Discover’s 5% Cashback Bonus is a rotating quarterly offer. For the October 1–December 31, 2026 quarter, activate the offer in your Discover account before spending, then use an eligible Discover it or Discover More account for purchases that qualify under the merchant’s coding. Activation is free, but it must be completed again every quarter.
What Discover’s rotating 5% offer covers
Discover changes the bonus categories every calendar quarter. The offer is not a permanent 5% rate on every purchase and it is not automatically carried forward from one quarter to the next. Each quarter has its own category list and date range, and your account must be activated for that period.

| 2026 quarter | Dates | Published 5% categories |
|---|---|---|
| First quarter | January 1–March 31, 2026 | Grocery stores, wholesale clubs and select streaming services |
| Second quarter | April 1–June 30, 2026 | Restaurants and home improvement stores |
| Third quarter | July 1–September 30, 2026 | Gas stations, transportation and drug stores |
| Fourth quarter | October 1–December 31, 2026 | Restaurants, entertainment and utilities |
The table reflects Discover’s published 2026 calendar. Categories are sequential periods, not competing plans. When a new quarter begins, check the current calendar rather than relying on a prior list or an old screenshot.
Check eligibility before you activate
Use an eligible Discover account
The 2026 calendar identifies Discover it and Discover More cardmembers for this program. If you have a different Discover product, sign in and read the offer displayed for that account; do not assume that every Discover card receives the same categories or activation prompt.

Keep the account open and in good standing
Discover’s cardmember agreement says the account must be open and in good standing to activate. Resolve a closed-account issue, suspension or other account restriction before expecting a new quarter’s enrollment to work. Activation does not change the account’s underlying terms.
Confirm the dates
Activation is tied to the quarter shown in the offer. A purchase made on September 30 belongs to the July–September period, while a purchase dated October 1 belongs to the October–December period, subject to the transaction-date rules described below. Activate as soon as the new category list is available instead of waiting until the end of the quarter.
How to activate Discover’s 5% categories
Discover says activation is completely free. You can use the mobile app, your online account or the telephone number on Discover’s official account service.
- Open the current offer. In the Discover mobile app or after signing in to your Discover online account, locate the Cashback Bonus or 5% categories section for the active quarter.
- Review the category names and dates. Read the displayed list before selecting the activation control. This prevents confusing the current quarter with an older promotion.
- Select the activation option. Tap or click the control to activate the quarter. No purchase is required to enroll.
- Wait for the confirmation. Look for an on-screen confirmation or an account status showing that the quarter is activated. Do not close the screen immediately after tapping if the account has not confirmed the change.
- Save a record. Note the activation date and the quarter’s categories in a phone note or spending tracker. A record is useful if you later need to ask Discover about a transaction.
Activate by phone
If you cannot use the app or website, call Discover at 1-800-DISCOVER (1-800-347-2683) and follow the representative’s or automated system’s instructions for the quarterly Cashback Bonus. Have the card and account information available, and ask for confirmation that the specific quarter has been activated.
What activation does not do
- It does not make every purchase earn 5%.
- It does not override a merchant’s category code.
- It does not move a transaction into the quarter in which you placed an online order if the merchant supplies a later transaction date.
- It does not remove the quarterly spending limit.
A five-minute setup before using the offer
After activation, make a quick checklist so the offer is easier to manage. First, record the quarter’s exact dates: October 1 through December 31, 2026. Next, write down the three categories—restaurants, entertainment and utilities—and the $1,500 combined quarterly limit. Finally, note which account you activated if you have more than one Discover card. This avoids accidentally charging a category purchase to an account that was not enrolled.
Keep the confirmation in your account history or take a screenshot for your own records. The confirmation does not guarantee that a later charge will qualify, but it establishes that you completed the required enrollment. If another cardholder shares household spending, make sure that person knows which Discover account is activated and which transactions you are tracking.
Understand the 5% cap and calculate the potential bonus
The offer pays 5% on up to $1,500 in eligible category purchases per quarter, for a stated maximum of $75 in 5% Cashback Bonus per quarter. The $1,500 limit applies to purchases that qualify for the bonus category; it is not a guarantee that every transaction that appears to match the category will be accepted.
| Eligible category spending during the quarter | 5% calculation | Potential 5% reward |
|---|---|---|
| $500 | $500 × 0.05 | $25 |
| $1,000 | $1,000 × 0.05 | $50 |
| $1,500 | $1,500 × 0.05 | $75, the published quarterly maximum |
These examples assume that every listed purchase is eligible, is processed during the quarter and has not been excluded by merchant coding or payment routing. Once the eligible category total reaches $1,500, purchases above that amount should not be treated as earning the 5% rate. The available offer terms, rather than a personal spending estimate, determine how any amount above the cap is handled.

The cap is a quarterly allowance, not a separate allowance for each category
Restaurants, entertainment and utilities all draw from the same quarterly category-purchase allowance. For example, $600 in qualifying restaurant charges, $500 in qualifying entertainment charges and $400 in qualifying utility charges would total $1,500 and produce the published $75 maximum, assuming the charges were coded and dated correctly. Reaching the limit in one category leaves less room for the other two.
Track the remaining allowance
Start with the $1,500 quarterly limit and subtract only transactions you reasonably expect to qualify. Keep a running total by transaction date, not merely by the day you made the purchase. If a transaction is later reversed, returned or reclassified, adjust your record and check the account’s reward activity.
Separate your tracker into the three category names and include the merchant, amount, date and payment route. A running total helps you decide whether a new charge is still worth directing to the activated card, while the details make a later account review easier.

Merchant category codes control eligibility
Discover explains that merchants receive merchant category codes, or MCCs, based on their typical products and services. Discover does not assign those codes. The network uses the code supplied for the transaction to determine whether it fits the quarterly category, so the item you bought and the wording on your receipt are not conclusive.
For example, a business that sells food may process a transaction under a code other than a restaurant code, or a venue that includes entertainment may be coded as a different type of business. A purchase can therefore look like a listed category to you while failing the program’s coding test. There is no reliable way to change the merchant’s MCC after the fact.
Third-party payments and digital wallets can obscure the details
Discover cautions that certain third-party payment accounts and digital-wallet transactions may not earn the bonus when the transaction does not provide sufficient details or a qualifying MCC. A wallet, marketplace or intermediary can appear between you and the merchant in the payment record. Do not assume that routing a purchase through a wallet preserves the category classification of the underlying seller.
When practical, paying the qualifying merchant directly gives the transaction a clearer path. That is a way to reduce uncertainty, not a promise of eligibility: the merchant still controls the code supplied with the charge, and Discover does not assign it.

U.S. merchant requirement
The offer applies to purchases from merchants in the United States. A business’s website, currency display or brand name does not by itself establish that the transaction will be treated as a qualifying U.S. merchant purchase.

Handle quarter-end and online-order timing carefully
The transaction date supplied by the merchant determines the quarter in which an online purchase is considered. Discover notes that an online order’s transaction date may be the date the item ships, not the date you submitted the order. An order placed on December 31 can therefore be dated in January and fall outside the October–December 2026 period.
Near the end of a quarter, leave time for the merchant to submit the transaction. If the category is important to your plan, make the purchase early enough that a shipping or processing delay is less likely to move it into the next quarter. Keep the order confirmation and final transaction record so you can compare the order date with the date that appears on your account.
The same boundary issue applies at the start of a quarter. A charge initiated before October 1 but supplied with an October transaction date may be evaluated in the fourth quarter, while a charge initiated late on December 31 may not be. The date shown for the transaction, rather than your intention about the quarter, is the practical date to monitor.

When the reward should appear
Discover’s cardmember agreement says rewards are generally added within two billing periods. A qualifying purchase may therefore appear in your transaction history before the corresponding Cashback Bonus is posted. Wait through that period before treating a missing reward as a final denial.
- Check that the account was activated for the relevant quarter.
- Confirm the transaction’s posted or supplied date and compare it with the quarter dates.
- Review your running category total to see whether the quarterly limit had already been reached.
- Allow up to two billing periods for the reward to be added.
- If the reward is still missing, contact Discover and provide the transaction date, merchant name, amount and payment method used.
A practical way to use the October–December 2026 categories
The active fourth-quarter categories are restaurants, entertainment and utilities. Because the category decision depends on the merchant’s MCC, use the list as a planning guide rather than a promise about a particular business.
Restaurants
Pay the restaurant directly with the activated account when possible, and retain the receipt. A restaurant-branded purchase processed through a separate ordering service or marketplace may be classified differently from a direct restaurant transaction. If you are close to the quarterly cap, record the purchase only after it posts and you can verify its classification.
Entertainment
Entertainment businesses can use different processing codes for admissions, merchandise, food or other services. Check the transaction description and avoid assuming that every charge made at an entertainment venue belongs to the entertainment category.

Utilities may be billed directly by the provider or through a payment intermediary. Direct billing gives you a clearer record of the merchant that submitted the charge, but it still does not guarantee a qualifying MCC. Review the posted transaction rather than relying only on the provider’s name.
Rank #4
Use the categories without overspending
Do not create unnecessary purchases merely to reach the $75 maximum. The 5% benefit is limited to eligible spending you would otherwise make, and a transaction that fails the coding or timing rules does not become eligible because it was intended to fill the allowance.
What to document for each questionable charge
Save the receipt or order confirmation, the merchant name as it appears on the account, the amount, the transaction date and whether a wallet or marketplace handled payment. For an online order, also keep the shipping or fulfillment date if it is shown. These details let you distinguish an activation problem from a date, cap or classification problem.
Do not rely solely on a business’s public description. A merchant can operate several lines of business or use different processors, so two charges from the same brand may not receive identical classifications. Comparing the actual posted descriptions is more useful than assuming all locations or payment links work the same way.

The quarter was never activated
Check the account’s activation status first. Discover requires activation every quarter, so enrollment in the previous quarter cannot substitute for a current confirmation. If the account does not show activation, call Discover and ask whether the quarter can still be enrolled under the offer’s terms.
The merchant used a different MCC
Compare the merchant type with the transaction’s classification and ask Discover to review the coding if the result seems inconsistent. The receipt’s product description alone is not enough to establish eligibility, and Discover cannot assign the merchant’s code itself.
A wallet or intermediary supplied insufficient details
Identify whether the charge was submitted by the wallet, marketplace or payment service rather than the underlying merchant. For future purchases, use a payment path that clearly identifies the qualifying merchant when practical; this is a risk-reduction step, not a guarantee.
The transaction landed in another quarter
Check the posted or merchant-supplied transaction date, especially for an online order near September 30, December 31 or another quarter boundary. A shipping date can move the purchase into the next period.
The quarterly allowance was exhausted
Add the qualifying category purchases posted during the quarter. Once the $1,500 limit is used, later category spending should not be counted toward the 5% maximum.

The reward is still within the posting window
If the transaction otherwise appears eligible, allow the two-billing-period window described in the cardmember agreement. Contact Discover after that period with complete transaction details rather than disputing a charge solely because the reward has not posted yet.
Quarter-change checklist
- Read the new quarter’s official category list and date range.
- Sign in to the app or website and activate the offer, or call 1-800-DISCOVER.
- Confirm that your Discover it or Discover More account is open and in good standing.
- Write down the $1,500 category allowance and start a running total.
- Favor direct merchant payments when a wallet or intermediary could hide the MCC.
- Plan online purchases early enough to account for a possible shipping-based transaction date.
- Review reward activity and allow up to two billing periods for posting.

The published fourth-quarter categories are restaurants, entertainment and utilities, effective October 1 through December 31, 2026.
How much can I earn from the 5% bonus?
The offer applies to up to $1,500 in eligible category purchases during the quarter, for a stated maximum of $75 in 5% Cashback Bonus. The allowance is shared across the quarter’s listed categories.
Why did a restaurant, entertainment or utility purchase fail to earn 5%?
Eligibility depends on the merchant category code supplied with the transaction, not only on what you bought or what the receipt says. A wallet, marketplace or other intermediary may also provide insufficient details or a nonqualifying code.
Does an online purchase made on December 31 count for the fourth quarter?
Not necessarily. Discover notes that the merchant may use the date an item ships as the transaction date. If it ships in January, the charge may fall outside the October–December quarter.
When should my Cashback Bonus post?
Discover’s cardmember agreement says rewards are generally added within two billing periods. Check activation, the transaction date, the $1,500 allowance and the merchant classification before contacting Discover about a delay.
Can purchases outside the United States earn this quarterly bonus?
The offer applies to purchases from merchants in the United States. A website’s branding, currency or appearance does not by itself establish that the transaction will be treated as a qualifying U.S. merchant purchase.
The Bottom Line
For October 1–December 31, 2026, activate Discover’s restaurants, entertainment and utilities offer through the app, website or 1-800-DISCOVER. Use an eligible Discover it or Discover More account, track the shared $1,500 quarterly category limit, and remember that the merchant’s MCC, payment route and transaction date determine whether a charge earns 5%.
