Credit card rewards can disappear for different reasons: an issuer may forfeit points after a card is closed, an airline or hotel program may impose an inactivity clock, an account may be delinquent, or a program may change what your balance buys. The safest approach is to identify the exact currency you hold, read its current terms, record the relevant deadline and qualifying activity, and check the consequences before you close a card or transfer points.
There is no universal “credit card points expire after” rule. Points held in an issuer’s rewards system follow the issuer’s agreement. Once transferred, they generally follow the airline or hotel program’s rules instead. Treat each balance as a separate account with its own clock, restrictions and redemption value.

First, identify what kind of rewards you have
Start by listing every balance separately. “Travel points” on a card statement may still be issuer currency, while miles displayed in an airline account are partner currency. The distinction determines which terms control the deadline and whether a card closure affects the balance.
Issuer-held points
Issuer-held rewards remain in the card company’s program until you redeem them or transfer them. The card agreement and rewards terms can address inactivity, delinquency, closure of the last eligible card, and forfeiture notices. A claim that points “never expire” usually means there is no ordinary calendar expiration date; it does not necessarily protect the balance from those other events.

Transferred airline or hotel miles
A completed transfer normally converts the balance into the partner’s currency. The destination program’s terms then control expiration, activity, account closure and award availability. A transfer is not automatically a way to stop a deadline, preserve value or create a reversible balance. Check that the partner accepts the transfer, whether transfers can be reversed, and whether you have a realistic redemption before moving points.
Pending transfers and mixed balances
Keep a record of the transfer date, amount and confirmation number. During processing, the points may be unavailable in both accounts, and the destination clock may not begin when you expect. Do not assume a pending transfer counts as qualifying activity. Verify the posting in the destination account and inspect both statements afterward.
How expiration and forfeiture rules differ
The following examples illustrate the different ways programs measure risk. They are not a complete list of issuers or loyalty programs. Terms and individual account status can change, so open the current agreement for your card and the current terms for the partner account before acting.

| American Express Membership Rewards (U.S.) | Points have no expiration dates, but the program lists circumstances in which they can be forfeited. | Some linked-card accounts must be paid by the due date to avoid forfeiting points earned during that billing period. | If American Express closes the last remaining eligible card for inactivity, the FAQ says you have 90 days to use the points and must call; stated options include gift cards and a transfer to an already linked partner loyalty program. |
| American Airlines AAdvantage | Terms updated January 13, 2026, and effective March 1, 2026, describe a 24-month qualifying-activity requirement that extends unexpired miles by 24 months from the qualifying activity in applicable cases. | Only activity that meets the AAdvantage definition qualifies. The terms do not make every purchase or transfer a universal reset. | The terms also describe possible account termination after at least 36 months with no earning or redeeming activity, a zero balance, no qualifying co-branded card and no specified status or lifetime benefits. The 24-month activity requirement does not apply to members under 21; a separate requirement applies after turning 21. |
| Marriott Bonvoy | Official support information dated April 13, 2026 says 24 consecutive months of inactivity forfeits accumulated points. | Earning points or miles, redeeming points, or purchasing points at least once during the 24-month period is listed as activity. | The rule concerns the member account; do not infer that holding a separate credit card alone resets the clock unless the current terms say so. |
| Allegiant Allways Rewards | Terms effective September 4, 2025 state that points expire after 24 months of inactivity. | Completing travel through Allegiant while logged in or holding an open Allegiant credit card is listed as activity. | If the card closes, points expire 24 months after the close date unless qualifying travel is completed during that period. Closing the Allways account forfeits the points. |
| Wyndham Rewards | Terms effective May 2024 state that points expire four years after checkout for the stay that earned them. | The terms allow earlier forfeiture or cancellation, including for inactivity, but the supplied rule does not specify a universal reset period. | Use the actual posting and checkout information in your account rather than assuming a card purchase extends the four-year date. |
“No expiration” still allows other ways to lose points
American Express illustrates why the wording matters. Its Membership Rewards FAQ says, “Membership Rewards points do not have expiration dates.” A separate inactivity FAQ says, “If we close your last remaining Membership Rewards eligible Card product, you will have 90 days to use points before losing them.” Those statements address different situations. The 90-day period is not a blanket expiration rule for every Membership Rewards balance.
The same program also warns that points associated with certain linked cards can be forfeited when the account is not paid by the due date. Before relying on a no-expiration statement, read the sections covering delinquency, returned payments, closure, fraud, and eligibility. Save a copy of the terms and any account notice showing the applicable condition.

What counts as qualifying activity?
Never assume that any small transaction, transfer or redemption resets every program’s clock. Programs define activity differently, and some actions may post after the deadline.
Check the exact action
- Marriott’s listed activity includes earning points or miles, redeeming points, or purchasing points at least once in 24 months.
- Allegiant’s stated activity includes completing travel through its logged-in channels or holding an open co-branded card.
- AAdvantage requires qualifying activity under its terms to extend unexpired miles for another 24 months in applicable cases.
- Wyndham states a fixed four-year measure from the qualifying stay’s checkout date, with possible earlier forfeiture; do not invent a reset interval.
Check when the action posts
A purchase made near a deadline may not count until the statement closes or the points post. A hotel stay, flight, refund, transfer or purchase of points can also be reversed or delayed. Leave enough time for posting, then confirm the activity appears in the loyalty account. Keep the receipt, confirmation and posting date.
Check age and status exceptions
AAdvantage’s current terms exclude members under 21 from the stated 24-month activity requirement and describe a separate requirement after the member turns 21. Other programs may have status, military, disability, bankruptcy or account-type exceptions. Read the exception section instead of applying a general internet rule to your account.
What happens when you close the credit card?
Card closure is a decision point, not an administrative detail. Before requesting closure, answer three questions in writing:
- Is the balance still in the issuer’s rewards system, or has it already moved to a partner program?
- Will another eligible card remain open and preserve access to the issuer currency?
- What exact deadline, redemption method and phone procedure apply after closure?
Issuer-held balances
American Express’s inactivity FAQ provides a specific example: when it closes the last remaining eligible Membership Rewards card, the member has 90 days to use the points and must call. The stated options include gift cards and transferring to an already linked partner loyalty program. This is different from voluntarily closing a card, closing an account for nonpayment, or closing a rewards account, so ask the issuer which clause applies to your situation.

Partner balances
Once points are in an airline or hotel account, closing the original card may not remove them immediately, but the partner’s inactivity or fixed-expiration rule still applies. Allegiant’s terms state that after the card closes, points expire 24 months after the close date unless qualifying travel is completed during that period. Closing the Allways account forfeits the points. Other programs can use different triggers.

Download the latest statement, rewards ledger and terms before closure. Ask customer service to state the post-closure deadline, eligible redemption methods and whether a remaining card preserves the balance. Record the date, representative’s answer and confirmation number. After closure, sign in again and verify that the balance and deadline match what you were told.
Transfers can change both the clock and the value
A transfer can solve a near-term redemption problem, but it can also move you into stricter rules. Compare the destination program’s expiration policy, award inventory, fees, blackout or capacity restrictions, name-matching requirements and transfer timing before submitting it.
Confirm a specific use
Search the intended flight or hotel stay first, using the same dates, travelers and cabin or room type. Record the award price, taxes, change rules and cancellation terms. Availability can disappear while a transfer is processing, and many transfers cannot be reversed. Do not transfer merely because a destination account is available.
Recheck value at the moment of redemption
A 2024 Consumer Financial Protection Bureau Federal Register document notes that issuers and loyalty programs generally reserve the right to change reward value, including at redemption. An old cents-per-point estimate is not a guarantee. Check today’s award price and the program’s current terms immediately before transferring or redeeming.

Keep issuer and partner records separate
Maintain a simple ledger with the issuer currency, destination currency, transfer date, amount, confirmation number and intended redemption. A partner account may show a different expiration date or no visible date at all. The absence of a displayed date does not prove that the miles cannot expire.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical system for preventing loss
Use this six-step routine whenever you open a card, receive a warning, approach a deadline or consider a transfer.
- Name each currency. Write the issuer program and every airline or hotel program separately. Include account numbers or the last four digits only in your private records.
- Open the current terms. Locate the clauses titled expiration, inactivity, forfeiture, card closure, rewards-account closure, delinquency, qualifying activity and redemption restrictions. Save the dated document or print to PDF.
- Inspect your account. Check the current balance, last qualifying activity, posted expiration date, forfeiture notice, pending transactions and transfers in progress. Compare the ledger with the monthly statement.
- Identify a qualifying action. Choose an action the program explicitly recognizes, and complete it early enough for posting. A tiny redemption or purchase is not useful if that program does not count it.
- Plan card changes. Before closing, confirm whether another eligible card remains, what happens to the balance, and the final date and method for using it. If the account is delinquent, resolve the payment issue before relying on points.
- Verify afterward. Recheck both accounts after a redemption, transfer, payment, card closure or qualifying activity. Save the confirmation and set a reminder before the next deadline.
Set reminders that match the actual rule
A calendar reminder should identify the program, the required action and the posting buffer. For a 24-month inactivity rule, set reminders at 18 and 21 months, then verify activity has posted. For a fixed date such as Wyndham’s four years from checkout, record each stay’s checkout date separately; one new stay does not necessarily reset older points. For American Express’s 90-day post-closure period, set a reminder immediately when the issuer closes the last eligible card and call if the FAQ requires a phone redemption.
Review statements monthly for balance changes, program news and forfeiture notices. American Express says its monthly statement can show balances, recent charges, program news and notices about forfeiture. Other issuers may place alerts in a web inbox or loyalty-account message center, so check those locations as well.

Assuming all card points expire on the same schedule
Why it fails: Issuer currencies, airline miles and hotel points can use different clocks. Safer approach: maintain a separate deadline for each program and read its own terms.

Making an arbitrary small purchase
Why it fails: The program may not count card spending, the purchase may post late, or the account may be ineligible. Safer approach: use an action expressly listed as qualifying activity and confirm posting.
Transferring to “protect” points
Why it fails: The partner may have a shorter inactivity period, limited award space or a changed redemption value. Safer approach: locate a concrete redemption, compare current prices and transfer only the amount needed when the transfer is not reversible.
Closing the card before checking eligibility
Why it fails: The last eligible card may trigger a short use period, or the rewards account itself may be closed. Safer approach: obtain the post-closure rule in writing and preserve a remaining eligible card when appropriate.
Ignoring payment status
Why it fails: Some terms allow forfeiture of points earned in a billing period when the linked account is not paid by its due date. Safer approach: bring the account current and read the delinquency clause before redeeming or transferring.
Using an old valuation
Why it fails: Programs can alter award prices or other redemption terms. Safer approach: price the redemption under today’s rules and save the confirmation.
When a deadline is close or points have vanished
Before the deadline
- Take a qualifying action that the program explicitly recognizes, allowing time for it to post.
- Call the issuer or loyalty program if the terms require a phone redemption or if the account shows an unexplained warning.
- Choose a usable redemption rather than transferring speculatively.
After a forfeiture notice
Capture screenshots and download statements showing the balance, activity and notice. Ask customer service which clause was applied, the effective date, and whether reinstatement or a final redemption window exists. Do not assume a later purchase restores forfeited points; obtain the program’s answer and confirmation number.
After an unexpected transfer or closure
Check the source and destination accounts, transfer history, card status and rewards-account status. Contact the party that initiated the action promptly, especially when the terms require a call within a stated period. Keep all case numbers and written responses.
Questions to answer before you act
- What is the exact name of the currency, and where is it held today?
- Is the deadline based on inactivity, a fixed earning or checkout date, or a card or account event?
- Which specific actions qualify, and when must they post?
- Will closing this card leave another eligible card open?
- Is the destination transfer reversible, and is there confirmed award availability?
- Could the program change the redemption value before you use the balance?
Answering those questions and checking the account after every material change prevents most avoidable losses. The terms that govern your exact card and rewards account, not a generic expiration rule, determine what you can safely do.
