How to Apply for Unemployment Benefits After Losing a Job in Michigan (2026 Guide)

If you lost work in Michigan, file an unemployment claim through the Michigan Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA) in MiWAM as soon as you become unemployed or underemployed. Have your identity, wage and separation information ready; register for work through MiTalent.org and Michigan Works!; certify on the schedule UIA assigns; and complete at least three unique work-search activities for every week you claim. The three-activity requirement applies to weeks beginning July 19, 2026.

Online filing is available 24 hours a day through Michigan.gov/UIA. Telephone applications are available at 1-866-500-0017, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. UIA says a first payment often arrives about three weeks after filing, but an individual claim can take longer when wage, identity or separation questions require review.

What to do first after a Michigan job loss

  1. File the claim promptly. The date you submit establishes the claim’s starting point under UIA rules; do not wait until you have exhausted savings or received every document from an employer.
  2. Complete work registration. Create a job-seeker account at MiTalent.org, then complete the Michigan Works! in-person or virtual registration and verification step unless UIA tells you that it is not required for your claim.
  3. Watch MiWAM. Your account will show the Monetary Determination, requests for information, certification dates and other alerts.
  4. Certify every two weeks until UIA changes your schedule. Use MiWAM or the MARVIN telephone system exactly as instructed, and never certify twice for the same weeks.
  5. Search for work every week you claim. Beginning with weeks that start July 19, 2026, Michigan requires three unique work-search activities per week. Keep a contemporaneous record and report the activities as UIA directs.

UIA Director Jason Palmer described the changes as “the most significant updates to Michigan’s unemployment system in years — and every worker needs to understand what’s changing.” Rules and system labels can change, so the notices in your MiWAM account control your individual case.

Information and documents you need before filing

Gather the following before opening the application. Missing details can lead to follow-up requests and delay a determination.

  • Your driver license or Michigan state identification number.
  • Your Social Security number. If you are not a U.S. citizen, have your USCIS number and the expiration date of your work authorization.
  • For every employer during the last 18 months: legal name, mailing address, first day worked, last day worked, pay rate, pay frequency and the reason work ended.
  • Bank routing and account numbers if you want direct deposit. UIA cannot use online-only digital bank accounts for this purpose, so use an eligible traditional bank or another payment method offered in your account.
  • Access to the email address, telephone number and mailing address you will monitor after filing. UIA may send a deadline-sensitive request through MiWAM or another contact method.

Use the employer’s actual business name and address rather than a supervisor’s name. If a staffing agency, temporary-help firm or payroll company employed you, identify that employer and provide the assignment details UIA requests.

How to file a Michigan unemployment claim

Option 1: Online through MiWAM

  1. Go to Michigan.gov/UIA and choose the unemployment application link.
  2. Sign in to MiLogin. If you do not have a MiLogin account, create one using the on-screen identity and contact prompts.
  3. Open MiWAM and select the option to file a new unemployment claim.
  4. Enter your personal identity information, work authorization information when applicable, and the complete 18-month employer history.
  5. Answer the separation questions accurately. State whether you were laid off, fired, or left voluntarily and explain the facts in plain language.
  6. Choose a payment method. If you select direct deposit, enter a supported bank account rather than an online-only digital account.
  7. Review every date, wage figure and employer entry before submitting. Save or print the confirmation number and retain a copy of your answers.

Online filing is available 24/7. MiWAM is also where you will later find determinations, alerts, certification instructions and requests for documents.

Option 2: Telephone filing

Call 1-866-500-0017 Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Have the same identity, employer and separation information ready. Telephone filing is useful when you cannot complete the web application, but you will still need to monitor MiWAM or other UIA communications for notices and follow-up tasks.

Filing method Access Account requirement Best use
MiWAM online 24 hours a day, seven days a week MiLogin and MiWAM Most convenient for entering a detailed work history, uploading information and checking notices
UIA telephone application Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Telephone identity verification; continue monitoring your UIA account afterward When online filing is inaccessible or you need telephone assistance

Neither filing route guarantees approval. UIA determines eligibility from reported wages, separation facts and the other requirements that apply to your claim.

Register for work before your first certification

After filing, create a job-seeker account at MiTalent.org. Then complete the required Michigan Works! registration and verification appointment, either in person or virtually, unless UIA specifically instructs you otherwise. Complete this step before your first certification; waiting can interrupt payment processing.

Keep confirmation of the registration and any appointment or orientation. If Michigan Works! or UIA gives you a different deadline or exemption, follow that written instruction and retain it with your claim records.

Who is eligible for Michigan unemployment?

UIA evaluates the entire claim, not just the fact that an employer ended your job. In general, you must be unemployed or underemployed, able and available for suitable full-time work, actively seeking work and properly registered as required.

Laid off or work reduced

A layoff, plant closure, lack of work or a substantial reduction in hours can support a claim when the wage and other requirements are met. If you continue working part time, you may receive a partial payment, but you must report your gross earnings for the calendar week in which you performed the work—not the week the employer pays you.

Fired or discharged

You may file after being fired, but filing is not a finding that you qualify. UIA can ask you and the employer why the separation occurred and whether it involved misconduct or another disqualifying circumstance. Give a complete, factual account and answer every request by its stated deadline.

Quit voluntarily

A voluntary quit receives an individual review. Explain the reason, the steps you took before leaving and any documentation you have. A claimant who left because of domestic violence or household safety may qualify under Michigan law effective July 17, 2026, if all other requirements are satisfied.

Michigan’s 2026 wage test and benefit amount

Standard base-period qualification

For 2026 benefit years, the standard wage test generally requires:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • At least $5,328 in one quarter.
  • Wages in at least two quarters.
  • Total base-period wages of at least 1.5 times the wages in your highest quarter.

If the standard calculation does not qualify you, UIA may examine an alternate base period or an alternate earnings qualifier. The applicable completed quarters depend on when you file and which wages are in UIA’s records; do not assume that a recent paycheck automatically belongs in the standard base period.

Weekly benefit rate

For 2026 claims, the weekly benefit rate is generally 4.1% of wages in your highest base-period quarter, capped at $530 per week. For example, a highest quarter with $10,000 in wages produces a mathematical rate of $410 before any UIA determination or other adjustment. Your Monetary Determination in MiWAM is the controlling figure.

How many weeks can be paid

Eligible duration is generally 14 to 26 weeks, determined by your wage history. The number of payable weeks is separate from your weekly rate: a higher quarterly wage can affect the rate, while the wage record also determines how long benefits may last.

2026 measure Amount or rule Qualification
Minimum qualifying quarter $5,328 Standard base-period test for 2026 benefit years
Weekly rate formula 4.1% of highest base-period quarter Subject to UIA’s determination
Maximum weekly rate $530 2026 claims
Potential duration 14-26 weeks Varies with wage history

Certifying for payment and reporting part-time work

UIA normally requires certification every two weeks. Your MiWAM account or MARVIN instructions identify the exact weeks and method assigned to you. Certify once for each requested period; duplicate certifications can create a payment or overpayment problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Check the certification date in MiWAM or the MARVIN instructions.
  2. Answer whether you were able and available for suitable full-time work and whether you completed the required work searches.
  3. Report any work performed and the gross amount earned during each calendar week. Use the week you performed the work, even if the paycheck arrived later.
  4. Review the certification before submitting and save the confirmation.

Underemployment can result in a partial payment rather than a zero payment, but the amount depends on the wages and UIA’s calculation. Never omit part-time earnings because you expect them to reduce the benefit.

The three-work-search rule beginning July 19, 2026

For every week claimed that begins on or after July 19, 2026, complete and document at least three unique work-search activities. Missing the report can stop payment. “Unique” means three separate activities, not one activity entered three times.

How to keep a usable record

  • Record the calendar date, the activity, the employer or organization involved and the position or service related to the search.
  • Keep confirmation emails, application receipts, interview invitations, event registrations or other evidence when available.
  • Use the work-search categories and reporting fields shown in your MiWAM certification. If UIA or Michigan Works! gives you a specific activity list, follow that list rather than relying on a generic checklist.
  • Enter activities for the week in which they occurred, and keep the record until your claim and any audit are complete.

Michigan Works! can help with the required registration and employment services, but the public registration does not replace the weekly three-activity requirement unless UIA expressly says an exception applies to you.

When Michigan unemployment pays

UIA says the first payment is often about three weeks after filing. That is an estimate, not a guarantee. Payment can take longer if UIA must verify identity, reconstruct wages, contact an employer about the separation, resolve a registration issue or review a missed deadline. Later payments generally follow successful certifications.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check MiWAM alerts and your payment history instead of relying on a bank notification. If UIA requests information, respond by the deadline in the notice and keep proof of submission. Update your address, telephone number and email promptly so a notice does not go to an old contact point.

Important 2026 system change: MiUI

UIA has scheduled the MiUI benefits system for launch on November 9, 2026. After launch, UIA plans for certifications and payments to become weekly rather than bi-weekly. Because the launch date, instructions and account labels are time-sensitive, read the notices in your current UIA account before assuming that your existing certification day or payment rhythm remains unchanged.

A claim already in progress may receive transition instructions. Follow the schedule displayed for your account, and do not submit an extra certification simply because you heard that the system is changing.

What to do if your claim is delayed or stopped

MiWAM shows an alert or “additional information” request

Open the alert, read the due date and submit exactly what UIA requests. Check that scans or photographs are legible and that names and dates match your application. Save the confirmation page or message after sending the response.

Your wages are missing or incorrect

Compare the Monetary Determination with your pay records and employer history. If a quarter, employer or wage amount is wrong, use the appeal or correction instructions in the determination rather than filing a second claim for the same unemployment period.

You missed a certification

Read the MiWAM or MARVIN instructions for reopening or late certification. Explain the reason promptly and continue following the next assigned certification date. Do not certify twice for an identical period.

Payment stopped after a work-search issue

Review whether each claimed week beginning July 19, 2026 had three unique activities and whether you reported them in the required field. Correct only what is true and provide records if UIA asks; never create activities after the fact.

You disagree with a determination

Use the determination’s appeal or protest instructions and deadline. State the specific wage, separation or eligibility fact you dispute and attach relevant records. Continue certifying as instructed while the issue is reviewed unless UIA tells you not to.

MiWAM versus MARVIN for certifications

Method Convenience What controls the timing Use it when
MiWAM Online access and an electronic record in the claim account The certification date and prompts displayed in MiWAM You want to review notices, enter earnings and retain an online confirmation in one place
MARVIN Telephone certification using the assigned call-in instructions The call-in day and instructions UIA assigns You prefer or need the telephone route and can answer the prompts accurately

Use only one method for a given certification period. If an instruction changes after the MiUI launch, follow the current notice rather than an older calendar.

Checklist for each week you claim

  • You were able and available for suitable full-time work.
  • You completed at least three unique work-search activities for the week beginning July 19, 2026 or later, unless UIA granted a documented exception.
  • You recorded gross earnings for work performed during that calendar week.
  • You have checked MiWAM for alerts and have answered every request by its deadline.
  • Your contact information remains current.

Answers to common Michigan filing questions

Can I apply if I was fired?

Yes, you can submit a claim. UIA will separately decide whether the reason for discharge affects eligibility, so describe the circumstances accurately and respond to any employer-separation questionnaire.

Can I apply if I still have a part-time job?

Yes, underemployment can qualify for a partial payment. Report gross earnings for the week the work was performed, not the pay-date week.

Do I have to search for work before filing?

File first, then complete the MiTalent.org and Michigan Works! registration steps before your first certification. For weeks beginning July 19, 2026, document three unique work-search activities for each week you claim.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How long will my benefits last?

Eligible duration is generally 14 to 26 weeks, based on wage history. Your Monetary Determination states the amount and weeks UIA allows for your claim.

What if I do not have a bank account for direct deposit?

Choose the payment method UIA offers in MiWAM. If you do use direct deposit, the account cannot be an online-only digital bank account.

Will benefits become weekly in 2026?

UIA has scheduled the MiUI system for November 9, 2026 and plans to move certifications and payments to a weekly schedule after launch. Check your account notice for the schedule that applies to you.
