirement credits accrue for each month from full retirement age through age 70 when an eligible person does not receive an old-age benefit. For people born in 1943 or later, the annual credit is 8%. There is no additional increase for delaying beyond age 70.
The larger age-70 payment functions as longevity insurance: it provides more guaranteed income if you live a long time. It is not automatically the best choice. Health, expected longevity, survivor-income needs, pensions, taxes, liquidity and portfolio risk all matter.
Step 1: Choose a target claiming age
Start by comparing at least two realistic dates: full retirement age and age 70. You can also model age 62 if early income is important, but treat the permanently lower benefit as a deliberate trade-off rather than a default.

- Health and longevity: A person expecting a long retirement may place more value on the larger, inflation-adjusted lifetime payment. Serious health concerns can change the balance.
- Survivor income: In a couple, the higher earner’s claiming decision can affect the income available to the surviving spouse. Model the survivor scenario, not only two lifetimes together.
- Other guaranteed income: Pensions and annuities reduce the amount the portfolio must supply and can make delaying easier.
- Portfolio size and risk: A larger, resilient portfolio can fund a longer bridge. A thin portfolio may be damaged by withdrawals during a market decline.
- Taxes and future required distributions: A delay can create years in which traditional-account withdrawals or Roth conversions fit into lower tax brackets.
- Flexibility: Decide how much discretionary spending you could reduce if markets fall or the funded reserve shrinks.
Compare the dates on the same measures
| Measure | Earlier claim | Full-retirement-age claim | Age-70 claim |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly Social Security | Lower because of early-claim reduction | Benefit at full retirement age | Highest available retirement benefit; no increase after 70 |
| Bridge required | Smallest | Moderate | Largest, because more years must be funded |
| Longevity protection | Lower guaranteed income later | Middle outcome | Strongest monthly income for advanced ages |
| Tax and RMD planning window | Shorter | Longer than an early claim | Longest, but withdrawals can increase current tax |
| Liquidity requirement | Lower upfront reserve | Higher reserve | Highest reserve and largest need for contingencies |
The table describes the trade-offs, not a universal ranking. Select a date only after the bridge calculation and stress test show that the household can fund it.
Step 2: Calculate the after-tax gap
Use annual cash needs, not gross salary and not a portfolio percentage. A practical starting equation is:

Annual bridge gap = after-tax spending + income taxes + health costs − pensions − annuities − part-time earnings − other reliable income.
Multiply the gap by the number of years from retirement to the planned Social Security claim. Then model inflation and hold a separate reserve for emergencies, unusually high medical costs and market declines. Do not treat that reserve as money available for ordinary spending.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBuild the annual spending number
- Separate essential costs such as housing, food, utilities, insurance and transportation from discretionary travel, gifts and projects.
- Include health-insurance premiums before Medicare, Medicare premiums and out-of-pocket costs. Health costs can rise differently from general inflation.
- Add the taxes you expect to pay on withdrawals, interest, dividends, capital gains and other income. A spending number stated “after tax” is not complete until the tax funding is included.
- List pensions, annuities, rental income and planned work income conservatively. Use the amount you can reasonably rely on, not an optimistic maximum.
Illustrative calculation
Suppose a household retires five years before its intended claim date. It wants $60,000 a year for living costs, expects $14,000 for insurance and medical spending, and budgets $8,000 for income taxes. A pension supplies $20,000 and part-time work supplies $6,000. The annual gap is $56,000: $60,000 + $14,000 + $8,000 − $20,000 − $6,000. Five years requires $280,000 before inflation, investment losses and contingencies. The household would then add a separately chosen emergency and market-loss reserve rather than assuming the $280,000 is sufficient by itself.
Model inflation instead of multiplying one year’s bill
A flat multiplication understates a long bridge when costs rise. Project each year separately, using an inflation assumption for general spending and a distinct assumption for health costs if appropriate. Recalculate when your spending, work income or claim date changes. A bridge intended to last eight years needs a different reserve from one intended to last three, even if the first-year gap is identical.
Step 3: Give each account a job
There is no universal withdrawal order. The right sequence depends on tax brackets, account basis, market conditions, future required minimum distributions, state taxes, survivor planning and how easily you can cut spending.

| Source | Useful bridge role | Tax treatment and planning issue | Main watch-out |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cash and money-market reserves | Fund near-term bills and the first part of a downturn | Interest is generally taxable; withdrawals do not create a sale of investments | Excess cash may lose purchasing power to inflation |
| Short-term bonds | Provide a planned spending reserve beyond cash | Interest and realized gains can affect taxable income | Bond prices can still fall when rates rise; avoid treating them as risk-free |
| Taxable brokerage assets | Supply flexible withdrawals and help fill selected tax brackets | Capital gains, dividends and interest affect taxes; selling can realize gains or losses | A forced sale after a market drop can lock in losses |
| Traditional IRA or plan | Fund spending or deliberate conversions during lower-income years | Withdrawals are generally taxable except for basis or qualified tax-free amounts | Large withdrawals can push income into higher brackets, increase the taxable share of Social Security later and enlarge or reduce future RMDs depending on the strategy |
| Roth IRA | Tax-diversified spending and a reserve for high-income years | Qualified tax-free distributions generally do not add ordinary taxable income | Using Roth assets first can surrender future tax-free growth and flexibility |
| Part-time work | Reduce portfolio withdrawals and delay claiming | Wages are taxable and can affect the Social Security earnings test before normal retirement age | Income may be uncertain or physically unsustainable |
Coordinate, rather than follow a slogan
A “taxable first,” “traditional first” or “Roth last” rule can fail when applied mechanically. For example, modest traditional-account withdrawals or Roth conversions in a low-income year may reduce later RMD pressure. Conversely, an oversized withdrawal can create a tax spike and make later Social Security more taxable. Keep enough liquid assets for the next withdrawals while deciding which account to tap for the current tax year.
Step 4: Use the bridge for tax-bracket management
Traditional-plan and IRA distributions generally count as taxable income, except to the extent they represent basis or qualified tax-free amounts. Required minimum distributions generally begin at age 73 under current law. The years between retirement and RMD age can therefore be valuable planning years, but only if withdrawals are measured.
Roth conversions and traditional withdrawals
Project taxable income before deciding how much to withdraw or convert. Compare the result with the tax brackets for your filing status after deductions, other income and state taxes. A conversion creates current taxable income; it does not make the tax disappear. The goal is to use available lower brackets without accidentally creating a large bill, an underpayment problem or higher Medicare premiums.
Distributions taken before age 59½ generally face a 10% additional tax unless an exception applies. If you retire early, verify the applicable exception and its conditions before using a retirement account for bridge spending. Do not assume that a general retirement date makes every withdrawal penalty-free.
Account for Social Security taxation
Bridge withdrawals can increase the tax cost of later Social Security. IRS Publication 915 tests provisional income using “one-half of your benefits; plus all your other income, including tax-exempt interest.” For 2025 returns, the base amount is $25,000 for single filers and $32,000 for married couples filing jointly. At higher combined income, up to 85% of benefits can be taxable. Include taxable distributions, capital gains, interest and tax-exempt interest in each year’s projection. These are federal rules; state treatment varies.

Step 5: Treat work income and the earnings test correctly
Part-time work can shrink the bridge, but wages earned before normal retirement age may trigger the retirement earnings test if you are receiving Social Security. The Social Security Administration’s 2026 table lists an annual exempt amount of $24,480 for people below normal retirement age and $65,160 in the year they reach normal retirement age. The withholding formulas are $1 for every $2 above the applicable limit and $1 for every $3 above the limit in the year normal retirement age is reached.
After normal retirement age, earnings no longer reduce the benefit. Social Security recalculates benefits for months withheld under the earnings test. Include the timing of wages, the month you reach normal retirement age and any expected withholding in your cash-flow schedule rather than counting the full advertised benefit.
Step 6: Stress-test the first five to ten years
Sequence risk is the danger that poor returns arrive while you are withdrawing. A bridge that succeeds only under a smooth average return is not robust enough. Run at least a bear-market case and a high-inflation case covering the first five to ten years, when withdrawals have the greatest influence on portfolio longevity.
Stress-test checklist
- Reduce portfolio values early in retirement and continue the planned withdrawals.
- Increase essential expenses for an inflation shock, with a separate health-cost shock if appropriate.
- Delay the recovery of markets rather than assuming losses are immediately reversed.
- Test an unexpected home repair, family support need or medical bill from the emergency reserve.
- Measure the funded ratio: assets available for the bridge divided by the projected remaining bridge cost.
- Set a decision rule in advance, such as cutting discretionary spending or postponing a planned increase when the funded ratio falls.
Manage the reserve during real markets
Hold near-term spending in cash and short-term, high-quality assets so a market decline does not force an immediate sale of volatile holdings. After strong markets, refill that spending reserve according to your written plan. After weak markets, preserve liquidity and reduce discretionary withdrawals if the funded ratio has deteriorated. The objective is not to predict the next market move; it is to avoid making a permanent claiming or selling decision during a temporary shock.
Step 7: Review the plan every year
- Update spending: Replace estimates with the prior year’s actual essential and discretionary costs.
- Refresh income: Recheck pension amounts, work income, annuity payments and the latest Social Security estimate.
- Revalue assets: Record cash, taxable investments, traditional accounts and Roth accounts separately.
- Run a tax projection: Include withdrawals, conversions, gains, interest, tax-exempt interest and any expected Social Security.
- Check health costs: Update insurance premiums, Medicare costs and expected out-of-pocket spending.
- Recalculate the bridge: Count the remaining years to the intended claim date and add the contingency reserve.
- Revisit the claim date: If health, work, markets or family circumstances changed, compare full retirement age and age 70 again before filing.
Once you reach age 70, delaying longer does not increase the retirement benefit, so the annual review should shift from “how long can I wait?” to “how should I coordinate income and taxes now?”

Common failure modes and fixes
Using gross spending
Problem: The plan funds lifestyle costs but forgets taxes and health premiums. Fix: Calculate the after-tax gap and show each income source separately.
Assuming average returns
Problem: A constant-return spreadsheet hides early losses. Fix: Test poor returns and high inflation in the first five to ten years, then define spending adjustments.
Choosing an account order in isolation
Problem: A rigid sequence creates avoidable tax spikes or leaves no tax-diversified reserve. Fix: Coordinate taxable withdrawals, traditional distributions, Roth conversions and Roth spending with future RMDs and Social Security taxation.
Recommended Free Tools
Ignoring the earnings test
Problem: A worker claims benefits while wages exceed the applicable pre-normal-retirement-age limit. Fix: Include the 2026 exempt amounts and withholding formulas in the year-by-year cash-flow schedule.
Forgetting the survivor case
Problem: A couple evaluates only combined income while both are alive. Fix: Model the surviving household’s essential expenses and guaranteed income separately.
Waiting without an exit rule
Problem: The household intends to delay to 70 but has no response if markets fall or health changes. Fix: Write conditions that would cause a claim-date change, spending cut or reserve adjustment, and review them annually.
A decision framework you can use
Delay Social Security when the household can fund the calculated bridge, maintain a separate contingency reserve, tolerate the investment risk and values the larger later-life guaranteed payment. Claim earlier when liquidity is inadequate, health circumstances make a long delay unattractive, or the spending plan would require damaging sales during a downturn. In either case, compare the dates using guaranteed income, survivor needs, break-even longevity, portfolio depletion risk, tax brackets, RMD exposure, Medicare-premium exposure and flexibility to reduce spending.
