The clearest way to analyze Meta earnings is to connect four bridges: revenue growth, the split between ad volume and ad pricing, the engagement base that supplies inventory, and the cash cost of the artificial-intelligence build-out. Start with reported revenue and the next-quarter outlook, decompose advertising into impressions and average price per ad, then test whether rising infrastructure and personnel costs are translating into operating profit and free cash flow. Treat one quarter as evidence in a trend, not as proof that a single factor explains the whole business.
The figures below use Meta Platforms, Inc.’s 2025 Form 10-K and its Q2 2026 earnings materials. They show a company still growing rapidly while committing unusually large sums to data centers, networking, accelerated computing and AI talent. That combination can produce strong earnings and weaker cash conversion at the same time, so an income-statement-only reading is incomplete.

1. Establish the revenue scale, direction and outlook
Begin with the size of the business before interpreting margins or valuation. Meta reported full-year 2025 revenue of $200.97 billion, net income of $60.46 billion and diluted earnings per share of $23.49. Those figures provide the base against which later quarters should be measured.

Do not confuse a strong revenue rate with equally strong earnings growth. Revenue is the first line of the analysis; expenses, depreciation, taxes, share count and cash investment determine what reaches shareholders. A useful first pass therefore records revenue growth beside total expenses, operating income, net income, diluted EPS and free cash flow for at least four consecutive quarters.
2. Split advertising growth into impressions and price
Advertising is the central engine of Meta’s revenue, and two reported measures reveal whether growth is coming from selling more inventory, charging more for each ad, or both. Meta defines average price per ad as total advertising revenue divided by the number of ads delivered. In simplified form:
advertising revenue ≈ ad impressions × average price per ad

How to interpret the two drivers
- Positive volume and positive price: usually the healthiest combination because advertisers are paying more while the platform is also delivering more ads.
- Volume-led growth: can indicate expanding reach or a higher ad load, but it may carry a future engagement or user-experience trade-off if monetization per impression does not keep up.
- Price-led growth: can reflect stronger advertiser demand, better targeting, improved formats or a favorable geographic mix. It can also slow if auction demand weakens.
- One driver turning negative: requires a closer look at geography, product mix and measurement changes rather than an automatic conclusion about the whole company.
Compare the impression and price rates with total advertising revenue growth, not with total company revenue alone. Non-advertising activities and currency effects can make the company-wide number diverge from the advertising bridge. Also check whether the reported change is measured against the same period and methodology; Meta warns that year-over-year ad metrics can be affected by data limitations, methodology changes and technical errors.

3. Use daily active people as a leading engagement signal
Meta reports daily active people, or DAP, across its services. DAP is not revenue, but it indicates the size and momentum of the audience on which ad inventory depends. The useful question is whether engagement growth is keeping pace with monetization.

The change in growth rate matters more than a single absolute count. If DAP growth slows while impressions and price per ad rise, monetization is doing more of the work. That may be positive if advertisers are accepting higher prices because targeting and performance improved; it may be less durable if it depends mainly on increasing ad load. If DAP, impressions and price all rise together, the business has a broader growth base.
Do not treat DAP as a precise count of unique human users. It is a company-defined metric covering people across services, and the filing cautions that geographic and advertising measures rely partly on estimates. Use several quarters of DAP, impression and price data together.
4. Map AI investment into expenses, depreciation and capital spending
AI investment affects earnings through more than one line. New data centers, servers and networking equipment are capital expenditures; the related depreciation appears later in operating expenses. Cloud capacity, research infrastructure and technical compensation generally hit expenses sooner. Legal settlements and severance can create additional volatility unrelated to the recurring cost of running the advertising business.
Meta reported the following Q2 2026 figures:

Capital expenditure is not the same as an expense in the quarter paid. It uses cash immediately, while depreciation spreads the accounting cost over the useful life of the assets. During a rapid AI build-out, free cash flow can therefore fall before depreciation fully reaches the income statement. Conversely, a quarter with large depreciation can show weaker operating income even if the related cash payment occurred earlier.

Separate recurring investment from unusual charges
When calculating an underlying expense trend, show total reported costs first. Then identify legal charges and severance separately, as Meta did for Q2 2026. Do not simply remove every large item: a restructuring charge may recur if the company continues to reorganize, and infrastructure-related depreciation is a real cost even though it is non-cash in the current period. Present reported and adjusted views side by side so the adjustment is transparent.
5. Compare actual spending with management guidance
Guidance is valuable only when you preserve the date and the period it covers. Meta’s Q2 2026 update put full-year 2026 capital expenditures, including principal payments on finance leases, at $130 billion to $145 billion. The same update gave full-year 2026 expenses of $165 billion to $169 billion. An earlier full-year 2025 release had guided capital expenditures to $115 billion to $135 billion.

Keep the periods separate when you do the variance calculation. A 2025 actual cannot be used to judge whether Meta is meeting a 2026 forecast. For each release, save the original range, the revised range, the publication date and the eventual actual. Repeated upward revisions can signal that demand for compute or construction capacity is exceeding earlier plans; a reduction may indicate slower deployment, supply constraints or a change in project timing.
6. Test earnings quality and cash conversion
Net income and EPS answer how much profit was recognized; free cash flow tests how much cash remained after operating needs and investment. Calculate or collect these measures together:
- Revenue and year-over-year growth
- Operating income and operating margin
- Net income and diluted EPS
- Operating cash flow
- Capital expenditures, including the treatment of finance-lease principal payments
- Free cash flow after infrastructure investment
A quarter can show impressive revenue and EPS while free cash flow is compressed by a data-center build-out. The reverse can also occur when cash spending is temporarily light but depreciation and other expenses remain elevated. Compare at least four quarters and identify whether changes come from operating performance, working capital, capital spending, legal charges or restructuring.

For Q2 2026, the disclosed legal and severance amounts should be shown separately from the recurring cost base. The full-year 2025 net income and diluted EPS figures are useful anchors, but they do not substitute for the quarter’s operating cash-flow and free-cash-flow disclosures. If a release does not provide a measure you need, mark it as unavailable in your worksheet rather than infer it from earnings.
7. Examine the business mix: Family of Apps, Reality Labs and AI infrastructure
Meta’s advertising platforms and its investment businesses have different economics. In the segment disclosures, compare the core Family of Apps results with Reality Labs and identify how much operating income is being generated before investment losses. The available data establish the need to compare Family of Apps performance with Reality Labs losses and AI investment, but they do not provide a loss amount for Reality Labs; use the figure in the specific earnings release you are analyzing rather than importing a number from another period.
Questions to ask in the segment review
- Is Family of Apps operating income growing faster or slower than revenue?
- Are Reality Labs losses widening, narrowing or changing because of a one-time item?
- Are infrastructure and technical-hiring costs supporting products that are already monetizing, or are they primarily preparatory spending?
- Does consolidated free cash flow reflect the same strength shown by the advertising segment?
This framework prevents a common mistake: treating every dollar of AI spending as either immediately destructive or automatically value creating. The economic result depends on utilization, useful life, depreciation, revenue generated by new capabilities and the opportunity cost of the cash committed.

Meta says 2026 expense growth is driven mainly by infrastructure, depreciation, cloud spending and technical talent, including AI hiring. Map each explanation to the financial statement:

Use the explanation as a hypothesis, not as a conclusion. The next report should show whether the stated driver changed in size, whether revenue growth absorbed it and whether management altered the full-year expense range.

9. Account for measurement limits before drawing a conclusion
Meta’s 2025 Form 10-K warns that geographic and advertising metrics can be estimates affected by data limitations, methodology changes and technical errors. That warning has practical consequences:
- Do not attribute all revenue growth to price or all weakness to user engagement from one quarter’s percentages.
- Check whether a restatement of methodology changed the comparison with prior periods.
- Use multi-quarter averages when a metric moves sharply.
- Separate what Meta directly reported from your own inference about ad load, geography or product mix.
- Keep regional conclusions proportional to the quality of the underlying location data.
The most defensible analysis states both the observed metric and the uncertainty around its measurement. A precise-looking percentage is not automatically a precise economic explanation.
10. A repeatable worksheet for the next Meta earnings report
Use this sequence immediately after a release. It is designed to prevent a headline revenue number from crowding out the cash and investment questions.

- Record the period and source. Note the quarter, the full-year period, the release date and whether each number came from the earnings release, an exhibit or the Form 10-K.
- Capture scale and direction. Enter revenue, year-over-year growth and the next-quarter revenue range. Calculate the midpoint of the range and compare it with the prior outlook.
- Build the advertising bridge. Enter ad-impression growth and average-price-per-ad growth separately. Add the company’s definition of average price so the denominator remains clear.
- Add engagement. Record DAP for the relevant month or quarter and its year-over-year change. Compare its direction with impressions and price.
- Normalize carefully. List total expenses first, then legal, severance and other disclosed unusual items. Keep reported and adjusted results in separate columns.
- Follow the cash. Enter operating cash flow, capital expenditures and free cash flow. Mark whether capex includes principal payments on finance leases.
- Track the AI build-out. Compare actual capex and expenses with the ranges issued previously, preserving every revision and its date.
- Review the segments. Put Family of Apps operating performance beside Reality Labs results and the company-wide infrastructure commitment.
- Write a one-sentence verdict. State whether growth was volume-led, price-led or balanced; whether expenses grew faster than revenue; and whether cash conversion strengthened or weakened.
11. What would change the investment interpretation?
Several combinations of results can lead to different conclusions:
- Balanced advertising growth with controlled expenses: stronger evidence that the core platform can fund AI investment internally.
- Strong price growth but slowing DAP and impressions: a more monetized but potentially narrower audience, requiring scrutiny of ad load and durability.
- Rapid impressions with weak price growth: expanding inventory that may not yet command strong advertiser demand.
- Revenue growth below expense growth and rising capex: pressure on operating leverage and free cash flow, even if EPS remains positive.
- Higher capex guidance with improving utilization evidence: a potentially productive investment cycle, though depreciation and cash demands still need monitoring.
- Large legal or severance charges: a quarter that needs reported and adjusted views rather than a single margin conclusion.
These are decision branches, not predictions. The next report should determine which branch the evidence supports, using the same definitions and period comparisons.
12. A concise interpretation of the Q2 2026 evidence
The Q2 2026 data describe a business with high revenue growth, advertising expansion from both more impressions and higher average prices, and a sharply heavier cost and investment burden. Engagement remained higher in absolute terms than at the end of 2025, but its year-over-year growth rate was slower. Meanwhile, the full-year capital commitment rose to a range far above the prior year’s actual spending and was accompanied by a substantial expense outlook.
The correct takeaway is not simply that AI spending is “hurting” or “helping” profits. The immediate cost is visible in expenses, depreciation, legal and severance volatility, and cash committed to infrastructure. The potential payoff must be tested through future revenue growth, ad efficiency, operating margins, segment performance and free-cash-flow conversion. That is why a complete Meta earnings analysis follows the bridges rather than relying on EPS alone.
