How Sweep-In and Sweep-Out Work in an FD-Linked Bank Account

An FD-linked savings or current account automatically moves eligible surplus into a fixed deposit (sweep-out) and can bring money back when a debit needs it (sweep-in, reverse sweep or pull sweep). You keep using the transaction account, while the linked deposit may earn its applicable FD rate. Thresholds, timing, deposit units, withdrawal order, interest adjustment and penalties are set by each bank and account variant.

What an FD-linked account actually connects

The arrangement links an eligible savings or current account—the account used for transfers, card payments, mandates and other transactions—to one or more fixed or term deposits. The bank’s rules define how much must remain available in the operating account and when any excess can be placed into a deposit.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

You normally continue to transact from the savings or current account. If the facility is active and a qualifying debit would take the balance below the required level, the bank may redeem part of a linked deposit and credit the operating account. You generally do not have to close the entire FD manually for each qualifying debit, but no bank’s terms guarantee that every payment rail, hold, mandate or debit will trigger a sweep.

  • Sweep-out: eligible surplus leaves the operating account and is placed in a new or linked deposit.
  • Sweep-in: money comes back from a linked deposit when the operating account needs liquidity.
  • Reverse sweep and pull sweep: alternative names commonly used for sweep-in.

The feature is designed to reduce idle cash while preserving more access than a conventional FD that cannot be touched without a premature withdrawal. It is not a universal banking standard: the same label can describe materially different rules at different banks.

How sweep-out moves surplus into a deposit

1. The account reaches the bank’s trigger

A bank may define a minimum operating balance, a sweep-out threshold, or both. Once the balance satisfies the rule, the eligible amount above the retained balance can be transferred into a deposit. The trigger may be checked continuously, at a specified time, or on a schedule. Some products require an opt-in or a particular account variant before any transfer occurs.

2. The bank creates or adds to a deposit

The transferred amount is placed into a fixed or term deposit under the product’s permitted unit and tenor. A bank may create several deposits over time rather than one large deposit, which matters when a later sweep-in is needed. The deposit’s interest rate and maturity date are the terms applicable when that deposit is booked, not a guaranteed rate for the entire life of the linked account.

3. The operating account remains the spending account

After the sweep-out, the visible balance in the savings or current account can be lower, while the linked FD holds the surplus. A statement or online banking screen may show the deposit separately. Check how the bank displays available balance, lien or hold amounts and the amount eligible for a future reverse sweep.

How sweep-in returns money for a debit

1. A qualifying transaction creates a shortfall

When a debit, transfer or other qualifying transaction would leave less than the required balance, the bank can draw from a linked deposit. The exact trigger is product-specific; terms may exclude certain holds, mandates, payment methods or transactions that are processed differently from an ordinary account debit.

2. The bank redeems a permitted unit

The bank may break a deposit partly or fully, subject to its minimum sweep-in unit and deposit rules. The amount returned need not equal the debit exactly. Some products bring back a prescribed increment large enough to restore the operating balance, leaving any excess in the account until a later sweep-out.

3. The deposit’s interest treatment is applied

A reverse sweep can be treated as premature closure of the withdrawn portion. The bank may recalculate interest, pay a lower rate for the period, or impose a premature-closure charge. A deposit that has been partly redeemed may have a different remaining principal or maturity treatment. Read the account’s current terms before relying on a large payment to be funded from an FD.

Withdrawal order when several deposits are linked

Where multiple deposits exist, the bank’s order determines which one is broken first. LIFO (last in, first out) means the newest linked deposit is drawn before older deposits. Indian Bank’s Multi Option Deposit Scheme and HDFC’s described facility use LIFO under their stated terms; another product may use a different order or reserve discretion.

A simple example without assuming a bank’s threshold

Assume a bank requires an operating balance and permits surplus above that balance to be swept into deposits. Your account has more than the required amount, so the eligible surplus is placed in a new FD. Later, a debit is larger than the liquid balance. A reverse sweep then brings back an amount allowed by the product—possibly a deposit unit or other increment—so the debit can be processed. The bank may break only part of a deposit, or may close one according to its rules. This illustration does not establish a particular threshold, timing or exact redemption amount for any bank.

Which rules you must compare before enrolling

Because “auto sweep” is not standardized, compare the following terms in the account agreement and current product page:

Feature What to verify Why it matters
Eligibility and enrollment Qualifying savings/current account, opt-in requirement and any exclusions An account can carry the label but still be ineligible.
Retained balance and trigger Minimum amount kept liquid, sweep-out threshold and balance calculation Determines when money leaves and how much remains for ordinary spending.
Timing Immediate, end-of-day, scheduled or periodic transfer A scheduled sweep may not react to a balance change straight away.
Deposit creation Minimum amount, increments, permitted tenures and whether multiple FDs are created These rules affect interest, maturity dates and how much can be redeemed later.
Sweep-in unit Minimum amount returned and whether partial redemption is allowed The account may receive more than the exact debit or may not fund a small shortfall.
Withdrawal order LIFO, another sequence or bank discretion Determines which deposit loses time and interest first.
Interest and penalties Rate on the withdrawn portion, recalculation method and premature-closure charge Liquidity can cost less interest than a normal FD, but it is not cost-free.
Maturity and renewal Whether proceeds return to the account, renew as principal, or follow an instruction already recorded A maturity instruction can change where the money is available.

What named bank products show about the differences

Indian Bank Multi Option Deposit Scheme

Indian Bank’s 2025–26 Deposit Policy describes its Multi Option Deposit Scheme as attached to certain savings and current-account variants and operating above a minimum threshold. It specifies LIFO for pull sweeps. The policy also says the premature-closure penalty follows the bank’s rules in force on the date of the pull sweep. Indian Bank’s public explainer gives examples of eligible products, including SB Platinum and IND SALARY Sampoorna Plus savings accounts and specified current-account variants. Eligibility must be confirmed against the current account terms, because product lists and conditions can change.

Bank of India Current Plus

Bank of India’s Current Plus page lists parameters effective 20 May 2026. Its sweep-outs occur on a fortnightly schedule, selectable fixed-deposit tenures run from 7 to 364 days, and sweep-ins are made in ₹1 lakh multiples to meet liquidity needs in the linked current account. Those are Current Plus rules, not a general rule for all current accounts or all sweep facilities. A customer needing a smaller emergency amount should understand that a ₹1 lakh increment can leave excess cash in the operating account and may expose a larger portion of the deposit to early redemption.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

HDFC’s described facility

HDFC’s product information describes LIFO sweep-ins and states that restoration of swept funds is subject to its terms and discretion. “Restoration” should therefore not be read as an unconditional promise that every debit will be funded automatically or that the bank will restore a particular amount.

ICICI linked deposits

ICICI’s FAQ confirms that an FD can be linked to a savings or current account for sweep-in. It also notes that treatment of proceeds at maturity depends on the renewal instructions in place. Before enabling the feature, check whether your instruction sends maturity proceeds to the operating account, renews principal, renews principal plus interest, or follows another option.

Interest, premature closure and maturity consequences

Interest on the amount brought back

The portion redeemed through a sweep-in may not retain the original FD return. A bank can apply its premature-withdrawal formula, a lower rate for the actual holding period, or a charge. The remaining portion, if any, may continue under the original terms, but the bank’s method should be confirmed in writing.

Penalty timing can matter

Indian Bank explicitly ties its penalty to the rules in force on the pull-sweep date. This means the applicable charge may be the rule operating when money is withdrawn, not necessarily the rule that applied when the deposit was first created. Keep a copy of the current schedule of charges if the linked balance is significant.

Maturity and renewal instructions

At maturity, the deposit can be paid out or renewed according to the instruction attached to it. If the account has several deposits created on different dates, each may mature separately. Review renewal instructions before a large deposit reaches maturity; otherwise, money intended for spending could be rolled over, or money intended for saving could return to the operating account.

How to set up and test the facility safely

  1. Confirm eligibility: identify the exact savings or current-account variant and ask whether the facility is active by default or requires an opt-in.
  2. Record the operating balance: note the minimum retained balance and the sweep-out trigger, including how the bank treats pending transactions and holds.
  3. Read unit and tenor rules: write down the minimum deposit amount, sweep-in increment, available tenures and whether the bank creates multiple deposits.
  4. Check withdrawal economics: obtain the current premature-closure penalty, interest-recalculation method and withdrawal order.
  5. Choose maturity instructions: specify whether principal, interest or both should renew or return to the account.
  6. Test with a modest balance: after activation, observe a sweep-out and, if the bank permits, a small qualifying sweep-in. Confirm the transaction history and interest treatment before using the facility for a critical payment.
  7. Keep records: save the account terms, schedule of charges and deposit advice showing each FD’s amount, rate, date and maturity.

Common failure modes and what to do

The debit is declined even though an FD exists

The transaction may not qualify, the deposit may be locked or pledged, the available amount may be below the bank’s minimum unit, or the facility may not be enabled for that account. Contact the bank before retrying a time-sensitive payment and maintain a separate liquid buffer.

The account receives more money than expected

A unit-based sweep-in can redeem a standard increment rather than the exact shortfall. Check whether the excess will remain available for spending or be swept out again on the next scheduled cycle.

The interest credited is lower than the quoted FD rate

Look for a partial or premature redemption, the bank’s holding-period rate, and any penalty. Compare the deposit advice with the sweep-in entry; the quoted rate usually describes the deposit while it remains intact.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A deposit renews when you expected cash

Review the maturity instruction attached to that deposit. Update it before the next maturity date and ask the bank how an already renewed deposit can be redeemed.

Deposit insurance: linked accounts share the bank-level limit

The Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation (DICGC) says eligible savings, fixed, current and recurring deposits are insured up to ₹5 lakh per depositor per bank, including principal and interest. Balances are aggregated for accounts held in the same right and capacity. Therefore, a linked savings balance and FD at one bank do not create separate ₹5 lakh insurance ceilings merely because they are different account types.

The Department of Financial Services also describes the ₹5 lakh limit and says covered claims are payable within 90 days under the applicable framework. That statement does not remove the need to check DICGC’s current guide and claim conditions, especially when balances are near or above the limit. Depositors with larger sums should consider how ownership capacity and bank concentration affect their insured amount.

Do not confuse an FD sweep with a payments-bank sweep-out

An RBI circular dated 29 June 2017 covers a different arrangement for payments banks. Amounts above a payments bank’s permitted customer-balance limit may be swept into an account opened for the customer at another bank. The circular says the payments bank must not initiate debits in that other-bank account under a power of attorney or general consent. That is not the ordinary same-bank arrangement in which a savings or current account is linked to the customer’s own FD.

When the facility is useful—and when to keep cash separate

An FD link can suit a customer who regularly holds surplus above a known operating balance and wants that surplus to earn the applicable deposit rate without manually booking and breaking deposits. It is less suitable as the sole source for rent, payroll, tax payments or other transactions where a failed debit would be costly, particularly when sweep-ins are scheduled, unit-based or discretionary.

  • Keep a separate liquid reserve for payments that cannot be retried safely.
  • Use the linked FD for predictable surplus rather than money needed on a known near-term date unless the maturity and sweep rules fit that date.
  • Recheck rates, thresholds, eligibility, penalties and renewal instructions whenever the bank changes the account variant or schedule of charges.
  • Do not treat the FD balance as identical to cash: redemption can take a unit, reduce interest and trigger a penalty.

The practical test is simple: understand exactly how much stays liquid, how quickly a qualifying debit can draw from the FD, which deposit will be broken, and what that withdrawal costs. Only then can the convenience of automatic liquidity be weighed against the certainty of keeping the money in the transaction account.
