Refuse overpayment and “duplicate payment” refunds, never share a verification code, keep eligible transactions on the marketplace, and choose a handoff method whose protection rules you understand. These steps address the most common seller-targeting scams identified by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and major marketplaces.
This guide is U.S.-weighted. Payment reversals, seller protections, reporting channels, and local-meeting guidance vary by country, platform, payment method, and transaction type.

The four rules that prevent most seller scams
- Verify payment independently. Open the marketplace or payment service yourself using its official app or a browser bookmark. Confirm the transaction in your account before shipping or handing over the item. A buyer’s screenshot, forwarded email, payment alert, or claim that money is “pending” is not proof.
- Never accept an overpayment arrangement. Do not deposit a check for more than the sale price, refund an alleged duplicate payment, or send a surplus to a buyer, courier, or another person. Real transactions should not require you to move money back before the original payment is unquestionably settled.
- Protect verification codes. A prospective buyer does not need a one-time code sent to your phone to prove you are real. Sharing one can let a scammer connect a phone number or account to your identity.
- Follow the marketplace’s current rules. Seller protection is conditional. A platform may require on-platform messages, its own payment flow, specific tracking, or documented delivery. Moving a sale elsewhere can remove those protections.
How common online-selling scams work
Fake payment notifications
The buyer says payment is complete and sends an email, text, or app-looking image telling you to ship. The notice may use a familiar logo, a forged transaction number, or a link that leads to a fake login page. The objective is to make you release the item before any real payment exists.
Do not click the buyer’s link. Sign in independently to the exact service you used and look for the transaction in your account activity. Check the amount, status, buyer identity as displayed by the service, and any hold or eligibility conditions. If the transaction is absent, do not ship or arrange pickup. If it appears but the buyer asks you to act outside the service’s normal process, contact the provider through its official support channel before doing anything.

Overpayment and duplicate-payment refund requests
A scammer may claim to have paid twice or more than the agreed price, then ask you to return the difference. The “proof” can be a counterfeit receipt or a payment that will later be reversed. Meta’s payment-safety guidance identifies overpayment and refund requests as a recurring pattern; the FTC gives similar advice for sellers.
Do not send a refund based on a message, screenshot, or email. If your official account shows a genuine duplicate or excess payment, ask the payment provider how it wants the error corrected. Do not use a new payment to return money while the original transaction is still pending or reversible.
Fake-check overpayment
In this version, the buyer mails or hands you a check for more than the item’s price and tells you to deposit it, keep your portion, and send the balance elsewhere. The bank may make funds appear available quickly—often within two days—while discovering that the check is counterfeit can take weeks. A temporary balance is therefore not evidence that the check is good.

Do not rely on a bank employee’s statement that funds are “available” as proof of final settlement; ask what the bank’s process is for confirming a check has been collected. If you already deposited one, do not spend the money or send a refund. Contact your bank’s fraud department immediately and preserve the check, messages, envelope, and shipping records.
Verification-code theft
A buyer may say a code is needed to confirm that you are a real person, reserve an item, or release payment. The FTC warns that a Google Voice verification code can be used to create a number linked to your phone number. The same principle applies to one-time codes for email, payment, social-media, or marketplace accounts.
Never read a code to a buyer or type it into a page they provide. A legitimate service sends a code for an action you initiated; it does not require you to disclose it to a stranger. If you shared one, change the affected account’s password, review recovery settings and active sessions, and contact the service through its official support page.

Pressure to leave the marketplace
A buyer may insist on personal email, text messaging, a different payment app, or a direct bank transfer. The reason may be to avoid platform monitoring, bypass identity checks, or make a dispute harder to resolve. Some marketplaces also exclude off-platform transactions from seller protection.
Rules are platform-specific. For example, eBay states that a sale started there must be completed on eBay for its protection programs to apply and warns sellers not to accept overpayments or repay them. That policy should not be generalized to every service. Read the current rules for the marketplace you are actually using before changing communication, payment, or delivery.
A safe selling process, from listing to handoff
1. Set terms before a buyer contacts you
Write the exact price, what is included, shipping or pickup choices, and acceptable payment methods in the listing. A clear price makes an overpayment request easy to reject. Decide in advance that you will not accept checks above the sale price, third-party payments, or requests to refund money to a different account.
Use a seller account protected by a unique password and multifactor authentication. Remove unnecessary personal details from photos and descriptions: house numbers, shipping labels, school uniforms, documents, and vehicle identification numbers can reveal more than a buyer needs.
2. Keep the conversation where the platform can document it
Use the marketplace’s messaging system when its rules require or favor it. Save the listing, buyer username, messages, agreed price, and promised delivery method. Do not allow urgency—“I need it in the next hour,” “my mover is coming,” or “the payment team will email you”—to override your process.

A legitimate buyer can wait while you verify a transaction. Refusal to answer ordinary questions, a newly created account with inconsistent details, or a demand to use an unusual payment route is a reason to stop, not a reason to negotiate harder.

3. Verify the payment in the official account
Open the service yourself. Do not use a link, phone number, QR code, or attachment supplied by the buyer. Confirm that:
- the transaction appears in your account activity;
- the amount matches the agreed price and shipping charges;
- the status meets the service’s requirements for shipment or release;
- the payment is associated with the correct order or buyer; and
- there is no hold, cancellation, dispute, or warning requiring a different action.
Follow the provider’s stated settlement rules. If the account shows no payment, treat the item as unpaid even if the buyer’s message says otherwise.
4. Match shipping evidence to the platform’s requirements
When shipping, use the label and tracking method required for seller protection, if the marketplace specifies one. Address changes sent in a private message can invalidate coverage. Keep the carrier receipt, tracking number, package weight, photographs of the packed item, and the condition of the item before sealing the box. These records do not make a fraudulent payment legitimate, but they can establish what you shipped and when.

First check the marketplace’s current protection terms. If the requested arrangement is outside those terms, cancel rather than improvising.
5. Complete local pickup deliberately
Many sites recommend meeting a local buyer in person and accepting cash. That is general guidance, not a guarantee of personal safety or payment authenticity. Choose a public, well-lit location with other people present, tell someone where you will be, and avoid inviting a stranger into your home. For high-value items, consider a location with visible security cameras or a designated community exchange area.
Count cash and check that it is genuine before handing over the item. If you cannot verify a noncash payment immediately in your own account, postpone the handoff. Do not let a buyer rush you, distract you, or send someone else who was not part of the agreement without first reassessing the transaction.

Local pickup versus shipping
Neither method is universally risk-free. The better choice depends on whether you can verify the payment, satisfy the platform’s protection conditions, and protect your privacy.

Marketplace protection: what to check before accepting an offer
Seller protection is a contract with conditions, not a blanket guarantee. Before you accept, find the current seller-protection and payment-eligibility pages for the actual marketplace and review:
- which payment methods and categories qualify;
- whether local pickup, cash, or collection by a third party is excluded;
- which address must appear on the order;
- what tracking or delivery scan is required;
- deadlines for responding to disputes;
- how returns, “item not received,” and “not as described” claims are handled; and
- whether completing payment or communication elsewhere voids coverage.
Save a copy or screenshot of the applicable terms at the time of sale. Policies can change, and the rules that apply to one listing, country, category, or payment method may not apply to another.

- The buyer offers more than your listed price and asks you to forward the difference.
- The buyer says a payment is complete, but the transaction is missing from your official account.
- You receive a receipt image or email that you cannot verify by signing in independently.
- The buyer asks for a one-time code sent to your phone.
- The buyer insists on a different email address, phone number, payment service, or shipping address.
- The buyer asks you to refund an alleged duplicate payment before the original payment is settled.
- The buyer creates urgency, threatens negative feedback, or says a courier will collect the item immediately.
- The buyer’s story changes about who is paying, who is collecting, or where the item must be sent.
- The transaction requires you to buy gift cards, send cryptocurrency, pay a “release” fee, or transfer money to receive your payment.
One warning sign may be a misunderstanding; several together justify ending the sale. You do not owe a stranger an explanation beyond “I am not proceeding.”
What to do when a buyer looks suspicious
- Stop. Do not ship, meet, deposit a check, click a link, disclose a code, or send a refund.
- Preserve evidence. Save messages, usernames, phone numbers, email headers, payment notices, listing details, receipts, tracking information, and screenshots showing dates and amounts.
- Verify through official channels. Open the marketplace or payment provider directly and ask whether a transaction exists and whether it is settled, reversible, disputed, or eligible for protection.
- Report the account and listing. Use the marketplace’s in-app reporting or safety process. Do not use contact details supplied by the suspicious buyer.
- Report attempted fraud. The FTC directs people targeted by seller scams to ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
- Secure exposed accounts. Change passwords, revoke unknown sessions, remove unfamiliar recovery methods, and enable multifactor authentication if you clicked a phishing link or shared credentials or a code.
If you already sent the item or money
You shipped before confirming payment
Contact the carrier immediately and ask whether the package can be intercepted or returned. Notify the marketplace through its official seller-support path, provide tracking and the complete message history, and contact the payment provider even if the buyer claims payment is pending. Do not send additional money to “unlock” a refund or return.

You deposited a suspicious check
Stop spending the funds and do not refund the buyer. Call your bank’s fraud department using the number on your statement or bank card, explain that the check may be counterfeit, and follow its instructions. Keep the original check and envelope; do not destroy evidence.

You shared a verification code or account credentials
Change the password from a device you trust, sign out of other sessions, inspect account recovery settings, and contact the affected service. If your phone number or email account was altered, ask the provider to restore control and add additional security. Review other accounts that reused the same password.
You met the buyer and feel threatened
Leave the location and contact local emergency services if there is immediate danger. For nonurgent concerns, notify the marketplace and local law enforcement. Do not arrange a second meeting to recover an item or confront the buyer alone.
A reusable seller checklist
- Price and terms are written clearly in the listing.
- Communication stays on-platform when required.
- The buyer’s payment appears in the official account I opened myself.
- The amount and status match the order.
- No check exceeds the sale price.
- I will not refund a duplicate or excess payment based only on a message or screenshot.
- I will not share a one-time verification code.
- The shipping address, label, tracking, and handoff method meet the platform’s rules.
- For pickup, the meeting is public and the payment is verified before release.
- I have saved the listing, messages, receipts, and tracking information.
Why “available funds” can still be unsafe
Checks illustrate a broader rule: a balance can change before a transaction is final. Banks may provisionally credit a deposit and remove it later when the check is returned. Electronic payments can also be reversed, disputed, or held under a service’s rules. The relevant question is not “Do I see a number?” but “Has the provider confirmed this transaction is settled and eligible for this sale?”
Because settlement and protection rules differ, never infer safety from a buyer’s confidence, a branded notification, or a temporary account balance. Independent verification and refusal to move money are more reliable than appearance.
Source-specific guidance to keep in mind
The FTC’s July 2022 seller alert describes fake payment notifications, overpayment and refund schemes, fake-check overpayments, and verification-code requests. Its separate guidance on fake checks explains why funds can appear available before a check is identified as counterfeit. Meta’s May 2025 payment-scam guidance also describes overpayment and refund patterns; feature details on any platform can change, so use its current help pages for the service you are using.
eBay’s payment guidance is an example of a platform-specific rule: transactions begun there must be completed there for its protection programs to apply, and sellers are warned not to accept or repay overpayments. Treat that as eBay’s policy, not a universal rule for every marketplace.
