What a charge-off is—and why the calendar matters
A charge-off is an accounting treatment for a seriously delinquent credit-card account. It is not forgiveness, cancellation, or a transfer of ownership that ends what you owe. The issuer can still collect, sell or assign the account, and report accurate negative information after the charge-off.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s 2023 Consumer Credit Card Market Report describes resolving delinquent debt before accounts reach 180 days of delinquency, at which point credit-card accounts are generally charged off in accordance with Office of the Comptroller of the Currency guidance. A 2017 CFPB report likewise says accounts that remain delinquent for 180 days must generally be charged off, subject to limited exceptions. Treat 180 days as a regulatory benchmark, not a promise that every issuer uses identical dates, notices, or internal procedures. An issuer may accelerate collection activity well before that point.

Every missed due date can add fees, interest, credit-reporting damage, and collection pressure. The practical goal is therefore not to calculate the last possible day. It is to establish an affordable arrangement while the issuer still has an account to work with.

Your first 24 hours: a step-by-step plan
1. Calculate a payment you can actually sustain
Before calling, write down monthly take-home income and essential expenses such as housing, utilities, food, transportation, insurance, medical care, taxes, and minimum payments on other debts. Subtract essentials from income. The amount left is the ceiling for a proposed payment; choose a figure that leaves room for ordinary fluctuations rather than promising every remaining dollar.
- Use recent pay records, benefit statements, bank statements, and bills so the numbers reflect current cash flow.
- List the date income arrives and the dates each bill is due.
- Identify whether the hardship is temporary, such as a layoff or medical leave, or ongoing, such as a permanent income reduction.
- Do not fund this card by skipping rent, utilities, food, insurance, taxes, or another account that would create a more serious problem.
2. Call the issuer immediately
Use the customer-service number on the back of the card or on a recent statement. Ask for the hardship, loss-mitigation, or account-assistance department if the first representative cannot discuss payment alternatives. Be direct and specific:
"I am experiencing [brief reason for hardship]. I cannot afford the current minimum payment. I can pay $___ per month beginning on ___. I expect my normal payment to resume around ___. What temporary hardship options, fee relief, interest-rate reduction, or lower-payment arrangements are available?"

The CFPB’s consumer guidance, reviewed September 2, 2026, says to contact the card company immediately, explain why the minimum is unaffordable, state what you can pay, and say when normal payments might resume. Do not wait for a formal charge-off notice before making this request.
3. Ask what the proposed arrangement changes
Before agreeing, ask the representative to explain:

A representative may offer only the programs available under that issuer’s policies. Ask whether another department can review your account, but do not assume a second call guarantees a different result.
4. Get the terms in writing and monitor them
Request a letter, secure-message confirmation, or agreement showing the payment, dates, interest and fee treatment, reporting language, and consequences of default. Save the document with your call notes, the representative’s name or identification number, and the date and time. Set calendar reminders several days before each due date. Review every statement to confirm that the agreed amount and credits appear correctly; contact the issuer promptly if they do not.

There is no single federal hardship plan with uniform terms. Depending on the issuer and your circumstances, a representative may discuss a temporary lower payment, reduced interest rate, fee relief, a payment extension, or another accommodation. These options can make the account manageable, but the balance generally remains owed and the account may be closed or restricted.
Temporary lower payment
A defined lower payment can prevent the account from progressing while income recovers. Confirm whether interest continues and whether the reduced payment covers new interest. A payment that is affordable today may not amortize the balance, so ask what the balance and required payment will be when the period ends.
Interest-rate or fee relief
Reducing the rate or waiving certain fees can slow balance growth. Ask which fees are waived, for how long, and whether any previously charged fees are reversed or merely stopped going forward. Obtain the effective date in writing.

Payment extension or other accommodation
An extension may move a due date or defer a payment. Clarify whether deferred amounts accrue interest, become due in a lump sum, or are added to later payments. Ask how the issuer will report the account during the accommodation; an extension is not automatically the same as being current for credit-reporting purposes.

The right path depends on whether you can resume payments, need help organizing several accounts, or cannot repay the full principal. Terms, fees, and eligibility vary, so use the table as a decision framework rather than a guarantee.
| Option | Do payments continue during enrollment? | Fees and interest | Are accounts closed? | Credit and lawsuit risk | Who controls funds? | If it fails |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Issuer hardship arrangement | Usually yes, at the agreed amount; confirm the schedule. | Issuer-specific; ask about reduced interest and fee relief. | May be closed or frozen; ask before accepting. | Reporting treatment and collection status depend on the written terms. | You pay the issuer directly. | A missed arrangement payment can end the accommodation and resume normal collection activity. |
| Nonprofit credit counseling with a debt-management plan | Yes. You make one periodic payment to the agency, which distributes it to creditors. | Ask about setup and monthly fees, creditor interest-rate concessions, and the total repayment cost. | Ask which accounts must be closed; program rules vary. | Accounts are repaid rather than erased, but missed payments can still cause harm. | The counseling agency receives and distributes your payment. | Ask what happens after a missed payment and whether creditors remove concessions. |
| Debt consolidation | You repay a new lender under its terms while the cards are paid or transferred. | The rate, origination charges, term, and total cost depend on the lender; no single terms apply. | Card accounts may remain open, be closed, or be frozen depending on the arrangement. | Applying for and servicing new credit can affect your file; failure to pay the new loan can lead to collection or a lawsuit. | You control loan proceeds, subject to the lender’s terms. | You can owe the new loan and any card balances that were not fully repaid. |
| Debt settlement | Companies commonly tell consumers to stop paying while money accumulates; that creates additional risk. | Late fees and interest can grow. Settlement-company fees and any tax on forgiven debt require review. | Cards are generally not usable while unpaid; exact treatment varies. | CFPB warns of credit damage, intensified collections, and possible lawsuits. | Funds are accumulated for proposed settlements, often under a company’s process; understand access and fees. | Creditors may refuse an offer, sue, or continue collecting while fees and balances grow. |
Debt consolidation is not the same as settlement: a consolidation loan normally replaces or pays debts that still must be repaid, while settlement seeks creditor agreement to accept less than the claimed balance. Compare the written total cost and failure consequences, not just the advertised monthly payment.
Nonprofit counseling versus debt settlement
What a nonprofit counselor can do
A nonprofit credit-counseling organization can review your budget, help prioritize bills, and may arrange a debt-management plan. You typically make one periodic payment to the agency, which distributes it to participating creditors. The debt is not erased. Before enrolling, ask:
- What are the one-time setup fee and recurring monthly fee?
- Which creditors and account types participate?
- Which accounts must be closed, and can you use them again after completion?
- What interest-rate concessions are confirmed by each creditor?
- What happens if a payment is late, returned, or unaffordable?
- How long will repayment take and what is the estimated total paid?
A counselor should help you make a workable budget, not instruct you to stop paying creditors. Verify that the proposed payment still leaves enough for essential bills.

Why stopping payments for settlement is dangerous
Debt-settlement companies commonly ask clients to stop paying creditors while deposits accumulate. The CFPB warns that this can add late fees and interest, damage credit, intensify collection efforts, and expose you to lawsuits. A creditor is not required to accept a settlement offer, and a company cannot guarantee that every account will settle for a particular percentage.
Walk away from claims of guaranteed savings, “pennies on the dollar,” a newly created government program, or a demand for substantial fees before a successful result and creditor agreement. The Federal Trade Commission advises people who are already behind to contact creditors directly and seek a lower, manageable payment plan. If forgiven debt is proposed, ask a qualified tax professional about possible tax consequences before accepting.

Identify and validate the account
Do not ignore the contact, but do not provide bank details or promise payment before you know who is contacting you and what is claimed. Ask for the collector’s name, company, mailing address, original creditor, amount claimed, and validation information. Compare the details with your statements. If the debt is unfamiliar, inaccurate, duplicated, or for the wrong person, dispute it promptly using the instructions and address supplied with the validation notice. Keep copies and proof of delivery.
Decide what you can pay without sacrificing essentials
If the debt is yours, calculate a payment that does not make rent, utilities, food, insurance, medical care, taxes, or another essential account unaffordable. The CFPB specifically warns that falling behind on another bill to pay this one can create more problems. A collector’s urgency does not change your ability to pay.

Put every promise in writing before sending money
Request a written agreement stating the amount to be paid, payment dates, acceptable methods, any pause in collection activity, and whether the remaining balance will be forgiven or considered satisfied. Do not rely on a verbal assurance that a payment will stop calls or end the debt. Keep the agreement, receipts, canceled checks, and account statements together.

What to expect on your credit report
Accurate negative information—including late payments, collections, and charge-offs—generally remains on a credit report for seven years from the relevant delinquency or activity date. Paying the account does not automatically erase accurate history. Payment can change the balance or status, but it does not give you a right to have truthful information deleted.
Review reports from each bureau for the original creditor, balance, dates, account status, and duplicate collection entries. Dispute information that is inaccurate, incomplete, or cannot be verified, following the bureau’s instructions and keeping supporting records. You can challenge inaccurate information yourself; paying a credit-repair company is not required simply to submit a dispute.
A practical decision sequence
- Today: calculate your sustainable payment and call the issuer.
- During the call: describe the hardship, offer the amount and expected recovery date, and ask about every available accommodation.
- Before agreeing: obtain the payment, dates, interest, fees, reporting treatment, account status, and end-of-plan consequences in writing.
- After agreeing: pay by the specified method, set reminders, and reconcile each statement.
- If the issuer will not offer an affordable plan: contact a reputable nonprofit counselor for a budget review and ask for written program costs and consequences.
- If a collector contacts you: request validation, dispute inaccuracies promptly, and document any repayment or settlement agreement before payment.
- If the plan becomes unaffordable: call before missing a payment, explain the change, and ask whether the arrangement can be modified rather than silently defaulting.
Common mistakes that turn a temporary problem into a charge-off
- Waiting until the account is near 180 days delinquent instead of calling at the first missed or unaffordable payment.
- Offering an amount that looks impressive but cannot be maintained after essential expenses.
- Accepting a phone promise without a written schedule and end date.
- Assuming a hardship plan automatically keeps the account open, interest-free, or free of credit reporting.
- Using one credit card or a payday-style advance to make another card’s minimum payment without a sustainable budget.
- Stopping payments because a settlement company says it is required, while balances, fees, and lawsuit risk grow.
- Paying an upfront fee for a guaranteed result or believing a collector’s verbal statement that the balance is forgiven.
- Ignoring statements and credit reports after an arrangement begins.
- Paying a credit-repair company to dispute information that you can challenge directly when it is inaccurate or unverifiable.

Documentation checklist
- Income and essential-expense worksheet used to set the offer.
- Call date, time, telephone number, representative, and reference number.
- Every letter, secure message, agreement, and statement.
- Payment confirmations, bank records, and receipts.
- Credit-report copies and dispute submissions.
Bottom line
The most effective way to avoid a charge-off is early, documented contact with the issuer and a payment you can sustain. The roughly 180-day benchmark explains the urgency but is not a safe waiting period. A written issuer accommodation or carefully evaluated nonprofit debt-management plan can organize repayment; stopping payments for a settlement promise can increase fees, credit damage, collection pressure, and lawsuit risk. If a collector is involved, validate the debt and document the terms before paying.
