How to Block UPI and Report an Unauthorized Transaction in India

If a UPI debit was not authorized by you, contact the bank that holds the debited account immediately through a verified phone number, banking app, website, or branch. Tell the bank it is an unauthorized UPI transaction, ask it to protect your account and UPI access, register a fraud or dispute complaint, and give you the complaint reference. Save the transaction ID or RRN, amount, date, time, recipient details, alerts, and every bank reference. NPCI routes fraudulent, unidentified, and unauthorized UPI complaints to the customer’s bank, even when another UPI app was used.

What to do first after an unauthorized UPI debit

Speed matters because the bank needs a clear record of when you noticed the debit and what protection you requested. Work through these steps in order, using only contact details you obtain from your bank’s official app, card, account statement, website, or branch.

1. Call or message the bank holding the debited account

Start with the bank account from which the money was debited. Do not start with the UPI app’s general customer-service channel if you can reach the bank directly. State plainly: “I am reporting an unauthorized UPI transaction from my account.” Ask the bank to secure the account and UPI access, open a fraud or dispute complaint, and explain the next verification steps.

NPCI’s complaint guidance identifies the customer’s bank as the redressal channel. Its complaint facility routes the case to the relevant member institution, which is responsible for resolving it. This remains the route even if the payment was initiated in a third-party UPI app.

2. Preserve the transaction record

Before an app screen changes or an alert is deleted, copy the transaction details. Keep screenshots or a written record in a secure place. You should have:

  • the debited account and bank name;
  • the amount and currency;
  • the transaction date and time;
  • the UPI transaction ID or RRN (retrieval reference number);
  • the displayed recipient name, UPI ID, or merchant description;
  • bank SMS, email, or in-app alerts; and
  • the bank’s complaint or service-request reference.

NPCI’s complaint form asks for the bank, transaction date, transaction number or RRN, account number, and amount. Having the same information ready reduces delays when the bank asks you to verify the debit.

3. Request immediate UPI and account protection

Ask the bank exactly how it will stop further unauthorized activity. Depending on the bank’s systems and its assessment of the incident, it may need to disable UPI, secure the account or mobile-banking registration, review linked devices, or recommend other account safeguards. There is no single blocking procedure that applies to every bank.

Do not assume that uninstalling a UPI app, deleting its data, changing phones, or removing a SIM automatically removes the bank-side UPI registration. Those actions may be relevant to a compromised device, but they do not replace a bank report and a request for account-level protection.

4. Protect your authentication details

Never disclose a UPI PIN or OTP to a caller, chat agent, screen-sharing participant, or person claiming to be bank support. NPCI explains that the UPI PIN authorizes bank transactions and says BHIM support will never ask for it. A legitimate investigator can identify your complaint without asking you to reveal the PIN itself.

If your phone, SIM, email, mobile-banking password, or UPI credentials may also be compromised, tell the bank during the first report. Ask for incident-specific instructions rather than guessing which credential to reset first.

5. Record what the bank tells you

Write down the time of contact, channel used, agent or branch details when available, complaint number, promised follow-up, and any requested documents. Keep the record with the transaction evidence. If you later use another official channel, give the existing complaint reference so the reports can be connected.

Can a UPI payment be stopped after it is sent?

Usually, no. NPCI’s UPI FAQ gives the direct answer: “No, once the payment is initiated, it cannot be stopped.” Treat a completed debit as a dispute and security incident, not as a payment that can be cancelled from a menu.

Reporting immediately is still important. The bank can investigate the transaction, protect the account, and explain the applicable dispute process. However, the fact that you reported the debit does not by itself guarantee a reversal, reimbursement, or a particular outcome. Do not promise yourself that the money will be returned, and do not delay the report while trying to find a cancellation button.

Which channel should you use?

Use channels that are both official and connected to the affected account. The bank is the primary redressal route; an app feature can supplement the bank record, but it does not replace it.

Channel Best use What to provide or request Important limit
Account-holding bank’s phone, app, website, or branch Report the unauthorized debit, secure access, and open the formal complaint Transaction ID or RRN, amount, date, recipient details, account information, and a request for a complaint reference This is the primary route identified by NPCI; procedures differ by bank
UPI app’s transaction-help or grievance feature Add the transaction to the app’s support record and obtain its case number Select the specific transaction and describe it as unauthorized Do not let an app case substitute for reporting to the bank
Current official government or police reporting channel Make any additional fraud report required for your circumstances Use only instructions and contact details published by an official government or police source The applicable hotline, portal workflow, and deadlines are not established here; verify them before relying on them

NPCI’s 23 November 2017 UPI complaints-handling circular says that when a customer raises an issue through a call centre, social media, branch, email, or another channel, the customer’s bank should acknowledge the complaint regardless of which payment-service-provider app the customer uses and take necessary steps to address it. That means an app choice should not prevent you from opening a bank complaint.

How to ask the bank to block UPI

“Block UPI” can mean several different protections. Explain the incident and ask the bank which of these it can apply to your account:

  • temporary suspension of UPI transactions;
  • removal or re-registration of a compromised mobile number or device;
  • protection of the mobile-banking or internet-banking profile used to manage UPI;
  • review of linked accounts, mandates, collect requests, or recently added beneficiaries; and
  • other account safeguards recommended by the bank’s fraud team.

The bank may need to authenticate you before making changes. Follow the bank’s verified process, but never send the UPI PIN or an OTP to an employee or caller. If the bank tells you to visit a branch or complete a particular form, ask whether the existing complaint reference will remain attached to the request.

App controls are not the same as bank-side blocking

NPCI’s BHIM information describes features such as viewing transaction history, managing a UPI PIN, selecting a linked account, and blocking users who send illicit collect requests. Those controls can help you review activity or manage an app, but they do not replace a report to the bank after an unauthorized debit. A setting that blocks a user or removes an app profile should not be presented as proof that the underlying bank account is protected.

What evidence to capture before it disappears

Capture the transaction’s confirmation page, account statement entry, and every alert related to it. If the recipient name or UPI ID is displayed, preserve it exactly as shown; do not “correct” spelling in your notes. Record whether you recognized the device, app, request, or person associated with the payment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Also note facts that may help the bank investigate:

  • when you last made a legitimate UPI payment;
  • whether you received an unexpected collect request or payment link;
  • whether anyone asked for your PIN, OTP, screen access, or a remote-support session;
  • whether your phone, SIM, email, or banking password was lost, replaced, or behaving unusually; and
  • the exact time you first noticed the debit and reported it.

Do not edit screenshots or forward authentication messages to unverified contacts. Provide copies through the bank’s instructed channel and keep the originals.

A practical script for the first bank contact

Use a short, unambiguous description so the agent does not classify the call as a routine payment question:

“I am the account holder. I did not authorize this UPI debit. It is for [amount] on [date and time], transaction ID or RRN [reference], shown as [recipient or UPI ID]. Please secure my UPI and account access, register an unauthorized-transaction or fraud complaint, tell me what further controls are required, and provide the complaint reference.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Replace the bracketed fields with the real details. Do not include your UPI PIN or OTP in a message, email, screenshot, or form unless the bank’s official process explicitly asks for a different, non-secret identifier; a PIN or OTP should never be disclosed to a person.

If the debit came through a different UPI app

Report it to your account-holding bank even when the payment appears in another company’s UPI app. NPCI’s guidance says the bank should handle complaints irrespective of the payment-service-provider app used. You may also use the app’s transaction-specific complaint option to create a second record, but include the bank complaint reference in any follow-up.

Do not move between apps hoping one of them can reverse the payment. The bank that holds the debited account is the institution NPCI identifies for redressal and account protection.

If your phone, SIM, or credentials may be compromised

Tell the bank this is more than an isolated unknown debit. Explain whether the phone was lost, the SIM was replaced unexpectedly, the device was shared, a remote-access tool was installed, or a password or PIN may have been exposed. Ask what the bank wants secured first and whether it needs to disable UPI or mobile-banking access while it investigates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not rely on a phone change alone. A new handset does not automatically remove a bank-side registration, and deleting an app does not prove that no other channel can initiate a transaction. Let the bank confirm which access paths have been disabled or re-registered.

Common mistakes that weaken a complaint

  • Waiting for a cancellation option: NPCI says an initiated payment cannot be stopped, so report the debit instead of delaying.
  • Calling an unverified number: Use the bank’s official app, card, statement, website, or branch to obtain contact details.
  • Sharing a PIN or OTP: Bank support does not need the secret that authorizes transactions.
  • Reporting only to the app: Open the case with the account-holding bank as well.
  • Failing to save the reference: A complaint number lets you track follow-up and connect later contacts.
  • Assuming recovery is guaranteed: A report starts an investigation; it is not a promise of reversal or reimbursement.
  • Describing several unrelated events as one: List each unauthorized debit separately with its own amount, time, and transaction reference.

How to organize multiple unauthorized transactions

If there is more than one debit, make a chronological list rather than sending a paragraph with mixed details. Use one line per transaction and include the amount, date, time, recipient, transaction ID or RRN, and the alert that proves it. Tell the bank whether the entries appeared before or after you first reported the incident.

Transaction Amount Date and time Recipient or UPI ID Transaction ID/RRN Alert or evidence saved
1 As shown by the bank As shown by the bank As displayed As displayed Screenshot, SMS, email, or statement
2 As shown by the bank As shown by the bank As displayed As displayed Screenshot, SMS, email, or statement

The table is for your records; do not invent a missing value. If the bank’s form does not accept every item, ask how to attach the remaining transaction list to the existing complaint.

What is and is not established about reimbursement

The available NPCI material establishes the bank complaint route and the fact that an initiated UPI payment cannot simply be stopped. It does not, by itself, establish a universal reimbursement promise, a single reporting deadline, or the current customer-liability rules that apply to every unauthorized UPI case.

Those outcomes can depend on facts the bank must investigate, including how the transaction was authenticated and whether other credentials or devices were compromised. Ask the bank for the applicable dispute process and written explanation of any decision. Do not rely on an internet post that states a deadline or guaranteed refund without checking the current official rule for your bank and circumstances.

When to use an additional official fraud-reporting channel

A bank complaint is the first step identified in NPCI’s guidance. You may also need to report the incident to a government or police service, particularly if the bank instructs you to do so or the event involves a stolen phone, SIM, identity misuse, or other crime.

Because contact numbers, web portals, and submission rules can change, verify those details on a current official government or police website before using them. Do not trust a number sent by the person who contacted you about the transaction, and do not postpone the bank report while searching for a national hotline.

After the bank opens the complaint

Keep the complaint reference, transaction evidence, and all correspondence together. Respond to verification requests through the bank’s official channel, and check that any later debit is added to the same incident or separately recorded. If the bank asks you to change credentials, complete the change through the official app or website rather than a link supplied in an unsolicited message.

Continue monitoring account alerts and statements while the investigation is open. If another unrecognized debit appears, report it immediately with its own transaction details and mention the earlier reference. Never provide a PIN or OTP to “speed up” an investigation.

A concise decision path

  1. Unknown debit visible: capture the transaction page and alert.
  2. Bank identified: contact that bank through a verified channel and say “unauthorized UPI transaction.”
  3. Complaint opened: obtain and save the complaint reference.
  4. Further access at risk: ask the bank what it will disable or secure, including UPI, mobile-banking registration, device, or linked-account access.
  5. App involved: file the transaction-specific app complaint as an additional record, not as a replacement for the bank complaint.
  6. Crime or device compromise suspected: follow current instructions from an official government or police channel after the bank report.
  7. Follow-up needed: use the saved reference, transaction list, and evidence; do not send secrets.

Questions to ask before ending the first call

  • What protection has been placed on my UPI or account access?
  • Is UPI temporarily disabled, or do I need to complete another step?
  • What is my complaint or dispute reference?
  • Which documents or transaction details must I submit?
  • How should I report another debit if it appears?
  • Which official channel should I use for follow-up?

Writing down the answers prevents an urgent call from becoming an undocumented conversation and gives the next bank representative a precise starting point.
