To avoid purchase interest, pay the entire statement balance by its due date when the card offers a purchase grace period and your account meets its conditions. To avoid a late fee, pay at least the minimum payment shown on the statement by the due date, allowing enough time for the issuer to receive and credit it.
The bonus requirement and your payment obligation are separate. Eligible spending, returns, posting delays, payment cutoffs, grace-period rules and reward timing are controlled by the current offer terms, statement and cardholder agreement. The guidance below is for U.S. consumer credit cards; your issuer’s documents control if they differ.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
The bonus and your bill are separate obligations
A minimum-spend requirement is an eligibility test for a promotional reward. It does not change the APR, due date or minimum payment on your account. The statement governs what you owe and when it must be paid, even if you have already reached the advertised spending amount.
| Goal | What must happen | What does not accomplish it | If you miss it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Qualify for the offer | Reach the required amount of eligible net purchases within the offer’s stated period and satisfy all other terms. | Assuming every transaction counts, or relying on a displayed threshold without checking exclusions and reversals. | The reward may not be awarded, or it may later be withheld or revoked under the offer terms. |
| Avoid purchase interest | Pay the full statement balance by the due date while a purchase grace period applies and its conditions are met. | Paying only the minimum, or paying the current balance without understanding which charges are on the statement. | Any unpaid purchase balance can accrue interest under the card’s APR and calculation method. |
| Avoid a late payment or late fee | Ensure at least the statement’s minimum payment is received by the issuer by the due date and before any stated cutoff. | Mailing a payment on the due date, or scheduling an online payment after the issuer’s cutoff. | The account can be treated as late and may incur a fee or other consequences under the agreement. |
Paying the full statement balance normally satisfies the minimum-payment requirement as well. The reverse is not true: a minimum payment can keep the account current while leaving most of the balance subject to interest.

Read the offer before making the spending
Confirm the deadline and how transactions are counted
Find the exact start and end dates, the required dollar amount, and any language about when a purchase must post. A transaction that is pending near the deadline may not count if the issuer measures eligibility by posted purchases. Do not rely on a merchant receipt alone; use the issuer’s account activity and the offer’s definition of the qualifying period.
Separate eligible purchases from excluded transactions
Offer terms can exclude cash equivalents, fees and other transaction types. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s 2024 rewards issue spotlight says issuers typically do not count cash equivalents such as gift cards, but that is a general description rather than a universal definition. Treat a transaction as qualifying only when the current terms say it is eligible. Interest, fees and other excluded categories should not be counted merely because they increase the account balance.
Understand net spending and post-award conditions
A refund, statement credit or dispute can reduce the net amount credited toward a promotion. The CFPB-hosted Union Bank card agreement illustrates an issuer-specific approach: net purchases exclude transactions later subject to a refund or credit, and points can be deducted after a later refund, credit or dispute. That agreement is an example, not a rule for every card.
The CFPB’s 2024 rewards circular also discusses problems that arise when rewards are withheld or revoked under conditions consumers did not notice. Reaching a displayed spending threshold is therefore not an unconditional guarantee. Read the full disclosure for account-standing requirements, reward timing and any language allowing adjustment after the reward posts.
Keep the spending affordable and measurable
Reserve the money before you charge
Set aside enough cash to pay the purchases when the statement arrives. A bonus is not a saving if interest, a late fee or debt remains after the promotional period. Do not increase spending solely to reach a target; use the card for purchases you already planned and can fund.
Track posted eligible net purchases
Maintain a simple running record rather than relying on the card’s headline progress meter. Record the transaction date, merchant, amount, posting date, whether the terms identify it as eligible, and any later return, credit or dispute. Subtract reversals from your running total. Keep screenshots or downloaded statements showing the activity in case the progress display changes.

Allow for posting delays and adjustments
Pending charges, merchant corrections and credits can change the qualifying total. Check the account regularly during the offer period and again after it ends. A purchase that appears to have taken you over the threshold can fall below it after a return or dispute, and CFPB’s 2024 rewards materials provide no universal percentage or timing for such reversals.

Statement balance
The statement balance is the amount billed for that completed cycle. If your objective is to avoid purchase interest and the grace period applies, this is generally the amount to pay in full by the due date. New charges made after the closing date usually belong to the next cycle, even if the online account shows them in a current balance.
Minimum payment
The minimum payment is the smallest amount the statement requires by the due date to keep the payment from being late. It is a timing safeguard, not an interest-avoidance target. Paying it alone can leave a substantial balance accruing interest.
Due date and payment instructions
Use the due date and payment channel printed on the statement, not an estimate based on the day you normally pay. CFPB consumer guidance reviewed September 23, 2024, says card companies must establish procedures to deliver bills at least 21 days before the payment due date. The statement should also identify the applicable time zone, cutoff information and accepted payment methods.
Choose the payment path that matches your objective
| Payment path | Interest result | Late-payment result | When it may be necessary |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pay the full statement balance by the due date | Usually avoids purchase interest when the card provides a grace period and the account qualifies for it. | Meets the minimum payment, provided the issuer receives and credits it on time. | Best path when you want the reward without financing the purchases. |
| Pay only the minimum by the due date | Leaves the remaining purchase balance to accrue interest, subject to the card’s APR and method. | Generally prevents the payment from being late if received on time. | Emergency cash-flow situation when paying in full is not affordable. |
| Pay less than the minimum or pay after the cutoff | Does not protect against interest and can trigger other account consequences. | Can be treated as late, with a possible fee under the agreement. | Only an error to correct immediately by contacting the issuer. |
If the full statement balance is unaffordable, pay at least the minimum before the deadline, then send as much additional money as possible as soon as you can. Interest may accrue while a balance remains; paying the minimum does not stop it.

A grace period is not automatic
A grace period is the interval between the end of a billing cycle and the payment due date. Issuers are not required to provide one, although most cards provide a purchase grace period. The CFPB states: “Credit card companies are not required to give a grace period.” When a card offers one, you generally must pay the statement balance in full and satisfy the agreement’s conditions to avoid purchase interest.

Carrying a balance can remove the benefit
If you carried a purchase balance from a prior cycle, the issuer may suspend the grace period. Interest can then apply to the unpaid balance and to new purchases, depending on the agreement. The number of full, on-time billing cycles needed to restore the grace period is issuer-specific, so read the cardholder agreement rather than assuming one payment will restore it.
Different transaction types can behave differently
Grace periods generally concern purchases. Cash advances typically begin accruing interest on the transaction date, and balance transfers can have their own APR and terms. Your statement must show balances by APR category so you can see which amounts are subject to which rate.
Interest may be calculated daily
Many issuers use an average-daily-balance method. The balance for each day is accumulated, an average is calculated, and the applicable periodic rate is applied. A payment can reduce future daily balances without erasing interest that accrued before the payment posted. Payments above the minimum are generally applied first to the balance with the highest APR; issuer rules govern how the minimum portion is allocated.
Residual interest is possible
Once a card company starts charging interest, CFPB guidance says it generally continues until the company receives payment, subject to the card’s rules. If you previously carried a balance, inspect the next statement for interest calculated through the payment date. Paying the amount shown on one statement does not guarantee that a later residual-interest line will be zero.
Schedule the payment so it is received on time
- Open the statement. Confirm the statement balance, minimum payment, due date, time zone and any payment-channel instructions.
- Select a method with a reliable receipt time. An issuer’s online bill-pay system, bank bill pay, phone payment or mailed check may have different processing and cutoff rules. Use the method described by your issuer.
- Send it early. CFPB guidance reviewed December 9, 2024, says a payment generally must be received by the due date; mailing it on that date is not enough. The same guidance says a payment generally cannot be treated as late if received by 5 p.m. on the due date in the time zone stated on the statement, subject to the next-business-day rule for certain Sundays and holidays and to reasonable online-payment cutoffs.
- Verify receipt and crediting. Check the account after the expected processing time and retain the confirmation number, timestamp or bank record. If the payment does not appear, contact the issuer promptly with that evidence.
Do not assume that a payment submitted before midnight is timely. The issuer’s stated cutoff, channel and receipt rules control.
If you cannot pay the statement balance
Protect the due date first: submit at least the required minimum early enough to be received. Then pay additional amounts as soon as your cash flow allows. The unpaid portion can accrue interest, often using a daily method, and a higher payment later does not retroactively remove interest already incurred.

Stop adding discretionary charges while you are carrying the balance. Keep records of each payment and monitor whether the minimum changes on the next statement. If the account had previously enjoyed a grace period, ask the issuer how many complete billing cycles of full, on-time payments are required to regain it.

Returns, credits and disputes can change bonus eligibility
Recalculate the net qualifying amount
When merchandise is returned or a merchant issues a credit, subtract that amount from the qualifying total unless the offer expressly says otherwise. A dispute can have the same effect under some agreements. The CFPB’s rewards materials describe these as common sources of consumer confusion but do not set a universal reversal formula.
Watch the reward after it posts
A reward can be adjusted after a later refund, credit or dispute if the agreement permits it. Keep the original offer, transaction history and credit documentation until the reward is fully settled. If the reward disappears, compare the issuer’s explanation with the disclosed terms and ask for the specific transaction and clause involved.
Do not confuse a refund with a payment
A merchant refund reduces the card balance; it does not replace the card payment required by the statement. Until the refund posts, make the scheduled payment based on the statement. After it posts, check whether it creates a credit balance or changes the amount you still need to pay.
Check the next statement for interest and posting errors
- Confirm that the payment amount and date are shown as received, not merely scheduled.
- Look for purchase interest, cash-advance interest, transfer interest or a residual-interest line.
- Compare the new minimum payment with the balance and any returned or disputed transaction.
- Review the reward status and the qualifying-spend calculation after credits or returns.
- Save the statement and payment confirmation with the offer terms.
If interest appears after you believed you paid in full, ask the issuer whether the account had lost its grace period, whether a cash advance or transfer was involved, the dates used in the daily calculation, and whether interest continued until payment receipt. If a late fee appears, provide the payment confirmation and ask how the issuer applied its cutoff and receipt rules. Do not assume an adjustment is required; the agreement and transaction record determine the outcome.
Common situations and the correct response
You spent more than the target
Suppose an offer requires $3,000 and your statement closes with $4,000 in eligible purchases. The reward requirement and payment obligation remain separate. To avoid purchase interest, pay the $4,000 statement balance by the due date if the grace period applies. Paying only the minimum may keep the account current but leaves the remainder subject to interest.

A return lowers you below the target
If a $500 return reduces net eligible spending below the required amount, the issuer may deny the reward or reverse it later under the offer terms. Keep the return record, recalculate the total and do not count the refunded amount simply because the original purchase once appeared in the progress meter.
You paid on the due date but after the cutoff
A submission after the stated online cutoff, or receipt after the applicable deadline, can be treated as late even if the calendar date has not changed. Contact the issuer with the confirmation immediately and review the statement’s time zone and cutoff language.
You paid the statement balance and still see interest
Possible explanations include a previously carried balance that suspended the grace period, a cash advance, a transfer with a separate APR, or residual interest through the date the issuer received payment. Read the next statement and ask the issuer to identify the balance category and calculation period.

Use this issuer-specific verification checklist
Before relying on a card offer, locate all four documents and confirm the listed items:
- Offer terms: required amount, qualifying transaction definition, deadline, posting requirement, reward timing and any account-standing conditions.
- Cardholder agreement: purchase, cash-advance and transfer APRs; grace-period conditions; how the grace period is restored; interest calculation; payment allocation; and late-payment provisions.
- Current statement: statement balance, minimum payment, due date, time zone, payment address or online cutoff, and balances by APR category.
- Account activity: posted eligible purchases, pending items, refunds, credits, disputes, payment receipt and reward status.
For U.S. consumers, CFPB guidance reviewed September 23, 2024, addresses the 21-day billing notice requirement, and guidance reviewed December 9, 2024, addresses receipt timing and the 5 p.m. due-date rule. Those are general protections and explanations, not a substitute for the cutoff and terms printed by your issuer.
Quick Recap
A practical one-cycle plan
- Read the offer and card agreement before charging anything.
- Set aside the cash needed to pay the resulting statement.
- Track only posted, eligible net purchases and subtract returns or credits.
- When the statement closes, record the statement balance, minimum payment and due date.
- Schedule the full statement balance early if avoiding purchase interest is the goal and the grace period applies.
- If full payment is impossible, send at least the minimum before the issuer’s cutoff and then pay more quickly.
- Confirm receipt, inspect the next statement for interest or residual interest, and recheck the reward after any adjustment.
