Under Synovus’s personal banking fee schedule effective January 2, 2026, Plus Checking can waive its $10 monthly service fee through eligible deposits, qualifying relationship balances, or military-community status; Student Checking can waive its $3 fee through My Synovus and eStatements enrollment; Inspire Checking requires much larger relationship balances; and Budget Checking has no waiver listed. Check your statement or My Synovus first, then use the route that matches your account and finances. Fees and terms can change, so verify the current schedule and your account agreement before relying on a waiver.

Identify the Synovus checking product before doing anything
Synovus does not use one universal fee-waiver rule for every checking account. The account name shown on your statement, account-opening documents, or My Synovus determines which conditions apply. A deposit that satisfies Plus Checking’s test does not automatically waive an Inspire, Student, or Budget fee.
- Sign in to My Synovus and open the checking account details, or read the account name on your monthly statement.
- Write down whether the account is Plus Checking, Inspire Checking, Student Checking, Budget Checking, or another product such as Private Wealth Checking.
- Compare that name with the current fee schedule. If your account is a legacy or otherwise unusual product, ask Synovus which current terms govern it rather than assuming that one of the rules below applies.
The schedule is dated January 2, 2026 and says that fees and terms are subject to change. It also warns that miscellaneous fees and additional account terms may apply. The monthly service fee is only one category of possible checking-account charge.

How to waive the Plus Checking fee
Plus Checking carries a $10 monthly service fee. Synovus says the fee is deducted at the end of the statement cycle. The account’s page lists a $100 minimum opening deposit, subject to approval, but that opening amount is not a monthly-fee waiver condition.
There are four published routes. You need to satisfy one route under the applicable definitions; you do not need to satisfy all four.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRoute 1: Qualify as a member of the military community
The fee schedule lists military-community membership as a way to have the Plus Checking monthly service fee waived. The schedule does not define every category of qualifying service or provide a self-certification process in the material cited here. If you believe you qualify, confirm your status and the documentation Synovus requires before expecting the fee to disappear.
Route 2: Maintain a $10,000 personal relationship balance
Synovus’s relationship-balance test combines eligible personal accounts. The cited disclosure describes eligible holdings as personal checking, savings, money market, IRA, CD, or investment accounts. The test is the minimum ending balance as of the last business day of the month, not an average daily balance.
Before transferring money, verify that each account is eligible and that ownership is counted the way Synovus requires. An investment or retirement balance may be included under the disclosure, but the exact account registration and relationship rules still matter. A temporary transfer late in the month can fail if the combined eligible balance is below $10,000 on the measurement date.
Route 3: Deposit at least $3,500 during the calendar month
The deposit route requires at least $3,500 in eligible deposits into personal checking during the calendar month through the last business day. It is broader than payroll direct deposit. Synovus’s personal-checking comparison disclosure states: “Direct deposit, cash or check deposit, ACH, and mobile deposits are all eligible transaction types.”
Rank #2
- Ideal for Gifting
- Ideal for a bookworm
- Compact for travelling
That means a person could reach the threshold with a combination of qualifying transactions rather than one employer payroll credit. Add the amounts of eligible deposits posted during the relevant calendar month and make sure the total reaches $3,500 by the last business day. Do not count a transfer merely because it was initiated; use the transaction posting and eligibility rules shown in your account disclosure.
Reversals are excluded. Synovus says: “Reversed deposits due to unavailable funds, cancellations, or stop payments do not count towards your Monthly Deposit.” If a deposited check is reversed, subtract it from your planning total rather than assuming the original credit remains eligible.
Route 4: Maintain a $500,000 business relationship balance
The Plus Checking schedule also lists a $500,000 minimum business relationship balance as a waiver route. This is a separate, much higher threshold from the $10,000 personal relationship test. Confirm which business accounts count and how the balance is measured before treating business funds as a qualifying relationship.
Choosing the practical Plus route
| Route | What you must maintain | When it may fit | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Military community | Qualifying status | You already meet Synovus’s military-community definition. | Eligibility evidence and enrollment or recognition steps. |
| Eligible deposits | $3,500 posted during each calendar month through the last business day. | Your normal cash flow reliably exceeds the threshold and balances fluctuate. | Which credits are eligible, posting dates, and any reversals. |
| Personal relationship balance | $10,000 minimum ending balance on the last business day across eligible personal accounts. | You already keep sufficient savings, investments, or deposits with Synovus. | Account eligibility, ownership, and the month-end measurement date. |
| Business relationship balance | $500,000 minimum business relationship balance. | Your business relationship already meets the published level. | Which business accounts and owners are included. |
This is a planning comparison, not a promise that one method is easier for every customer. Pick the route you can document consistently without creating overdraft risk, unnecessary transfers, or investment changes solely to avoid a $10 fee.
What counts as a Plus monthly deposit?
The schedule defines monthly deposits as the sum of eligible deposit transactions into personal checking during the calendar month, measured through the last business day. Synovus identifies four eligible transaction types in its comparison disclosure:
- Direct deposit
- Cash or check deposit
- ACH
- Mobile deposit
Do not treat the phrase “direct deposit” as a shortcut for the entire rule. A single payroll credit below $3,500 does not meet the published threshold unless other eligible deposits bring the calendar-month total to at least $3,500. Conversely, qualifying cash, check, ACH, and mobile deposits can contribute even when they are not payroll.
Keep a simple running total in the calendar month. Compare the amount posted, not merely the date you initiated the transaction, and leave time for a deposit to clear before the last business day. Exclude any amount later reversed because of unavailable funds, cancellation, or a stop payment.

How the Plus relationship-balance test works
The relationship route is based on a minimum ending balance as of the last business day of the month. Synovus describes the eligible personal relationship as a combination of checking, savings, money market, IRA, CD, and investment accounts. The threshold for Plus Checking is $10,000 in that personal relationship.
Because the test is a minimum at a specified month-end date, an account can qualify in one month and fail in another if the combined eligible balance dips below $10,000. Track withdrawals, automatic payments, maturities, and market-value changes that could affect the ending amount. Ask Synovus whether a particular investment or retirement account is included before counting it.
The $500,000 business relationship route has the same practical issue: the published number is a minimum business relationship balance, so confirm the included accounts and the measurement method rather than assuming every business product is aggregated.
Student Checking: enroll in both services and plan for the age conversion
Student Checking has a $3 monthly service fee. The current schedule says the fee can be waived by enrolling in My Synovus and eStatements. Both conditions matter; enrolling in only one does not match the published waiver language.
- Sign in to My Synovus and confirm that the Student Checking account is connected to your profile.
- Open the account’s statement-delivery settings and select eStatements, following the on-screen confirmation.
- Save the enrollment confirmation or verify the next statement that the account is set to electronic delivery.
- Check the fee schedule or contact Synovus if the $3 charge appears after both enrollments, especially if enrollment occurred partway through a statement cycle.
Student Checking is listed for students under age 26. Synovus says it converts to Plus Checking after the holder’s 26th birthday. That conversion changes the applicable fee and waiver rules: after conversion, the Plus routes described above—not the Student enrollment waiver—are the relevant conditions. Plan before the birthday by checking whether eligible deposits, a relationship balance, military-community status, or a qualifying business relationship will apply.

Inspire Checking: the balance thresholds are substantially higher
Inspire Checking has a $50 monthly service fee. The current schedule lists only two waiver routes: a $100,000 minimum personal relationship balance or a $1,000,000 minimum business relationship balance.
The personal relationship concept is distinct from a checking-account balance alone. Confirm the eligible account categories and month-end measurement with Synovus before counting savings, retirement, certificates of deposit, or investment assets. The published schedule does not list a monthly-deposit waiver for Inspire, so directing $3,500 of payroll or other deposits into the account is not a substitute for the stated balance threshold.
Rank #4
If you do not normally maintain either six-figure personal or seven-figure business relationship balances, compare the $50 monthly cost and the features you use with the eligibility requirements for another Synovus account. Do not move assets merely to avoid the fee without considering liquidity, taxes, investment objectives, and any other account charges.
Budget Checking: no waiver is listed
Budget Checking carries a $5 monthly service fee, and the current personal banking schedule lists no waiver option. There is therefore no published deposit, balance, enrollment, or military-community condition to follow for removing that fee.

If the $5 charge does not fit your budget, contact Synovus and ask which account options you are eligible to open. Request the complete fee schedule and account terms for any proposed replacement. A different account may have a higher fee, a balance requirement, a deposit requirement, or other charges; switching should be based on the total terms and the features you need, not on an assumption that every replacement is free.
Private Wealth Checking and other accounts
The fee schedule lists no monthly service fee for Private Wealth Checking. That does not establish that anyone can open it or that it is cost-free in every respect. Eligibility, minimum relationship requirements, service charges, and other terms are not supplied by the monthly-fee line alone.
For an account name not covered in the table, use the exact product disclosure and your account agreement. Do not apply Plus, Student, Inspire, or Budget rules to a different product unless Synovus confirms that the same waiver language governs it.

- Capture the account name. Read the statement or My Synovus account details and record the exact product.
- Find the applicable fee. Use the current fee schedule and distinguish the monthly service fee from overdraft, returned-item, wire, ATM, or other miscellaneous charges.
- Select one qualifying route. For Plus, choose military-community status, the $10,000 personal relationship balance, $3,500 in eligible monthly deposits, or the $500,000 business relationship balance. For Student, select both My Synovus and eStatements enrollment. For Inspire, compare the $100,000 personal and $1,000,000 business thresholds.
- Confirm definitions with Synovus. Ask which accounts count toward a relationship balance, whether a particular deposit will be eligible, and how a newly opened or converted account is treated.
- Complete the action early. Enroll in eStatements before the Student fee is assessed; arrange deposits with enough time to post; or position eligible balances before the last business day.
- Check the next statement. Verify that the monthly service fee was waived. If it was charged, compare the statement period with your enrollment date, posted deposits, reversals, and month-end balance.
- Escalate discrepancies promptly. Keep transaction confirmations and contact Synovus through an official channel listed with your account. Ask for the specific failed condition and the governing disclosure rather than requesting a generic refund.
Common reasons a waiver fails
Counting a noneligible or reversed deposit
A deposit can appear in the account and later be reversed. The Plus disclosure expressly excludes reversals caused by unavailable funds, cancellations, or stop payments. Recalculate the month’s eligible total after any reversal.

The Plus deposit test runs through the last business day of the calendar month, while the relationship test uses the minimum ending balance as of that day. A transaction initiated on the final day may post later, and a withdrawal before the measurement date can reduce the qualifying balance.

Assuming a direct deposit alone qualifies
The requirement is $3,500 in eligible monthly deposits, not simply the presence of a payroll code. Other eligible transaction types can contribute, but the total still has to reach the published amount.
Using the wrong account’s rule
Student’s electronic-statement waiver, Plus’s deposit and balance routes, Inspire’s high balance thresholds, and Budget’s lack of a listed waiver are not interchangeable. Recheck the product name after a conversion, especially when Student Checking changes to Plus Checking after age 26.
Confusing the monthly fee with another charge
The Plus fee is deducted at the end of the statement cycle, but Synovus also says other terms and miscellaneous fees may apply. A remaining charge may be unrelated to the monthly service fee and require a different resolution.

Set a monthly review date a few days before the last business day. For a deposit-based Plus waiver, total eligible posted deposits and check for reversals. For a relationship-based waiver, review the combined eligible ending balance and upcoming withdrawals. For Student Checking, confirm that both My Synovus and eStatements remain active until the age-based conversion.
Revisit the fee schedule whenever Synovus changes the account, when you receive a notice about terms, or before moving money between products. The schedule effective January 2, 2026 is not a permanent guarantee: Synovus states that information is subject to change. Keep the current disclosure and your individual agreement together so you can distinguish an updated monthly fee from a one-time or unrelated charge.
Which action is right for you?
For Plus Checking, use the route your finances already support: regular eligible deposits if your monthly cash flow reliably reaches $3,500, or a qualifying relationship balance if you already maintain at least $10,000 in eligible personal accounts. Military-community status and the $500,000 business relationship route are alternatives for customers who meet those specific conditions.
For Student Checking, complete both electronic enrollments and prepare for the automatic move to Plus Checking at age 26. For Inspire Checking, the waiver only makes sense when the required $100,000 personal or $1,000,000 business relationship balance is realistic. For Budget Checking, there is no listed waiver, so ask about eligible alternatives and compare all fees before switching.
