Yes—Social Security retirement benefits are adjusted automatically after you become entitled to them. The adjustment is the annual cost-of-living adjustment (COLA). For 2026, the COLA was 2.8%, and the increase began with benefits received in January 2026. Your deposited amount may not rise by exactly 2.8% because SSA recalculates the benefit, applies retirement factors and rounding rules, and may deduct Medicare premiums or other amounts.
What happens to a Social Security benefit after you claim?
After you are entitled to a retirement benefit, SSA applies any statutory COLA automatically. You do not file a new claim or request the increase. The COLA is intended to reflect changes in consumer prices and is separate from the decision about when you originally claimed.

For retirement benefits, SSA applies the COLA to your primary insurance amount (PIA), then runs the benefit calculation again. The PIA is the base amount produced by your earnings record and claiming rules. It is not necessarily the same as the amount deposited into your bank account.
The most important practical distinction is between the gross benefit calculation and your net payment. The announced percentage describes the statutory adjustment, while your final deposit can be affected by early- or delayed-retirement factors, truncation rules, Medicare Supplementary Medical Insurance (SMI) premiums, and other applicable offsets.

How SSA sets the annual COLA
The index used is CPI-W
Federal law specifies the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) as the measure for the Social Security COLA. SSA compares the average CPI-W for the third quarter of one year with the average for the third quarter of the prior comparison year. The statutory comparison, rather than a general inflation headline or a personal spending pattern, determines the percentage.
For the 2026 adjustment, SSA compared third-quarter CPI-W data from 2024 with third-quarter data from 2025. The resulting increase was 2.8%. SSA announced that determination on October 24, 2025. The fact sheet is available at SSA’s 2026 COLA Fact Sheet.
No increase in the comparison means no COLA
The statute requires the comparison to show an increase before SSA can provide a COLA. If the specified third-quarter CPI-W average does not rise, SSA provides no COLA for that year. This rule means the adjustment can be zero; it does not mean the Social Security payment automatically falls under this formula.

SSA explains this requirement in Cost-of-Living Adjustment Must Be Greater Than Zero. A zero-COLA year leaves the existing benefit calculation in place rather than adding a percentage increase.

Why the rate is announced in the fall
SSA needs the third-quarter CPI-W data to complete the statutory comparison. Once those data are available, it announces the rate for the following calendar year. The 2026 rate was therefore determined in October 2025 and first appeared in benefits received in January 2026.
How the COLA is applied to a retirement benefit
SSA’s technical explanation shows why the published percentage is not a promise about an individual’s exact deposit. The process has several stages:
- Start with the PIA. SSA identifies the primary insurance amount calculated from the worker’s covered earnings.
- Apply the COLA to the PIA. The adjusted PIA is rounded down to the next lower dime under SSA’s computation rules.
- Apply retirement factors. Early-claiming reductions or delayed-retirement increases are applied as appropriate to the person’s entitlement.
- Subtract applicable offsets or deductions. One common deduction is the Medicare SMI premium; other offsets can apply in particular cases.
- Round the payable benefit. SSA truncates the resulting benefit to the next lower dollar before determining the payable amount.
SSA’s numerical example
In SSA’s example, an initial PIA of $2,108.50 receives a 2.8% COLA. The mathematical result is $2,167.538, which becomes $2,167.50 after truncation to the next lower dime. That figure illustrates the PIA step only. It is not a forecast of what every beneficiary will see in a bank account.

Why your deposit may not rise by the headline percentage
Gross benefit versus net payment
Suppose the COLA-adjusted computation increases your gross Social Security benefit. The amount that reaches your bank account can still change by a different percentage because deductions are applied after the benefit calculation. A fixed-dollar deduction can make the net increase smaller; a change in a deduction can make the deposit change more or less than the COLA-driven increase.
Retirement factors and truncation
Two people with the same announced COLA can have different results because their starting PIAs and claiming factors differ. The early- or delayed-retirement factor is part of each person’s benefit computation. Rounding at the PIA and final-benefit stages can also create a small difference from multiplying a displayed payment by the headline rate.
Medicare Part B premiums are separate
The COLA index does not set the Medicare Part B premium. Medicare premiums are determined under separate rules, so a Part B change can alter the net Social Security deposit even when the COLA percentage is unchanged. When reconciling a payment, compare the gross benefit shown in the Social Security notice with the applicable Medicare premium information. SSA discusses this distinction in its Cost-of-Living Adjustment publication.

| Item | Figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 Social Security COLA | 2.8% | The annual rate determined from the third-quarter CPI-W comparison for 2024 and 2025; it is not a permanent rate. |
| Estimated average monthly benefit for all retired workers before the adjustment | $2,015 | SSA’s population estimate before the 2026 COLA, not an individual’s forecast. |
| Estimated average monthly benefit for all retired workers after the adjustment | $2,071 | SSA’s population estimate after the 2026 COLA, not a guaranteed payment amount. |
| People expected to receive an increase | About 75 million Americans | SSA’s combined description includes Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI); it is not a retirement-only count. |
| First benefits reflecting the 2026 increase | Benefits received in January 2026 | The effective payment timing stated in SSA’s FAQ. |
The average-benefit figures are useful for understanding the scale of the adjustment, but they cannot be used to reverse-engineer your own check. Your earnings record, claiming factors, deductions, and rounding determine your amount.

What to check on the notice
- The prior and new gross benefit amounts.
- The month in which the new amount applies.
- Any listed Medicare SMI premium or other deduction.
- Whether the notice concerns Social Security retirement benefits, SSI, or another benefit type.
How to check your own increase
- Open your COLA notice. Sign in to your my Social Security account or use the paper notice SSA mailed in December.
- Identify the gross benefit. Do not begin with the bank deposit if you want to measure the COLA itself; use the benefit amount before deductions shown by SSA.
- Compare the effective months. Confirm that you are comparing the old and new amounts for the same benefit type and payment basis.
- Review deductions separately. Check Medicare SMI and any other listed offset. A deduction change can mask part of the COLA in your deposit.
- Use the announced rate only as a reasonableness check. Multiplying your old deposit by 1.028 will not necessarily reproduce the new net payment because SSA applies its full computation and rounding sequence.
- Contact SSA if the notice and payment conflict. If your bank deposit does not match the amount and effective date on the notice, ask SSA to explain the discrepancy rather than assuming the COLA was omitted.
What the COLA does not change
It does not change your original claiming decision
The COLA is an adjustment after entitlement. It does not retroactively convert an early claim into a full-retirement-age claim, remove an early-claiming reduction, or change the age at which you first claimed. Those factors remain part of the recalculated benefit.
It does not determine Medicare premiums
A Social Security COLA and a Medicare Part B premium decision come from different processes. If your net payment changes by less than expected, review the Medicare deduction rather than attributing the entire difference to the CPI-W formula.
It does not guarantee a positive adjustment every year
Because the statutory test requires an increase in the comparison CPI-W average, a year with no qualifying increase produces no COLA. The formula does not promise that benefits will rise annually.
How to interpret future COLA announcements
Always attach the year to a percentage. “2.8%” refers to the 2026 COLA determined in 2025; it is not a standing annual rate. A later year’s percentage must be calculated from that year’s required CPI-W comparison.
As of SSA’s Office of the Chief Actuary summary reviewed on October 13, 2026, 2.8% remained identified as the latest determination and the page said the next COLA would be announced in October 2026. That reviewed material did not state a 2027 rate. Do not treat an estimate or forecast as official; use SSA’s live Cost-Of-Living Adjustment (COLA) summary for the current determination.
Retirement benefits and SSI are not interchangeable
SSA often describes the number of people receiving an increase across Social Security and SSI together. Retirement benefits are calculated through the PIA and retirement-factor process described above. SSI is a separate needs-based program with its own eligibility and payment rules. Therefore, a statement about “75 million Americans” or a combined SSA announcement should not be read as describing retirement beneficiaries alone.
Bottom line for someone already claiming
Your Social Security retirement benefit is normally adjusted automatically when SSA announces a qualifying annual COLA. The statutory percentage is applied to the PIA and the benefit is recalculated; your final deposit then reflects your individual retirement factors, rounding, Medicare SMI premium, and other deductions. Use the SSA notice—not a simple percentage multiplication of your bank deposit—to determine exactly what changed.
