1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAssess a debt mutual fund by matching its portfolio tenor and risk profile to the date you will need your money. Then examine interest-rate sensitivity, credit quality, issuer concentration, liquidity, reinvestment risk, expenses and benchmark-relative returns. Yield-to-maturity (YTM) and past returns are useful comparison clues, not promises: a debt fund’s NAV can fall, and neither the scheme nor its returns are guaranteed.
What you are assessing
A debt mutual fund pools investor money to buy fixed-income instruments such as government securities, treasury bills, certificates of deposit, commercial paper, corporate bonds and money-market securities. The fund earns interest, receives principal repayments and may gain or lose value as market prices change. Your return is reflected in changes in the fund’s NAV, after expenses and any applicable charges.

The central question is not “Which fund has the highest yield?” It is “Can this portfolio reasonably meet my cash need without exposing me to a loss I cannot tolerate when I need to redeem?” That requires separating several risks that are often blended together in a fund’s headline category.

AMFI’s investor material states: “Mutual Fund Schemes are not guaranteed or assured return products.” It also states: “Past performance does not guarantee future performance of any Mutual Fund Scheme.” Treat those statements as operating rules, not boilerplate.

Start with your cash need and loss tolerance
Write down the date, not just the goal
Record when you may need the money, how certain that date is, and whether you might need part of it suddenly. A known payment in a few months creates a different requirement from money that can remain invested for several years. If the date is uncertain, assess the fund against the earliest realistic withdrawal date.
Decide how much temporary loss is acceptable
Debt funds can show a negative NAV period even when no issuer defaults, because bond prices respond to changes in market yields. Ask whether you could continue holding if the NAV fell shortly before your withdrawal date. If the answer is no, a portfolio with substantial duration or credit exposure may be unsuitable for that cash need.
Separate investment horizon from fund maturity
Your holding period and the maturity of the securities are related but not identical. A fund can sell securities before maturity, and its portfolio changes as bonds mature, are bought or sold, or are replaced. Use the fund’s current maturity profile and duration as evidence of present sensitivity, not as a promise about the portfolio on a future date.

Read the stated objective and category name
Debt categories differ by tenor, issuer type and permitted strategy. Read the scheme information document and the latest factsheet to confirm what the fund is designed to hold. Do not infer the actual risk from a short category label alone: two funds with similar names can have different duration, credit and concentration profiles.
Understand what “shorter” generally means
AMFI describes liquid funds as investing in securities with no more than 91 days to maturity, referring to the categorisation framework issued under SEBI guidelines in October 2017. AMFI also notes that shorter-tenor funds generally have lower risk and lower return. That is broad category guidance, not a guarantee about every scheme, holding or future period.
Check the current regulatory classification and portfolio rather than relying on an old article or a remembered category definition. A fund’s mandate, benchmark, permissible instruments and portfolio can change, and the factsheet date tells you how current the disclosed holdings are.

Read the latest factsheet before looking at returns
Use the most recent official factsheet and portfolio disclosure available for the scheme. Capture the disclosure date, because the portfolio may have changed since publication. At minimum, record:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- average maturity, Macaulay duration and modified duration, if reported;
- the maturity buckets and exposure to longer-dated securities;
- issuer names and the percentage of assets in each major position;
- rating distribution and any unrated or lower-rated exposure;
- sector allocation, government-versus-corporate exposure and cash holdings;
- securities that may be harder to sell in stressed markets;
- expense ratio, plan type, exit load and other redemption terms; and
- the benchmark and the periods for which performance is shown.
A factsheet is a snapshot. Use it to understand the portfolio you are considering today, then recheck the disclosure before investing and periodically afterward.
Assess interest-rate risk with duration
Why rates move bond prices
Fixed-income security prices generally move inversely to market interest rates. When yields rise, existing bonds with lower coupons become less attractive and their prices typically fall. When yields fall, existing bonds can become more valuable and their prices may rise. The effect depends on the securities held, their cash flows and the size of the rate move.
Use modified duration as a sensitivity estimate
Modified duration is an estimate of how much a bond or portfolio’s price may change for a small change in yield, with the direction reversed. A higher modified duration means greater approximate price sensitivity. For example, a portfolio with a modified duration of 4 years would have an approximate 4% price decline for a 1-percentage-point rise in yields, before considering convexity, credit-spread changes, fees, cash flows and portfolio trading. This is an illustration of sensitivity, not a forecast of a fund’s NAV.
Longer duration can help when rates fall, but it can create larger mark-to-market losses when rates rise. Compare duration with the date you expect to need the money, rather than treating a higher or lower number as universally better.
Look beyond one duration number
Review the maturity distribution and the fund’s stated strategy as well as modified duration. A portfolio concentrated in a particular maturity bucket can react differently from a more evenly spread portfolio. Also consider whether the manager may extend or shorten duration as market conditions change; the current number may not remain stable.

Assess credit risk separately from rate risk
Default and downgrade risk
An issuer can fail to pay interest or principal. Even without a default, a downgrade or a change in the market’s view of the issuer’s creditworthiness can reduce the security’s price and the fund’s NAV. Credit losses can therefore occur in a portfolio with modest duration.
Read ratings, but do not stop there
Examine the rating mix, the rating agency disclosures and the share of assets in lower-rated, unrated or structured instruments. A rating is an opinion about credit risk, not a guarantee of payment. Check whether the fund’s objective permits changes in credit quality and whether the current portfolio has moved materially from earlier disclosures.
Interpret higher YTM in context
A higher YTM may accompany greater credit risk, longer duration, lower liquidity or a combination of these factors. It is not automatically a better expected realized return. Ask what additional risk appears to be paying for the extra yield and whether you can tolerate that risk.

Check issuer, sector and position concentration
Two funds in the same broad category can have very different concentration risk. Review the percentage invested in the largest issuers, the number of issuers, sector exposure and any group-company concentration. A problem at a large issuer can affect a fund disproportionately when that issuer represents a substantial share of assets.
Concentration should be considered alongside credit quality. A highly rated portfolio can still be exposed to a large single-position loss, while a widely diversified portfolio may carry more lower-rated exposure. Look at both dimensions rather than using diversification as a substitute for credit analysis.
Assess liquidity and redemption risk
Portfolio liquidity
Liquidity is the ability to sell a security near its valuation price. In a stressed market, a fund may be unable to sell a holding quickly or may have to accept a lower price. SEBI’s debt-risk material discusses marketability in terms of the ability to sell near the valuation YTM; this is why a security’s quoted value should not be treated as the same thing as an immediately available cash price.

Look for less-liquid instruments, large positions, unusual structures and sectors that may become difficult to trade under stress. Cash and highly marketable holdings can help meet redemptions, but they also affect the portfolio’s return potential.
Your own liquidity need
A fund may permit redemption while the underlying market is stressed, but the redemption proceeds can reflect falling prices. Do not choose a portfolio that requires perfect market liquidity when your withdrawal date is fixed. Keep near-term spending needs separate from money that can remain invested through volatility.
Include reinvestment risk
When a security matures or pays a coupon, the manager must reinvest the cash. If market yields have fallen, the replacement investment may earn less. A fund with short maturities may experience this risk more frequently, while a longer-duration fund may lock in existing yields for longer but carry more price sensitivity. Neither structure eliminates risk; they expose you to different paths for future returns.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use YTM correctly
What YTM tells you
Portfolio YTM is a point-in-time measure of the yield implied by the securities held, based on their prices, cash flows and maturity assumptions. It is useful for comparing funds when the comparison also includes duration, credit quality, liquidity and expenses.
What YTM does not tell you
YTM is not a guaranteed return for an investor. Realized returns can differ when interest rates or credit spreads change, securities default or are downgraded, cash flows are reinvested at different rates, expenses are deducted, or the manager buys and sells holdings. The portfolio’s YTM also changes as market prices and holdings change.
A practical YTM comparison
When two funds show different YTMs, ask:
- Does the higher-YTM fund hold lower-rated or more concentrated issuers?
- Is its duration materially longer?
- Are its securities less liquid?
- Are expense ratios and plan types comparable?
- Has the difference persisted across factsheet dates, or is it a temporary snapshot?
If you cannot explain the yield difference through the portfolio, do not treat the higher figure as an advantage.

Evaluate returns against a fair benchmark
Match plan, period and benchmark
Compare the same plan type over the same time windows against the scheme’s stated benchmark and relevant peer funds. A direct plan should not be compared casually with a regular plan, and a one-year result should not be used to judge a fund intended for a much longer holding period.
Study weak periods as well as recent gains
Review calendar-year results, rolling periods where available and periods in which rates rose or credit markets weakened. Examine the size and duration of drawdowns, not just the latest return. A fund that outperformed by taking more duration or credit risk may behave differently when conditions reverse.
Past returns describe what happened under earlier portfolios and markets. They do not establish what you will earn. AMFI’s warning that past performance does not guarantee future performance applies even when a fund has a long record.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Account for expenses and direct versus regular plans
Expenses reduce the return that reaches you. Compare expense ratios only on a like-for-like basis: the same scheme, plan type, option and date. Also check exit loads or other charges that could affect a planned redemption.
SEBI explains that regular plans include intermediary commission, while direct plans do not and therefore have lower expenses. A direct plan requires you to conduct your own research and transactions; a regular plan can include intermediary support. The lower expense ratio is a cost difference, not proof that one plan has a safer portfolio. Compare the net outcome after expenses and choose the service arrangement you can manage reliably.
Compare funds with one decision table
| Comparison axis | Questions to answer | What a warning sign looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Time-horizon fit | When might you redeem, and how does that date compare with portfolio maturity and duration? | A fixed near-term need paired with a portfolio whose NAV can move substantially when rates change. |
| Rate sensitivity | What are modified duration, maturity buckets and the manager’s duration range? | High duration that you cannot hold through a potential rate increase. |
| Credit exposure | What are the ratings, issuer quality and lower-rated or unrated allocations? | Extra YTM that is not explained without accepting materially higher credit risk. |
| Concentration | How large are the biggest issuer and sector positions? | A single issuer or group represents a large share of assets. |
| Liquidity | Can the holdings be sold near valuation in stressed conditions? | Large or unusual positions in markets where trading may become thin. |
| Return evidence | How did the same plan perform versus its benchmark in good and weak periods? | Selection based only on the latest return or a single year. |
| Cost | What is the expense ratio, plan type and redemption charge? | Comparing a direct plan’s cost with a regular plan’s return, or ignoring exit terms. |
A repeatable assessment process
- Define the cash need. Write the earliest likely withdrawal date, the amount and the maximum temporary NAV loss you could tolerate.
- Confirm category and objective. Read the current scheme documents and verify the permitted tenor, issuer types and strategy.
- Record portfolio metrics. From the latest factsheet, note maturity, modified duration, YTM, ratings, issuers, sectors, concentration and cash.
- Stress the portfolio. Consider a rise in market yields, a major downgrade or default, wider credit spreads and a redemption during thin trading.
- Compare like with like. Use the same plan type, matching periods, the stated benchmark and comparable categories.
- Subtract costs. Compare expense ratios and redemption charges, and decide whether direct or regular servicing fits your ability to transact.
- Recheck before investing. Confirm the current portfolio, exit terms, tax treatment and scheme documents from official sources. Tax rules and holdings can change.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Choosing the highest YTM. Correct it by pairing YTM with duration, ratings, concentration and liquidity.
- Assuming “debt” means capital protection. Correct it by planning for NAV movements and remembering that schemes are not guaranteed-return products.
- Using category labels as a complete risk assessment. Correct it by reading the actual portfolio and its disclosure date.
- Ignoring issuer concentration. Correct it by checking the largest positions and sector or group exposure.
- Looking only at recent returns. Correct it by reviewing weak periods and benchmark-relative results over consistent windows.
- Comparing direct and regular plans as if costs were identical. Correct it by comparing plan-specific expense ratios and the service you receive.
- Forgetting the withdrawal date. Correct it by matching duration and liquidity to when the money may be needed, not to a generic risk label.
Final decision checklist
Before investing, you should be able to answer “yes” to the questions that matter for your situation:
- Does the fund’s tenor and duration fit the earliest date I may need the money?
- Can I tolerate a temporary NAV decline caused by rising rates?
- Do I understand the credit ratings, issuer concentration and lower-rated exposure?
- Would I still be comfortable redeeming if markets were stressed and liquidity was poor?
- Have I compared YTM with the risks that may be producing it?
- Have I reviewed benchmark-relative returns in both strong and weak periods?
- Have I compared the correct plan type, expense ratio and redemption terms?
- Have I checked the latest official documents rather than relying on an old factsheet?
If any answer is no, gather the missing information before investing. The objective is not to find a fund with the most attractive single statistic; it is to choose a risk and return profile that remains workable when markets and your cash needs do not cooperate.
