How to Apply for VA Disability Compensation and Track Your Claim

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To apply for VA disability compensation, file online through VA’s disability-claim service or submit VA Form 21-526EZ by mail, in person, or fax. If you need time to collect evidence, submit an intent to file with VA Form 21-0966 (or start an eligible online application with a verified account) and finish the claim within one year. After filing, use VA’s claim-status tool, answer evidence requests, submit supporting records, and attend any scheduled compensation and pension examination.

How do I apply for VA disability compensation?

VA accepts disability-compensation claims through several channels. Choose the route you can document reliably and use the same route for follow-up whenever possible.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Filing route What to use Important consideration
Online VA’s online disability-claim service Starting certain disability applications with a verified account automatically notifies VA of your intent to file.
Mail VA Form 21-526EZ Use the current mailing address shown on VA’s filing page; addresses can change.
In person VA regional office Keep a dated copy of everything you hand in and ask how submission is recorded.
Fax VA Form 21-526EZ and supporting documents Retain the fax confirmation and the complete transmission.
Accredited representative An accredited attorney, claims agent, or Veterans Service Organization representative Verify the person’s accreditation through VA’s official resources before sharing personal information.

Filing online

  1. Sign in with a verified VA account. Use the account type and identity verification that VA accepts for online benefits applications.
  2. Select the disability-compensation application. Enter each condition you are claiming and provide the service, medical, and contact information requested.
  3. Upload available evidence. Add relevant service records, federal records, private medical records, test results, clinician reports, and statements from people with direct knowledge.
  4. Review before submitting. Check names, dates, service details, claimed conditions, and attachments. Save a copy or confirmation number.
  5. Monitor the claim online. The status tool can show progress, some evidence, and requests for more information.

Starting certain disability forms online with a verified account also establishes notice of intent to file. That can matter if you need time to gather records, but it does not replace submitting the completed compensation application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Filing on paper

  1. Complete the current version of VA Form 21-526EZ, the paper application for disability compensation.
  2. Attach the evidence you already have, clearly identifying which condition each document supports.
  3. Sign and date the form. Make a complete copy of the form and every attachment.
  4. Send it using the current mailing address on VA’s filing page, deliver it to a regional office, or fax it as VA permits.
  5. Keep proof of delivery, a fax confirmation, or a dated receipt. The online status tool may not display documents submitted through these methods.

Should I submit an intent to file?

An intent to file can preserve a potential earlier effective date while you gather information. For a paper filing, use VA Form 21-0966. VA describes the intent as notice that you plan to submit a claim; it is not the completed disability-compensation application.

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs states in Your intent to file a VA claim: “After you notify us of your intent to file, you have 1 year to complete and file your claim.” Treat the one-year period as a deadline: submit the full claim before it expires rather than assuming the intent remains open indefinitely.

When an intent is useful

  • You know you may claim disability compensation but are still obtaining medical records or statements.
  • You need time to describe several conditions accurately.
  • You want to establish an earlier potential effective date while completing the application.

Rules that commonly cause confusion

  • Only one active intent to file is allowed at a time.
  • An intent for one benefit type may not cover a different benefit type; a separate intent may be needed.
  • An intent does not start payment or decide eligibility. VA still requires the completed claim and supporting evidence.
  • For eligible online applications, beginning the form with a verified account can notify VA automatically, so a separate paper 21-0966 may not be necessary for that application.

If you are ready to file the complete application, submit it rather than filing an intent solely as an extra step. If you are not ready, submit the intent promptly and record the date and confirmation.

What evidence do I need for a VA disability claim?

Organize evidence around the condition you claim, when it began or worsened, your service, and its current effects. VA may consider service and other federal records, private medical records, test results, clinician reports, and statements from people who directly observed the condition or its onset.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Core evidence categories

  • Service records: documents that identify relevant duty, event, injury, exposure, or treatment.
  • Federal records: VA or other government medical records and records VA can request from federal sources.
  • Private medical records: treatment notes, diagnostic reports, prescriptions, and specialist records from non-federal providers.
  • Test results: imaging, laboratory results, or other objective testing tied to the claimed condition.
  • Clinician reports: professional descriptions of diagnosis, symptoms, treatment, and functional effects.
  • Lay statements: dated, specific accounts from you or people with direct knowledge of the condition, its onset, or changes over time.

Explain what each document proves. A short index naming the condition, date, provider, and relevance makes a large submission easier to review. Do not assume VA has received a record merely because another agency or provider created it; retain proof that you submitted or authorized the record.

Standard claim versus fully developed claim

Approach What you provide How evidence gathering works
Standard claim The completed application and the supporting evidence you have VA takes more responsibility for gathering evidence it identifies as necessary.
Fully developed claim The completed application and all available supporting evidence submitted up front You take responsibility for providing the available evidence; VA may still seek records or an examination when needed.

Neither approach guarantees a particular decision time. Choose the approach that lets you submit accurate, complete information without withholding records that could help explain the claim.

Uploading and submitting evidence after filing

For an initial claim, VA allows evidence uploads for up to one year after it receives the claim. VA may decide sooner if it lacks evidence or the information needed to obtain it after 30 days, so do not treat the one-year upload window as permission to delay a response to a specific request.

Upload readable files with descriptive names and keep the original documents. If you send evidence by mail, fax, or in person, preserve the delivery record because those submissions may not appear in the online claim file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What happens after I submit the claim?

VA reviews the application, identifies evidence it needs, and may ask you for more information. It may also schedule a compensation and pension claim examination. Attend every scheduled exam and follow the notice instructions; VA says it may need an exam to decide the claim.

If VA asks for more information

  1. Read the request carefully and note the response deadline.
  2. Determine whether VA wants a form, a release, a record, a clarification, or a personal statement.
  3. Send the requested material through the method specified in the notice.
  4. Keep a copy, the submission date, and any confirmation.
  5. Check the status tool for the request, while remembering that offline submissions may not be displayed there.

If new evidence arrives after the claim has moved beyond evidence gathering, VA says the claim can return to that step for review. That can change the visible status and extend processing while the new material is considered.

Preparing for a claim examination

  • Attend at the date, time, and location in the appointment notice.
  • Describe symptoms, onset, frequency, treatment, and functional effects accurately; do not minimize or exaggerate.
  • Bring a concise symptom timeline and a list of treatment or medications if that helps you answer consistently.
  • Tell the examiner about relevant changes since you filed.
  • If you cannot attend, follow the notice instructions promptly to request a change rather than simply missing the appointment.

An examination is part of VA’s evidence-gathering process; it is not a substitute for submitting records you already possess.

How do I check my VA disability claim status?

Sign in to VA’s claim-status tool to see where the claim is in the process. The tool can display progress, some evidence associated with an online-filed claim, and requests for additional information. Use it together with your own submission log, not as the sole record of the case.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What the tool can show

  • The current stage or status of the claim.
  • Evidence uploaded through the online claim process.
  • Some VA evidence requests and actions.
  • Some decision letters after VA has completed the claim.

What the tool cannot reliably show

  • Documents you submitted in person, by mail, or by fax may not appear.
  • It does not provide an exact decision date.
  • A status display is not proof that an offline document was lost; use your receipt, fax confirmation, or other delivery evidence and contact VA if the record needs clarification.

When the status reads complete, VA’s FAQ says the decision letter has been mailed. VA’s stated estimate for postal delivery is 7 to 10 business days. Watch for the letter even if the online display has not changed further.

How long does a VA disability claim take?

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs reported an average of 68.2 days to complete disability-related claims in September 2026. That is a historical average, not a promise or an individualized estimate. VA says processing time depends on the claim type, complexity, number of disabilities, and availability of evidence.

Your case may move at a different pace when VA must obtain federal or private records, schedule an examination, clarify several conditions, or review evidence submitted late in the process. The status tool cannot predict the exact decision date, so use requests and appointment notices as the practical signals for what you need to do next.

Can I get help filing a VA disability claim?

VA lists accredited attorneys, claims agents, and Veterans Service Organization representatives as possible sources of assistance. An accredited representative can help identify evidence, complete forms, submit documents, and explain review options. Accreditation is not the same as a guarantee of a favorable decision, and VA’s listing does not mean it endorses a paid service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Use VA’s official accreditation resources to verify the person or organization.
  2. Ask what services are included and whether any fee applies before signing an agreement.
  3. Keep your own copies of every form, statement, medical record, and submission confirmation.
  4. Make sure the representative has your current mailing address, phone number, and email.

You can file on your own, with a Veterans Service Organization representative, or with another accredited professional. The best choice depends on the complexity of your evidence and how much administrative help you need.

What if VA denies or rates the claim differently than expected?

Read the decision letter before choosing a review option. VA describes several review paths, and the appropriate one depends on the specific decision and the evidence available. A Supplemental Claim is intended for a case with new and relevant evidence that VA did not previously consider.

Match the review route to the reason for the decision. Gather the letter, identify which condition or issue is disputed, and collect evidence that addresses that issue. Keep every deadline in the letter; an intent to file for a new claim does not automatically replace the deadline or preserve every right connected with a review of the decision.

A practical filing and tracking checklist

  • Choose online, mail, in-person, fax, or an accredited representative.
  • If you need time, submit VA Form 21-0966 and calendar the one-year completion deadline.
  • For a paper application, complete VA Form 21-526EZ.
  • List each claimed condition clearly and explain relevant onset, service events, treatment, and current effects.
  • Collect service and federal records, private medical records, test results, clinician reports, and direct-observation statements.
  • Submit available evidence with the claim and upload additional initial-claim evidence within the allowed period.
  • Save a complete copy and proof of every submission.
  • Sign in to the claim-status tool after filing and review requests promptly.
  • Attend any compensation and pension examination.
  • Use the current VA contact information if the status is unclear or a request cannot be completed.
  • When the claim is complete, look for the mailed decision letter, allowing VA’s stated 7-to-10-business-day postal estimate.
  • If the decision is unfavorable, read the letter and select the review option that fits the evidence and issue.

Bottom line for applicants

File the complete application as soon as your evidence is ready; if it is not ready, protect a potential earlier effective date with an intent to file and finish within one year. Keep an independent record of every document, because the online status tool does not capture all paper, fax, or in-person submissions. Respond to VA requests, attend examinations, and treat the 68.2-day September 2026 average as context rather than a deadline for your individual claim.
