Binance can liquidate a futures position when its Mark Price reaches the liquidation threshold even if the last-traded candle never touched that level. Mark Price is the risk-control price Binance uses for unrealized PnL and liquidation calculations. To reduce the danger, use less leverage, keep notional exposure below the level that moves you into a higher maintenance-margin tier, choose isolated margin when you need a position-level loss boundary, leave a substantial buffer below the displayed liquidation price, monitor funding and margin ratio, and act before the trigger. Binance’s 2026 guidance says to keep margin ratio below 80%; 100% is the liquidation point.
Mark Price and Last Price are different measurements
Last Price is the latest price at which a trade occurred on Binance. It is the price shown by the most recent transaction and the basis of the familiar candlestick chart. Mark Price is a separate reference value. Binance calculates it using funding data and a basket of prices from spot exchanges. The two can diverge for seconds or longer, particularly when futures liquidity is thin, a large order moves the book, or spot markets and the futures contract react at different speeds.

| Price | What it represents | How it affects a leveraged position |
|---|---|---|
| Last Price | The latest transaction price on Binance’s contract | Useful for charting and order execution, but not the primary liquidation reference |
| Mark Price | A calculated fair-value reference using funding information and a basket of spot-exchange prices | Used to calculate unrealized PnL and liquidation prices |
Because liquidation follows Mark Price, a fast move in that reference can make a position liquidation-eligible while the visible last-price candle appears not to have reached the displayed liquidation price. Looking only at the candle therefore gives an incomplete risk picture. The mark-price line, margin ratio and liquidation estimate in the Binance futures interface are the relevant controls.
Why a wick may be absent from the chart
Suppose the last traded price remains above a long position’s liquidation level while spot prices in the mark basket move sharply lower. Mark Price can adjust toward that lower fair value even without a matching Binance trade at the same level. If the resulting unrealized loss leaves insufficient collateral, the liquidation engine can begin closing the position. The reverse applies to a short position when Mark Price rises quickly.

What actually triggers liquidation
Binance describes a position as liquidation-eligible when its collateral—initial collateral plus realized and unrealized PnL—falls below the required maintenance margin. Binance expresses the account condition as a margin ratio reaching 100%. Maintenance margin is the minimum equity required to keep the position open; it is not the same as the initial margin you posted.
In practical terms, a position can move from apparently safe to eligible when three things happen together:
- Mark Price moves against the position and increases unrealized loss.
- Funding, trading costs or realized losses reduce available collateral.
- The position’s maintenance-margin requirement rises relative to its remaining equity, often because its notional exposure sits in a higher risk tier.
Binance advises adding margin or reducing positions before the ratio reaches 100% and recommends keeping margin ratio below 80%. The 80% figure is a risk-management guideline published by Binance in its 2026 update, not a promise that liquidation cannot occur below that level. Volatility, fees and rapid price changes can consume the remaining buffer quickly.

The liquidation price shown in the interface is an estimate based on current position size, margin, maintenance requirements and other account inputs. It is not a guaranteed execution price during a jump. Binance illustrates the problem with a Mark Price move from 17,000 to 17,100 USDT in one second: a position can be liquidated at the higher Mark Price after the reference value jumps, even though the trader saw a lower liquidation estimate immediately beforehand.
During liquidation, the engine must act on the live risk state. If Mark Price gaps across the threshold between updates, there may be no orderly sequence of trades at the displayed level. Bankruptcy-price execution can also be less favorable than the displayed liquidation price. This is why a few ticks of apparent distance—or a stop order placed exactly at the liquidation estimate—should not be treated as protection against a gap.

Reduce risk before opening the position
Use lower leverage and smaller notional exposure
Leverage changes how much exposure is controlled by each unit of collateral, but the underlying danger is the position’s notional size relative to equity. Binance adjusts maximum leverage and risk limits according to absolute exposure. Larger positions generally require more margin and have lower available leverage. Entering a smaller position or adding collateral before the trade gives Mark Price more room to move without exhausting maintenance equity.
- Decide the maximum amount of account equity you are willing to place at risk.
- Choose the position notional and leverage together; do not select maximum leverage first and size the position afterward.
- Check the resulting liquidation estimate and margin ratio in the order panel.
- Reduce notional or add margin if the ratio is already close to Binance’s 80% caution level under a modest adverse move.
High leverage does not make the liquidation engine move more slowly. It simply leaves less adverse price movement between the entry price and the point at which maintenance margin is breached.
Choose isolated margin for a hard position-level boundary
Isolated margin assigns a specified amount of collateral to one position. A loss in that position is generally contained to the margin allocated there, subject to liquidation mechanics, funding and fees. Cross margin instead makes the wallet’s eligible collateral available across positions. Cross can delay liquidation of one trade when spare equity is available elsewhere, but a correlated move can consume that shared equity rapidly and put several positions at risk at once.
Use isolated mode when you want a clearly limited allocation for a single trade and can accept liquidation of that position once its allocated margin is exhausted. Use cross only when you understand that other positions, wallet balances and unrealized PnL can change the amount available to support the trade. Recalculate the displayed liquidation price after changing margin mode, adding or removing margin, or changing size; the estimate is not portable between modes.
Check maintenance-margin tiers before adding size
For USDⓈ-M futures, maintenance margin depends on position notional, a maintenance-margin rate and a tier-specific maintenance amount. Increasing size can push a position into a higher tier. At that point, the maintenance requirement and liquidation estimate can change even if Mark Price barely moves. The tier schedule therefore matters before opening, scaling in or transferring collateral away from a position.

- Open the contract’s current risk-limit or maintenance-margin information in Binance.
- Identify the tier containing your planned notional, including existing exposure on the same contract where applicable.
- Recheck the tier after every scale-in, because the additional quantity can move the whole position into a different bracket.
- Leave room below the next tier rather than sizing right at its boundary.
Tier parameters are account- and contract-specific and can change. Use the values displayed for the contract and account at the time of the trade rather than relying on an old screenshot or a generic calculator.
Cross margin versus isolated margin
| Decision point | Isolated margin | Cross margin |
|---|---|---|
| Collateral scope | Margin allocated to the individual position | Eligible wallet collateral is shared across positions |
| Liquidation containment | Loss is confined to the position allocation until that allocation is exhausted | One position can draw on equity elsewhere, but a broad loss can threaten multiple positions |
| Effect of other positions’ PnL | Other positions normally do not provide the same shared support | Unrealized and realized PnL elsewhere can change available equity and the liquidation estimate |
| Correlated-move risk | Usually limited to the isolated allocation for that position | A correlated move can consume shared margin quickly across the account |
| Best fit | A trade with a defined maximum collateral allocation | A deliberately managed portfolio where shared collateral and correlation are understood |
Neither mode prevents a Mark Price jump. The choice determines which collateral is exposed when the jump occurs.
Keep a real buffer below the displayed liquidation price
The liquidation estimate should be treated as an emergency boundary, not an entry target. A buffer means keeping the position far enough away that an unusually fast Mark Price move, a funding deduction and a maintenance-tier change do not consume the remaining equity at once. There is no universal percentage buffer that Binance guarantees; the appropriate distance depends on the contract’s volatility, your size, margin mode and available collateral.
Recalculate after every material account change
Recheck the displayed liquidation price and margin ratio whenever you:
- Increase or decrease position size.
- Add, remove or transfer margin.
- Switch between isolated and cross margin.
- Open another position in cross margin.
- Realize a loss or gain that changes wallet equity.
- Move into a different maintenance-margin tier.
A number copied from the order preview can become stale as soon as one of these inputs changes. In cross margin, a second position can alter the estimate even when the first position itself is untouched.

Account for funding deductions
Funding payments reduce the margin supporting a position when they are charged. Binance states that if the available balance is insufficient, a funding fee can be deducted from position margin and affect the liquidation price. A position that was safely buffered at entry can therefore move closer to liquidation without a large candle. Check the funding rate, payment schedule and post-payment margin ratio, especially when holding through several funding intervals.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Act before the ratio reaches the trigger
Do not wait for a liquidation notification. Binance says notification delivery is not guaranteed to arrive before liquidation, particularly during a rapid move. If the margin ratio is climbing, take one or more of these actions while orders can still be placed:
- Add margin. Transfer eligible collateral or increase isolated margin if the interface permits it. Confirm that the new liquidation estimate and margin ratio update.
- Reduce position size. Close part of the position with a marketable order or another order type you understand. Reducing notional lowers both directional exposure and, potentially, the maintenance tier.
- Close the position. If the remaining buffer is too small or Mark Price is moving rapidly, exiting can be safer than trying to rescue the trade with a small deposit.
- Cancel nonessential orders. Orders that can increase exposure or reserve collateral may complicate the account’s available margin during a fast market.
- Recheck the account after execution. Verify filled quantity, remaining notional, funding deductions and margin ratio rather than assuming the intended amount was executed.
Adding margin does not make a losing trade sound; it only increases the collateral available to absorb further loss. Reduce or close exposure when the underlying risk is no longer acceptable.
Portfolio Margin uses a different account-level test
Portfolio Margin does not evaluate each position solely through the ordinary single-position maintenance-margin view. Binance defines unified maintenance margin (uniMMR) as unified adjusted equity divided by unified maintenance margin. Correlations and the combined risk of positions can therefore affect the account-level result.

Understand what happens after liquidation begins
Liquidation is an engine process, not a guaranteed fill at the number printed beside your position. If closing the position creates a bankrupt position, Binance may transfer it to the Insurance Fund. When losses exceed that fund’s capacity, Auto-Deleveraging can affect traders on the opposite side of the market. Bankruptcy-price execution can be less favorable than the displayed liquidation price, leaving less equity than a trader expected.
These mechanisms are tail-risk controls. They do not provide a strategy for surviving a large Mark Price jump. The practical response remains reducing leverage and size, keeping collateral available and acting before the maintenance threshold is reached.
A monitoring routine for fast markets
Before placing the order
- Confirm whether the contract is USDⓈ-M or another futures product and read its current maintenance tiers.
- Choose cross or isolated margin deliberately.
- Set notional size and leverage so the initial margin ratio is comfortably below 80% under a stress scenario you can tolerate.
- Record the current Mark Price, Last Price, liquidation estimate and allocated margin.
While the position is open
- Watch Mark Price as well as the last-traded chart.
- Check margin ratio after every fill, transfer, realized PnL change and funding payment.
- In cross margin, include the PnL and collateral effect of every other open position.
- Review the next maintenance tier before scaling in.
When volatility accelerates
- Stop adding exposure until the mark-price move and margin ratio stabilize.
- Use the live liquidation estimate only as a moving reference; do not assume it is a guaranteed execution level.
- Add margin, reduce size or close before the ratio approaches 100%.
- Do not depend on an alert arriving before the engine acts.
Common mistakes that lead to surprise liquidation
Watching only the candlestick
The candle reflects Last Price trades. It can omit a Mark Price move sourced from spot markets and funding calculations. Add the Mark Price and margin-ratio indicators to the monitoring layout.
Recommended Free Tools
Assuming the liquidation price is fixed
Margin mode, size, funding, maintenance tiers and other positions can all change the estimate. Recalculate after each material change.
Using the full leverage limit
The maximum shown by the exchange is a risk limit, not a recommended operating level. Larger exposure can reduce available leverage and increase maintenance requirements.
Removing spare collateral from cross margin
Cross margin can appear safe while unused equity supports the position. Transferring that equity away, or opening a correlated trade, can move the account much closer to liquidation.
Relying on alerts or a stop order alone
Binance does not guarantee that notifications arrive before liquidation, and a fast Mark Price jump can cross a trigger before an order executes. Risk must be reduced through size and collateral, not outsourced to an alert.

What the evidence does—and does not—show
Binance’s published material explains the Mark Price mechanism, maintenance-margin conditions, margin-ratio guidance and rapid-move example. It does not provide an independent probability estimate for being liquidated during a fast Mark Price move. No alert system can be represented as a guaranteed safeguard. Treat every displayed threshold as dynamic and manage exposure so a brief, adverse jump does not consume the account’s available margin.
