Chase Freedom Flex cardmembers must activate the quarterly bonus before the stated deadline. For the fourth quarter of 2026, activation is due by December 14; activated purchases in grocery stores (excluding Walmart and Target), dining, and eligible American Red Cross donations can earn 5% cash back on a shared quarterly spending limit.
The offer is useful only when you treat activation, merchant coding, submission timing and the spending cap as separate requirements. A purchase can look like groceries or dining and still earn only 1% if the merchant is excluded, coded differently, submitted after the quarter closes or made after the shared cap has been used.

How the Freedom Flex quarterly bonus works
The Freedom Flex bonus is a rotating-category offer. Chase publishes a new set of categories for each quarter, and you must activate that quarter’s offer. Activating a previous quarter does not activate the next one. The categories, exclusions, deadline and earning period are all specific to the quarter shown on Chase’s calendar.

Eligibility also depends on timing. The charge must be submitted by the last day of the quarter, not merely made by that date. A transaction that remains unsubmitted until after the quarter closes can miss the bonus even when the purchase occurred before the deadline.

Q4 2026 categories, dates and exclusions
For October 1 through December 31, 2026, Chase lists three eligible categories. Activation becomes available September 15, and the activation deadline is December 14, 2026. Chase’s Q4 2026 announcement gives the quarter-specific details.

The category names are not a guarantee that every transaction at a particular business will qualify. Chase determines eligibility from the merchant category code attached to the transaction, along with the specific exclusions and terms for the quarter.
Q4’s grocery exclusion is merchant-specific: purchases at Walmart and Target do not become eligible merely because the items are food or household supplies. Conversely, a business that looks like a restaurant, market or charity to a customer may be assigned a different code by its payment processor. The transaction’s coding, not the product description alone, determines treatment.
How to activate the 5% bonus
- Check the current calendar. Open the Freedom Flex rewards information on Chase’s website or in the cardmember rewards area and confirm the categories and deadline for the quarter you are entering. Do not rely on a prior quarter’s list.
- Choose an issuer-supported activation channel. Chase lists activation through its website, the Chase mobile app, by phone, in person, or by email. For Q4 2026, Chase’s announcement directs cardmembers to ChaseBonus.com.
- Complete the activation before the deadline. For the Q4 offer, the deadline is December 14, 2026. Activating after the deadline does not retroactively qualify earlier purchases unless Chase’s terms specifically say otherwise.
- Save evidence of activation. Keep the confirmation screen or email, or note the date and channel you used. A record helps you distinguish an activation issue from a merchant-coding or timing issue later.
- Set a reminder for the next quarter. Every quarter requires a new activation. Chase also suggests using alerts so a new category period does not pass unnoticed.
Activation is separate from making a purchase. You can activate before the quarter starts, but the purchase still has to occur in the applicable quarter, use an eligible category code, and be submitted by quarter-end.
The practical sequence is simple: identify the quarter, read its exclusions, activate through Chase, save confirmation, then plan purchases only after checking the shared cap. If you use more than one authorized channel, retain the confirmation from the channel that shows completion rather than assuming that opening the calendar page activated the offer.
How the shared $1,500 cap is calculated
The Q4 2026 maximum applies to $1,500 in combined purchases across all activated categories. It is one pool, not $1,500 for grocery stores, another $1,500 for dining, and another $1,500 for donations.

The examples assume the purchases are properly coded, the offer was activated, and the charges are submitted on time. Chase applies the 1% rate to category purchases after the combined limit is exhausted. Track the total across categories rather than monitoring each category in isolation.

The cap is a purchase cap, not a cash-back cap. At exactly $1,500 of qualifying spending, the 5% total rate produces $75. Spending beyond that amount still earns the card’s regular 1% rate when the transaction otherwise qualifies for the category, so the return on the excess is $1 for every $100 rather than $5.
For a household sharing one account, add every cardholder’s qualifying purchase to the same pool. The practical question is not “How much is left in dining?” but “How much of the $1,500 combined balance remains?” A large grocery transaction can use capacity that someone else expected to use for dining or a donation.

Merchant category coding
Chase relies on the merchant category code supplied with the transaction. A store, venue or service that appears to fit a category to a customer may be coded differently by its payment processor. The Rewards Program Agreement warns that an apparently eligible merchant or item may not receive the bonus when the assigned code does not match.
This is why the name on a storefront or the description of an item is not conclusive. A grocery purchase at an excluded merchant remains outside the Q4 grocery offer, and a dining purchase processed under another business classification may not qualify. The agreement also cautions that some third-party payment technology can cause a purchase to process under an unexpected category.
Third-party wallets, delivery services, ticketing systems, payment aggregators and other intermediaries can place their own merchant information on the charge. The applicable terms do not promise that the underlying restaurant, store or organization will control the code visible to Chase. If a transaction is important to your plan, check how similar charges have appeared in your account before committing a large share of the cap.
Submission timing
The agreement requires the charge to be submitted by the final day of the quarter. The date you tap, insert or enter the card is not the only relevant date. If the merchant submits the transaction after December 31, 2026, it may fall outside the Q4 offer even if you initiated the purchase before midnight on December 31.

For purchases near quarter-end, leave time for the merchant and its processor to submit the charge. A pending transaction is not proof that the qualifying charge has already been submitted for rewards purposes. This is especially important for online orders, delayed restaurant settlement, mailed or scheduled donations, and transactions placed close to a holiday or weekend.
How the American Red Cross donation category differs
American Red Cross donations are a Q4 2026 category only when they meet Chase’s eligibility requirements. Chase specifically directs cardmembers to make qualifying donations directly through the organization’s official channels. A donation routed through an unrelated intermediary may not be treated the same way.
Before donating, confirm that the offer is activated and that the payment route is the official channel described for the quarter. Keep the donation receipt and the transaction date with your activation record. The donation still counts toward the same $1,500 combined pool as grocery and dining purchases.

Do not assume that a donation made in someone else’s name, through a fundraising platform or through a payment processor will receive the same treatment as a direct transaction. The category instruction is quarter-specific, so follow the official route stated for Q4 rather than relying on how a prior donation was handled.

- Activate early. The Q4 calendar opens activation on September 15, before the October 1 earning period begins. Early activation removes the risk of forgetting after the quarter starts.
- List planned category spending. Estimate grocery, dining and qualifying donation amounts, then add them together. This shows how quickly your household may approach the shared limit.
- Reserve cap space deliberately. If you expect a large purchase in one category, avoid accidentally using the entire pool on smaller purchases in another category first.
- Check exclusions before paying. For Q4 grocery spending, Walmart and Target are expressly excluded. For all categories, consider how the merchant is likely to be coded and whether a third-party payment system is involved.
- Finish early enough for submission. Purchases made close to quarter-end have less time to be submitted. Earlier transactions reduce the risk created by processing delays.
- Stop treating the category rate as unlimited. Once your combined eligible total reaches $1,500, the incremental reward on further category purchases drops to 1%.
A useful planning worksheet has four columns: transaction date, merchant, expected category and amount. Add a fifth column for whether the charge has posted or remains pending. This does not override Chase’s coding decision, but it helps reveal when the household is approaching the cap or when a late-quarter transaction still needs time to settle.
How to monitor your activation and spending
- Record the date, channel and confirmation for activation.
- Keep a running total of qualifying charges from all three categories, not a separate total for each one.
- Review posted transactions for the merchant name, amount and category treatment shown in your account activity.
- Compare the total with the $1,500 pool before making additional category purchases.
- Retain receipts, donation confirmations and other transaction records until the quarter’s cash-back calculation is visible.
Monitoring is especially important when several people use the same account, when a single merchant sells multiple types of goods, or when payments pass through a third-party platform. The issuer’s category code, rather than your personal description of the purchase, controls the bonus.
If a transaction is still pending near December 31, note its amount separately from posted spending. Treat the remaining cap conservatively until the charge’s final treatment is clear; otherwise, a second purchase can unintentionally exceed the amount you expected to receive at 5%.
What to check when a purchase does not receive 5%
Activation was not completed
Verify that the current quarter was activated, not merely a previous quarter. Check the saved confirmation or the activation status in the Chase account channel you used.

Add every eligible category purchase for the quarter. If the total had already reached $1,500, the disputed transaction may correctly have earned 1% even though it was in an advertised category.
The merchant was excluded or coded differently
For Q4, Walmart and Target do not qualify as grocery stores. Other merchants can also receive a category code that does not match the visible business name or the item you bought. Third-party payment technology can contribute to that mismatch.
The charge was submitted after the quarter closed
Review the transaction’s processing or submission timing. A purchase made before the end of the quarter can still miss the bonus if the charge was not submitted by the final day.
The donation used an unapproved route
For the American Red Cross category, confirm that the payment went directly through the organization’s official channel specified by Chase. Keep the receipt in case you need to verify the route and date.

What to do next
Gather the activation confirmation, receipt, posting or processing details and any information showing how the merchant appeared in your account. Then compare the transaction with the quarter’s category description, exclusions, shared-cap balance and submission requirement. Those four checks usually identify whether the issue is activation, coding, timing or the cap.

The categories, exclusions, activation deadline and spending period are quarter-specific. When a new quarter begins, the prior list does not continue automatically, and the prior quarter’s unused capacity does not create extra capacity in the new one. Check Chase’s current calendar, activate the new offer, and start a fresh running total for the new quarter.
Do not assume that a category appearing in Q4 will return in Q1 2027 or that an excluded merchant will be treated the same way in a later period. Each quarter’s announcement and the applicable agreement control. Keep the Q4 records until the corresponding cash-back calculation is visible, then use the new quarter’s dates and rules for future planning.

In Chase’s September 15, 2026 Q4 announcement, Wittney Rachlin, General Manager of Chase Freedom, said: “Freedom is designed to help cardmembers earn more in the categories that fit their everyday lives.” The statement describes the intent of the rotating structure, but the enforceable details remain the quarter’s listed categories, exclusions, cap, activation deadline and Rewards Program Agreement.

Can a purchase made on December 31 qualify?
It can qualify only if the charge is submitted by the final day of the quarter and all other requirements are met. A purchase date alone is not sufficient if submission occurs after December 31, 2026.
Why did a restaurant or grocery purchase earn only 1%?
