A routine stock split generally does not create a current U.S. federal tax bill. You receive more shares representing the same ownership interest, so your total basis stays the same while your per-share basis falls (or rises in a reverse split). To report a later sale correctly, recalculate each purchase lot, preserve its holding period, and compare your figures with the broker’s Form 1099-B. If the form is wrong, report the corrected amount on Form 8949 and carry it to Schedule D.

What a stock split changes for tax purposes

In a conventional split, a company changes the number of shares outstanding without changing the proportional ownership represented by your position. In a 2-for-1 split, every old share becomes two shares. The market price is ordinarily adjusted to reflect the larger share count, but the tax basis of the position is not increased simply because the account displays more shares.

“No. Stock splits don’t create a taxable event; you merely receive more stock reflecting the same ownership interest in the corporation that issued the stock.” — Internal Revenue Service

The key distinction is between total basis and per-share basis:

  • Clear Print Quality: Displays high-resolution printing intended to remain legible through regular use and cleaning
  • Total basis: the combined tax investment in a purchase lot. A routine split leaves this amount unchanged.
  • Per-share basis: total basis divided by the number of shares in that lot. A split changes this number because the share count changes.
  • Taxable event: normally occurs when you sell, exchange or otherwise dispose of shares—not when the issuer credits additional split shares.

For example, 100 shares with a $15 basis per share have a $1,500 total basis. After a 2-for-1 split, you own 200 shares with the same $1,500 total basis, or $7.50 per share. The IRS describes the result this way: your overall basis does not change, but your per-share basis does.

This article addresses ordinary U.S. federal stock splits. State rules, gifts, inherited shares, employee equity, mergers and other reorganizations, options, and cash paid for fractional shares can require different analysis.

How to recalculate basis, lot by lot

Do not divide one blended account balance unless every share came from one purchase on the same terms. Keep each purchase lot separate because lots can have different costs, acquisition dates, holding periods and covered-security status.

  1. Record the exact split ratio. A 2-for-1 split has a split factor of 2. A 3-for-2 split has a factor of 1.5. Use the ratio stated in the issuer’s corporate-action notice and the effective date shown on your account records.
  2. List every affected lot. For each purchase, record the original shares, purchase date, purchase price, commissions or other purchase costs, reinvested dividends, and any prior basis adjustments.
  3. Multiply the lot’s share count by the split factor. A 100-share lot becomes 200 shares in a 2-for-1 split. The resulting share count is the number associated with that lot after the split.
  4. Leave the lot’s total adjusted basis unchanged by the split itself. If the lot’s adjusted basis was $1,000 immediately before the split, it remains $1,000 immediately after the split, before considering any separate adjustment.
  5. Divide unchanged total basis by the new share count. A $1,000 lot that becomes 200 shares has a $5 per-share basis.
  6. Apply legitimate non-split adjustments. Add purchase commissions and fees when they are part of basis, and incorporate prior adjustments such as those reflected in your dividend-reinvestment or other transaction records. Do not add the split shares’ market value as if it were a new purchase.
  7. Reconcile the result with your broker. Compare the recalculated lot ledger with the post-split position and the cost-basis information later reported on Form 1099-B.

The arithmetic works for any stated ratio. With a 3-for-2 split, multiply each lot’s shares by 1.5 and divide the same total basis by the new share count. Keep enough decimal precision to avoid a cumulative rounding error; round only as required when entering a tax form.

Worked 2-for-1 examples

One purchase lot

Item Before split After 2-for-1 split
Shares 100 200
Total basis $1,500 $1,500
Basis per share $15 $7.50

No income is created by the additional 100 shares. If you later sell 50 of the post-split shares from this lot, the basis allocated to those shares is generally 50 × $7.50, or $375, before any sale-related adjustment.

Two lots bought at different prices

Lot Original shares Original price Total basis Shares after split Post-split basis per share
A 100 $10 $1,000 200 $5
B 100 $12 $1,200 200 $6
Combined position 200 — $2,200 400 Not one uniform lot basis

The combined account now shows 400 shares and $2,200 of total basis, but the lots must remain distinct. Lot A has a $5 per-share basis and lot B has a $6 per-share basis. Their acquisition dates also remain relevant when determining whether a later gain or loss is short-term or long-term.

What happens when you sell split-adjusted shares

When you dispose of shares, the taxable gain or loss is generally the amount realized minus the basis of the shares sold, with the applicable holding-period and transaction rules. The split changes the basis assigned to each share; it does not erase the lot history.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Specific-share identification

If you want to sell particular shares, identify the lot adequately and notify the broker at the time of the sale. The broker’s records should show the quantity and acquisition date of the shares selected. This approach can let you choose a lot with a higher or lower basis, depending on your tax planning and the rules that apply to your account.

FIFO when you cannot identify shares

If you cannot adequately identify the shares sold, first-in, first-out (FIFO) generally applies: the oldest shares are treated as sold first. After a split, “oldest” refers to the original acquisition dates carried through the split, not the date the additional split shares appeared in your account.

Average-basis exceptions

Special average-basis rules can apply to some mutual funds and dividend-reinvestment plans. Do not substitute an average basis for the lot method used by an ordinary stock position unless the applicable rules and your account records support it.

Holding period

Preserve each lot’s original acquisition date in your ledger. A split does not turn an old lot into a newly purchased lot; the acquisition date remains necessary for the holding-period classification of a later sale.

Covered and noncovered securities

For covered securities, brokers generally report the acquisition date, holding period, cost or other basis, and wash-sale information on Form 1099-B. A correctly updated broker record can save substantial reconstruction work, but you should still verify it against your own confirmations and split notice.

Positions acquired before the applicable covered-security dates, along with other noncovered positions, may not have complete basis information supplied by the broker. In those cases, you are responsible for reconstructing the basis from purchase confirmations, statements and corporate-action records. A blank or incomplete broker field does not mean the basis is zero.

Situation What the broker may provide Your action
Covered stock acquired after the applicable reporting date Acquisition date, basis, holding period and applicable wash-sale information on Form 1099-B Check the split-adjusted figures against your lot ledger and report any needed correction
Noncovered or older position Basis may be missing or incomplete Rebuild each lot from confirmations, statements and issuer notices
Shares sold after a split Basis for the lot the broker treats as sold Confirm that the selected lot, split factor and acquisition date are correct

How to correct a wrong Form 1099-B

A broker’s number is information reported to the IRS, not an instruction to copy an incorrect figure onto your return. Start by determining whether the error is in the share count, split ratio, acquisition date, total basis, per-share basis, lot selected, or wash-sale amount.

  1. Build your own calculation. Show the original lot, split factor, post-split share count, unchanged total basis, and resulting per-share basis. Include commissions, fees and earlier adjustments that belong in basis.
  2. Contact the broker promptly. Provide the issuer’s split notice and your transaction records, and ask for a corrected basis record or corrected Form 1099-B if the broker can issue one.
  3. Compare the corrected information with your sale confirmation. Make sure the quantity and lot used for the sale match the identification instructions you gave the broker.
  4. Use Form 8949 when a correction is still needed. Enter the broker-reported amount in the appropriate column, enter the corrected amount and the required adjustment code, and include the explanation required by the form instructions.
  5. Carry the corrected totals to Schedule D. Keep the calculation, the original form, correspondence with the broker and supporting statements with your tax records.

The exact Form 8949 code and reporting treatment depend on the type of discrepancy. Follow the current form instructions for the year of sale rather than copying a code from an older return. If the discrepancy involves several lots, wash sales or a large dollar amount, tax-preparation software that supports Form 8949 and Schedule D—or a qualified tax professional—can reduce transcription errors.

Records to keep

Investor.gov cautions that not all basis adjustments necessarily appear on an account statement. Treat statements as one source, not as a complete substitute for transaction records. Retain the documents that allow another person to reproduce your calculation years later.

  • Original purchase confirmations showing date, quantity, price and commissions or fees.
  • Dividend-reinvestment records, including reinvestment dates, shares and amounts.
  • Issuer’s corporate-action or stock-split notice showing the ratio and effective date.
  • Pre-split and post-split account statements.
  • Lot-selection instructions or written confirmation that the broker accepted specific-share identification.
  • Sales confirmations showing quantity, proceeds and settlement information.
  • Every Form 1099-B received for the sale year.
  • Your split-adjusted lot ledger and the spreadsheet or worksheet used to calculate it.
  • Broker correspondence, corrected forms and any written explanation of a basis change.

Keep the records for as long as they are relevant to establishing basis and the holding period, including the period in which a sale is reported and the time your tax records must be retained under applicable rules.

Choosing a documentation and reporting method

Decision Advantages Risks or limitations Best use
Specific-lot identification Connects the sale to an explicitly chosen acquisition lot and its actual basis Requires timely instructions and reliable broker confirmation When you need control over which basis and holding period are sold
FIFO Default method when shares cannot be adequately identified; straightforward to apply May select a lot with an unintended gain, loss or holding period When no valid lot-selection record exists
Broker-reported basis Convenient and often complete for covered securities Can be wrong after a corporate action or incomplete for noncovered shares As a starting point that you verify against your records
Reconstructed basis Allows accurate reporting when broker data is missing or incorrect Requires confirmations, split documentation and careful lot accounting For noncovered positions or unresolved 1099-B errors
Self-prepared Form 8949 and Schedule D Direct control over a small number of uncomplicated corrections Easy to transpose quantities, dates, codes or totals Simple, well-documented adjustments you understand
Tax software or professional assistance Can import transactions, track lots and generate supporting forms Imported data still needs review; fees and advice scope vary Many transactions, multiple splits, wash sales or material dollar amounts

Common mistakes and how to fix them

Treating split shares as a new purchase

Adding the post-split market value to basis creates an inflated basis and an understated future gain. Replace that entry with the original lot’s unchanged total basis divided among the new shares.

Dividing the whole account by the new share count

This erases different purchase prices and acquisition dates. Restore the original lots and perform the split calculation separately for each one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using the old per-share basis

Keeping $10 per share after a 2-for-1 split doubles the basis assigned to a sale. Multiply the shares by two and divide the same total basis by the doubled count.

Ignoring commissions, fees or reinvested dividends

Basis generally begins with purchase price plus purchase costs. Missing a reinvestment lot or a fee can distort both the basis and the holding period. Add those entries before applying the split factor.

Assuming the 1099-B is automatically correct

Corporate actions can produce stale or incomplete records, especially for noncovered positions. Reconcile the form to your confirmations and issuer notice before filing.

Failing to preserve lot identification

A later claim that you intended to sell a particular lot may not be enough if you did not identify it adequately and notify the broker. Save the broker’s written acknowledgment at the time of sale.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Rounding each share too early

Rounding every intermediate figure can make the total of the lots differ from the account’s actual basis. Keep full precision in your worksheet and round only where the tax form requires it.

A practical timeline from split notice to tax return

When the issuer announces the split

  • Download the official notice and note the ratio, record date and effective date.
  • Export current holdings and transaction history before the account display changes.
  • Mark every affected lot, including reinvestment lots.

After the split is processed

  • Confirm that each lot’s share count was multiplied by the correct factor.
  • Confirm that the combined total basis did not increase because of the split alone.
  • Save the post-split statement and your recalculated ledger.

When you place a sale

  • Decide whether to identify a specific lot or accept FIFO.
  • Give the broker the required identification instructions and obtain confirmation.
  • Check the trade confirmation for quantity, proceeds and lot information.

When tax forms arrive

  • Match Form 1099-B to the lot sold, the split-adjusted basis and the holding period.
  • Ask the broker to correct material errors.
  • Use Form 8949 and Schedule D to report a documented correction when necessary.

Situations that need separate analysis

The simple calculation in this guide is for an ordinary stock split in a U.S. taxable brokerage account. Do not assume the same result without checking the applicable rules when the transaction includes:

  • A reverse split, especially if the broker pays cash for a fractional share.
  • A merger, acquisition, spin-off or other reorganization described as a corporate action rather than a straightforward split.
  • Employee stock options, restricted stock, purchase plans or other compensation equity.
  • Shares received as a gift or inheritance.
  • Tax-advantaged retirement accounts, where ordinary brokerage-account reporting may not apply.
  • State or local tax rules that differ from the federal treatment.
  • Wash-sale activity spanning multiple accounts or securities.

In these cases, obtain the transaction’s governing documents and use the rules for that specific event. A broker’s generic “split” label may not describe all of the tax consequences.

Bottom line for filing

For a routine split, report no income merely because additional shares arrived. Keep the original total basis with each lot, multiply the lot’s shares by the split factor, divide that unchanged basis across the new shares, and preserve the original acquisition date. When you sell, use adequately identified lots or FIFO, verify covered-security information, and correct any inaccurate 1099-B through Form 8949 and Schedule D with records that show your calculation.
