The result is only meaningful when you record the holdings date and define what “AI-related” means. A thematic index membership, a fund name, or a company’s reputation does not tell you what percentage of its revenue comes from artificial intelligence.
This guide shows a repeatable holdings audit. It is an exposure estimate, not a stock-picking signal or a recommendation to buy or sell.

Start with the three choices that determine your percentage
Before opening a spreadsheet, write down three decisions:
- Holdings date: the date for account values and the dates of the fund holdings files you use.
- Denominator: the portfolio value against which exposure will be measured.
- AI classification: the rule that decides which issuers count as AI-related.
Change any one of these and the percentage can change without a single trade. A portfolio measured on June 30 using investable assets and a broad ecosystem definition is not directly comparable with one measured on December 31 using equities only and a revenue screen.

Use this formula:
AI exposure % = (classified direct holdings + classified holdings inside funds) ÷ portfolio denominator × 100
Report the dollar amount as well as the percentage. Someone reading “10% AI exposure” needs to know whether that means $10,000 of a $100,000 portfolio or $100,000 of a $1 million portfolio.
How much of my portfolio is invested in AI stocks? Set the perimeter and date
Choose the accounts and assets included
List every account you intend to audit: taxable brokerage accounts, retirement plans, workplace plans, trusts or other investment accounts. Decide whether the denominator is:
- the full portfolio, including bonds and cash;
- investable assets, excluding emergency cash or assets outside your investment plan; or
- equities only.
Do not mix denominators. If you calculate AI holdings against equities but describe the result as a share of your whole portfolio, the exposure will be overstated.
Freeze a measurement date
Record each position’s market value on one date, preferably using the same closing-price convention across accounts. Fund holdings are usually published after the date they represent, so record both the portfolio valuation date and each underlying holdings date. A fund file dated March 31 may be the latest available document for a portfolio valued on April 15; label that lag instead of presenting the holdings as April 15 facts.
Build an audit worksheet
Create columns for account, ticker or identifier, issuer, security type, shares, price, market value, fund holdings date, AI classification, source URL and notes. Keep a separate line for each direct security and each fund. This makes stale data, missing holdings and duplicate issuers visible.

What counts as an AI-related company?
There is no single official worldwide list of AI stocks. Pick one rule, apply it consistently, and put the rule and its effective date at the top of your worksheet. The following approaches answer different questions.

|---|---|---|---|
| Cross-index or theme | Include companies appearing in a specified number of AI indices or thematic screens. | Market recognition across index providers. | Index methodology and rebalance dates can differ; membership does not state AI revenue. |
| Revenue plus theme | Include companies assessed for near-term AI revenue exposure and competitive position or ability to execute. | A blend of commercial exposure and strategic role. | Qualitative judgments and revenue estimates may not be comparable across issuers. |
| Broader ecosystem | Include application software, infrastructure software, hyperscalers, hardware, semiconductors and other suppliers you judge economically dependent on AI investment. | Portfolio sensitivity to the AI build-out, including enablers. | Produces the widest result and can include businesses with little disclosed AI revenue. |
Using a cross-index screen
As an example of a documented operational rule, the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) counted companies appearing in at least two of seven AI indices and excluded companies appearing in only one. Its February 25, 2025 study identified 83 companies under that rule after discarding 115 one-index names. That is ESMA’s research definition, not an industry-wide standard. See the ESMA report for the methodology.
Using a revenue-plus-theme screen
A fund prospectus can illustrate a different boundary. The February 2, 2026 prospectus for the First Trust Bloomberg Artificial Intelligence ETF describes Bloomberg Intelligence assessments of near-term AI revenue exposure and a company’s position and ability to execute in the AI competitive landscape. It lists categories such as application software, infrastructure software, hyperscalers, hardware and semiconductors. Treat that as an example of a combined methodology, not proof that every issuer in the fund receives the same share of revenue from AI. The prospectus is available in the SEC filing.
Keep “AI company” separate from “AI revenue share”
An issuer may qualify because it supplies computing infrastructure, is positioned to benefit from AI spending, or appears in a thematic index. None of those facts establishes that an identical percentage of its stock value or financial-statement revenue comes from AI. If you want a revenue-only estimate, use disclosed segment information and state that you are measuring reported revenue, not economic sensitivity or market expectations.
Separate direct shares from funds
Record individual companies first
Mark every individual company share as a direct holding. Apply your classification rule to the issuer and multiply the number of shares by the market price on your valuation date. If the same issuer appears in several accounts, keep the account lines for auditability but create an aggregate issuer total for the final exposure number.

Collect actual fund holdings
For each mutual fund or ETF, obtain the latest available holdings from the fund’s website, prospectus, shareholder report or regulatory filing. Investor.gov advises investors to inspect actual fund holdings and fund documents; it notes that fund holdings are disclosed quarterly in Form N-Q and shareholder reports. Its guidance on non-traditional index funds also says, “To ensure a fund adds diversity to your portfolio, you should understand how the index was constructed.” Read the guidance at Investor.gov’s index-fund page.

Do not classify a fund solely from words such as “technology,” “growth” or “innovation” in its name. A broad-market fund can hold the same large issuers as a specialist technology fund, while a fund with an AI label may use a narrower or different index rule. Save the holdings file and its date with your worksheet.
Handle incomplete disclosures
If a fund publishes only its largest positions, mark the unobserved portion as unknown rather than treating it as zero. If the latest file is old, show the holdings date and a “stale” flag. A precise-looking percentage built from incomplete or mismatched dates is less useful than a range or a clearly qualified estimate.
How do I calculate my exposure to AI? Look through each fund
Apply the look-through multiplication
For every fund position, multiply the amount you own by the fund’s reported weight in each classified issuer:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →look-through value = your fund market value × issuer weight in the fund
Repeat for every classified issuer in every fund. Then add direct shares in the same issuer. Aggregate the issuer once so that a company repeated across three funds is not counted as three unrelated exposures.
Worked example (illustrative numbers)
Suppose your portfolio denominator is $100,000 on the valuation date. You hold two individual companies and two funds:

| Position | Your value | Classified issuer weight | Look-through AI value |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct issuer A | $4,000 | Direct holding | $4,000 |
| Direct issuer B | $2,000 | Direct holding | $2,000 |
| Fund X | $20,000 | A 8%; C 5% | A $1,600; C $1,000 |
| Fund Y | $15,000 | B 6%; D 4% | B $900; D $600 |
The classified total is $10,100, so estimated AI exposure is $10,100 ÷ $100,000 = 10.1%. Issuer A contributes $5,600 ($4,000 direct plus $1,600 through Fund X); issuer B contributes $2,900. Those aggregate figures are the ones to use for concentration analysis.
Show what is known and what is estimated
Direct positions are normally observable at your valuation date. Fund look-through values are estimates based on a reported portfolio weight, which may have changed since the fund’s holdings date. Label the result “estimated look-through exposure” and list the holdings dates beside each fund. If derivatives, cash, securities lending or a fund’s “other” category prevent a complete look-through, disclose that limitation.
Do my ETFs already own AI stocks? Measure overlap and concentration
Count issuers, not just funds
Make an issuer-level table with columns for direct value, Fund 1 value, Fund 2 value and total. Sort it from largest to smallest. Also record how many funds contain each issuer. A portfolio with five funds can have less diversification than one with two funds if all five repeat the same large companies.
Investor.gov warns that a mutual fund or ETF “won’t necessarily provide diversification, especially if it is narrowly focused (such as on one industry sector).” Its asset-allocation guidance is at Investor.gov’s diversification page.
Calculate useful concentration measures
- Top-issuer share: largest issuer’s classified value divided by total classified value.
- Top-five share: combined classified value of the five largest issuers divided by total classified value.
- Fund repetition: number of funds containing each issuer, alongside the issuer’s aggregate dollar value.
- Layer concentration: percentage of AI exposure held directly versus through funds.
- Sector and geography: classify each issuer by business role and domicile to reveal whether exposure is concentrated in one type of company or market.
These measures distinguish broad economic exposure from a stack of overlapping claims on the same issuers. A high percentage spread across applications, infrastructure, hardware and software is a different risk pattern from the same percentage concentrated in two companies.
How reliable is the estimate?
Check the holdings date and source
For each fund, rank your evidence: a dated full holdings file is strongest; a shareholder report or regulatory filing is useful when current; a top-10 list is partial. Note whether the fund has rebalanced since the file date. Market movements can change both issuer weights and your portfolio denominator between reporting dates.

Reconcile totals
Compare the sum of reported fund weights with 100%. Differences may reflect cash, derivatives, short positions, rounding or an “other” bucket. Do not assign the unexplained remainder to AI without evidence. Keep a separate “unclassified” amount so your classified total is not silently inflated.
Use ranges when necessary
If a fund discloses only that an issuer is somewhere within a broad category, calculate a conservative value using only identified holdings and a wider value using a clearly stated assumption. Present both and explain what information would narrow the range. Never convert missing data into a zero exposure claim.
What ESMA’s numbers can—and cannot—tell you
ESMA analyzed holdings for 10,370 EU-domiciled equity funds from January 2021 through June 2024. Under its two-of-seven-indices definition, the 83 identified AI companies represented 12% of passive-fund portfolios and 14% of active-fund portfolios as of June 2024. The collective market value of those holdings rose from EUR 242 billion to EUR 474 billion over the study period.
Recommended Free Tools
Those figures illustrate a holdings-based method and the potential scale of indirect exposure. They are not a 2026 market snapshot, not a measure of your portfolio, and not a statistic for all global funds. The sample is EU-domiciled equity funds, the end date is June 2024, and the classification is ESMA’s own screen. Use the report as a methodological reference, then calculate your own dated result.
Review your exposure over time
Repeat the same audit
Save a dated copy of your worksheet and repeat it on a schedule that matches your portfolio review—quarterly is practical when fund holdings are reported quarterly. Keep the same classification rule if you want a meaningful time series; if you change the rule, show the old and new results separately.
Separate market drift from trading
Record whether a change came from price movements, fund rebalancing, a new holdings file, deposits and withdrawals, or your own trades. Investor.gov explains that market movements can shift holdings away from an intended asset allocation and that rebalancing may restore the planned mix. Rebalancing is a portfolio-governance decision, not an automatic consequence of an AI percentage.
Compare with your written plan
After each measurement, ask whether the exposure fits your goals, time horizon, risk tolerance, liquidity needs, fees and intended asset allocation. A larger estimate is not automatically better or worse. The audit’s purpose is to reveal an exposure you can evaluate deliberately.
Quick Recap
Common errors and how to correct them
- Using a fund name as proof: replace the label with the latest disclosed holdings and index methodology.
- Mixing dates: put the portfolio valuation date and every fund holdings date in separate columns.
- Counting a repeated issuer multiple times: aggregate by issuer after calculating each fund’s look-through value.
- Calling index membership AI revenue: describe the inclusion rule; use reported segment revenue only for a separate revenue analysis.
- Ignoring the denominator: state whether cash, bonds and non-investment assets are included.
- Treating unknown holdings as zero: show an unclassified bucket or a range.
- Assuming more funds means more diversification: inspect top holdings and index construction across every fund.
- Turning an estimate into a trade: use the result to check fit with your plan, fees and risk capacity rather than as a stand-alone buy or sell trigger.
