How to Apply for an Indian IPO Using UPI or ASBA (2026 Guide)

To apply for an Indian IPO, submit a bid through an authorised intermediary, provide your PAN and demat details, choose a quantity and price (or the issue’s cut-off option), and authorise a block of funds through either UPI or ASBA. UPI sends a mandate to your eligible UPI app for approval with your UPI PIN. ASBA instructs an eligible bank to block the amount in your account. Only the amount due for shares actually allotted is debited; the rest is released.

For retail individual investors, SEBI Investor’s current guidance accessed in 2026 sets a ₹5 lakh per-transaction ceiling for UPI IPO applications. A third-party UPI ID or bank account is not considered for allocation. Issue-specific dates, categories, price rules, and eligible-bank or app lists always come from the IPO prospectus and the registrar’s current notices.

What UPI and ASBA do in an IPO application

Neither method requires you to transfer the entire application value to the issuer when you submit the bid. Both methods reserve the money while your application is processed.

  • With UPI, the sponsor or escrow bank sends a block mandate to the UPI ID you entered. You approve it in your UPI app with your UPI PIN, and the linked bank account is placed on hold for the application amount.
  • With ASBA (Application Supported by Blocked Amount), your Self-Certified Syndicate Bank (SCSB) places the hold directly through its designated branch or online ASBA facility.

After the basis of allotment is finalised, the amount required for allotted shares is debited. Any excess block is released. If you receive no shares, the full blocked amount is released; ASBA does not require a separate refund process. In ASBA, the blocked money remains in your bank account and continues to earn interest until it is debited or released.

The block is an authorisation, not a guarantee of allotment. The number of shares you receive depends on the issue’s subscription and allotment rules, not on whether you used UPI or ASBA.

What you need before opening the application

Prepare the records and account access that the intermediary will verify. A mismatch can make an otherwise valid-looking bid ineligible.

  • PAN: Use the applicant’s own PAN exactly as recorded in the demat and intermediary records.
  • Demat account: Keep the beneficiary account number and depository details available so allotted shares can be credited.
  • Bank account: For UPI, it must be linked to the applicant’s own eligible UPI ID. For ASBA, it must be an account accepted by the SCSB and the issue.
  • UPI access, if selected: Use an eligible UPI app and handle shown on the current permitted lists. The UPI ID must belong to the applicant, not a spouse, relative, friend, broker or other third party.
  • Clear funds: Keep enough available balance for the full bid value, including all lots requested at the selected price.
  • Issue information: Check the prospectus or registrar notice for opening and closing times, lot size, price band, cut-off availability, category limits, modification rules and the final time by which a mandate must be approved.

You can start an application with a permitted syndicate member, registered stockbroker, registrar and transfer agent, or depository participant. The channel you choose must be authorised for that particular issue.

How to apply for an IPO through UPI

1. Open the issue application with an authorised intermediary

Sign in to an authorised broker, registrar, depository participant or syndicate-member channel that is accepting applications for the IPO. Select the correct issue and investor category. Do not rely on an old application screen: issue dates, lot sizes and price bands are specific to each offer.

2. Enter your identity and demat information

Enter the applicant’s PAN and demat details exactly as they appear in the relevant records. Use the applicant’s own bank-linked UPI ID. A UPI ID belonging to another person or a bank account held by another person can cause the application to be rejected for allocation.

3. Choose quantity and price

Enter the number of lots or shares permitted by the issue and select a bid price within the stated price band. If the issue offers a cut-off choice to the relevant category, selecting cut-off means accepting the final issue price determined under the offer rules. Your intermediary’s application page should show which price choices are available.

Calculate the maximum block before submitting: quantity multiplied by the selected price, rounded according to the issue’s lot and price rules. Keep at least that much clear balance in the linked account. For example, a purely illustrative bid for 100 shares at ₹200 would require a ₹20,000 block before any allotment adjustment.

4. Submit the bid and record the application number

Review the PAN, demat account, quantity, price, category and UPI ID. Submit the application, then save the application number or acknowledgement. The intermediary forwards the request to the sponsor or escrow bank that handles the UPI block mandate.

5. Find the mandate in your UPI app

Open the UPI app connected to the bank account named in the application. Look in the app’s mandate, collect-request or IPO section, depending on the app’s current labels. Check that the issuer, amount, applicant details and validity period correspond to the IPO bid you just submitted.

6. Approve with your UPI PIN

Authorise the request with the UPI PIN for the linked bank account. Approval creates the block; it does not immediately debit the full amount. Approve before the deadline stated in the issue documents. A submitted broker form without an approved mandate is not a completed UPI application.

7. Confirm the block and keep the records

After authorisation, check the UPI app and bank account for a successful block or mandate status. Keep the application number, mandate reference and status message until allotment and release are complete. If the request is not visible, do not create a second application blindly; first verify the UPI ID, bank account, application status and the intermediary’s support instructions.

8. Observe the ₹5 lakh retail ceiling

SEBI Investor’s current guidance accessed in 2026 states a limit of ₹5 lakh per transaction for UPI IPO applications by retail individual investors. The limit applies to the application transaction, so check the full amount being blocked rather than only the value of one lot. If your intended retail application exceeds the permitted UPI ceiling, use a route allowed by the issue and your category, such as ASBA, subject to its own requirements.

How to apply for an IPO through ASBA

1. Confirm that your bank is an SCSB for the issue

ASBA is available through a Self-Certified Syndicate Bank and the issue-designated branch or online ASBA facility. The list and available channels can vary by issue. Confirm the bank’s participation and follow the exact instructions in the prospectus or application notice.

2. Open the ASBA form or online application

Use the designated branch or the bank’s online ASBA path. Select the IPO and investor category, then enter the applicant’s PAN, demat account, bank-account details, quantity and price or cut-off choice permitted by the issue.

3. Check the bid and authorise the block

Review every field before authorising the bank to block the application amount. The bank places the hold on the account; the funds remain in that account rather than moving to an issuer account at submission.

4. Retain the acknowledgement

For a branch application, keep the stamped acknowledgement or reference. For online ASBA, save the confirmation number and status page. These details are needed if you have to ask the bank or registrar about a missing or failed block.

5. Understand what happens to the money

The blocked amount continues to sit in your bank account and continues to earn interest. On allotment, the bank debits only the amount due for the shares allotted. Any unused portion is released. If there is no allotment, the entire block is released without a refund request.

UPI versus ASBA: practical differences

Point UPI ASBA
Main authorisation Approve a block mandate in an eligible UPI app using the account holder’s UPI PIN. Authorise a block through an SCSB’s designated branch or online ASBA facility.
Where funds remain In the bank account linked to the approved UPI ID, subject to the mandate block. In the bank account on which the SCSB placed the ASBA hold.
When debit occurs Only for shares allotted, after allotment is determined. Only for shares allotted, after allotment is determined.
Retail eligibility constraint Eligible bank, app and UPI handle; ₹5 lakh per transaction for retail individual investors under SEBI Investor’s current guidance accessed in 2026. Eligible SCSB and the issue’s designated branch or online facility.
Operational dependency You must receive and approve the mandate in time, with the correct UPI ID and sufficient balance. You must have access to the participating bank’s ASBA channel and enter the bank and demat details correctly.
Useful fit A mobile mandate workflow for an investor who meets the UPI eligibility and transaction ceiling. A bank-led block process, including cases where UPI is unavailable or the retail application would exceed its UPI ceiling.

“Useful fit” describes the documented mechanics and constraints; it is not a recommendation about whether to invest in any IPO.

Checks that prevent rejection or a failed block

Match all ownership details

The applicant name, PAN, demat account, bank account and UPI ID must relate to the same eligible applicant as required by the intermediary and depository records. Recheck spelling, account digits and the selected investor category before submission.

Use only your own UPI and bank account

SEBI’s stated position is that a third-party UPI ID or third-party bank account will not be considered for allocation. Entering another person’s payment details is not a workaround for a low balance or a missing UPI facility.

Verify current eligibility lists

Use only UPI apps and handles appearing on the current eligible lists, and use an SCSB and ASBA channel designated for the specific issue. App names, participating banks and technical routes can change, so an option that worked for an earlier IPO may not be valid for the next one.

Keep the full amount available

The account needs enough clear, withdrawable funds for the maximum amount requested at the chosen price. A pending debit, lien, minimum-balance requirement or other hold can leave less available than the displayed balance.

Approve before the issue deadline

Submitting the application and approving the mandate are separate actions. Follow the closing time and mandate-approval deadline in the prospectus or registrar notice. Do not assume that a request received after the cut-off will be accepted because the broker form was submitted earlier.

Save evidence

Keep the application number, mandate reference, bank or UPI status and relevant confirmation messages. These records allow the intermediary, bank or registrar to trace the request if the status does not update.

What happens after you submit

  1. The intermediary records the bid and forwards the payment-block request through the selected route.
  2. The UPI mandate or ASBA block remains in place while the issue processes applications and determines allotment.
  3. The issuer and registrar finalise the basis of allotment under the issue rules.
  4. The bank debits the amount corresponding to the shares allotted, if any.
  5. Any excess blocked amount is released. With no allotment, the full blocked amount is released.
  6. Allotted shares are credited to the demat account associated with the valid application.

The exact allotment, debit and release dates are issue-specific. Use the timetable in the prospectus and the registrar’s current status facility rather than relying on a generic IPO calendar.

Common problems and the appropriate response

The mandate does not appear

Confirm that the UPI ID entered in the application is the one logged into the app, that the linked bank account is active, and that the application was accepted by the intermediary. Check the app’s mandate or collect-request section and the application status. If the issue deadline is approaching, contact the intermediary or bank using the saved application number instead of submitting duplicate bids.

The mandate is visible but approval fails

Check the available balance, UPI PIN, bank-account status and mandate amount. A wrong PIN, insufficient clear funds or a bank-side service interruption can prevent approval. Resolve the account or service issue and follow the issue’s stated deadline; an unapproved request does not create the block.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The application shows a block but no allotment update

A block can remain while allotment is being processed. Keep the mandate reference and consult the registrar’s issue-specific status information. Do not treat the continued block as proof that shares were allotted.

The amount is still blocked after allotment

First compare the release or debit date in the issue timetable with the bank’s transaction status. If the expected date has passed, provide the application and mandate references to the bank or intermediary and request a trace. Avoid cancelling a valid bank instruction or creating a duplicate application without guidance.

An ASBA form is rejected

Ask the SCSB to identify the rejected field or eligibility condition. Common checks include the issue selected, PAN, demat account, bank account, category, price, lot quantity and available balance. Correct only what the issue rules permit and preserve the original acknowledgement.

Choosing between the two routes

Choose UPI when all of these are true

  • Your own bank account is linked to an eligible UPI ID and app.
  • The intended retail application is within the ₹5 lakh per-transaction UPI ceiling stated in SEBI Investor’s current guidance accessed in 2026.
  • You can monitor the app and approve the mandate before the issue deadline.
  • You are comfortable verifying a mobile mandate and retaining its reference.

Choose ASBA when these conditions matter

  • You do not have an eligible UPI app or do not want to use a UPI mandate.
  • Your retail UPI application would exceed the stated per-transaction ceiling.
  • Your participating bank’s ASBA channel is easier for you to verify than a mobile mandate.
  • You prefer the bank-led process in which the blocked balance remains in the account and continues to earn interest.

Both routes still require a valid PAN, demat account, permitted intermediary, sufficient funds and compliance with the individual IPO’s instructions. The payment route cannot correct an ineligible category, an incorrect bid or a mismatched identity record.

Important limits and qualifications

  • The ₹5 lakh figure is a per-transaction ceiling for retail individual investors using UPI, as stated in SEBI Investor’s guidance current when accessed in 2026. It is not a promise that every bank or app will process every amount up to that ceiling.
  • UPI and ASBA availability can differ by issue, intermediary, bank, app and investor category.
  • Price bands, lot sizes, cut-off choices, modification windows, mandate deadlines and allotment dates are controlled by the issue documents and can change.
  • Blocking money does not predict allotment and does not make an IPO suitable for your financial situation. Review the prospectus and consider your own risk, liquidity and investment objectives.

A concise application checklist

  1. Confirm the IPO’s dates, category, lot size, price rules and permitted UPI or ASBA channels.
  2. Match the applicant’s PAN, name and demat records.
  3. Choose the bid quantity and price or cut-off option allowed by the issue.
  4. Use your own eligible UPI ID and linked bank account, or an eligible SCSB account for ASBA.
  5. Verify that clear funds cover the full application amount.
  6. Submit through an authorised intermediary and save the application number.
  7. For UPI, find and approve the mandate with the UPI PIN before the stated deadline.
  8. For ASBA, authorise the bank block and retain the branch or online acknowledgement.
  9. Track allotment, debit and release using the registrar, bank and intermediary records.
