India does not have one universal old-age pension application, payment or document list. The national Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension Scheme (IGNOAPS), part of the National Social Assistance Programme (NSAP), provides a central contribution for eligible people aged 60 and above in households identified as below the poverty line (BPL). Your state or Union Territory (UT) sets the application route, checks local conditions and may add a substantial top-up. Start with the official social-welfare or pension service for the applicant’s state/UT, then verify both the national and local rules before collecting documents.
The steps below explain the national framework and show Uttarakhand as a practical example. Uttarakhand’s age, income, selection and payment rules are not nationwide rules.

First identify which old-age pension applies
Think of old-age support in India as two layers rather than a single product. IGNOAPS is the central framework. A state or UT may administer that benefit, add its own contribution, or operate a separate old-age pension with a similar name. A person can therefore meet the central baseline but still need to satisfy additional state conditions before approval.
| Layer | What it establishes | What you must verify locally |
|---|---|---|
| IGNOAPS central assistance | The Ministry of Rural Development’s 2025 publication describes eligibility as age 60 or older and membership in a BPL household. Central assistance is ₹200 per month for ages 60–79 and ₹500 per month from age 80. | How the state identifies BPL status, accepts applications, verifies residence and handles payment. |
| State or UT pension/top-up | An additional payment or a separate scheme administered by the state/UT. The name, age threshold, income test and amount can differ from IGNOAPS. | Residence, income or BPL conditions, other-pension rules, local approval, documents, payment total and renewal or verification requirements. |
The central amount is not automatically the recipient’s final monthly payment. The same 2025 publication reports state and UT additions ranging from ₹50 to ₹5,700 per month and describes an average pension of around ₹1,100 in many states/UTs. Those are broad published figures, not a promise for a particular applicant or location.

For a useful comparison, write down the age test, poverty or income test, residence rule, local-selection requirement, monthly central share, state addition, application channel, evidence list and verification method for each applicable layer. Two schemes with “old-age pension” in their names may have different approving authorities and may not be interchangeable. A local scheme can also change its amount or conditions through a current government order, so an old leaflet or search result is not enough.
The Ministry’s description is explicit: “The Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension Scheme extends financial assistance to elderly citizens aged 60 years and above who belong to families living below the poverty line by the Government of India.” It does not replace the state’s own application and verification process.
Step 1: Find the official service for the applicant’s state or UT
Jurisdiction comes first because the portal, form, approving authority and evidence vary. Use the state/UT government’s social welfare, social justice, pension or rural-development department website. The National Government Services Portal can also help you locate a service; search its literal service labels Apply Online for Old Age Pension and Apply for Indira Gandhi Old Age Pension Scheme, then confirm that the result belongs to the applicant’s own jurisdiction.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThere is no single nationwide application URL that safely covers every applicant. A directory listing may point to a service for a particular state, district or local body, not to a national form. Check the department name, government domain, jurisdiction and last-updated information before entering personal or bank details.
Do not rely on a private agent’s application link or assume that a portal available in one state works in another. An official service centre, local-body office or department help desk is safer when the applicant has no internet access, cannot authenticate digitally or needs help understanding a local-language form. Ask whether the centre is authorised for pension applications and what receipt it issues.
Step 2: Check national and local eligibility separately
National IGNOAPS baseline
For the central IGNOAPS layer, check that the applicant is at least 60 and belongs to a household identified as BPL under the applicable government records. The 2025 Ministry publication is the current reference for the central age and assistance amounts cited here. Being 60 or older by itself does not establish entitlement.
Age should be checked against the document accepted by the local authority, such as the record specified on its service page. Do not assume that a self-declared age or an Aadhaar entry will always be sufficient; follow the published evidence list and ask the designated office about an accepted alternative if a record is unavailable.

Read the current state/UT scheme page for every extra test. Common differences include a state residence requirement, a maximum monthly family income, an accepted BPL database, exclusion when another pension is being received, a requirement that the applicant be unsupported, or approval by a Gram Sabha, municipality or other local body. A state may also use a different age threshold or payment schedule for its own scheme.
Check whether the income ceiling is for the applicant, the household or all sources combined. Also check whether a spouse’s pension, an employee pension, a disability benefit or another social-security payment affects eligibility. These details are not uniform, and a national eligibility statement cannot answer them.

Uttarakhand example
Uttarakhand’s Social Welfare Department page, updated 18 February 2026, lists an old-age pension of ₹1,500 per month. Its stated conditions include age 60 or above, monthly income from all sources of no more than ₹4,000 or a BPL card, and selection in an open Gram Sabha meeting. These are Uttarakhand particulars, not a national rule.
For an Uttarakhand applicant, confirm that the relevant rural family-register or urban records, income/BPL evidence and Gram Sabha selection can be obtained before submission. The page’s amount is the listed state pension figure; do not assume it is the central ₹200 or ₹500 share alone, or that another state will pay ₹1,500.
When another NSAP benefit may fit
The related Annapurna benefit is described by the Ministry as 10 kilograms of food grains per month for senior citizens who are eligible for IGNOAPS but are not receiving an old-age pension. Ask the local authority whether Annapurna is being administered in the applicant’s area and what local registration or allocation process applies; do not assume that an IGNOAPS application automatically enrolls someone in Annapurna.
Step 3: Confirm the amount before applying
Write down the amount as two separate figures: the central share, if the applicant qualifies for IGNOAPS, and the state/UT share or separate state pension. This prevents the common mistake of quoting the central contribution as the total benefit.
For IGNOAPS, the Ministry of Rural Development’s 2025 publication gives ₹200 a month for beneficiaries aged 60–79 and ₹500 a month from age 80. The age band matters: a person who reaches 80 may need the payment record to be updated through the responsible authority. Ask how the local system handles that change and whether any fresh verification is required.
For an exact figure, use the current official state/UT scheme page or ask the designated service centre. Check whether the published amount is monthly, whether it changes at age 80, whether it is conditional on continuing BPL or income status, and whether another pension disqualifies the applicant. A state page may show a combined amount without breaking out the central and state components, so retain a copy or acknowledgement of the rule used for the application.

Do not multiply those figures into an expected payment, and do not treat the average as a guaranteed minimum.
Step 4: Prepare only the documents your jurisdiction requests
Do not assemble a generic nationwide file. The correct list is the one on the applicant’s current state/UT service page. Names, acceptable substitutes and certification rules can change.
Uttarakhand provides a useful illustration. Its listed evidence includes:

- Rural family register entry or an urban ration card.
- An income certificate or BPL card.
- A Gram Sabha or local-body selection proposal showing local approval.
- A certified photograph.
- A CBS (core banking solution) bank passbook for the account into which the pension will be paid.
- Aadhaar.
Other jurisdictions may ask for different residence proof, age evidence, disability or dependency information, a self-declaration, a death certificate for a spouse-related condition, or proof that the applicant is not receiving another pension. Upload clear scans where online submission is permitted, keep the originals available for inspection and make sure names and dates of birth match across records. If an official checklist allows an alternative to Aadhaar or a bank document, follow that published alternative rather than supplying an unlisted paper.

Keep a private copy of the submitted files and note the date on which each certificate was issued. An income certificate or local selection document may have a validity period under the state’s rules, so ask whether a newly issued copy is required.
Step 5: Submit through the official channel
Online submission
Choose the state/UT department’s own portal or an officially designated government platform. For Uttarakhand, the Social Welfare Department states: “Applicants can apply online through the Department’s pension portal (https://ssp.uk.gov.in), the Umang mobile app, or the Apni Sarkar portal (https://eservices.uk.gov.in).” Availability of those channels does not mean that every state offers the same options.
- Open the official service and select the old-age pension option, checking that the department and jurisdiction are correct.
- Create or access the applicant’s account using the identity or mobile-authentication method shown on that government page.
- Enter the applicant’s name, date of birth, address, household, income/BPL and bank details exactly as they appear on the supporting records.
- Upload each document in the specified format and size. If the local scheme requires a Gram Sabha or municipal proposal, include that document rather than assuming the department will obtain it.
- Review the declaration, submit the form and save the acknowledgement, application number or downloadable receipt.
Do not close the browser immediately after uploading. Confirm that the status says submitted or lodged, rather than draft, payment-pending or incomplete. If a one-time password or biometric step is used, make sure it is completed for the applicant’s record and not accidentally linked to another family member’s profile.
Assisted or offline submission
If the applicant cannot complete an online form, use the government service centre, village-level office, municipal office, block office or department counter named by the state. Ask the operator to show the submitted details before final submission. Obtain a stamped receipt or printed reference number; a verbal assurance is not proof that an application was lodged.
Recommended Free Tools
Take originals for inspection but hand over photocopies or uploads unless the office gives a written receipt for an original. Record the operator’s name, office and submission date. If a fee is listed for a service-centre transaction, request the official receipt and distinguish it from an unlisted intermediary charge.
Step 6: Complete local approval and follow-up
Many pension decisions involve a local verification stage. In Uttarakhand, selection in an open Gram Sabha meeting is part of the stated eligibility. Elsewhere, the responsible body may be a municipality, panchayat, block office or district welfare officer. Attend the meeting or verification appointment if the notice requires it, and make sure the applicant’s name appears in the relevant proposal or minutes.
Local approval is not necessarily the same as final sanction. A file can still await document scrutiny, database matching, bank validation or an order by a district authority. Keep the local proposal and the online acknowledgement together so that officials can match them.
There is no uniform national processing deadline or single status-tracking method established for every state and UT. Use the application reference to contact the department or service centre listed on the official scheme page. Ask specifically whether the file is awaiting document correction, local-body approval, bank validation or an order from the district authority. Keep copies of every correction and submission.

If the office says that the application is rejected, ask for the reason in writing and the rule or missing evidence involved. Do not submit repeated duplicate forms without resolving the first file; duplicates can make status checking harder.
Step 7: Check payment and ongoing verification after approval
NSAP has been digitised in many parts of the country, and the Ministry describes direct bank transfers as part of the system. Confirm the first credit in the account named in the sanction and report a failed or redirected payment to the local pension authority and bank. A passbook entry or bank statement is useful evidence when requesting correction.
Compare the credited amount with the sanction information and the confirmed central and state components. A first payment may not answer whether a later age-based increase or local top-up has been applied, so ask the pension office how the payment is calculated.
The Ministry also reports the launch of an Aadhaar-based mobile application for digital life certification on 15 July 2025. That announcement does not establish that every state requires the app, accepts it as the only verification route or uses the same schedule. Follow the verification and life-certificate instructions issued by the approving state/UT department. Keep the mobile number, bank account and identity records current, and notify the authority promptly if the applicant moves, changes banks or becomes ineligible under local rules.
Common problems and how to resolve them
The applicant meets the age rule but is rejected
Age is only one test. Check the BPL or income record, residence condition, local selection, duplicate-pension rule and any requirement that the applicant be included in a state database. Request the written reason or deficiency note from the official office and correct the specific issue rather than filing multiple duplicate applications.
The portal does not show the application
Verify that the reference number belongs to the correct state service and that submission was completed rather than saved as a draft. If the portal has no public tracker, take the acknowledgement to the designated service centre or department counter. Do not treat an unverified third-party status page as an official record.
A document is missing or names do not match
Ask the issuing authority what correction or alternative evidence it accepts. Uploading an unrelated document can delay verification. If a spelling difference exists between Aadhaar, the bank passbook and the pension form, resolve it through the relevant issuing institution and retain the correction receipt.
The bank account is not credited
Check the account number, branch details and account status first. Then ask the pension office whether the payment was authorised, returned or held for verification. Give the office the bank’s written error, if available, and request a correction against the pension record.
A local official asks for a fee
Official pension applications should be made through the government channel and the published service-centre process. Ask for an official fee receipt and report an unlisted charge to the department’s grievance channel or senior officer. Never surrender original identity or bank documents without a receipt.

The applicant has no internet or smartphone
An online route does not remove the need for assisted access. Use the local government service centre or office named by the state, take the applicant’s records and request help entering the form. Confirm that the operator submits the application under the applicant’s identity and provides a reference number.
Use this pre-submission checklist
- The applicant’s state or UT and the exact department service have been identified.
- Age, BPL/income, residence and other-pension conditions have been checked for both IGNOAPS and the local scheme.
- The expected payment is recorded as a central share plus any confirmed state/UT addition.
- Every document on the local checklist is available, legible and internally consistent.
- The bank account can receive direct transfers and belongs to the applicant or the account arrangement permitted by the scheme.
- Any Gram Sabha, municipal or other local-selection requirement has been completed or scheduled.
- The submitted form, receipt, application number and uploaded files have been saved.
- A follow-up contact and the state’s verification instructions are noted.
What to remember about applying in India
The reliable route is jurisdiction-first: identify the applicant’s state/UT, verify the central IGNOAPS baseline alongside local rules, use the official application channel, and retain proof of submission. The national framework supplies a central contribution, but the state or UT determines much of the practical experience—documents, local approval, top-up, status checks and continuing verification. When the local page is unclear, ask the named government office rather than relying on an old compendium or an intermediary.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the age limit for IGNOAPS?
The Ministry of Rural Development’s 2025 publication describes IGNOAPS eligibility from age 60, subject to membership in a household identified as below the poverty line. State schemes can impose additional or different conditions.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How much is the old-age pension?
The central IGNOAPS contribution is ₹200 per month for ages 60–79 and ₹500 from age 80. States and UTs may add money or run a separate pension; published additions range from ₹50 to ₹5,700, so check the current local amount.
Is there one online application form for all of India?
No. The state or UT determines the portal, service centre, approving authority and documents. Use the relevant government department or the National Government Services Portal to locate the correct jurisdiction-specific service.
Can someone apply without internet access?
Usually, the applicant can seek help through the government service centre, village or municipal office, block office or pension department counter identified by the state. Obtain a stamped receipt or application reference.
Which documents are required?
There is no universal list. The current local checklist controls. Uttarakhand, for example, lists a family-register entry or urban ration card, income certificate or BPL card, local selection proposal, certified photograph, CBS bank passbook and Aadhaar.
Does approval happen automatically after submitting the online form?
No. Local verification, Gram Sabha or municipal selection, document scrutiny, bank validation and a final sanction may still be required. Track the reference through the responsible state or local office.
What is Annapurna?
The Ministry describes Annapurna as 10 kilograms of food grains per month for senior citizens eligible for IGNOAPS who are not receiving an old-age pension. Ask the local authority whether and how it is administered in the applicant’s area.
What should I do if payment is missing?
Check the sanctioned bank account and passbook first, then contact the pension authority and bank with the application or sanction reference. Ask whether the payment was returned, held for verification or sent to incorrect account details.
The Bottom Line
Apply through the applicant’s own state or UT, not through a generic link. Check the IGNOAPS age-and-BPL baseline, then confirm local income, residence, selection, document, payment and verification rules. Save the official receipt and follow up with the named government office.
