Audit an AI coding agent as if it were a separate employee account: give it a named identity, inventory every credential and access path, restrict it to the files and destinations required for one task, and log what it does. If a key may have been exposed, revoke it at the issuer first, invalidate sessions and tokens, remove the agent’s roles, review use, and issue a narrower replacement only after verification. This process protects code and prevents a leaked credential from becoming an unexpected cloud bill, data breach, or account takeover.
What makes a coding agent’s secrets different from an ordinary developer’s?
An AI coding agent can read files, run commands, call tools, modify dependencies, and make network requests in a single session. A developer may understand which credential is being used; an agent can encounter the same credential indirectly through an environment variable, a home-directory file, a build script, a plugin, an MCP server, a log, or generated test output. The practical rule is to treat each agent and session as a separately auditable principal, not as an invisible extension of your own account.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA secret is any value that authorizes an action or identifies a trusted system. Examples include API keys, cloud access tokens, SSH private keys, database passwords, signing certificates, webhook secrets, package-registry tokens, and connection strings. A public identifier, such as a project ID without permission attached, is not itself a secret, but record it when it helps explain where a credential can be used.
The financial exposure can be immediate. A stolen cloud key may create billable compute; a payment API token may issue refunds or charges; a package-publishing token may distribute malicious code under your name. Personal accounts are especially risky because one long-lived credential may span work, side projects, and saved billing methods.

How do you build a complete secret inventory?
Start with metadata, never with secret values. The inventory should tell you who can disable each credential, where it can be used, and what must be checked if it is revoked.
Record the credential and its owner
For every credential, record the issuer, named owner, business or project purpose, creation date, expiration date, last-use time, and the procedure for deletion or rotation. Assign an approver who is different from the person or agent that uses it when the credential can affect production, money, or personal data.
Recommended Free Tools
Record every path an agent could use
Map the repositories, branches, worktrees, tools, plugins, MCP servers, environment variables, home-directory files, CI configuration, build caches, logs, and network destinations available to the session. Include inherited access from the operating-system account and cloud role; an agent may never be handed a key directly yet still read it from a mounted file or process environment.
Use a table like this for each agent:
| Inventory field | What to capture | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Agent identity | Unique name, service account or workload identity, owner, initiating user, session and correlation IDs | Separates one agent’s actions from a developer’s actions and makes an incident traceable |
| Credential metadata | Issuer, type, scope, expiry, last use, rotation or deletion method | Shows who can revoke it and what downstream systems may fail |
| Locations | Repositories, branches, worktrees, environment variables, mounted files, CI secrets, caches and logs | Finds indirect copies that a simple environment-variable review misses |
| Tools and integrations | Shell, package managers, cloud CLIs, plugins, MCP servers and external APIs | Identifies alternate routes to the same permission |
| Destinations | Approved hosts, registries, databases and cloud endpoints | Supports a deny-by-default network policy |
| Review evidence | Approvals, tool calls, commands, file writes, network requests, resulting diffs and retention location | Allows reconstruction after suspected exposure |
Do not paste values into this register. The U.S. Department of Energy’s guidance is explicit: “Never place secrets (passwords, keys, tokens, certificates, or connection strings) in prompts, notebooks, screenshots, agent instructions, committed configuration files, test fixtures, or logs.” Store the inventory in an access-controlled system and refer to a secret by an internal identifier.
How do you map an agent’s effective permissions?
List what the agent can actually do, not merely what its prompt says it should do. Authorization belongs in the surrounding system—identity provider, operating system, repository, firewall, and secret manager—not in model instructions.

Create a dedicated identity
Give each persistent agent or automation workflow a unique identity with a named human owner. Do not reuse a personal administrator account. If several short sessions share an identity for operational reasons, retain a unique session and correlation ID so their actions can still be separated.

Calculate aggregate access
Review permissions across repositories, cloud roles, package registries, issue trackers, databases, plugins, MCP servers, and downstream applications. A read-only repository token combined with a deployment tool may still permit a production change. Remove permissions that are not required for the current task, and set an expiration or review date for exceptions.
Use a staged authorization model
- Default: read-only access to the specific repository and working directory.
- Allowlisted actions: tests, formatting, local builds, and low-risk file reads needed for the task.
- Human approval: pushes, merges, deployments, deletes, permission changes, credential changes, and new network destinations.
- Separate elevation: a short-lived approval or credential for an exceptional action, with an audit record and automatic expiry.
Check both direct and inherited permissions. A role granted to a group, a cloud project, or a package organization can survive removal of one visible token.
How can you stop an agent from reading .env files or SSH keys?
Keep secrets in an approved managed secret service, inject a short-lived value only for the operation that needs it, and deny access to common credential locations by default. A prompt saying “do not read secrets” is not a security control.
Protect files and directories
Block reads of .env, .env.*, ~/.ssh/**, cloud credential directories, credential-manager exports, signing-key paths, and other known secret locations at the filesystem or sandbox layer. Apply the rule to symlinks and mounted volumes, not only to literal paths. Review exceptions individually; if a task genuinely needs one file, expose a minimal, temporary copy with a separate identity.

Limit environment inheritance
Start the agent with a clean environment rather than inheriting the full shell. Pass only the variables required for the current command, and redact them from command output and logs. Verify that child processes, build tools, and test runners do not receive unrelated credentials automatically.
Constrain shell and network access
Use an ephemeral, firewalled runtime where possible. Deny arbitrary outbound traffic and allow only documented registries, source hosts, and service endpoints. Block cloud metadata services and local credential sockets unless a reviewed task requires them. A network allowlist limits exfiltration even if an agent encounters a secret.
Keep authorization outside instructions
Model instructions can explain the task but cannot enforce a boundary. Enforce file, process, network, and tool permissions in the runner, operating system, identity provider, secret manager, and firewall. GitHub describes ephemeral firewalled execution, repository-scoped access, and automatic security validation for its coding-agent environment; treat such platform controls as useful layers, not substitutes for issuer-side revocation.
How do you detect that an agent has exposed a secret?
Detection must cover source code, history, generated output, dependencies, tools, and telemetry. A clean current working tree does not prove that a value was never committed, printed, or transmitted.
Scan before and after every agent run
- Scan the working tree for recognizable credential patterns and high-entropy values.
- Scan all Git history, tags, branches, and generated artifacts, not only the latest diff.
- Inspect agent-created diffs for hard-coded values, debug output, altered permission files, and dependency changes.
- Review package and dependency updates for known advisories and unexpected install scripts.
- Enable push protection so recognizable credentials are blocked before entering repository history.
GitHub reported an average of 26 credential matches per second in public scanning during the second quarter of 2026. That figure describes detection volume, not the probability that your repository is compromised; it illustrates why automated scanning and push blocking should run continuously rather than after an incident.

Log actions outside the agent’s control
Centralize redacted logs in an append-only or otherwise protected location. Capture the initiating user, agent identity, session and correlation IDs, tool and command, file read or write, destination, approval decision, and resulting diff. Record denied actions as well as successful ones. Do not log secret values, full authorization headers, or unredacted command environments.
Alert on high-signal behavior
Prioritize alerts for reads of credential paths, access to cloud metadata, unexpected network destinations, attempts to disable scanning, large archive creation, bulk file reads, permission changes, and requests to print environment variables. Correlate these events with the exact session and approval so an investigator can distinguish a deliberate test from an actual exposure.
What should you do if an agent may have exposed an API key?
Assume compromise until the issuer confirms otherwise. Containment at the issuer is more important than deleting a line from the repository because a copied key may already exist in logs, caches, forks, or another system.
- Stop the session. Disable the agent identity or terminate its runtime to prevent additional actions. Preserve relevant logs and the generated diff before cleanup.
- Delete or disable the credential at its issuer. Use the provider’s revocation control, not only a local file deletion. OpenAI’s issuer guidance specifically recommends deleting a compromised API key and reviewing API usage.
- Invalidate active sessions and tokens. Revoke refresh tokens, temporary credentials, signed sessions, and registry or database sessions that could have been created with the exposed key.
- Remove roles and integrations. Detach cloud roles, repository permissions, plugins, MCP connections, webhooks, and service accounts that the agent used or could have used.
- Review usage and audit logs. Check issuer activity, billing, repository events, agent tool logs, network telemetry, and downstream systems for access outside the expected time, location, volume, or purpose.
- Preserve evidence. Keep timestamps, identities, commands, destinations, approvals, and affected files in a protected incident record. Avoid rewriting history until the investigation determines what must be removed and what must be retained.
- Issue a replacement only after cleanup. Create a dedicated, short-lived credential with narrower scope, a named owner, an expiry, and monitoring. Update the approved secret store rather than placing it in source, prompts, fixtures, or logs.
- Verify downstream authorization. Test that the old key, sessions, integrations, and inherited roles no longer work, and confirm that the replacement works only for the intended operation.
When the key was committed to Git
Revocation comes first. Then remove the value from reachable branches, tags, pull requests, build artifacts, caches, and logs according to your repository-retention policy. A history rewrite can reduce future exposure but cannot recall clones or forks, so continue monitoring the old credential’s issuer activity after cleanup.
When billing or personal data may be involved
Check usage and invoices immediately for unexpected compute, storage, messaging, or API calls. Notify the account owner or finance contact, preserve records for a dispute, and apply spending limits or project-level quotas where available. If personal or regulated data may have been accessed, follow the applicable incident-notification and privacy process rather than treating the event as only a code leak.

How do you test an emergency kill switch?
Run a controlled exercise before you need it. Microsoft recommends testing a revocation path that disables the agent, rotates credentials, invalidates tokens, and removes stale permissions.
- Choose a non-production agent identity and a test credential with the same permission shape as the real one.
- Record the expected owner, approver, issuer controls, downstream integrations, and verification checks.
- Disable the agent identity and confirm that new sessions cannot start.
- Delete or rotate the test credential at its issuer.
- Invalidate active sessions, refresh tokens, and temporary credentials.
- Remove repository, cloud, tool, plugin, and MCP permissions that are no longer justified.
- Attempt the previously permitted operation from the old session and token; it should fail.
- Check issuer, agent, network, and billing logs for any surviving activity.
- Restore only the minimum access required, with a new expiry and approval record.
Measure mean time to revoke from the first alert to confirmed denial. Also measure how long it takes to identify the owner and affected systems; a technically fast deletion is not useful if nobody knows which key to delete.
Which controls prevent, detect, contain, and explain agent risk?
No single control is sufficient. Layer controls so a mistaken read is blocked, a bypass is detected, and a compromised credential can be disabled quickly.
| Control objective | Practical controls | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|---|
| Prevention | Dedicated identities, least privilege, short-lived tokens, managed secret stores, deny-by-default tools, firewalls and restricted file paths | Permission review, exception approval, expiry and runtime policy |
| Detection | Working-tree and history scanning, push protection, CodeQL, dependency advisories, anomaly alerts and credential-file or unexpected-network alerts | Scan results, blocked pushes, alert decisions and triage notes |
| Containment | Issuer-side deletion, token invalidation, role removal, session termination and a tested emergency stop | Revocation timestamps, failed-use tests and downstream confirmations |
| Accountability | Named owner, initiating user, session and correlation IDs, scoped approvals and immutable logs outside the agent’s control | Redacted event records linked to the resulting diff or deployment |
| Usability versus risk | Allowlisted reads and tests; human approval for pushes, merges, deployments, deletes, permission changes, credential changes and new destinations | Approval rationale, approver identity and expiration |
What is a practical audit cadence?
Use continuous controls for high-risk paths and scheduled reviews for everything else.
- Every session: start with a clean environment, enforce file and network policy, record a session ID, and inspect the diff and tool log before accepting changes.
- Every push or release: run secret scanning, dependency checks, and a human review for permission or credential changes.
- Weekly or per sprint: review new agents, tools, MCP servers, network destinations, denied-action alerts, and credentials nearing expiry.
- Monthly: reconcile issuer usage with the inventory, remove stale roles, and check for credentials whose last use no longer matches a business purpose.
- Quarterly: run the kill-switch exercise, review aggregate permissions, test restore procedures, and update owners and approvers.
What should be on the final audit checklist?
- Name the agent, owner, approver, repositories, tools, MCP servers, environments and network destinations.
- Inventory every credential path and effective permission using metadata only.
- Remove secrets from prompts, instructions, source, fixtures, screenshots, notebooks, logs and unrestricted environment access.
- Replace personal or static credentials with dedicated, short-lived, scope-limited credentials.
- Enforce deny-by-default permissions and explicit approval for irreversible or credential-changing actions.
- Enable secret scanning and push protection; inspect generated diffs and dependency changes.
- Centralize redacted audit logs with identity, scope, action, resource, destination, approval and correlation ID.
- Rehearse disable, delete or rotate, invalidate, remove, verify and restore steps.
- After an incident, review issuer usage, agent sessions, repository history and downstream systems before issuing replacements.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an AI coding agent use my personal SSH key safely?
Avoid it whenever possible. Create a separate, restricted identity for the repository or task, keep its lifetime short, and require an explicit approval for operations such as pushing or deploying; a personal key makes attribution and clean revocation much harder.
Does deleting a secret from a .env file fix an exposure?
No. Copies may remain in Git history, shell history, build caches, logs, pull-request artifacts, container layers, or forks. Revoke the credential at its issuer, then investigate and remove surviving copies according to your retention and incident procedures.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →How can I tell whether a revoked token was actually used?
Use the issuer’s access and billing logs, then correlate timestamps with agent session IDs, tool calls, network telemetry, repository events, and downstream application logs. Look for activity outside the agent’s approved scope, location, volume, or time window.
Should I let an agent access a secret manager directly?
Only when the task requires it and the secret manager can enforce a narrowly scoped, short-lived read. Prefer an intermediary that injects the minimum value for one operation, prevents the agent from listing unrelated secrets, and records the request and approval.
