To avoid a ChatGPT Go charge, cancel the subscription on the platform that manages it at least 24 hours before the first paid renewal. Check the renewal date first, because canceling a free promotion too early may end your Go access immediately. Do not rely on uninstalling the app, removing a card or disabling UPI.
OpenAI’s India 12-month ChatGPT Go promotion ended for new redemptions on January 21, 2026. That does not necessarily mean every existing participant lost access on that date; your individual promotional end date and billing terms control. Check OpenAI’s release notes and your account details.

First, check whether your promotion is still active
OpenAI announced the India offer on November 3, 2025. It was available to eligible Indian users, including new users, Free-plan users and some existing ChatGPT Go subscribers, and required a payment method such as a card or UPI.

Sign in to the ChatGPT account that claimed the offer and look for its promotional end date, renewal date or billing status.

Promotional campaigns can have different renewal terms. OpenAI says some ChatGPT Go promotions automatically renew at the standard monthly rate, while others may not. Treat the subscription as capable of renewing until your account clearly shows that recurring billing has been canceled. Review OpenAI’s promotion guidance.
Choose the right cancellation time
- Find the first paid renewal date. This is usually shown in ChatGPT account settings or the relevant app-store subscription screen.
- Cancel at least 24 hours before that date. Canceling several days early provides a safer buffer. OpenAI recommends a minimum 24-hour buffer.
- Decide whether preserving free access matters. OpenAI warns that canceling a free promotion may end promotional access immediately.
- Save proof. Take a screenshot or retain the cancellation email, then recheck the subscription status.
If you want to use the remaining Go period, wait until shortly before the paid renewal—but not until the renewal day. If avoiding any possible charge is more important, cancel now and accept that your promotional access may end immediately.
Cancel ChatGPT Go on the website
- Sign in to ChatGPT at chatgpt.com.
- Select your profile icon.
- Open Settings.
- Open Billing, or Account if that is the label shown in your interface.
- Select Manage, Manage plan or Cancel plan.
- Complete the prompts and confirm the cancellation.
Labels can vary by account and interface version. The important result is that the plan-management screen shows the subscription as canceled or set not to renew. Clicking through the first cancellation screen is not enough unless the final status confirms it.

Cancel through Google Play on Android
If Google Play manages the subscription, cancel it there:
- Open the Google Play Store.
- Sign in to the Google account used for the ChatGPT subscription.
- Open your account menu and select Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions.
- Select ChatGPT.
- Choose Cancel subscription and complete the prompts.
Uninstalling the ChatGPT app does not cancel a Google Play subscription. Canceling on the ChatGPT website may also fail to stop billing if Google Play is the actual billing platform.
Cancel through Apple on iPhone or iPad
If Apple manages the subscription:
- Open Settings on the iPhone or iPad.
- Tap your name or Apple ID.
- Tap Subscriptions.
- Select ChatGPT.
- Tap Cancel Subscription and confirm.
An Apple-managed subscription must be canceled through Apple’s subscription settings. Deleting the app or canceling only on the web does not necessarily stop Apple billing.

How to identify the billing platform
Check all three locations if you are unsure:
- Apple: Settings → your name → Subscriptions → ChatGPT.
- Google Play: Play Store → account menu → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions → ChatGPT.
- Web: ChatGPT → profile icon → Settings → Billing or Account.
Apple, Google Play and chatgpt.com subscriptions are managed separately. Starting another subscription on a different platform before canceling the original can create duplicate charges. See OpenAI’s duplicate-billing guidance.

What not to rely on
- Removing a card: This is not a substitute for canceling the subscription.
- Disabling UPI: A failed payment does not necessarily mean the recurring subscription has been canceled.
- Uninstalling ChatGPT: App deletion does not cancel Apple or Google Play billing.
- Deleting your account: Account deletion cancels the subscription, but it is permanent and can remove your chats, settings and future access. Use normal subscription cancellation unless you genuinely want to delete the account.
What happens after cancellation?
For an ordinary paid subscription, cancellation generally takes effect after the current billing period, so access may continue until the next billing date. A free promotion is different: its terms may allow promotional access to end immediately when canceled.
When Go access ends, you can generally continue using the account on the Free plan. Expect lower limits and potentially fewer entitlements than Go. OpenAI describes Go as providing higher usage limits, more file uploads, expanded image generation, advanced data analysis and longer memory than Free; plan features and limits can change. Can you cancel and reactivate later?
You can generally resubscribe, but do not expect the promotion to return. OpenAI says the same promotional code cannot be reused, reactivation does not restore promotional pricing and the promotional duration must be used in consecutive months. Cancel early only if you accept losing the remaining promotional access.
If the Cancel button is missing
- Confirm that you are signed in to the account that claimed the offer.
- Check Apple Subscriptions.
- Check Google Play Subscriptions, including other Google accounts on the device.
- Check ChatGPT’s web Billing or Account settings.
- Look for a second ChatGPT account or a different email address.
- Check whether a partner, rather than OpenAI directly, manages the promotion.
- Contact OpenAI Support with your account email, screenshots, platform and billing details.
A missing control commonly indicates a wrong account, a platform mismatch or multiple subscriptions. Do not create a new subscription while investigating, because that can increase the risk of duplicate billing.

- Identify the processor from the receipt or bank statement: Apple, Google Play or chatgpt.com.
- For an Apple charge, use Apple’s refund process.
- For a Google Play charge, use Google Play’s refund process.
- For a chatgpt.com charge, contact OpenAI Support through the Help Center.
- Provide the account email, transaction date, amount, billing platform and screenshots of the promotion or cancellation status.
OpenAI says subscription fees are generally non-refundable, but it provides a refund-request process. Requesting a review does not guarantee that a refund will be approved.
Other billing points to know
ChatGPT Go is normally billed monthly; OpenAI says it does not currently offer annual billing or prepaid multi-month billing. Look for the first monthly renewal rather than expecting one annual charge. Pricing varies by country and may change, so verify the amount on your own account or the official pricing page rather than relying on an old article.
ChatGPT Go also does not include API usage. API charges are managed separately and are not canceled by ending ChatGPT Go.
