If monsoon rain, flooding or another notified peril has damaged your insured crop, notify the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) reporting channel immediately. The correct claim path depends on whether the crop was still standing, was a localized loss on your farm, or had been harvested and left to dry. Report the loss with survey-number-wise acreage and your policy identifiers, keep the submission reference, and check the notification for your state, season, crop and insurance unit before assuming that rain damage is covered.
Start with the right PMFBY claim category
PMFBY does not treat every rain- or flood-related loss as the same type of claim. The crop stage, the peril named in the notification and the way the insurance unit is assessed determine the process. A standing-crop yield loss is generally calculated for a notified area, while a qualifying localized calamity is assessed at the individual farm. Post-harvest protection applies only to specified perils and a defined drying period.

| Situation when damage occurred | Typical PMFBY route | How assessment works | Key conditions to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crop still standing in the field; loss affects yield across the notified area | Yield-loss assessment under the applicable area-based scheme terms | Notified-area basis rather than a separate measurement of every farm | Notified crop, insurance unit, season, enrollment and premium status |
| Standing crop damaged on an isolated farm by a specified localized peril | Localized-calamity intimation and individual-farm assessment | Farm-level loss assessment | Peril must be listed for the notified area; examples in the PMFBY FAQ include hailstorm, landslide and inundation |
| Harvested crop left in “cut & spread” condition to dry in the field | Post-harvest loss intimation | Individual loss assessment under post-harvest provisions | Specified peril, crop eligibility and no more than 14 days after harvest; crop already bundled and heaped before threshing is listed as an exclusion |
The official PMFBY FAQ describes these distinctions. A state or season notification can narrow the crops, perils, insurance units and procedures, so a heavy-rain event is not automatically an individual payable claim.

For a qualifying localized calamity or post-harvest loss, the revised operational guidance requires immediate intimation within 72 hours of the event. The official wording is:
#1 Best Overall
“Immediate intimation (within 72 hours) by the insured farmer to any one as detailed in para 21.4.3.2 below.”
Use the shortest available route and do not wait for photographs, a revenue visit or a bank appointment if that would push you beyond the window. If communication fails, try another listed channel, record the time and method of each attempt, and retain screenshots, call details or acknowledgements. The guidance does not establish that every route or every portal feature is available in every locality at all times, so verify the current instruction from your insurer and local agriculture office.
Step-by-step: report the damage
- Confirm that you were insured for the affected crop. Gather the season, notified crop, village, insurance unit and the application or policy details shown on your PMFBY record. Enrollment and loss reporting are separate actions: an application does not create a claim for a farmer who was not insured for that season.
- Record the event and crop stage. Note the date and approximate time of the rain, inundation, hailstorm or other event; whether the crop was standing or harvested; and whether harvested produce was still spread in the field for drying. Do not describe a bundled or heaped crop as “cut and spread” if it was already stacked before threshing.
- Measure the affected area as accurately as you can. Prepare the field or survey numbers and the acreage affected. If only part of a plot is damaged, state the affected portion rather than the entire holding. The revised guidance asks for survey-number-wise information, which helps officials match the intimation to land and crop records.
- Choose one reporting route and submit promptly. Options listed in PMFBY operational guidance include the Crop Insurance App, the insurance company, the concerned bank, the local agriculture department or district officials, toll-free reporting channels and the National Crop Insurance Portal. The portal currently displays the Krishi Rakshak Portal & Helpline number 14447 for grievances and crop-loss reporting.
- Give the identifying details requested. Have your name, mobile number, Farmer Application Number, affected survey numbers and acreage ready. Keep the relevant Kisan Credit Card (KCC) or savings-account details available for identification and verification. Provide only information that matches your enrollment record.
- Add location and visual evidence where the channel permits it. The Crop Insurance App guidance describes post-harvest reporting with longitude/latitude and photographs. Take clear, dated images of the crop, standing water or other visible damage, and the wider field context. Photographs support the intimation; they do not by themselves establish that the peril or crop is covered.
- Save proof immediately. Keep the acknowledgement, complaint or intimation number, confirmation message, submitted form, screenshots and the date and time. If you report by telephone, note the number dialled, the call reference and the official or call-centre details provided. Back up the records outside the phone.
- Notify the local contact if the first channel does not confirm receipt. Take the saved reference to the bank, insurer or agriculture office and ask them to verify that the loss is attached to your application. Do not submit contradictory descriptions of the same event; explain any correction and keep both references.
Where to submit the intimation
| Route | What it is useful for | What to retain |
|---|---|---|
| Crop Insurance App | Digital loss reporting; the guidance identifies location coordinates and photographs for post-harvest reporting | In-app acknowledgement, reference number and uploaded-image record |
| Insurer | Direct notice to the company handling the notified crop and area | Call or ticket number, staff name or office and time of notice |
| Concerned bank | Help for farmers whose PMFBY premium or application was processed through the bank | Stamped receipt or written acknowledgement, if available |
| Local agriculture department or district officials | Local assistance when digital access or insurer contact is difficult | Diary number, receipt or the official’s written confirmation |
| Toll-free reporting channel | Telephone intimation and escalation when online submission is unavailable | Call reference, date, time and any follow-up instruction |
| National Crop Insurance Portal | Online enrollment, status checking, grievance and loss-reporting options | Portal acknowledgement, application number and screenshots |
These are the channels identified in the PMFBY Revised Operational Guidelines. Availability and local workflow can vary; use the insurer and state notification instructions that apply to your crop and season.

Organising the details before you call or submit reduces the risk of an untraceable or misclassified intimation. Use this checklist as a preparation aid, not as a universal document list: the national guidance does not prescribe one identical set of papers for every state, crop or loss category.

Photograph safely from several points without entering unstable or flooded areas. Keep the original files and do not edit dates or locations. If a crop was harvested, document that it was laid out in the field for drying and the date of harvest; this is relevant to the post-harvest conditions.
Use the official PMFBY portal without confusing its functions
The PMFBY Farmer Application and reporting portal provides several functions that look similar but have different purposes:
- Self-enrollment or application: used to apply for cover subject to the state notification, crop, season and scheme terms. It is not a substitute for reporting a later loss.
- Application-status checking: used to see whether an application or insurance record is reflected in the system.
- Crop-loss reporting: used by an insured farmer to intimate damage after an event.
- Grievance: used when you need to challenge a service issue, missing status, failed submission or other unresolved problem.
Open the portal, select the farmer-facing option that matches the task, enter the requested application or identity details, and save the generated reference before closing the session. The site currently shows 14447 as the Krishi Rakshak Portal & Helpline contact. If the portal rejects a submission, capture the error, contact the insurer or local official through another listed route and retain proof that you attempted to report within the deadline.

Your intimation starts the applicable assessment process; it does not guarantee payment. For a localized calamity, the loss is considered at the individual farm under the notified peril and terms. For a standing-crop yield loss assessed on a notified-area basis, the eventual calculation follows the area-level process rather than a simple percentage taken from one farmer’s photographs. Post-harvest claims are tested against the listed peril, crop stage and drying-period conditions.

Ask the receiving office which inspection or verification step applies in your district and how to provide additional records. The national sources do not set one universal claim-decision timetable or document list for every case. Keep your phone reachable, preserve the crop or damaged material where safety and agricultural practice allow, and cooperate with any field visit without delaying the original intimation.
Check the portal status and contact the insurer or district agriculture office using your saved reference if no acknowledgement appears. Escalate a failed or disputed service through the grievance function or 14447, while keeping the original loss description and all dates consistent.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Waiting for an official survey before notifying
Farmers sometimes wait for a revenue or agriculture inspection. That can consume the reporting window. Send the initial intimation first, then provide inspection details or improved photographs when requested.
Reporting only the village name
A village-level description may not identify the insured parcel. Include survey numbers and affected acreage, and state which portion of each plot was damaged.
Rank #4
Assuming every flood is a localized claim
Inundation can be a listed localized peril, but the crop, insurance unit, season and notification control eligibility. A widespread standing-crop yield loss may follow the notified-area route instead of an individual-farm settlement.
Claiming post-harvest cover for stacked produce
The FAQ limits post-harvest protection to specified perils affecting crops left in “cut & spread” condition to dry for up to 14 days. Crops already bundled and heaped before threshing are listed among exclusions. Describe the actual handling and dates accurately.
Using a new application to report an old loss
Enrollment and claim intimation are different transactions. Use the loss-reporting option tied to the existing insured application; do not create a duplicate application to replace a missing claim reference.
Failing to preserve proof
A successful phone call or online form is difficult to prove later without a reference. Save every acknowledgement, screenshot and call detail, and write down the time and channel used.

Sending inconsistent corrections
If you discover an error in acreage or survey number, tell the receiving office that you are correcting an earlier intimation, quote its reference and keep the revised submission. Multiple unrelated descriptions can create verification problems.

Standing crop isolated by a notified inundation
Rice is still standing when floodwater enters one insured farm. The farmer should describe the inundation, survey number and affected acreage and submit a localized-calamity intimation through an available PMFBY channel. Whether it is payable depends on the state notification and the listed peril, not on the fact that the rain was unusually heavy.
Widespread monsoon yield reduction
Rainfall reduces yields across most farms in the notified insurance unit, with no single isolated event suitable for farm-level measurement. The standing-crop loss may be handled through the notified-area yield assessment. The farmer should still confirm enrollment and follow any local instructions, but should not expect an individual photograph-based percentage to determine the final amount.

Harvested grain drying in the field
Wheat has been cut and spread in the field when cyclonic or unseasonal rain damages it. The farmer should record the harvest date, keep the crop in its actual condition for safe inspection, and report promptly under the post-harvest route. The crop must fall within the notified cover and the stated drying period; grain already bundled and heaped before threshing does not meet that listed condition.
Check these state- and season-specific items
Before relying on an individual claim, obtain the current notification for your state and season and confirm:
- the crop is notified and you were enrolled with the required premium or contribution recorded;
- the village or insurance unit is included;
- the peril is covered as a localized calamity or post-harvest event;
- the crop stage and, for post-harvest loss, the drying period meet the scheme terms;
- the insurer, bank and district contacts currently handling intimation in your area; and
- any local form, evidence or inspection instruction that supplements the national guidance.
If you do not know the insurer or insurance unit, start with the PMFBY portal status function, your bank’s crop-insurance desk or the district agriculture office. Give them your Farmer Application Number and survey details so they can locate the correct record.
