To accept an AI-agent purchase with Stripe Link, give the agent a machine-readable checkout or payment endpoint, then require the customer to approve each spend request in the Link wallet. After approval, Stripe supplies a narrowly scoped, one-time payment credential—either a one-time-use card or a Shared Payment Token (SPT). The agent can complete the authorized transaction without seeing the customer’s underlying card or bank details.
This is different from simply publishing a Stripe Payment Link. A Payment Link is a shareable URL for a hosted checkout page. The agent-specific authorization, spending controls and credential isolation come from Link’s wallet-for-agents flow and the agent-ready checkout architecture around it.

How a Stripe Link purchase by an AI agent works
Agentic commerce has two participants: the software agent that finds and attempts to buy something, and the human who owns the payment method. The human remains the approver. Your integration should make that separation explicit at every stage.
- Discovery: The agent finds your products, prices, availability, delivery rules and checkout capabilities through a machine-readable catalog or agent-facing endpoint.
- Spend request: The agent submits the product, seller, amount and other order details to your checkout flow. It should not ask for or receive the customer’s stored payment credentials.
- Human approval: Link presents the customer with a clear request to approve the proposed purchase using a preferred payment method.
- Scoped credential: After approval, Stripe creates a one-time-use card or Shared Payment Token (SPT) for the authorized transaction. The scope should cover the intended seller, amount and permitted time window.
- Payment and order creation: The agent uses that temporary credential through your supported Stripe checkout surface. Your server confirms the resulting payment and creates the order only after receiving the appropriate Stripe result or event.
- Fulfillment and support: Your system returns order, delivery, cancellation and refund status to the agent while retaining the customer relationship and operational control.
Stripe describes Link’s wallet for agents as “a machine-native way to let agents make purchases on behalf of a human without sharing the underlying payment credentials.” Treat that as a permissioned transaction, not as a way to issue an unrestricted card number to an autonomous program.

What your business must provide
Stripe’s agentic-commerce model is broader than payment acceptance. It identifies four connected capabilities: discovery, fraud protection, checkout and payments. A reliable implementation addresses all four instead of exposing a payment button and hoping an agent can interpret a human page.
1. A machine-readable catalog
Publish structured information an agent can parse consistently:
- Product or service identifiers, descriptions and variants.
- Current prices, currency, billing interval and any mandatory fees.
- Inventory or capacity availability, including conditions that can change between quotation and payment.
- Shipping destinations, delivery estimates and shipping charges.
- Tax treatment and the information needed to calculate tax at checkout.
- Cancellation, return and refund rules.
- Fulfillment status values that an agent can relay to its user.
Keep this data synchronized with the same systems used by your human checkout. An agent should not be able to purchase a price or inventory state that your order system no longer honors.
2. An agent-ready checkout surface
The checkout endpoint should accept a well-defined order request and return deterministic states such as approval required, payment authorized, payment failed, inventory unavailable or fulfillment pending. Do not depend on an agent scraping visual text from a page when a structured interface is available.
Stripe identifies Stripe Directory as a registry for businesses with agent-facing endpoints and Stripe Projects as a way for software providers to expose structured products and provision services programmatically. Check the current Stripe documentation for eligibility, enrollment and exact API names before building against those surfaces; rollout details can change.
3. Merchant-side controls
You remain responsible for the commercial rules. Your integration must enforce the price, stock, tax, shipping, fulfillment, refund and customer-service policies that apply to every other order. Link authorizes a payment; it does not decide whether you can fulfill an item or whether your return policy is acceptable.
4. Operational observability
Store an internal correlation identifier for the agent request, the Link approval, the Stripe payment object and the resulting order. This lets support staff answer questions without asking the customer for card information and gives you a way to investigate duplicate attempts, partial failures and disputes.
Link wallet for agents versus a Stripe Payment Link
These products solve related but different problems. Use the following distinction when choosing your checkout design.
| Characteristic | Link wallet for agents | Stripe Payment Link |
|---|---|---|
| Primary purpose | Human-approved purchases initiated and completed by an AI agent. | Hosted checkout reached through a shareable URL. |
| How a customer starts | An agent submits a spend request; the customer approves it in Link. | A person or program opens the URL and completes the hosted checkout. |
| Credential exposure | The agent receives a one-time-use card or SPT rather than the underlying payment credentials. | The URL itself does not provide Link’s agent-specific credential-scoping behavior. |
| Reuse | The payment credential is intended for the approved, scoped transaction. | The URL can be shared and used multiple times; each visit creates a checkout session. |
| Checkout model | Agent-ready, machine-facing checkout with a separate approval step. | Stripe-hosted payment page for conventional checkout. |
| Best fit | Automated purchasing where a human sets or confirms authorization. | Invoices, campaigns, ordinary web checkout and other cases where a hosted page is sufficient. |
Stripe defines a Payment Link as “a shareable URL that will take your customers to a hosted payment page.” Payment Links can support one-time purchases and subscriptions through Checkout or Payment Links, but the URL alone does not turn an agent into an authorized buyer. If your requirement is “let an agent request a purchase while keeping my card number private,” you need the Link wallet and an agent-ready checkout flow, not merely a reusable URL.

Designing the permission and security model
The safest design treats every agent request as a capability with a narrow boundary. Before payment is attempted, record what the customer is approving and what your server will enforce.
Seller scope
Bind the authorization to your merchant account, connected account or other explicitly identified seller. Do not accept a temporary credential at an unrelated merchant endpoint, and reject requests whose seller identity differs from the approved order.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAmount scope
Show the customer the total amount and currency that will be charged, including shipping, tax and mandatory fees where known. Your server should compare the final amount with the approved amount before creating or confirming the payment. If the amount changes, pause and request a new approval rather than silently charging more.
Time scope
Give each request an expiration window appropriate to your inventory and pricing. An authorization that is no longer valid should fail closed. Never treat an old agent request as permission for a later, unrelated order.
Product and quantity scope
Associate the approval with immutable product identifiers and quantities. Replacing an item, adding an option or changing a subscription interval should require a fresh authorization unless your documented scope explicitly covers that variation.
Least-privilege credential handling
Keep the one-time card or SPT only where it is needed to finish the transaction. Do not log it, place it in an agent’s long-term memory, expose it in a customer-support dashboard or return it in an error message. The agent should receive a success, failure or pending result—not a reusable payment instrument.

Human visibility
The approval screen should identify the seller, items, amount, currency, delivery destination and any recurring commitment. Explain what happens if the order cannot be fulfilled. Stripe’s October 7, 2025 description of Link as a wallet purpose-built for agentic commerce mentions controls such as spending limits or explicit permissions; use those controls where available and make your own merchant-side limits equally clear.
Implementation sequence
The following sequence keeps payment authorization, order creation and fulfillment separate. Exact endpoint and object names can change, so map each step to the current Stripe documentation for your account and region.
- Normalize your catalog. Give every sellable item a stable identifier and expose price, currency, availability, tax, shipping, refund and fulfillment data in a format software can consume.
- Choose the checkout surface. Use a hosted Payment Link when a normal human checkout is all you need. Use Stripe’s agentic-commerce surfaces when an AI system must request authorization and complete a scoped purchase programmatically.
- Register or expose the endpoint. Make the machine-facing checkout discoverable through the applicable Stripe directory or project mechanism, if your business is eligible. Authenticate requests and return predictable, typed responses.
- Validate the request. Reprice the items, verify inventory, calculate tax and shipping, and check that the destination and customer terms are acceptable before presenting approval.
- Present the Link approval. Send the customer a spend request that states the seller, exact amount, currency, items, quantity, delivery information and expiration. Do not ask the agent to collect the customer’s underlying card details.
- Constrain the resulting credential. Use the one-time-use card or SPT only for the approved seller, amount, products and time window. Reject a second attempt or a materially changed order.
- Confirm payment server-side. Treat the browser or agent response as an instruction to check status, not as proof that funds are available. Verify the Stripe payment state on your server.
- Create the order idempotently. Use your own idempotency key or equivalent request identifier so retries cannot create duplicate orders. Persist the relationship among the agent request, approval, payment and order.
- Process Stripe events and webhooks. Update payment, refund, dispute and fulfillment state from signed webhook events or the current Stripe event mechanism. Build for duplicate, delayed and out-of-order deliveries.
- Return a useful result. Give the agent a concise status, order identifier, estimated fulfillment information and next action. For a pending or failed payment, explain whether it can retry, needs new approval or requires human support.
- Test adverse cases. Exercise price changes, sold-out inventory, expired approvals, duplicate requests, webhook delays, refunds, chargebacks and agent retries before enabling production traffic.
Checkout and order-state details that matter
Price and inventory race conditions
An agent may discover an item minutes before attempting payment. Reserve inventory only according to a rule you can enforce, and recheck both price and stock immediately before payment. If either changes, return a state that requires renewed customer approval.

Subscriptions and repeat charges
Do not infer permission for future recurring charges from a one-time agent approval. A subscription has a different duration and financial exposure. Show the billing interval and cancellation terms and use a flow that explicitly authorizes recurring billing.
Tax, shipping and address changes
Calculate the final total using the destination and tax rules that apply to the actual order. If an agent changes the address after approval, recalculate and request approval again when the total or terms change.
Refunds and cancellations
Expose machine-readable refund and cancellation states. A refund should reference the original order and payment, and the agent should be able to tell the customer whether the refund was requested, accepted, pending or completed. Your published policy remains the governing rule.
Customer identity
Link authorizes payment on behalf of a human, but your service still needs an order contact and delivery identity. Collect only the information needed for fulfillment, fraud review and legal obligations, and keep it separate from payment credentials.
Fraud, abuse and reliability controls
Automated traffic can be fast, repetitive and difficult to interpret. Add controls at the agent endpoint and at order creation.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

- Rate limits: Limit discovery, quote and checkout attempts by account, endpoint, seller and network signals. Return a retry time instead of processing an unbounded stream.
- Replay protection: Expire spend requests and reject a previously consumed approval or temporary credential.
- Amount and velocity limits: Set merchant-side limits for unusually large totals, rapid retries or many orders to one destination. These complement, rather than replace, the customer’s Link spending controls.
- Risk review: Hold suspicious orders for human review before fulfillment, even when payment authorization succeeded.
- Webhook verification: Verify event authenticity using Stripe’s current recommended method and keep processing idempotent.
- Audit trail: Record decisions, timestamps, request identifiers and order-state transitions without storing sensitive payment data.
- Dispute readiness: Retain the approved order details, fulfillment evidence and customer communications needed to investigate a dispute.
Payment success is not the same as fulfillment permission. Your risk engine can decline or delay an order under the same rules you apply to other automated or high-risk traffic.
Common failure modes and fixes
“The agent has a Payment Link, but cannot complete an authorized purchase”
A Payment Link is only a hosted-checkout URL. Add an agent-facing checkout path and a Link wallet approval step. Keep the Payment Link for ordinary human use if it remains useful.
“The amount at payment is higher than the approved amount”
Stop the transaction. Recalculate tax, shipping and discounts, explain the difference and request a new approval. Never use a temporary credential to cover an unapproved increase.
“The same order was created twice”
Implement idempotency around the agent request and payment confirmation, and make order creation conditional on a unique payment-to-order association. Treat webhook retries as normal.

“Payment succeeded but fulfillment is pending”
Return a pending state to the agent, retain the payment and order identifiers, and let your fulfillment system advance the order asynchronously. Do not tell the customer that shipment is complete merely because payment succeeded.
“The approval expired while inventory was being checked”
Invalidate the old request, release any reservation according to your inventory policy and ask the customer to approve a fresh request with current price and availability.
“A support employee can see the temporary credential in logs”
Remove credential values from logs and error payloads, rotate exposed secrets according to your incident process and restrict production access. Store references and status values instead of raw payment data.
“The integration works in one region but not another”
Do not assume global availability. Stripe’s agentic-commerce capabilities, exact APIs and eligibility can vary by account, region and rollout stage. Check the current documentation and confirm your account’s access before promising support to customers.

Choosing the right approach
| Question | Hosted Payment Link is usually suitable when… | Agent-ready Link flow is usually suitable when… |
|---|---|---|
| Who drives checkout? | A person opens a URL and completes the hosted page. | An AI agent submits a structured request for a human to approve. |
| Is temporary credential isolation required? | Not specifically; the URL is the main convenience. | Yes; the agent must not receive the underlying payment credentials. |
| How precise must approval be? | The customer reviews the hosted session directly. | The approval must be tied to seller, amount, products and time scope. |
| What integration effort is expected? | Lower, provided your normal checkout already works. | Higher: discovery, structured checkout, authorization, webhooks, risk controls and agent-facing status handling. |
| What happens after payment? | Your existing order and support process can handle the session. | Your systems must return fulfillment, refund and exception states that software can understand. |
If your only goal is to let customers pay from a link, start with a hosted Payment Link. If an AI agent must discover an item, request permission and finish the purchase without seeing card details, build the agentic-commerce path and use Link as the approval layer.
Availability, documentation and change management
Agentic commerce is evolving. The exact API names, account eligibility, regional availability and rollout status should be checked against current Stripe documentation before implementation and again before launch. Design an adapter around your internal catalog, order and fulfillment systems so a Stripe surface can change without forcing a rewrite of your business logic.
Keep a written record of the permissions your integration grants, the maximum amount and validity period you enforce, and the events that move an order from authorized to fulfilled. Review those controls whenever Stripe changes its agent-facing products or your own pricing and fulfillment rules change.
Frequently asked questions
Can Stripe Link give an AI agent a temporary card?
Stripe’s described flow can create a one-time-use card or a Shared Payment Token after the customer approves a spend request. That credential is intended for the authorized transaction; it is not a reusable copy of the customer’s underlying payment method.

Can the agent increase the order after I approve it?
Your integration should prevent that unless the new amount and terms are covered by an explicit authorization. A changed total, product, quantity, destination or recurring commitment should trigger a fresh approval.
Who handles refunds when an agent placed the order?
The merchant still owns the refund and cancellation process. Expose the resulting status to the agent, but apply the same published policy and internal controls that govern orders placed by a person.
Is every Stripe account able to accept agent purchases today?
Not necessarily. Eligibility, regional access and rollout status can change. Verify the current Stripe documentation and your account’s available agentic-commerce surfaces before committing to a launch date.
