If an Ohio layoff leaves you without work, file an unemployment claim immediately at unemployment.ohio.gov using an OHID account, or call 1-877-644-6562. Have your identity, employer history, separation details and income records ready. After the initial application, you must certify every claimed week, report gross wages and other payments, complete required work-search activities and answer Ohio Department of Job & Family Services (ODJFS) notices. A layoff is usually an involuntary separation, but it does not by itself guarantee approval.
File during your first week of unemployment
ODJFS advises workers to apply as soon as they become unemployed. Your application is effective for the week in which you file; Ohio does not pay benefits for weeks before the application date. Waiting can therefore permanently remove an otherwise payable week.

Apply online through unemployment.ohio.gov by selecting the worker application/login. If online filing is not practical, call 1-877-644-6562. Telephone assistance is available through TTY 711 or 1-800-750-0750. Keep the account credentials or filing information you use because you will need them for weekly certifications, notices and any appeal.

A practical first-week timeline
On your last day worked, save the layoff notice, final pay information and any message describing a recall date. During the first week without work, open the claim even if you are waiting for severance details or an employer response. After that week ends, submit its certification and continue certifying each Sunday-through-Saturday week. This sequence prevents a common mistake: assuming that filing the initial form automatically claims every later week.

What a layoff does—and does not—establish
A position elimination or reduction in force is generally an involuntary separation, unlike quitting without good cause or being discharged for misconduct. ODJFS still examines the complete claim. Approval depends on covered wages and weeks, whether you can and are available for suitable work, registration and work-search compliance, weekly certifications, and the facts in your employer’s response.
An employer’s description of the separation does not replace your responsibility to give accurate information. If the employer later reports different dates, a temporary recall or a payment, ODJFS may ask you for clarification. Respond through the portal or by the method on the notice, and keep copies of what you submit.
2026 monetary requirements
For an application filed in 2026, ODJFS lists a minimum of 20 weeks worked and a $352 average weekly wage. The average is calculated by dividing wages in the applicable base period by the number of base-period weeks worked. Your monetary determination, not a general estimate, controls whether your wage record meets the requirement and what your weekly amount can be.
| Requirement or figure | What it means |
|---|---|
| 20 weeks | Minimum weeks worked listed by ODJFS for a 2026 application. |
| $352 | Minimum average weekly wage listed by ODJFS for a 2026 application, calculated from base-period wages and weeks. |
| Covered employment | Wages must come from employment covered by Ohio’s unemployment program; ODJFS determines which wages count. |
| Ability and availability | You generally must be physically able and available to accept suitable work while claiming a week. |
| Registration and work search | You must complete required registration, work-search activities and weekly certifications unless ODJFS grants an applicable exception. |
Information to gather before opening the application
Collect the following before you begin. Accurate information reduces follow-up questions and helps you identify errors when ODJFS issues its monetary determination.
- Your Social Security number.
- Ohio driver’s license number or state identification number, if you have one.
- Legal name, mailing address, telephone number and email address.
- Every employer’s name, address and contact information for the period ODJFS asks about.
- Dates you worked for each employer, including your last day worked.
- A clear description of why the job ended, such as a layoff or position elimination.
- Gross wage information and the weeks in which you received vacation pay, holiday pay, bonuses, severance, pension payments or other income.
- Documents that can support your dates, wages or separation, such as pay statements, layoff notices and employer correspondence.
Do not estimate dates or wages when you can verify them. If the employer, weeks or wages shown on the determination are wrong, use your records when requesting a correction or filing an appeal. Keep digital or paper copies in one folder so you can answer an ODJFS request without searching through old email.
How to submit the Ohio unemployment application
1. Choose online or telephone filing
Online filing is ODJFS’s encouraged option and lets you use one portal for the application, certifications, notices, document uploads, updates and appeals. Telephone filing is useful when you cannot use the site or need an agent. Compare the options before starting:
| Consideration | Online at unemployment.ohio.gov | Phone at 1-877-644-6562 |
|---|---|---|
| Speed and convenience | Complete the form when the portal is available and save information in your account. | Speak with an agent, subject to telephone service availability. |
| Technology | Requires an internet-connected device and an OHID-enabled login. | Does not require you to navigate the online form. |
| Documents | Provides the portal’s document-upload function when ODJFS requests records. | An agent can explain how ODJFS wants supporting records submitted. |
| Future claims | The same login is used for weekly certifications and notices. | You may still need online access or another telephone interaction for later tasks. |
Whichever method you use, record the filing date and confirmation information. If a call drops or the website session ends, do not submit a second claim until you verify whether the first one was accepted; duplicate claims can create confusion.
2. Create or use an OHID
OHID is Ohio’s secure account for state services. Follow the worker application/login prompts, create the account if necessary, and store the username, password and recovery information securely. Do not create duplicate claims because you lost a password; use the account-recovery options or call ODJFS.
3. Enter your identity and employer history
Provide the requested personal details, every employer and the dates worked. Use the employer’s official information from a pay statement or separation notice when possible. Include the actual last day you performed work, not merely the date you received a layoff notice.
4. Describe the separation accurately
Select or explain that the employer laid you off, eliminated the position or otherwise ended work for lack of available work. If the employer gave you a future recall date, state that information and whether the layoff is temporary. Explain any severance, vacation payout or other payment you expect, even if you have not yet received it.

5. Review and submit
Check spelling, Social Security information, employer names, dates and wage entries before submitting. Save the confirmation details. Filing creates the claim for the week submitted; it does not replace the weekly certification required after that week ends.

What happens after you file
ODJFS sends correspondence by mail or email and assigns the claim to a processing center based on the last four digits of your Social Security number. Read every notice, including both monetary and nonmonetary determinations. A monetary determination lists the wage record and potential amount; a nonmonetary determination addresses an eligibility issue such as the separation, availability or reported income.
Current ODJFS guidance says an application decision takes about three weeks. That is a processing estimate, not a promise of approval or a guaranteed payment date. Continue meeting weekly requirements while the claim is pending. A request for information from ODJFS or an employer can extend processing if you do not respond.
What to do while waiting
Check your account, email and physical mail regularly. File each weekly certification on time, complete the required work search, report any income and answer requests by the stated deadline. Waiting for a determination is not a reason to pause these steps. If you later win an appeal, ODJFS generally can consider only weeks that you actually claimed.
Check the determination for errors
Compare the employers, covered weeks and wages on the monetary determination with your pay records. Check that the separation description reflects a layoff rather than a resignation or discharge. Keep copies of the application, confirmation page, notices, pay statements, layoff communications and any response you send.

If ODJFS denies benefits or lists incorrect facts, use the claim portal’s appeal function or follow the instructions on the determination. Appeal promptly within the deadline stated on the notice. Explain the specific error, attach relevant records and continue filing weekly certifications while the appeal is pending; otherwise, a later favorable decision may not cover weeks you failed to claim.
Certify every week to keep a claim payable
The initial application alone does not produce continuing payments. You must file a weekly certification for each week you want considered, even while ODJFS is still deciding the claim.
Know the claim-week calendar
An Ohio claim week runs Sunday through Saturday. You certify after the week ends. ODJFS allows filing by the end of the third calendar week after the claimed week. If you miss that window, explain circumstances beyond your control and follow the portal’s instructions; late filing is not automatically accepted.
Use a calendar reminder for the first certification and every later week. Before submitting, review the week’s dates, work performed, gross earnings and answers about availability. Save the confirmation number or screenshot after submission.
Report income in the week it applies
Report gross—not take-home—wages and other gross income for the week to which the payment relates. Include regular pay, vacation pay, holiday pay, bonuses and severance. Employer-allocated severance can reduce benefits for the specific weeks to which the employer allocates it, so use the allocation shown by the employer or on your paperwork rather than spreading it yourself.

Answer each certification question truthfully about work, earnings, availability and required activities. Keep pay records and confirmation numbers in case ODJFS later asks you to verify an answer. If a payment arrives after you certify, report it according to the week or allocation it covers rather than silently waiting for the next notice.
Complete work-search and OhioMeansJobs requirements
Most claimants must complete two work-search activities each week and keep a record of what they did, when they did it and how to verify it. Activities can include qualifying employer contacts or other actions ODJFS recognizes; follow the instructions attached to your claim rather than assuming an activity counts.
ODJFS may also require an OhioMeansJobs account, a resume and a Career Profile. Complete those items by the deadlines in your New Claim Instruction Sheet. Save screenshots, submission confirmations, employer messages and other records. If you are selected for a review, these records show that you met the weekly requirement.
Do not claim an activity you did not complete. A work-search log should identify the date, employer or activity, position or purpose and any confirmation available. Keep it with your weekly certification records for the duration of the claim.
Temporary layoff with a reported recall
Ohio law allows ODJFS to waive active work search when the employer reports a temporary layoff and an expected return within no more than 45 days. The waiver is tied to the employer’s report and expected recall; it is not a general exemption. You must still be able and available for work, continue filing certifications and follow any other instruction. If the recall does not occur as specified, the waiver can end and active-search duties may apply.
How much could you receive in 2026?
For 2026, ODJFS says most eligible people receive between $176 and $842 per week, for up to 26 weeks in one benefit year. These are published ranges and duration limits, not a personal quote. Your monetary determination calculates the amount from your wage record, and eligibility issues can delay, reduce or prevent payment.
| 2026 figure | Qualification |
|---|---|
| $176–$842 per week | Range ODJFS says most eligible people receive; the individual determination controls. |
| Up to 26 weeks | Maximum stated by ODJFS for one benefit year, subject to continued eligibility and available balance. |
| About three weeks | Current ODJFS estimate for deciding an application; processing can vary by claim and requested information. |
Continue reporting all gross payments even when you expect the weekly benefit to be reduced to zero for a particular week. Failing to report income can create an overpayment or a separate eligibility problem.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCommon problems and the right response
You filed after the layoff week
File immediately once you realize you are unemployed. The claim normally starts with the filing week, so explain any delay through the portal or to an agent, but do not assume earlier weeks can be added.
Your wage record is missing an employer
Compare the determination with pay statements and tax records. Submit the correction or appeal described in the notice and include employer names, dates, gross wages and supporting documents.
You received severance or paid time off
Report the gross amount and the applicable week or allocation. Do not wait until the money is spent or until ODJFS asks; the payment can affect the weeks for which you claim benefits.
