How to assess an ASX tech share before you buy

By TheFinanceBase Team 13 min read

A promising technology, a fast-growing market or a popular theme does not automatically make an ASX-listed company a sound investment at its current share price. Before buying, work through five separate questions: what the company sells, what its filings prove about the business, whether it can finance itself, what the valuation assumes, and whether the risk fits your portfolio. This framework is for Australian retail investors making their own assessment, not a recommendation to buy any particular share.

Start with the company, not the technology theme

Technology investing often starts with a story: artificial intelligence, cloud software, cybersecurity, digital payments, medical devices or another expanding market. The story can be relevant, but it is not an investment case on its own. A listed company still has to convert its product into paying customers, revenue, cash and, eventually, returns that justify the price of its shares.

Separate the technology from the issuer. A company may sell technology, license intellectual property, provide a software service, manufacture hardware, or simply use technology to improve a conventional business. The investment questions differ in each case. A business that adopts an online system is not necessarily a technology company, while a software supplier may have recurring subscriptions but substantial customer-acquisition costs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Describe the business in one precise sentence

Write a sentence that identifies the product, the customer and the way money reaches the company. For example: “The company sells subscription software to medium-sized businesses and recognises revenue monthly,” or “It designs devices, sells them through distributors and receives mostly one-off product revenue.” If you cannot write this sentence from the annual report and investor materials, you probably do not yet understand the business well enough to assess the share.

  • Clear Print Quality: Displays high-resolution printing intended to remain legible through regular use and cleaning

Then answer these questions:

  • What specific product or service is sold?
  • Who pays: consumers, small businesses, large enterprises, governments or intermediaries?
  • Is the customer paying a subscription, usage fee, licence, transaction fee, hardware price or a mixture?
  • How long does a typical customer remain, and what causes customers to renew or leave?
  • Which geographic markets generate revenue, and in what currencies?
  • What evidence shows that customers want the product rather than merely trialling or discussing it?

Test demand instead of repeating promotional language

Look for paid contracts, reported revenue, customer retention, order volumes, renewal rates, backlog and cash receipts. Treat announcements about “partnerships”, “pilots”, “pipeline” or “total addressable market” as leads for further questions, not as equivalent to sales. A pilot may never become a material contract, and a large theoretical market does not show that this company can win customers profitably.

For an artificial-intelligence theme, ask whether the company has identifiable customers, revenue attributable to the product and a credible path to cash generation. Also ask whether the company is buying computing capacity or data from suppliers whose prices could rise, and whether a larger platform could offer a similar feature at a lower cost.

Read the primary ASX disclosures in the right order

Australian listed companies publish financial results, annual reports and announcements through the ASX. These documents are the starting point because they contain the issuer’s own accounting, material-risk disclosures and explanations of what changed. Commentary from social media, forums or a marketing presentation can help you find questions, but it should not replace the filings.

  1. Open the latest annual report. Read the business description, revenue note, segment information, cash-flow statement, debt note, related-party disclosures, directors’ report and auditor’s report.
  2. Read the most recent half-year or full-year results. Compare the period with the corresponding prior period and check whether management’s explanation matches the numbers.
  3. Review ASX announcements since that report. Look for capital raisings, trading updates, contract wins or losses, guidance changes, acquisitions, director transactions, suspensions, litigation, financing amendments and changes to major projects.
  4. Check the presentation against the accounts. Non-GAAP measures such as “underlying EBITDA”, annual recurring revenue or adjusted profit may be useful, but reconcile them to statutory revenue, profit and operating cash flow.
  5. Record dates and definitions. A customer count, backlog figure or annual recurring revenue number is meaningful only when you know the measurement date, scope, currency and whether it includes contracts that have not started.

Questions to ask while reading

  • What changed since the previous reporting period, and is the change temporary or structural?
  • Does the company explain a fall in gross margin, an increase in receivables or a rise in capitalised development costs?
  • Are important risks described specifically, or only in broad boilerplate language?
  • Do the notes reveal that one customer, distributor, supplier or jurisdiction is unusually important?
  • Does the auditor identify a material uncertainty, qualification or significant accounting judgement?

Do not treat the latest announcement as a complete update. A positive contract announcement may not disclose implementation costs, payment timing or termination rights. Read it with the annual report and the next financial statement.

Check whether growth is becoming a financially durable business

Revenue growth, profit and operating cash flow answer different questions. Revenue indicates sales recognised under accounting rules. Profit reflects revenue after expenses and accounting adjustments. Operating cash flow shows whether ordinary operations are producing cash after working-capital movements. A technology company can report rapid revenue growth while consuming cash because customers pay slowly, development costs are high or the company is subsidising growth.

Area What to examine Warning signs
Revenue Year-on-year growth, organic versus acquired growth, recurring versus one-off revenue, customer and geographic mix Growth dependent on one contract, acquisitions or changes in accounting presentation
Profitability Gross margin, operating expenses, statutory profit and the bridge to any adjusted measure Persistent losses, falling margins, or adjustments that remove recurring costs
Operating cash flow Cash generated from operations and the relationship between cash flow and reported profit Profit without cash, growing receivables, or repeated cash consumption
Balance sheet Cash, borrowings, lease liabilities, debt maturities and working-capital needs Short-dated debt, covenant pressure or a cash balance that covers only a short period of spending
Funding History of placements, entitlement offers, convertibles and option exercises Frequent emergency capital raisings or dilution used to fund ordinary operating costs
Dividends Whether dividends are funded by recurring free cash flow and management’s stated policy Borrowing or issuing shares to maintain a dividend, or a policy that is not supported by cash

Use a cash runway calculation carefully

If a company is loss-making, estimate how long its reported cash could fund operations by comparing cash on hand with recent operating cash outflow. Treat the result as an indication, not a forecast: working capital, capital expenditure, acquisitions, debt repayments and a change in growth can alter the calculation quickly. A business that needs new equity before it reaches break-even creates dilution risk as well as financing risk.

Examine debt and interest burden

List each borrowing, its interest rate or pricing mechanism, maturity date, security and covenant. A low headline debt figure can still be risky if repayment is due soon or interest costs rise with rates. Conversely, a company with borrowings may be resilient if it produces reliable cash and has ample headroom. Judge debt against cash generation and repayment dates rather than against a generic “safe” ratio.

Distinguish accounting progress from economic progress

Capitalised development expenditure, share-based compensation, acquisitions and customer incentives can affect reported profit and cash differently. Read the notes to determine which costs are recurring and which are genuinely one-off. If management highlights an adjusted result, calculate how much of the adjustment occurs every year. A recurring expense does not become economically irrelevant merely because it is excluded from an adjusted measure.

Assess competitive durability and disruption risk

A good product can still be a weak investment if competitors can copy it, customers can switch easily or suppliers capture most of the economics. Investigate the company’s position using its disclosures, customer evidence and credible industry information rather than assuming that a broad technology trend benefits every participant.

Customer concentration

Find out whether a small number of customers generate a large share of revenue or receivables. Concentration can provide efficient sales and predictable volume, but losing one account may materially reduce revenue. Check contract duration, renewal terms, termination rights and whether the customer is buying a pilot, a single product or a company-wide deployment.

Pricing power and switching costs

Ask whether the company can raise prices without losing customers, and what a customer must do to change supplier. Data migration, regulatory approvals, integration work and staff training can create switching costs, but a low-cost or open-standard product may have little protection. Compare gross margin and retention trends over time for evidence that the proposed advantage is real.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Product and supplier dependence

Map the products that generate revenue and the suppliers that make delivery possible. Dependence on one product, cloud provider, chipmaker, data source, distributor or licence can expose the company to price increases, shortages or termination. Read disclosures about intellectual-property ownership, patent disputes, open-source obligations, cybersecurity incidents and service-level commitments.

Technology disruption

Technology can make an issuer’s own product more valuable, but it can also make that product obsolete. Consider whether a new model, platform, regulation or standard could reduce demand, compress prices or increase costs. ASX Investor Update has identified disruption as a persistent technology-investing risk. The relevant question is not whether disruption exists; it is whether this company has the cash, talent and customer relationships to adapt.

Work out what the current share price assumes

Valuation is the bridge between a good company and a good investment. Even a business with strong products and fast growth can be overpriced if the market already assumes years of exceptional execution. Conversely, a company with modest growth may be attractive at a price that reflects its limitations. There is no universal technology-company multiple that can settle the question without company-specific analysis.

Connect valuation to evidence

Use a consistent set of measures suited to the business: market capitalisation and enterprise value, revenue growth, gross margin, operating profit, operating cash flow and, where meaningful, free cash flow. For an early-stage company, revenue or customer metrics may be the only available indicators, but the valuation still needs a credible path to profitability and cash generation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compare the share price with scenarios rather than a single precise target:

  • Meets expectations: growth, margins and cash use develop broadly as management has indicated.
  • Falls short: growth slows, a major customer leaves, margins contract or funding arrives later than planned.
  • Exceeds expectations: the company wins customers faster, improves margins and reaches sustainable cash generation sooner.

Ask what level of growth and profitability is already embedded in the price. If the valuation requires continuous “beat and raise” results, a merely satisfactory update can cause a sharp fall even when the business remains viable. Avoid presenting historic share-price performance as a forecast.

Do not confuse market size with shareholder returns

A large addressable market can attract competitors and require substantial spending to win share. Estimate how much of the market the company would need, at what margin and with what sales costs. Then consider dilution: if expansion requires repeated equity issues, the company may grow while each existing share represents a smaller economic interest.

Identify the ways you can lose money

Shares can fall substantially even when a company continues trading. A disappointing result, failed product launch, regulatory change, cyber incident, funding requirement or loss of a major customer can reduce the market’s estimate of future cash flows. Small technology companies can also be less liquid, making it harder to sell at a price close to the quoted market price.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Company failure and shareholder ranking

If an issuer becomes insolvent, creditors and other higher-ranking claims are paid before ordinary shareholders. After asset sales and administrative costs, shareholders may receive only a fraction of their investment or nothing. A strong technology idea does not change that legal priority.

Liquidity and trading conditions

Check average trading activity, bid–ask spreads, recent trading halts and the proportion of shares held by founders, directors or other concentrated holders. A quoted price is not a guarantee that a large order can be executed at that price. Use limit orders where appropriate and understand that thin trading can magnify both rises and falls.

Governance and execution

Read directors’ experience, related-party transactions, remuneration incentives and the record of meeting stated milestones. Consider whether incentives reward revenue growth, cash generation, share issuance or short-term share-price movement. A technically capable team can still destroy value through poor capital allocation or weak controls.

Decide whether the share fits your portfolio

Suitability depends on your time horizon, risk tolerance, existing holdings and need for income or liquidity. Moneysmart’s share-research guidance emphasises considering these personal factors and diversifying across companies, sectors, countries and asset types.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check concentration before adding a technology share

Calculate your exposure to technology, small companies, a particular country, currency, business model or economic driver. Two different companies may rise and fall together if both depend on enterprise software spending, advertising budgets or venture funding. A new holding can increase concentration even when its ticker and product look different from your existing investments.

Match risk with time horizon

Money needed in the near term is poorly suited to a volatile share whose price may be depressed when you need to sell. A longer horizon allows more time for a business plan to develop, but it does not remove insolvency, dilution or permanent-loss risk. Decide in advance what evidence would make you reduce or exit the position; do not rely on a hope that the price will return to your purchase level.

Size the position for the downside

Position size should reflect the possibility of a large loss, not only the upside in your optimistic case. Consider how a 50% or larger decline would affect your finances and behaviour. If that loss would force you to sell other investments or abandon your plan, the position may be too large for your circumstances.

Compare two ASX technology shares consistently

When choosing between companies, use the same questions and measurement dates. A fast-growing loss-maker should not be compared with a mature dividend payer using only a price-to-earnings ratio. The table below provides a practical comparison worksheet; fill each cell from the relevant filings and label figures that are not disclosed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Comparison area Company A Company B What the comparison tells you
Product and paying customer Record the exact product and customer type Record the exact product and customer type Whether the businesses face similar demand and sales cycles

Revenue growth Use the same reporting period and currency Use the same reporting period and currency Whether growth is organic, acquired or concentrated
Profitability Statutory result plus clearly defined adjustments Statutory result plus clearly defined adjustments Whether growth is translating into operating leverage

Debt and funding need Borrowings, maturities, covenants and recent raisings Borrowings, maturities, covenants and recent raisings Refinancing, interest and dilution risk

Valuation Market value relative to evidence and scenarios Market value relative to evidence and scenarios How much optimism the share price requires
Liquidity and portfolio effect Trading activity and overlap with existing holdings Trading activity and overlap with existing holdings Practical ability to trade and diversify

Do not force a winner when the evidence is not comparable. Different reporting currencies, fiscal years, acquisition histories and accounting policies can make headline ratios misleading. Write down the reasons for choosing one company, the facts that would disprove your thesis and the date when you will review the evidence.

Use broker research and AI as aids, not authorities

Broker reports can provide an additional perspective on industry structure, assumptions and valuation methods. They do not replace company filings, and their availability, methodology and potential conflicts vary. Do not assume that a report is independent merely because it is detailed or distributed through a familiar platform. Check the provider, date, assumptions and disclosures.

The ASX Equity Research Scheme covers selected under-covered small-cap companies and publishes eligibility criteria and provider information. Treat any report produced under such a scheme as supplementary analysis: verify every material figure and statement against the issuer’s original announcements and financial statements.

AI tools can help locate terms in a long annual report or create a first-pass summary, but they can misread accounting periods, confuse guidance with results or invent a conclusion that is not in the source. When using AI:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Upload or reference the original document and note its reporting date.
  2. Ask for page or note references for each factual claim.
  3. Check the cited passage yourself, including definitions and footnotes.
  4. Recalculate important figures from the statements rather than accepting generated arithmetic.
  5. Do not use an AI-generated forecast as a substitute for your own assumptions and risk decision.

ASX Investor Update has cautioned that AI investment outputs can be inaccurate and require scrutiny. The more consequential the decision, the more important the primary-source check.

A repeatable pre-purchase checklist

Complete this checklist before placing an order. If an answer is “unknown”, record it as an unresolved risk rather than filling the gap with a favourable assumption.

  • I can explain what the company sells, who pays and how revenue is recognised.
  • I have read the latest annual report, latest results and material ASX announcements since those reports.
  • I understand revenue growth, profit, operating cash flow, debt, maturities and recent funding.
  • I know whether customers, products, suppliers or geographies are concentrated.
  • I have considered competition, pricing power, switching costs and technology disruption.
  • I can describe what the current valuation assumes under a realistic case, not only an optimistic case.
  • I have considered liquidity, insolvency, dilution and the possibility of a permanent loss.
  • The position size and time horizon fit my finances, risk tolerance and existing diversification.
  • Any broker or AI analysis has been checked against the original company disclosure.
  • I have written down what would make me change my view and when I will review the position.

What a sound decision looks like

A defensible decision does not require certainty or a prediction of the next share-price move. It requires a traceable chain from business activity to financial evidence, from evidence to valuation, and from valuation to a position that your portfolio can withstand. If the company’s product is difficult to explain, its cash needs are unclear, its valuation depends on perfect execution or its risks would leave you unable to sleep, passing is a valid outcome. You can reassess when new disclosures provide better evidence.
