How to Activate an Existing UAN and Use It With Your EPF Member ID

To activate an existing Universal Account Number (UAN), use the official UMANG app: EPFO Services → UAN Services Through Face Auth → UAN Activation. Keep your UAN, EPF Member ID, Aadhaar, and Aadhaar-linked mobile ready. The current EPFO member portal says its own UAN-activation facility has been discontinued, so older instructions that tell you to use an “Activate UAN” button on the website are no longer the current process.

What “link your UAN to your EPF Member ID” means

Your UAN is the permanent account number used to bring together your EPF records from different employers. An EPF Member ID is the identifier for a particular employment record under that UAN. The Member ID is not a replacement for the UAN, and activating an existing UAN is not the same as applying for a new UAN.

For an existing UAN, the current process is an activation step. EPFO’s member information says that, after activation, the UAN becomes your login ID for member services. The Member ID is an identifier you should have available so that you can identify the correct EPF record during the process or when checking your account. There is no separate purchase, paid “linking” service, or third-party registration required to connect the record.

If you have never been issued a UAN, use the separate UAN-allotment process instead. The UMANG service distinguishes UAN Activation for an existing UAN from UAN Allotment and Activation for someone who does not already have one.

Why the terms are easy to confuse

An employer’s EPF record and your UAN are related but different identifiers. A Member ID points to one employment record, while the UAN is the account-level login used across member services. When you change jobs, another Member ID can be associated with the same UAN. That is why a request to “link the UAN to the PF account” usually means activating the already-issued UAN and then checking the relevant Member ID under it, not opening a second account.

If an employer gives you a Member ID but you already have a UAN, do not create another UAN to match the new record. Keep the existing UAN available and use the official member-service process. Creating duplicate UANs can make it harder to identify which record should be used, whereas the activation flow is intended for an existing number.

What to prepare before opening UMANG

Your UAN and EPF Member ID

Have the existing UAN and the relevant EPF Member ID in front of you. EPFO’s member FAQ identifies both as useful information for activation. If you have worked for more than one employer, check which Member ID you are trying to identify before starting. Enter the UAN exactly as issued, without substituting an establishment number or an unrelated payroll reference.

Aadhaar and the Aadhaar-linked mobile number

The official UMANG service information lists a valid Aadhaar number and access to the mobile number linked to that Aadhaar for one-time-password (OTP) verification. Keep the phone available throughout the process. An OTP sent to a different number will not complete the Aadhaar verification step. If you recently changed your mobile number, resolve that Aadhaar linkage issue through the appropriate official channel rather than trying to bypass the verification.

Face-authentication support

The UMANG flow may require the Aadhaar Face RD app for face authentication. Install it when UMANG prompts you, and allow the permissions needed for the authentication screen. The exact screen sequence can change as the app is updated, but the service route remains the important part: EPFO Services, then UAN Services Through Face Auth, then UAN Activation.

A secure setup

  • Use the official UMANG app and the official EPFO member services channel.
  • Use your own phone and a private network where possible.
  • Do not give your UAN password, OTP, Aadhaar details, PAN details, or bank information to a caller or an unverified agent.
  • Do not pay anyone merely to activate a UAN.
  • Keep the phone charged and avoid closing UMANG while it hands off to face authentication.

Have the information ready before you begin because the activation request may move between UMANG, the OTP screen, and the face-authentication component. Keeping those details together reduces the risk of selecting the wrong Member ID or abandoning the process midway.

How to activate an existing UAN in UMANG

  1. Install or open UMANG. Use the official UMANG application on your phone. Sign in or complete any initial app setup that UMANG requests.
  2. Open EPFO Services. From the UMANG service list, select EPFO Services rather than a general Aadhaar or unrelated government service.
  3. Open UAN Services Through Face Auth. Select the option with that exact service name. This is the route EPFO currently identifies for UAN activation through UMANG.
  4. Select UAN Activation. Choose UAN Activation for a UAN that has already been issued to you. Do not select UAN Allotment and Activation unless you do not have a UAN and are applying for one.
  5. Enter the requested details. Provide the UAN and other identifying information requested by the app. Keep the EPF Member ID available if the service asks you to identify the associated record.
  6. Complete Aadhaar OTP verification. Wait for the OTP on the mobile number linked to your Aadhaar, enter it in the app, and continue. If the OTP does not arrive, use the troubleshooting steps below rather than repeatedly submitting incorrect codes.
  7. Complete face authentication if prompted. Follow UMANG’s instructions and use the Aadhaar Face RD app when the authentication hand-off appears. Position your face as instructed and allow the app to finish the verification.
  8. Confirm the result. Wait for the success or failure message in UMANG. Keep any on-screen reference or confirmation information until you have successfully signed in to EPFO member services.
  9. Sign in with the activated UAN. After activation, use the UAN as your login ID for EPFO member services, as described in EPFO’s member FAQ. Your Member ID remains the identifier for the particular EPF employment record; it does not become a second login account.

Do not start a new UAN simply because the old portal menu is missing. The current route is designed to activate the UAN you already have.

What a successful completion should establish

The immediate objective is an activation result in UMANG and the ability to use the UAN as the member-services login ID. It is sensible to sign in afterward and check that the expected Member ID or previous Member IDs are visible. This check confirms that you are looking at the intended EPF record before you use any available KYC, transfer-claim, or personal-detail function.

Activation is not a separate transfer request. It does not by itself move a balance, change employment details, or replace a Member ID. Those are distinct member-service activities that may be available after login, subject to the account and the current interface.

Why you cannot find “Activate UAN” on the EPFO website

The live EPFO member portal displays the notice: “The facility for UAN Activation through this portal has been discontinued.” It also directs members to choose “UAN Activation” under “UAN Services Through Face Auth” and follow the instructions. That is why a search result or an older screenshot can show a website button that is no longer available.

Older EPFO material described a portal-based flow in which a member could enter a UAN, Member ID, Aadhaar, or PAN, provide personal details, and authorize the request with an OTP. A 2024 EPFO circular also describes that former portal process. Those documents explain why conflicting instructions remain online, but they do not override the current portal notice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the age of the instruction as a warning sign. If it tells you to open the EPFO member portal and select an “Activate UAN” option there, it describes the legacy flow. For an existing UAN, begin in UMANG instead.

Current route versus legacy wording

The difference is a change in channel, not a reason to obtain a new number. Current instructions identify UMANG, the face-authentication service, Aadhaar OTP access, and the existing UAN. Legacy instructions identify a website menu and may list several identity options. When the two conflict, follow the live portal notice and the current UMANG menu. A website article that has not been updated may still be accurate about what the former screen looked like while being wrong about where activation is performed now.

What activation changes after you finish

Activation establishes the UAN as your member-services login ID. It does not create a second EPF account and does not erase the Member ID associated with an employer. Once you can sign in, confirm that the member record you expect is visible before attempting a transfer or profile change.

EPFO’s older member FAQ lists the following member services for an activated account:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Downloading or viewing the EPF passbook.
  • Downloading the UAN card.
  • Viewing previous Member IDs associated with the UAN.
  • Entering or updating KYC details through the available member-service functions.
  • Checking eligibility for an online transfer claim.
  • Editing personal details where the service permits it.

These are services identified in that FAQ; labels, availability, and the exact interface may change. Activation alone should not be treated as confirmation that every listed function is currently available for every member or every claim.

What to check after logging in

  • Confirm that the UAN you used is the one you intended to activate.
  • Look for the expected current or previous Member ID.
  • Use only the member-service option you actually need; activation is not the same as filing a transfer claim or changing KYC.
  • If a record is missing, note the exact screen and contact the official helpdesk rather than creating another UAN.

Troubleshooting activation problems

The OTP never arrives

  • Confirm that the mobile number receiving the message is the one linked to your Aadhaar.
  • Check mobile coverage, SMS blocking, and your phone’s message storage.
  • Wait for the app’s resend timer before requesting another OTP.
  • Enter only the newest OTP if several messages arrive.

If the number linked to Aadhaar is no longer active, the UMANG verification cannot be completed with a different number. Resolve the Aadhaar-mobile-number issue through the appropriate official channel before trying again.

Face authentication fails

  • Install or update the Aadhaar Face RD app when UMANG requests it.
  • Grant the camera and other permissions required by the authentication screen.
  • Use even lighting, remove anything that obscures your face, and hold the phone steady.
  • Follow the live prompts rather than closing UMANG during the hand-off to face authentication.

If the app returns you to UMANG without a result, reopen the service and start the authentication sequence again. Avoid switching to an unverified website that promises to bypass face authentication.

The UAN or Member ID is rejected

Recheck each digit and make sure you are using the UAN that was actually issued to you, not an employer’s establishment number or a different Member ID. If you have multiple employment records, use the Member ID associated with the record you are trying to identify. Do not request a new UAN simply to work around a typing error or a missing record.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The old website instructions do not match your screen

That mismatch is expected if the instructions describe portal activation. EPFO has discontinued activation through the member portal and moved the existing-UAN flow to UMANG. Return to the UMANG path instead of searching for a hidden website button.

The process still will not complete

Check the Aadhaar-linked mobile and face-authentication requirements first. If the service continues to fail, EPFO lists 14470 as its helpdesk number. Use the official help channel and describe the exact UMANG step at which the failure occurs.

You are unsure whether you already have a UAN

Do not choose UAN Allotment and Activation merely because you cannot find an old login. First check your employment records, messages, or documents for the UAN and Member ID supplied by EPFO or an employer. The two UMANG choices serve different situations: activation is for an existing UAN, while allotment and activation is for someone who does not already have one.

Security rules while activating or using your UAN

EPFO warns members to protect their UAN and password credentials. Treat an unsolicited call, text message, email, or social-media message asking for an OTP, password, Aadhaar, PAN, or bank details as suspicious. EPFO also warns against demands for money in exchange for help with member services.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Enter credentials only in the official EPFO member service or UMANG app.
  • Never disclose an OTP, even if the caller claims to be from EPFO, a bank, or your employer.
  • Do not share your password with an employer, agent, friend, or family member.
  • Do not install an unknown remote-access app at someone else’s request.
  • Close the session when you finish on a shared device.

Activation is an official self-service process. A third party cannot make it legitimate by charging a fee or requesting your authentication code. If someone says payment is required to “link” a UAN to a Member ID, stop and use UMANG or the official EPFO help channel instead.

Quick checklist

  • You already have a UAN and are not applying for a new one.
  • Your UAN and relevant EPF Member ID are available.
  • Your Aadhaar number is valid.
  • You can receive an OTP on the Aadhaar-linked mobile number.
  • The Aadhaar Face RD app is installed if UMANG asks for it.
  • You selected EPFO Services → UAN Services Through Face Auth → UAN Activation.
  • You used the activated UAN as the login ID after receiving a successful result.
  • You checked that the expected Member ID appears after signing in.
  • You contacted EPFO at 14470 if the official flow still failed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I activate my existing UAN?

Open the official UMANG app and select EPFO Services → UAN Services Through Face Auth → UAN Activation. Enter the requested UAN and identifying details, complete OTP verification on the mobile linked to your Aadhaar, and complete face authentication if prompted. After a successful result, use the UAN as your EPFO member-services login ID.

How do I link my UAN to my PF account or Member ID?

For an existing UAN, there is no separate paid linking service. Keep the UAN and the relevant EPF Member ID ready during activation, then sign in with the activated UAN and check the associated record. The UAN is the account-level login; the Member ID identifies a particular employment record.

Can I activate my UAN using only my Member ID?

The Member ID is useful information, but the current UMANG activation route also requires Aadhaar-based verification, including access to the Aadhaar-linked mobile for an OTP and face authentication when requested. Have both the UAN and Member ID available rather than treating the Member ID as a replacement for the UAN.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why can’t I activate my UAN on the EPFO website?

The live EPFO member portal states that its UAN Activation facility has been discontinued. It directs members to use UMANG and choose UAN Activation under UAN Services Through Face Auth. Website instructions showing an Activate UAN button describe the former portal process.

What is the difference between UAN Activation and UAN Allotment and Activation?

Choose UAN Activation when EPFO has already issued you a UAN. UAN Allotment and Activation is the separate UMANG service for someone who does not already have a UAN. If you are unsure, verify your existing employment records before applying for another number.

What if my Aadhaar-linked mobile number is different or inactive?

The OTP must reach the mobile number linked to your Aadhaar. A different number will not complete the verification. Resolve the Aadhaar-mobile linkage issue through the appropriate official channel before retrying the UMANG activation flow.

What should I do if face authentication fails?

Install or update the Aadhaar Face RD app when UMANG requests it, grant the required permissions, use even lighting, keep your face unobstructed, and follow the live prompts. If the service still fails, retry from the official UMANG route and contact EPFO at 14470 rather than using an unverified bypass service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What can I use after UAN activation?

EPFO’s member FAQ lists services such as viewing or downloading the passbook, downloading the UAN card, viewing previous Member IDs, entering KYC details, checking online transfer-claim eligibility, and editing personal details where permitted. Availability and labels can change, so confirm what is shown after you sign in.

Does activation transfer my EPF balance or create a new account?

No. Activation establishes the UAN as your member-services login ID. It does not itself transfer a balance, erase a Member ID, or create a second EPF account. Transfer, KYC, and profile actions are separate services that may be available after login.

Do I have to pay an agent to activate or link my UAN?

No. EPFO describes this as an official self-service process through UMANG and warns members about money requests and credential theft. Do not pay a third party merely to activate a UAN, and never disclose an OTP, password, Aadhaar, PAN, or bank details to an unsolicited caller.

The Bottom Line

For an existing UAN, activate it in UMANG through EPFO Services → UAN Services Through Face Auth → UAN Activation. Keep your UAN, EPF Member ID, valid Aadhaar, and Aadhaar-linked mobile ready, and use the Aadhaar Face RD app if prompted. The EPFO website’s old activation button has been discontinued. After UMANG confirms activation, sign in with the UAN and verify the expected Member ID. For unresolved failures, use EPFO’s helpdesk at 14470, and never pay or share credentials with an unverified intermediary.
