To open a .bitcoin or .wallet address, use a browser with a Web3 domain resolver enabled, then enter the complete name in the address bar. Brave documents support for both suffixes and provides Web3 settings on desktop, Android, and iOS. A domain registration by itself is not enough: the owner must also publish a website record, such as DNS information for a conventional site or an IPFS content identifier for distributed hosting.
What you need before opening a .bitcoin or .wallet address
Three pieces have to line up:
- A resolver that recognizes the suffix. Blockchain top-level domains are not part of the conventional DNS namespace used by most browsers. Brave’s maintained Web3 TLD documentation lists
.bitcoinand.walletamong the suffixes it supports. It also notes that some Web3 TLDs may be excluded for security, namespace-conflict, or other reasons. - Web3 resolution enabled in the browser. In Brave, the feature is configurable rather than automatically active in every installation.
- Records published for the name. The owner must point the name to a conventional web server or to distributed content. A purchased or registered name with no records can still fail to display a website.
These requirements are resolver-specific. Support documented by Brave does not mean that every browser, search engine, mobile webview, or ordinary DNS service will resolve the same name.

Open a blockchain domain in Brave on a computer
- Open Brave on your desktop or laptop.
- Enter
brave://settings/web3in the address bar and press Enter. - Find the setting for Unstoppable Domains resolution. Brave documents three choices: Ask, Disabled, and Enabled.
- Choose Enabled if you want supported Web3 names to resolve automatically. Choose Ask if you prefer a prompt each time Brave detects a supported domain. Leave it disabled when you do not want Brave to perform Web3 lookups.
- Type the full address, including its suffix, into the address bar. For example, enter a complete name ending in
.bitcoinor.wallet, not only the label before the dot.
The Brave Web3 TLD documentation was edited January 26, 2026. Labels can change as browser releases evolve, so if a setting is missing, open Brave’s current Web3 settings page and check the installed version rather than assuming the feature was removed.

| Setting | What happens | When it is useful |
|---|---|---|
| Ask | Brave prompts when a visit involves a supported blockchain suffix; you decide whether to resolve it. | Testing names while retaining a per-site choice. |
| Disabled | Brave does not use its documented Web3 resolution path for these visits. | Preventing Web3 lookups or avoiding unexpected prompts. |
| Enabled | Brave uses its configured resolution provider for supported Web3 domains. | Regularly visiting blockchain domains. |
Open a .bitcoin or .wallet address on Android
- Open the Brave app.
- Open the browser menu and select Settings.
- Open Shields and privacy.
- Locate the Web3 or Unstoppable Domains resolution controls and select the desired behavior, such as Ask or Enabled.
- Return to the address bar and enter the complete blockchain domain.
Android menus can move between app versions. If you do not see the control under Shields and privacy, use the settings search field for “Web3” or “Unstoppable” and confirm that the app is up to date.

- Open Brave for iOS.
- Open Settings in the browser.
- Select Web3.
- Turn on the supported-domain resolution option, or choose the prompt-based behavior if that is offered in your version.
- Enter the full
.bitcoinor.walletaddress in Brave’s address bar.
Brave’s iOS path is separate from the desktop and Android paths. If the Web3 panel is not present, check the current iOS release and the browser’s own help documentation; do not assume that an extension designed for desktop Chromium can be installed on iOS.
Why a registered blockchain domain may show nothing
Registration and website publishing are different actions. Blockchain domain records are key-value data associated with the name. The records can contain payment addresses, website destinations, or distributed-content identifiers, and they are not automatically validated at the smart-contract level. The owner must configure a usable destination.
DNS records for a conventional website
A name can contain records such as dns.A or dns.CNAME. In that arrangement, the resolver obtains the target host and the browser requests the site through familiar DNS and HTTP mechanisms. The server still needs to be configured to answer for that hostname, and HTTPS certificates, redirects, and application settings must be correct.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
IPFS or another distributed-content record
A distributed-web record can contain an IPFS content identifier, represented in the documentation by dweb.ipfs.hash. The resolver obtains the content hash, and the browser retrieves the content through the related distributed protocol or through a gateway that can fetch it. A valid hash does not guarantee that every gateway currently has the content available.
Payment records are not website records
Blockchain names can also store cryptocurrency address records. Those records may help someone send a payment, but they do not tell a browser where to fetch HTML, images, scripts, or other site files. Seeing a payment address associated with a name is therefore not evidence that the name hosts a website.

How Brave resolves a Web3 top-level domain
Brave describes a resolution flow in which the browser uses an RPC service to query the underlying blockchain for the domain’s records. Brave says the request passes through a Brave-operated anonymous proxy before it reaches the RPC provider, so the provider cannot link the user’s IP address to the requested domain. That is Brave’s description of its design, not an independent privacy audit.
After the records are obtained, Brave follows the type of destination published for the name:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- A DNS destination leads to a conventional hostname and an HTTP or HTTPS request.
- An IPFS destination leads to retrieval of content identified by the hash, either directly through a compatible protocol or through a gateway.
- A name with only payment information has no website destination to load.
Because the process depends on a resolver and an RPC path, changing browsers or disabling Web3 settings can change the result even when the blockchain record itself has not changed.
Direct browser resolution versus a gateway
A gateway translates blockchain-domain information into methods that ordinary web infrastructure understands. Unstoppable Domains’ documentation describes gateway access as a way to make resolution easier through familiar DNS and HTTP. The convenience comes with a trade-off.
| Approach | Resolution path | Setup effort | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brave Web3 resolution | Brave queries blockchain-backed records through its configured RPC route. | Change a browser setting. | Availability and behavior depend on Brave’s supported TLD list and provider configuration. |
| Third-party gateway | A gateway converts the name or distributed-content reference into DNS/HTTP access. | Usually low for the visitor. | The gateway operator becomes an intermediary and reduces decentralization. |
| Self-hosted gateway | Your own gateway performs the translation and content retrieval. | High; you operate and maintain the service. | More control, but substantially more technical complexity and responsibility. |
A gateway can be appropriate when a visitor uses a browser with no native Web3 resolver, but it does not remove the need for valid records or available content. For privacy-sensitive visits, consider which intermediary can observe requests and how the gateway is operated.

Troubleshoot a failed lookup
1. Confirm the exact name
Check spelling, punctuation, and the suffix. Enter the complete domain in the address bar, including .bitcoin or .wallet. A search result or a shortened label may lead to a conventional web search instead of a resolver lookup.
2. Check that the suffix is supported
Brave’s list explicitly includes .bitcoin and .wallet, but it does not promise support for every nonstandard suffix. If you are using another browser, look for that browser’s own current Web3 documentation; do not infer support from Brave’s list.
3. Verify the Web3 setting
On desktop, revisit brave://settings/web3. On Android, check Settings > Shields and privacy. On iOS, check Settings > Web3. Make sure the feature is not set to Disabled, and respond to an Ask prompt when you intend to resolve the name.
4. Determine whether the owner published a website record
A name can be registered without a DNS record, an IPFS hash, or any other web destination. If the owner controls the domain, ask them to verify records such as dns.A, dns.CNAME, or dweb.ipfs.hash, depending on the intended hosting method.
5. Check the destination itself
For DNS hosting, confirm that the target server is online, answers for the hostname, and has a valid HTTPS configuration when secure access is expected. For IPFS, confirm that the content identifier is correct and that the content is retrievable through the selected protocol or gateway.

6. Consider gateway dependence
If the name works only through a particular gateway, the gateway may be unavailable, rate-limiting requests, or unable to retrieve the distributed content. Try the resolver’s documented route or another trusted gateway rather than installing an unverified extension or changing to a random DNS server.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Security and privacy precautions
- Verify the destination before entering credentials. A blockchain suffix does not prove that a site is operated by the person or organization you expect.
- Check the record type. Payment-address records and website records serve different purposes. Do not send funds merely because a name appears in a browser.
- Use HTTPS when available. A DNS record can point to a normal web server, but encryption and certificate validation still matter.
- Keep the resolver choice explicit. Ask mode gives you a prompt; Enabled mode is more convenient but may make supported names resolve without an additional decision.
- Be cautious with extensions. Unstoppable Domains advertises browser extensions and a Chromium-based browser, but availability can vary by store and platform. Use the browser project’s current documentation and official distribution channels, and avoid unverified add-ons.
- Understand the privacy claim’s scope. Brave says its anonymous-proxy layer prevents the RPC provider from linking your IP address to the requested domain. That statement describes Brave’s architecture; it does not establish that every gateway, extension, or external site provides the same protection.
What domain owners must configure
If you own the name and want visitors to see a site, choose the hosting model first.
Conventional DNS and HTTP hosting
- Publish the appropriate DNS record, such as an A record for an IP address or a CNAME for another hostname.
- Configure the web server to recognize the blockchain domain as a host name.
- Install and renew a certificate for HTTPS if the site is intended to be accessed securely.
- Test the site through the resolver and through any gateway you plan to support.
Distributed hosting with IPFS
- Upload the site files to an IPFS-capable pinning or hosting service, or operate your own node.
- Record the resulting content identifier in the domain’s distributed-web field, represented in the documentation by
dweb.ipfs.hash. - Ensure that the content remains pinned or otherwise available. A hash identifies content; it does not by itself guarantee continuing availability.
- Provide a compatible retrieval method or gateway for visitors whose browsers do not fetch IPFS content directly.
Test records after publishing and whenever content or hosting changes. A typo in a key-value record can make a valid registration appear broken.
Browser support beyond Brave
The documented behavior in this guide is Brave-specific. Some other browsers may offer extensions, built-in resolvers, or gateway integrations, while others treat .bitcoin and .wallet as ordinary text or send the query to a search engine. Support can also differ between desktop, Android, and iOS editions.

Common misconceptions
“The domain is on a blockchain, so every browser should open it.”
Blockchain registration does not alter the conventional DNS root. A browser needs a resolver, extension, or gateway that knows how to interpret the namespace.
“A successful name lookup proves the site is authentic.”
Resolution proves only that a record was found and a destination was supplied. It does not verify ownership claims, business identity, safety of downloads, or legitimacy of a payment request.
“An IPFS hash is the same as a normal web address.”
An IPFS hash identifies content rather than a particular server. Retrieval depends on nodes, pinning, protocol support, or a gateway, so availability and performance can differ from a conventional website.
Recommended Free Tools
“Changing DNS servers will fix every failure.”
Random DNS changes do not add blockchain-domain support to a browser and can introduce security or privacy risks. First verify the resolver setting, TLD support, and the domain’s records.
Choosing the practical route
- You only need to visit a few supported names: enable Brave’s Web3 resolution and use Ask mode if you want a confirmation prompt.
- You visit supported names frequently: Enabled mode removes repeated prompts, provided you accept Brave’s documented resolution path.
- You need to share a site with people using ordinary browsers: provide a conventional DNS/HTTPS address as well, or document a reputable gateway.
- You operate distributed content: publish the IPFS identifier, maintain availability, and explain which gateway or protocol visitors should use.
- You need maximum control: a self-hosted gateway is possible, but it requires ongoing operation and adds technical overhead.
The shortest reliable workflow is therefore: use a resolver that lists the suffix, enable it in the browser, enter the full name, and confirm that the owner has published a DNS or distributed-content destination. If any one of those steps is missing, the address may not produce a website.
