Start with the scheme’s latest factsheet and Scheme Information Document (SID), not its name or recent return. Check the SEBI Riskometer and Potential Risk Class (PRC), then examine the actual portfolio: duration and maturity, issuer ratings, issuer and group concentrations, security liquidity, and the date you may need your money. Debt mutual funds can lose principal; they are not assured-return products.
What you are assessing when you buy a debt mutual fund
A debt mutual fund pools investors’ money to buy fixed-income instruments such as government securities, treasury instruments, certificates of deposit, commercial paper, corporate bonds and other permitted debt assets. The scheme’s net asset value (NAV) changes as the market value of those instruments changes.

That means a debt fund is not the same as a bank deposit with a promised maturity value. The value of a bond can fall even when its issuer has not missed a payment, and an issuer can later be downgraded or default. Selling an underlying security can also be difficult or expensive when markets are stressed.
The Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI) states: “Mutual Fund Schemes are not guaranteed or assured return products.” AMFI also identifies the possibility of loss of principal. Treat every risk label as a description of exposure, not as a promise about your outcome.

Step 1: Collect the documents that describe the scheme
Latest factsheet
Use the most recent factsheet available for the date on which you are deciding. It normally provides the portfolio, asset allocation, maturity or duration information, issuer ratings, concentration data, expense information and the scheme’s risk displays. A portfolio can change after publication, so note the factsheet date and do not mix it with older figures without saying so.
Scheme Information Document
Read the SID for the scheme objective, permitted instruments, category, investment limits, valuation approach, borrowing or liquidity provisions, and other operating rules. The category name is only a starting point; the SID tells you what the manager is actually allowed to do.
Portfolio disclosure and related notices
Use the current portfolio disclosure to verify what the scheme owns rather than relying on a marketing description. Check whether any material event, rating change, side-pocketing action or other notice has been issued. If you cannot establish the date of a figure, treat it as unverified rather than assuming it is current.

What the Riskometer tells you
SEBI’s Riskometer is a standardized display intended to help investors gauge a mutual-fund scheme’s risk level. It applies across mutual-fund categories, including debt schemes. Use it as a first screening tool: a higher displayed level should prompt closer examination, but the display does not identify every issuer, concentration or liquidity issue.
What the PRC tells you
SEBI’s Potential Risk Class (PRC) framework for debt schemes was established by a June 7, 2021 circular. The framework sets maximum parameters for two dimensions:
- Interest-rate risk: measured using Macaulay Duration.
- Credit risk: measured using Credit Risk Value.
Under SEBI’s consolidated mutual-fund circular, a debt scheme discloses its PRC matrix and the selected cell. The selected cell describes the maximum exposure permitted by the framework; the scheme may be taking less risk than that maximum at a particular date. Therefore, read the selected PRC cell alongside the actual portfolio and its date.
What neither label can do
Neither the Riskometer nor the PRC predicts the next NAV, guarantees a return, or measures whether a loss would be affordable for you. A scheme can remain within its disclosed limits while still experiencing a loss when rates rise, spreads widen, an issuer is downgraded, or a security becomes hard to sell.

Step 3: Measure interest-rate risk through duration and maturity
Why rates move bond prices
Fixed-income market values generally move inversely to prevailing interest rates. When market yields rise, existing bonds with lower coupons become less attractive and their prices generally fall. When yields fall, existing bonds generally gain value. The size of the movement depends partly on coupon, maturity and yield.
Longer-term securities generally fluctuate more in response to rate changes than short-term securities. A portfolio with greater duration therefore tends to show larger NAV movements for a given rate change than a portfolio with shorter duration. This is a sensitivity relationship, not a forecast of a particular return.
How to use the duration number
Find the portfolio’s Macaulay Duration or the duration measure reported in the factsheet, and review the maturity profile as well. A longer duration means that a rate move can have a larger price effect. Compare that exposure with the period for which you can leave the money invested and with your ability to tolerate an interim fall in NAV.
Do not treat duration as a guaranteed holding period. It is not a promise that the NAV will be unchanged if you hold for that many years, nor is it a guaranteed return estimate. The portfolio can change, yields can move unpredictably and credit or liquidity events can dominate the result.
Reinvestment risk
Interest and principal cash flows may have to be reinvested at yields different from those available when the original securities were purchased. If rates fall, future reinvestment may occur at lower yields; if rates rise, the market value of existing holdings can fall before higher-yield opportunities become available. This risk matters even when every scheduled payment is made.
Step 4: Examine credit quality, downgrades and concentration
What credit risk includes
Credit risk is the possibility that an issuer cannot pay interest or principal when due. If a default occurs, the scheme may not recover the full amount, and the NAV can fall. A security’s price can also drop when investors expect a downgrade or believe the issuer’s financial condition is deteriorating, before any payment is missed.
Read ratings as information, not insurance
Record the credit rating of each significant issuer and the share of the portfolio it represents. Ratings help describe credit quality, but they do not make default impossible and they can change. Government securities are sovereign obligations, whereas corporate bonds carry the credit risk of their issuers; credit quality varies among corporate issuers.

Check issuer and group concentration
Look for the percentage held in each issuer and in related issuer groups. A problem at one large issuer can have a much greater effect on NAV than the same problem at a small holding. Consider whether you could accept a downgrade, delayed payment or default-related loss at the largest exposures, not merely whether the portfolio’s average rating looks high.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteAlso identify exposure to lower-rated or unrated instruments if permitted by the scheme mandate. A high headline rating for the portfolio does not eliminate concentration risk or the possibility that a security’s rating changes.
Step 5: Account for spread risk
Corporate-bond yields include a credit spread over a reference or government yield. Spreads widen or narrow as market conditions and perceived creditworthiness change. When spreads widen, the market value of a debt security can fall even if the issuer has made every payment and no formal downgrade has occurred.
Floating-rate securities are not immune. Their coupons may reset with a benchmark, but the security can still lose value if its spread over that benchmark widens. Review the portfolio’s mix of fixed-rate and floating-rate instruments and consider spread exposure separately from the direction of policy rates.
Step 6: Test the liquidity of the underlying holdings
Liquidity is the ability to sell a security at or near its assessed value. Bond liquidity varies by instrument, issuer, issue size and market conditions. During a stressed market, a security may attract few buyers, and a seller may need to accept a discount or move the price substantially to complete a trade.

Why liquidity affects your NAV
If a scheme must sell less-liquid holdings to meet redemptions, the sale price may be below the valuation used for the NAV. That price impact is borne by the scheme and can affect remaining investors. A security that appears fairly valued in a normal market is not guaranteed to be saleable at that value when liquidity is tight.
Questions to ask from the portfolio
- What types of instruments dominate the portfolio?
- Are there sizeable positions in securities that trade infrequently?
- Are issuer or group exposures so large that selling could take time?
- Could you need your money during a market disruption rather than in normal conditions?
Do not confuse the ability to submit a redemption request with a guarantee that every underlying bond can be sold immediately at its assessed value.

Step 7: Understand the scheme’s mandate and category
Read the objective and permitted-investment sections of the SID. Identify whether the scheme is designed for a particular maturity range, credit profile, instrument type or interest-rate strategy. A short name or broad category label cannot tell you the current duration, credit concentration or liquidity of the portfolio.
Check whether the current holdings are consistent with the stated mandate. If the scheme’s permitted range is wide, the manager may be able to change duration, credit exposure or instrument mix substantially. That flexibility can be useful, but it also means the portfolio you buy today may not be the portfolio you hold later.

How to compare two debt funds without being misled
Compare disclosures from the same date, or from closely aligned dates, because holdings and duration change. Use the following axes rather than ranking funds only by recent returns:
| Comparison axis | What to inspect | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Interest-rate sensitivity | Duration, maturity profile and the PRC interest-rate component | Longer-term securities generally fluctuate more when rates change. |
| Credit exposure | Issuer ratings, issuer and group concentration, and the PRC credit component | Defaults, downgrades and deteriorating perceived creditworthiness can reduce security values and NAV. |
| Liquidity | Types of securities held and disclosures relevant to selling or redemption | Underlying securities may not be saleable near their assessed value during tight markets. |
| Mandate and fit | SID, scheme category, objective, expected holding horizon and your cash needs | The same portfolio risk can be suitable for one investor and unsuitable for another. |
Past performance is not a substitute for this comparison. AMFI cautions that past performance does not guarantee future performance. A recent return may reflect a favorable rate cycle, temporary spread movement or a portfolio change that will not persist.
A practical pre-investment procedure
- Write down your cash date. Record the earliest date you might need the money and whether that date is flexible.
- Download the latest factsheet and SID. Note publication dates and the scheme’s objective, category and permitted investments.
- Record the Riskometer and PRC. Capture the displayed risk level, the PRC selected cell and the date of each disclosure.
- Map rate sensitivity. Note duration, maturity profile and whether the portfolio is concentrated in longer-term securities.
- Map credit exposure. List major issuers, ratings, issuer or group weights and any lower-rated or unrated holdings allowed by the mandate.
- Assess liquidity. Identify instruments or concentrations that could be difficult to sell during stressed conditions.
- Stress your own decision. Ask whether you could leave the investment untouched through a temporary NAV fall and whether a permanent loss would be tolerable.
- Compare only like-for-like schemes. Use the same risk dimensions and aligned disclosure dates; do not select on return alone.
- Recheck before placing the order. Confirm that no newer portfolio, rating-change notice or material disclosure has replaced the information you used.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
“The fund name says short-term, so it cannot fall.”
Correction: Verify the actual duration and maturity profile. A label does not replace the portfolio disclosure, and even a shorter-duration portfolio can face credit or liquidity losses.
“A high rating means the investment is safe.”
Correction: Check concentration and rating-change risk. Ratings describe credit quality at a point in time; they do not guarantee payment or prevent a downgrade.

“I can redeem at the valuation price whenever I want.”
Correction: Separate your redemption facility from the liquidity of the underlying bonds. In a tight market, selling can require a discount and affect the scheme’s NAV.
“A past return proves the fund is dependable.”
Correction: Examine the risks that produced that return and whether the current portfolio has the same duration, credit and spread exposure. Past performance does not guarantee future results.
“Duration tells me exactly how long to hold.”
Correction: Treat duration as an interest-rate sensitivity measure, not a guaranteed holding period or return forecast.

The same Riskometer level can be acceptable for an investor with a flexible, long time horizon and unacceptable for someone who needs the money on a fixed date. Consider three separate questions:
- When could you need the money? A near-term obligation leaves less time to wait for a rate-related recovery.
- Can you tolerate a temporary fall? A fall can occur even without a default, simply because market yields rise or spreads widen.
- Could you absorb a permanent loss? Credit or liquidity events may not reverse fully.
If you are uncertain about suitability, scheme risk disclosures advise consulting a financial adviser. An adviser cannot remove market risk, but can help relate the scheme’s mandate and exposures to your objectives, tax situation and overall asset allocation.
What this method cannot establish without a named scheme
A general checklist cannot tell you the current duration, ratings, issuer concentrations or liquidity of a particular fund. Those facts change, and a decision about a named scheme requires its latest factsheet, portfolio disclosure and SID, with their dates stated. Regulatory requirements and disclosures can also change over time, so use the current documents when you invest.
