Build an accelerator deck as a concise, self-contained leave-behind: explain what you make, whose problem it solves, why the timing is credible, what evidence you have, how the company can become durable, and what the accelerator would help you achieve next. A practical deck has about 10–15 slides before an appendix, although each program’s form and submission limits control the final version.
What an accelerator reviewer must understand quickly
Your deck should make sense without a founder narrating it. A reviewer should be able to answer five questions after a short read:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- What does the company make, and for whom?
- Which painful, frequent or expensive problem does it address?
- What proof shows that customers want the solution?
- Why can this team win now rather than later?
- What specific milestone will accelerator support help unlock?
Write in plain language and state facts directly. Y Combinator’s official application guidance puts it this way: “The best answers are the most matter of fact.” It also warns that “Every unnecessary word in your application subtracts from the effect of the necessary ones.” Those principles apply to every slide: remove adjectives that do not add evidence, define unfamiliar terms, and put the proof immediately below each claim.
Check the target program before designing slides
There is no universal accelerator deck format. Start by reading the current application form and recording its constraints in a working checklist:
#1 Best Overall

- Durable & Non-Slip Design: This Multi-Software Shortcut Mouse Pad features stitched edges to reduce fraying. The non-slip rubber base helps keep it securely in place, and the water-resistant fabric allows for easier maintenance.
- Clear Print Quality: Displays high-resolution printing intended to remain legible through regular use and cleaning
- Required media: deck, product demo, founder or team video, financial information, or other uploads.
- File format, maximum file size, slide-count guidance, character limits and deadline.
- Whether you can update an application after submitting it.
- Stage fit: idea, pre-product, early revenue or growth.
- Evaluation emphasis: team, market, traction, technical insight, social impact or geography.
- Program alignment: which mentors, network or resources match your next milestone.
Techstars’ application preview, accessed October 17, 2026, lists a product demo video, a pitch deck and a team introduction video among its core media items. The same preview asks about the problem, proposed solution, incorporation, industry, team, traction, revenue and funding, monetization, target audience, competitors, competitive advantage, timing, customer acquisition and major milestones. Treat those fields as a content map rather than assuming the deck alone answers every question.
How many slides should an accelerator deck have?
Use 10–15 slides as a starting range, excluding an appendix. The Y Combinator Guide to Seed (2025) gives that range for a coherent leave-behind, not as a rule that every accelerator enforces. A pre-product company may need fewer slides because it has less historical data; a regulated or technically complex company may need an appendix to explain evidence without crowding the core story.
Keep one main claim per slide. Make the title state the conclusion, such as “Clinics lose two hours per referral” rather than “Problem.” Place the chart, screenshot, quote, experiment result or calculation that supports the title directly beneath it. Move detailed calculations, interview notes, technical architecture and secondary customer segments into an appendix.

| Slide | Purpose | Evidence to show |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Company and one-line description | Orient the reader immediately. | What you make, for whom and the immediate problem addressed. |
| 2. Problem | Show why the problem deserves a company. | Who experiences it, how often, cost or risk, and a concrete example. |
| 3. Solution and product | Make the proposed answer tangible. | Workflow, product screens, prototype or a short demo frame. |
| 4. Why now | Explain timing. | Technology, regulation, market condition or behavior change. |
| 5. Target customer and market | Define the initial beachhead. | Customer profile, buying context and transparent market-sizing assumptions. |
| 6. Traction or validation | Show what has been learned. | Users, pilots, retention, revenue, usage, waitlist, interviews or experiments. |
| 7. Business model | Explain how money enters the company. | Payer, price or pricing logic, sales motion and acquisition assumptions. |
| 8. Competition and advantage | Show alternatives and defensibility. | Current substitutes and your distribution, data, technology, insight or execution edge. |
| 9. Team | Connect experience to the problem. | Founder roles, relevant accomplishments and ownership of key work. |
| 10. Milestones | Make the next phase measurable. | Dates or periods, metric targets and the experiment or launch behind each target. |
| 11. Accelerator fit and ask | Explain why this program, now. | Specific introductions, expertise or resources tied to the next milestone. |
| 12. Contact and status | Leave a clear final reference. | Founder contact, current location or incorporation status when requested, and a one-line reminder of the ask. |
You can combine slides when the evidence is thin. Do not create a slide merely to reach a number; a shorter, legible deck is stronger than a crowded one.
What to put on each core slide
1. Company and one-line description
Use one sentence with a verb: “We provide [specific workflow] for [specific customer] so they can [measurable outcome].” Avoid broad labels such as “the future of work.” If the product is not yet built, say what you are building and identify the first user rather than implying a finished product.
2. Problem
Describe a painful, recurring or costly situation from the customer’s perspective. Name the person who encounters it, the moment it occurs and the consequence of doing nothing. A short customer quote can help, but identify its context and date in a footnote or appendix. Do not turn a collection of general industry complaints into proof of demand.
3. Solution and product
Show the smallest useful workflow: input, action and result. A screenshot with three callouts is often clearer than a feature list. If you have only a prototype, label it “prototype” and distinguish shipped behavior from planned behavior. A short demo frame can support the deck, but the application may require a separate video.

4. Why now
Connect timing to a concrete change: a new technical capability, a regulation, a distribution shift or a behavior change. Explain why the change makes your solution possible or newly valuable. Avoid claiming that a large market alone proves urgency; the slide should show the mechanism that changed.
5. Target customer and market
Start with the narrow customer you can reach and serve first. Define the user, economic buyer and buying trigger separately when they differ. Show market-sizing logic, not an unsupported headline number: state the number of potential accounts, an annual price or spending assumption, the geography and the calculation period. Label estimates and assumptions clearly, and put the detailed math in the appendix.
6. Traction or validation
Use the strongest evidence that actually exists. Every metric needs a period, customer segment and source or measurement method. “1,200 users” is incomplete; “1,200 registered users, January–June 2026, with 38% monthly activity among accounts onboarded in that period” is interpretable only if you can substantiate the definitions. Choose a small number of metrics and explain what changed after each experiment.
7. Business model
State who pays, what they pay for and how the transaction occurs. If pricing is still being tested, show the hypothesis and the test rather than presenting a forecast as a fact. Explain the expected acquisition path—sales, partnerships, self-serve or another channel—and why it can reach the initial customer. Techstars’ application questions explicitly cover monetization, customer acquisition and long-term profitability logic, so answer those points directly even when revenue is not yet present.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors8. Competition and advantage
Include the status quo, internal workarounds and adjacent products, not only companies that look identical. Then state the advantage that could persist: a distribution relationship, proprietary data, technical insight, switching-cost structure or unusual execution capability. A two-axis chart is useful only when the axes matter to the buyer; do not place every alternative in a corner marked “we are best.”
9. Team
Give each founder a role and one or two facts that explain why that person can solve this problem. Relevant customer access, technical work, domain experience or previous company-building is more useful than a list of credentials. Make ownership explicit: who leads product, engineering, sales and regulatory work? If a key capability is missing, name the hiring or partnership milestone rather than hiding the gap.
10. Milestones
Set the next measurable checkpoints, such as a number of paid pilots, a retention threshold, a production launch or a regulatory submission. Attach a period and an owner to each milestone. The milestones should follow from the main uncertainty in the business; do not list activities such as “attend events” unless they are tied to a measurable result.

11. Accelerator fit and ask
Ask for specific help connected to the milestones: introductions to a defined customer group, expertise in a regulated market, recruiting support or a technical review. Explain why the target accelerator’s mentors, network or resources are unusually relevant. Avoid generic praise and do not imply that acceptance itself is a strategy.
12. Contact and status
End with the information the application requests, such as founder contact details, incorporation status, location or a concise company description. Keep this slide functional; do not add a second conclusion that repeats the opening claim.
How to present traction when you are pre-revenue
Pre-revenue does not mean evidence-free. Show what you tested, with whom, over what period and what you learned. Appropriate evidence can include:
- Prototype sessions with a defined number and type of users.
- Letters of intent or pilots, with scope and start date.
- Waitlist growth accompanied by activation or interview follow-through.
- Usage of a free or manual version, including repeat behavior.
- Customer interviews, provided you distinguish stated interest from paid commitment.
- Experiments that changed a product, price or acquisition assumption.
Separate observed results from forecasts. A projected revenue curve belongs under “plan” or “hypothesis,” not “traction.” If the honest status is “not yet,” say so and identify the next test that can change it. This is more credible than inventing precision.
Do you need a business plan?
Not necessarily. Techstars Support states: “No business plan is needed for the application process. All you need to do is fill out your online application.” That statement applies to Techstars’ process and should not be generalized to every accelerator. Check the current target program’s form: some may request financial fields, a written plan, or detailed milestones even when they do not ask for a separate business-plan document.

Your deck still needs the essential business-plan logic in compact form: customer, problem, solution, market, business model, competition, team, evidence and next milestones. Put a longer operating plan, financial model or research notes in an appendix or separate file only when the program allows it.
Deck, demo and team video: what belongs where?
Keep the deck focused on the company’s logic and evidence. Use a product demo to show the workflow that is difficult to convey in a still image. Use a team introduction to establish who is building the company and why the founders work together. Do not duplicate a five-minute product explanation across every medium.

Techstars managing directors say there is no minimum requirement and advise founders to be themselves, keep the team video simple and avoid worrying about high production quality. Follow the target program’s current instructions for length, file type and upload method. A clear screen recording and intelligible audio are more useful than elaborate editing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Design and export standards
- Use readable type and strong contrast; test the smallest text at normal laptop size.
- Keep labels consistent for dates, currencies, user counts and percentages.
- Use the same definitions throughout. If “active user” means one logged-in user per month, keep that definition on every chart.
- Give every chart a title that states the finding, and label axes and time periods.
- Use whitespace to separate the claim from its evidence; remove decorative elements that compete with both.
- Export a stable PDF if the application requests an upload.
- Open the exported file, not just the source presentation, and check fonts, links, chart legibility, page order and file size.
- Test the deck on a second device or viewer so a missing font or animation does not hide information.
Keep the editable source and a dated PDF in your records. If the program permits updates, maintain a change log so a revised metric cannot be mistaken for an earlier period.
Common failure modes and fixes
The deck starts with a slogan
Fix: Replace the slogan with a one-line description naming the product, customer and problem. A reviewer should know what the company does before seeing a market-size chart.
Every slide is a feature list
Fix: Show the customer workflow and outcome. Features belong only when they explain a meaningful advantage or a tested result.
Forecasts are presented as traction
Fix: Label forecasts as assumptions or plans, then show the observed experiment, user behavior or payment that supports—or challenges—the forecast.
The market number has no calculation
Fix: Show the customer count, price or spend assumption, geography and period. Put the arithmetic in the appendix and mark uncertain inputs.

- Comfortable Non-Slip Grip:The ergonomic pen barrel has a soft rubberized coating for a comfortable, non-slip grip, so you won't get fatigued even after long hours of writing.
The team slide is a résumé wall
Fix: Tie each founder’s experience to a company risk and show role ownership. Include a gap and a plan when a critical capability is absent.
The ask is vague
Fix: Name the milestone, the help required and the expected result. “We need support” is not an actionable request.
The PDF breaks after export
Fix: Reopen the final PDF, inspect every page, verify hyperlinks and fonts, and confirm that charts remain legible at ordinary viewing size.
Tailor one core deck to different accelerator applications
Maintain a factual core deck, then adjust emphasis and order for each program. Use these comparison axes:
| Axis | Questions to answer | How to adapt the deck |
|---|---|---|
| Stage fit | Is the program aimed at idea, pre-product, early-revenue or growth companies? | Emphasize experiments and founder insight at idea stage; retention, revenue and repeatable acquisition at later stages. |
| Required materials | Does the form require a deck, demo, team video, financial information or another file? | Assign each fact to the medium where it is clearest and avoid repeating the same narration. |
| Evaluation emphasis | Is the program focused on team, market, traction, technical insight, impact or geography? | Move the strongest relevant evidence earlier and define terms used by that evaluator. |
| Program alignment | Which mentor, network or resource maps to your next milestone? | Replace generic praise with one concrete connection and a measurable intended outcome. |
| Submission constraints | What are the character limits, file format, slide guidance, deadline and update rules? | Prepare a compliant export and shorten text before shrinking type. |
Techstars says applications differ by company stage and that there is no minimum requirement; its managing-director guidance says, “There isn’t a ‘minimum’ requirement. Each application is different.” Use that as a reason to answer the actual form rather than copying a celebrated company’s deck.
Final submission checklist
- Read the current application form and record every required field and upload.
- Write the one-line company description in plain language.
- Choose the 10–15-slide core sequence, excluding appendix material.
- Give each slide one claim and place its evidence directly beneath it.
- Label every metric with period, segment and definition.
- Separate observed results from assumptions, forecasts and plans.
- Show the status quo, alternatives and a specific durable advantage.
- Connect founder roles and experience to the company’s risks.
- Set measurable next milestones and a specific accelerator-related ask.
- Prepare any required demo or team video as a separate, simple asset.
- Export the requested file format and inspect the final file on another device.
- Submit only after checking names, dates, currencies, links, contact details and consistency across the form, deck and videos.
The finished deck should leave a reviewer with a clear model of the company, the evidence supporting it and the next uncertainty to resolve. Anything that does not improve that understanding belongs in the appendix—or should be removed.
