The Foundation says monthly grants can be as high as $2,000, but that figure is a maximum rather than a guaranteed award. A social worker at a participating children’s hospital must submit the application, so the practical first step is to ask your child’s hospital social worker whether the hospital participates and which current rules and documents apply.
What the MBA Opens Doors Foundation pays for
The Foundation was established by the Mortgage Bankers Association to help families meet housing obligations during a child’s medical treatment. Its stated mission is “to help vulnerable families with critically ill or injured children stay in their homes while a child is in treatment.” The assistance is designed to reduce the pressure of a mortgage or rent payment when parents or guardians may be spending more time at the hospital, traveling for care, or taking unpaid leave.

The ongoing benefit is the Home Grant Program. It provides grants toward mortgage and rental payments. The Foundation’s current “About the Foundation” page states that grants are made monthly and can be up to $2,000. “Up to” is important: it is the published ceiling, not a promise that every family will receive $2,000 or that every applicant will be approved.
These grants address housing costs rather than medical bills, transportation, food, or general cash assistance. The public program pages do not establish a universal income limit, a complete diagnosis list, a residency rule, or a formula for calculating an award. Those details must be confirmed through the Foundation’s current mortgage or rental guidelines and the hospital social worker handling the application.

Who submits an application
Families do not apply directly on their own. The Foundation says every application must be submitted by a social worker at one of its network children’s hospitals. The application page links to the online application system and asks applicants to review the mortgage and rental guidelines.
- Ask for the hospital social-work team. Request the social worker or care coordinator assigned to your child’s treatment.
- Confirm that the hospital participates. Participation in the Foundation’s network is a key access condition; treatment at a hospital that is not on the current list may prevent an application through this program.
- Ask which guideline applies. Mortgage and rental cases may require different proof, so obtain the current version of the relevant guideline rather than relying on an old checklist.
- Gather payment records. The application page’s schedule requires proof that mortgage or rent payments are current through the specified prior month. Your social worker can tell you which statement, receipt, ledger, or other record the system accepts.
- Let the social worker submit the online application. Ask when the submission is expected and how the hospital will communicate questions or a decision.
Use the current application instructions at MBA Opens Doors Foundation: Apply for a Grant. Because the Foundation can update its schedule and guidelines, treat the page and your social worker’s instructions as controlling.

If your child is being treated elsewhere, ask that hospital’s social-work department whether it has a current relationship with the Foundation or can identify another housing-assistance resource. Do not assume that a nearby affiliate or a hospital with a similar name is automatically included.
How the monthly schedule works
The Foundation’s application page publishes a monthly submission-and-award schedule. For each cycle, the applicant must provide proof of mortgage or rent payments current through the listed prior month, and the page gives an award date on the first day of a later month. The exact dates and guideline documents may be revised.
That schedule should be used for planning, not as a guaranteed payment date. A social worker can confirm the next available cycle, whether your payment record meets the current-month cutoff, and what happens if a document is missing. Ask these questions before submitting:
- Which month’s mortgage or rent payment must be documented?
- Does “current” mean paid by the due date, posted by the lender or landlord, or shown on a particular statement?
- What is the hospital’s internal deadline before the Foundation’s online deadline?
- How will you be notified if the Foundation requests clarification?
- What should you do if your payment is late, in a grace period, or subject to a documented hardship?
The public pages establish the application channel and payment-proof requirement but do not publish a complete approval timeline or an award-calculation formula. Get those details from the current guideline and the submitting social worker.

What is established—and what still needs confirmation
The following points are supported by the Foundation’s public program information:
- The benefit is housing-payment assistance for a mortgage or rent.
- Monthly grants may be as high as $2,000.
- A social worker at a participating children’s hospital must submit the application.
- The online process includes mortgage or rental guidelines and proof-of-payment requirements.
- The hospital network is limited to participating facilities listed by the Foundation.
The public pages do not, by themselves, establish every condition that may affect an individual case. They do not provide a single nationwide income threshold, a complete list of qualifying illnesses or injuries, a universal residency requirement, a guaranteed number of months of support, or a promise that a particular application will be approved. A family should not infer any of those rules from the $2,000 maximum.
Home Grant Program versus the separate wildfire relief initiative
In January 2025, the Foundation announced a separate disaster-relief initiative with an additional $100,000 for enhanced mortgage and rental assistance. That effort was aimed at families affected by Southern California wildfires whose child was receiving treatment at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. Its published guidelines contain facility-specific requirements, age and medical certification requirements, and conditions tied to wildfire impact.

How the Foundation has grown
The Foundation says the MBA launched it in October 2011 with $50,000 in seed funding. It received 501(c)(3) status in early 2012 and began making grants. Through its initial relationship with Children’s National Medical System, the Foundation reports that 37 families had received grants by the end of 2012. It also says the MBA covers the Foundation’s administrative and operational expenses.
Later MBA announcements describe a much larger reach. An MBA announcement dated June 18, 2026, reported that the Foundation had helped more than 20,000 families. A later MBA announcement dated October 7, 2026, reported more than $32 million in mortgage and rental payment assistance to nearly 21,000 families. The October announcement also reported $3,093,500 in corporate and individual donations for its 2027 fiscal-year appeal.
These are milestones reported by the MBA or Foundation, not figures independently audited in the public material available for this article. The October 7, 2026 figure is the later of the two 2026 totals and should be treated as the more current reported milestone as of that date. The June announcement attributes the statement about surpassing 20,000 families to Debra W. Still, then identified as chair of the MBA Opens Doors Foundation; check the original MBA release before using that quotation in formal fundraising or news copy.

A practical preparation checklist
Preparing the right information can make the hospital’s submission easier, although the social worker—not the family—controls the official application.

Common pitfalls and how to avoid them
Assuming the $2,000 maximum is automatic
The Foundation describes $2,000 as the maximum monthly grant. The actual amount and approval depend on the current program rules and the submitted case. Budget as though assistance is uncertain until the hospital confirms an award.
Applying without a participating hospital
The required application channel is a social worker at a network children’s hospital. Contacting the Foundation without involving a participating hospital will not substitute for that submission route.
Using an old deadline or guideline
The monthly schedule and linked documents can change. Use the live application page and ask the social worker to confirm the cycle, payment-proof period, and document version.

The Southern California wildfire initiative had narrower place, hospital, medical, and event requirements. It should not be cited as a currently open nationwide benefit.
Waiting until a payment is already delinquent
The published schedule asks for proof that payments are current through a specified prior month. Contact the social worker as soon as treatment begins or a housing-payment problem appears so there is time to document the account and meet the next cycle.
Where to start today
- Call the hospital’s social-work, case-management, or family-support department.
- Ask whether the hospital is currently a participating facility for the MBA Opens Doors Foundation.
- Request the current mortgage or rental guideline and the next submission date.
- Collect proof of payments through the month the schedule requires.
- Ask the social worker to submit the online application and explain how award decisions or follow-up requests will reach you.
The Foundation’s program can relieve one of the largest nonmedical costs facing a family during a child’s treatment, but access depends on the participating-hospital channel and current rules. Confirm every time-sensitive detail with the social worker and the Foundation’s live application page rather than relying on a past award date, hospital list, or emergency announcement.
