The most reliable way to avoid AI-cloud lock-in is to make migration a tested capability before you commit production-scale spending. Use upstream-conformant Kubernetes and standard APIs as the portability contract; package software as OCI containers; keep infrastructure, policy, data, and observability exportable; isolate GPU- and network-specific integrations; and regularly redeploy a representative workload on a second environment.
This approach treats portability as a financial control as well as an engineering preference. A platform that is cheap at launch can become expensive when egress fees, proprietary schedulers, unavailable GPU capacity, non-transferable security controls, or a long migration project leave you with no practical alternative.

What vendor lock-in looks like in an AI cloud
Lock-in is not simply using a provider’s dashboard. It occurs when moving a workload requires rewriting application code, changing data formats, replacing security controls, or accepting a long interruption because essential functions depend on proprietary services.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSpecialized AI clouds add extra exposure because the software and hardware stack is tightly coupled. A training or inference system may depend on a particular GPU model, driver branch, CUDA and NCCL versions, interconnect topology, scheduler, container runtime, model registry, object-storage API, and telemetry pipeline. A seemingly portable Kubernetes manifest can still fail if it relies on provider-only custom resources, annotations, admission policies, or node labels.

The financial symptoms are measurable:
- You cannot move a workload without paying a large one-time data-transfer bill.
- A second provider cannot reproduce the required GPU topology or performance.
- Engineers spend weeks translating proprietary infrastructure resources.
- Security or compliance controls cannot be exported with the workload.
- Outages become more costly because capacity is available in only one place.
- Contract renewal is negotiated without credible alternatives.
Portability does not mean every workload performs identically everywhere. It means you know what must change, how long the change takes, what it costs, and which capabilities are genuinely unique.
Why Kubernetes and standard APIs should be your portability contract
Require an official CNCF-certified upstream Kubernetes version, unrestricted access to core APIs, and no mandatory proprietary extensions. NVIDIA’s AI-cloud requirements state that core functionality must remain portable to other standard environments. Its GB300 requirements further call for no proprietary lock-in of CNI, ingress, CSI, or scheduler, with upstream and open-source implementations remaining usable.
That requirement is more specific than asking whether a vendor “supports Kubernetes.” Put the following in your technical and commercial evaluation:
Recommended Free Tools
- Core objects: Deployments, StatefulSets, Jobs, Services, ConfigMaps, Secrets, ServiceAccounts, admission webhooks, and projected service-account tokens must work through standard Kubernetes APIs.
- Version policy: The provider should publish supported upstream versions, deprecation timelines, and a process for adopting new conformant releases.
- Plugin interfaces: CNI, CSI, ingress, service discovery, and scheduling should use portable interfaces rather than mandatory proprietary replacements.
- API access: You need ordinary Kubernetes API access for automation, backup, policy validation, and recovery—not only a graphical control plane.
- Extension inventory: Every required custom resource definition, annotation, operator, and admission rule must be documented with an equivalent available elsewhere or a stated migration task.
A provider can offer a conformant cluster while still creating lock-in above the cluster layer. Evaluate the complete application platform, not the Kubernetes label alone.
Keep each portability boundary explicit
Application and image layer
Build OCI-compliant images with pinned operating-system packages, language dependencies, and model-serving libraries. Generate a software bill of materials (SBOM) for every release and use reproducible build inputs where practical. Store image manifests and artifacts in a registry you control or can export without provider-specific metadata.
Document CPU and GPU assumptions in the image and deployment configuration. A container that starts on one accelerator may fail on another because of an unsupported compute capability, driver mismatch, or missing runtime hook. Separate those assumptions from business logic so the application can be rebuilt for a different node pool.
Infrastructure and policy layer
Represent clusters, node pools, identities, network rules, storage classes, and policies as declarative infrastructure-as-code. Prefer standard Kubernetes resources and portable modules. Keep provider-specific resources in small, replaceable modules rather than scattering them through every service definition.

Accelerator and software-stack layer
Treat the GPU stack as a portability boundary. Record the GPU model, driver version, CUDA and NCCL versions, container runtime, topology, scheduler behavior, firmware assumptions, and benchmark conditions. Version these records alongside application releases.
Use replaceable accelerator node pools. Keep GPU-specific scheduling constraints, device-plugin settings, topology hints, and performance tuning in isolated overlays. This lets you change an accelerator generation or provider without rewriting the entire platform.
Model-weight distribution also matters. Keep a canonical, exportable copy of weights and tokenizer files, with checksums and licensing records. If a provider’s model registry uses an exclusive format or inaccessible metadata, migration can be blocked even when the container itself is portable.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Data layer
Use exportable object and database formats. Maintain independent encryption keys where possible, and test restoration into an environment that is not the production provider. A backup that can only be restored through a proprietary service is not an exit plan.
Create a written egress-cost and egress-time model. Include the size of training datasets, checkpoints, container layers, logs, feature stores, and backups; the provider’s egress price; available transfer bandwidth; and any throttling or retrieval fees. Record whether data must cross a jurisdictional boundary.
Networking and storage layer
Prefer portable CNI, CSI, ingress, and service-discovery interfaces. Record every provider-specific annotation, CRD, load-balancer behavior, firewall rule, and storage option. For each one, identify a standard replacement or a migration change.
Do not assume that a persistent-volume claim has portable semantics. Storage classes can differ in block size, snapshot support, encryption, expansion, consistency, and failure behavior. Test application recovery from an exported snapshot or logical backup on the target platform.
Identity, observability, and policy layer
Use interoperable OIDC or SPIFFE-style identity where feasible. Export logs, metrics, traces, dashboards, alert rules, and audit records to systems you control. Preserve timestamps, labels, trace context, and retention requirements so an incident remains investigable after a move.

How to evaluate a specialized AI-cloud vendor
Ask for evidence, not marketing language. The following checklist can be attached to a request for proposal and scored by engineering, security, finance, and legal teams.
Platform conformance
- Which CNCF-certified upstream Kubernetes versions are available today?
- Can customers use core APIs without mandatory proprietary extensions?
- Are standard Deployments, Secrets, ServiceAccounts, admission webhooks, projected tokens, and network policies supported?
- Can customers run upstream or open-source CNI, ingress, CSI, and scheduler implementations?
- What custom resources and annotations are required for ordinary GPU workloads?
GPU lifecycle and capacity
- Which GPU models, driver branches, CUDA and NCCL versions, and interconnect topologies are offered?
- Who controls driver upgrades, and how much notice is provided?
- Can you pin a tested stack while validating a newer one?
- What are the capacity guarantees by region, accelerator type, and reservation term?
- Can a workload run on a different accelerator or only on one proprietary configuration?
Data, export, and deletion
- Which object, database, registry, and model formats can be exported directly?
- What are egress prices, transfer limits, retrieval charges, and expected throughput?
- Can you use your own encryption keys, and can keys be rotated or withdrawn independently?
- What deletion evidence is provided for primary data, replicas, snapshots, and backups?
- Can the provider support a customer-controlled restore test?
Security and operations
- Can logs, metrics, traces, alerts, and audit records be streamed to destinations you control?
- Which OIDC, workload-identity, certificate, and policy interfaces are supported?
- What is the incident-access process, including access to relevant control-plane and tenant logs?
- What tenant-isolation technology, vulnerability response process, and maintenance notice periods apply?
Contract terms
- Negotiate data-export rights, deletion timelines, incident access, notice periods, capacity guarantees, and support for upstream Kubernetes versions.
- Specify assistance with migration, including technical contacts, documentation, and reasonable access during an exit.
- Define what happens to reserved capacity, prepaid commitments, support credits, and data-transfer charges if you leave.
Run a portability test before production scale
A migration plan is credible only when it has been exercised. Test a representative inference or training slice on a second environment before committing to large reservations or building provider-specific automation.
- Choose a representative slice. Include the production image, model weights, tokenizer, data-access pattern, GPU count, networking path, observability agents, security policies, and failure recovery procedure. A toy container proves little.
- Freeze and inventory dependencies. Capture image digests, SBOMs, Kubernetes manifests, CRDs, annotations, node labels, driver and CUDA versions, NCCL settings, secrets references, storage classes, and external services.
- Export data and artifacts. Transfer a realistic dataset sample, checkpoints, container layers, configuration, and telemetry. Record transfer time, throughput, egress charges, and any format conversion.
- Provision the alternate substrate declaratively. Use the same infrastructure-as-code and policy definitions where possible. Record every provider-specific change instead of allowing manual drift.
- Deploy and validate security. Confirm identity bindings, network restrictions, encryption, secrets delivery, image provenance, audit logs, and alerting before running workload data.
- Measure performance and behavior. Record throughput, latency, GPU utilization, memory use, scaling time, checkpoint time, failure recovery, and model accuracy. Compare variance against an agreed tolerance rather than expecting identical numbers.
- Exercise failure and restore. Delete a worker, lose a node, restore a volume or database, and rebuild from exported artifacts. Measure the time to regain service and the manual effort required.
- Write the exit record. Store the exact commands, manifests, version pins, exceptions, costs, and missing capabilities. Assign owners and deadlines for every blocker.
Repeat this test after major GPU, Kubernetes, storage, or identity changes. Portability decays when an unrecorded platform feature becomes part of normal operations.
Measure portability as a financial and operational metric
Use a scorecard that makes trade-offs visible to budget owners. Compare providers on the following axes:
| Axis | Evidence to collect | Why it affects exit cost |
|---|---|---|
| Upstream Kubernetes conformance | Certified version, upgrade policy, unrestricted core APIs | Determines how much cluster configuration can be reused |
| Standard plugins and APIs | CNI, CSI, ingress, scheduler, identity, and service-discovery interfaces | Reveals replacements that may require redesign |
| GPU lifecycle | GPU models, driver and CUDA/NCCL support, topology, pinning options | Controls performance variance and retraining work |
| Data export and egress | Formats, transfer speed, prices, retrieval limits, deletion proof | Sets the direct cost and duration of a move |
| Observability and policy portability | Exportable logs, metrics, traces, alerts, RBAC, and admission policy | Determines whether operations and compliance survive migration |
| Geographic capacity and residency | Regions, accelerator availability, reservation terms, residency controls | Limits practical alternatives during a shortage or outage |
| Tenant isolation | Isolation model, confidential-computing support, attestation behavior | Can make a destination unacceptable for sensitive workloads |
| SLA and support | Uptime, capacity commitments, maintenance notice, migration assistance | Changes the risk of operating a second environment |
| Measured redeployment | Restore time, throughput, accuracy, variance, labor, and total transfer cost | Turns theoretical portability into a budgetable number |
Track at least five figures from each test: time to restore service, performance variance, data-transfer cost, observability gaps, and engineering hours. A destination that is technically compatible but takes six weeks and a large team to operate may not be a realistic fallback.
Preserve security when workloads move
Portability cannot come at the cost of exposing model weights or customer data. If confidential computing is required, verify the complete trust chain on every target: supported CPU and GPU trusted-execution environments, runtime versions, attestation services, key-release policy, and the handling of upgrades and failures.
NVIDIA’s confidential-computing reference architecture describes delivering encrypted model weights to a customer-controlled environment and decrypting them only after remote attestation verifies the hardware, guest, runtime policy, and GPU state. Confidential Containers run standard Kubernetes pods inside lightweight confidential virtual machines using Kata Containers. This preserves the Kubernetes operating model while changing the trust boundary.

For a portable design, keep attestation policy and key-release rules documented and testable. Confirm that a second provider can produce the evidence your key broker requires. If keys are released only to one provider’s proprietary attestation service, encryption has become another form of lock-in.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use industry adoption data without mistaking it for a guarantee
Kubernetes is a useful portability baseline because it is widely deployed, but adoption does not prove that any individual service is portable. The Cloud Native Computing Foundation’s 2025 Annual Cloud Native Survey reported that 82% of container users run Kubernetes in production and that 66% of organizations hosting generative AI use Kubernetes for some or all inference workloads. CNCF also reported nearly twice as many certified Kubernetes AI platforms in March 2026 as at the program’s November 2025 starting point.
These figures indicate a growing ecosystem of compatible platforms. They do not eliminate differences in GPU supply, storage behavior, identity, data-transfer economics, or operational quality. Your measured redeployment remains the decisive evidence.
Common failure modes and fixes
“It runs in a container, so it is portable.”
Failure: The image depends on a driver, runtime hook, GPU architecture, or proprietary registry feature.
Fix: Pin and document the complete accelerator stack, export the image and SBOM, and run the image on a second GPU environment.
“The provider supports Kubernetes.”
Failure: Production manifests require proprietary CRDs, annotations, CNI behavior, ingress controllers, or schedulers.
Fix: Inventory every extension, isolate it in overlays, and require upstream or open-source alternatives for core functions.

A practical governance cadence
Assign one owner for portability and review it at the same level as reliability and security. Maintain a dependency register covering APIs, plugins, GPU components, data formats, identities, observability, and contracts. Mark each dependency as standard, replaceable, or provider-specific.
At every major release, update the register, rebuild the SBOM, verify image and model exports, and run a smaller alternate-environment smoke test. At least annually—and before renewing a large capacity commitment—repeat the full redeployment exercise. Escalate any increase in restore time, egress cost, manual steps, or missing security evidence.
Set a business threshold in advance. For example, management may require a tested recovery environment within a defined number of days, a maximum transfer budget, and an agreed performance range. The exact limits depend on the workload, but writing them down prevents a provider-specific convenience from quietly becoming an irrevocable dependency.
Bottom line for a procurement decision
Select the specialized AI cloud that gives you the best tested combination of capacity, performance, security, and economics—not merely the lowest initial GPU price. Require upstream Kubernetes and standard plugin interfaces, isolate accelerator integrations, export data and telemetry, negotiate explicit exit rights, and prove the design with a timed redeployment on another environment. When migration has a documented cost, duration, and recovery procedure, the provider must compete on value instead of control over your workloads.
