It seeks to track the Dow Jones U.S. Dividend 100 Index, which first applies size, liquidity and dividend-history screens, then ranks qualifying companies on four fundamental and dividend measures. The 100 highest-ranked companies enter the index, with limits on individual-stock and sector weights. SCHD’s distributions are normally quarterly, but the amount can change; neither the index rules nor Schwab’s fund materials guarantee a particular future payment.
What SCHD is designed to track
SCHD is an exchange-traded fund whose objective is to track the Dow Jones U.S. Dividend 100 Index before fees and expenses. The benchmark is designed to measure U.S. stocks with relatively high dividend yields, a consistent record of paying dividends and fundamental strength compared with peers. The index methodology, rather than a portfolio manager’s discretionary stock-picking decision, determines which companies are eligible and how they are ranked.

That distinction matters. A company can have a high current yield and still fail the initial screens, rank poorly on financial-strength measures or be excluded because it does not fit the index’s concentration limits. Conversely, a stock with a moderate yield may qualify if it combines a long payment record, stronger fundamentals and faster dividend growth.
How a company becomes eligible
The starting universe is the Dow Jones U.S. Broad Stock Market Index, with real estate investment trusts excluded. Companies must pass all of the following requirements before the ranking process begins:

These are entry requirements, not a promise that every qualifying company will be selected. Passing the screens only places a company into the candidate group for the next ranking stage.
The yield gate comes before the composite ranking
After the size, liquidity and dividend-history screens, candidates are ranked by indicated annual dividend yield. Only the top half of this yield-ranked group can continue to selection. “Indicated annual” yield is a forward-looking calculation based on the dividend rate then in effect, not the same metric as SCHD’s reported trailing-twelve-month distribution yield.
This two-stage design prevents the index from choosing solely on yield. A company must first be in the higher-yielding half of the screened universe, but it then competes on several measures of financial quality and dividend durability.

The 100 companies with the highest composite rankings are selected. Because the score combines cash-flow coverage, profitability, yield and dividend growth, a high-yield stock with weak balance-sheet or profitability measures can rank below a lower-yielding company with stronger overall characteristics.
Why current holdings can remain in the index
The methodology includes a buffer for existing constituents. A company already in the index can remain eligible to stay while it ranks among the top 200, rather than having to rank inside the top 100 every time. This reduces unnecessary turnover around the cutoff: a current holding that slips modestly may be retained, while a non-member generally must rank high enough to enter the top 100.
The buffer does not make a holding permanent. A constituent that falls outside the permitted range or fails an underlying eligibility requirement can still be removed at a later review.

Selection and weighting are separate decisions. Once the 100 companies are chosen, the index uses capped float-adjusted market-cap weighting. Larger companies receive more weight based on the portion of their shares available to public investors, but concentration limits prevent the portfolio from becoming dominated by one stock or one sector.

- Each sector is capped at 25%.
- Caps apply at index construction, the annual rebalancing and quarterly updates.
- Any excess weight created by a cap is redistributed among names that remain below their limits.
The result is not an equal-weight portfolio and not an uncapped market-cap portfolio. A company’s size influences its position, while the caps impose diversification boundaries.
How often the index changes
Weights are updated quarterly, and the methodology also provides for an annual rebalancing. Quarterly updates can change positions as prices, shares outstanding, yields and other inputs move. The annual process is the principal full review of constituents and rankings, while the buffer and caps shape how changes are implemented.
How SCHD pays distributions
Investors often call an ETF’s cash payments “dividends,” but SCHD technically makes fund distributions. The fund collects dividends and other income from its holdings, accounts for expenses and fund-level activity, and distributes the resulting amount to shareholders according to its distribution schedule. The amount is not fixed because the income received by the portfolio and the number of shares entitled to a payment can change.

Schwab’s provider page publishes distribution history, and the fund has a quarterly distribution pattern. The following 2026 amounts are historical per-share income distributions listed by Schwab; they are not a forecast of the next payment:

Schwab’s 2026 equity ETF schedule was last updated July 28, 2026. A schedule and past payments show what was declared for those dates; they do not establish the amount or timing of a future distribution. The ex-date identifies the date associated with trading without the upcoming distribution, but investors should use their brokerage’s record and payment information for account-specific posting details.

As of August 31, 2026, Schwab reported a 3.00% trailing-twelve-month distribution yield for SCHD. That figure adds the fund’s distributions over the previous 12 months and relates them to the applicable fund value under Schwab’s definition. It is a historical measure as of that date, not a guaranteed annual rate and not a forecast.
Do not confuse three different concepts:
- Indicated annual dividend yield: a stock-level input used in the index’s screening and ranking.
- Trailing-twelve-month distribution yield: SCHD’s reported 3.00% measure as of August 31, 2026, based on past fund distributions.
- Forward cash income: the amount SCHD may actually distribute in coming quarters, which can rise or fall.
Market price also affects an investor’s personal yield. If the share price changes while the distribution amount does not, the percentage yield based on the new price changes. A buyer’s yield on cost can therefore differ from the fund’s published trailing figure.

No. The index rules require a long payment record and evaluate dividend-related factors, but they do not promise that every constituent will maintain or increase its payout. Companies can reduce or suspend dividends, and the index can remove them at a later review. At the fund level, distributions vary with the dividends received from holdings, portfolio changes, expenses and other fund activity.

SCHD’s total expense ratio was 0.060% on Schwab’s fund page when accessed. Because the objective is to track the index before fees and expenses, the fund’s return can differ from the index’s return. The ETF’s market price can also trade above or below its net asset value during the day. Consequently, neither a stated yield nor the index methodology should be read as a guaranteed cash return.
A practical way to evaluate SCHD’s process
When assessing what SCHD owns or what its next distribution might be, follow this order:
- Check the index universe and screens. Ask whether a company is a U.S. Broad Stock Market Index constituent, is not a REIT, has at least 10 consecutive years of dividend payments, meets the US$500 million float-adjusted market-cap floor and meets the US$2 million liquidity threshold.
- Check the yield gate. Confirm that the company is in the top half of indicated annual dividend yields among screened candidates. A long dividend history alone is not enough.
- Check the four-factor profile. Review free cash flow relative to total debt, return on equity, indicated yield and five-year dividend growth. The composite ranking determines whether the company is among the top 100.
- Check the constituent buffer. If it is already held, a ranking within the top 200 can allow it to remain even if it is no longer in the top 100.
- Check concentration limits. Review the stock’s weight and sector exposure after the 4% and 25% caps and redistribution rules are applied.
- Check the fund’s own distribution data. Use Schwab’s dated distribution history and current fund metrics rather than extrapolating one quarter’s payment into a permanent annual rate.
Important limitations for income-focused investors
- Past payments are variable. The 2026 payments of $0.2569, $0.2525 and $0.2665 per share describe specific declarations, not a fixed quarterly coupon.
- Yield can move without a distribution change. Share-price gains lower a price-based yield; price declines raise it.
- Dividend quality is screened, not guaranteed. Financial ratios and a 10-year payment record reduce some risks but cannot eliminate business, credit or sector risk.
- Sector caps can affect exposure. A sector that contains many highly ranked companies cannot exceed 25% at the stated index-control points, so the final portfolio may differ from an unconstrained ranking.
- Fund returns are not identical to index returns. Fees, trading costs, tax effects and the difference between ETF market price and net asset value can create tracking differences.
For the latest figures, investors should verify Schwab’s current fund page, distribution history and schedule, along with the current S&P Dow Jones Indices methodology. Yields, expense disclosures, constituents, weights and distribution dates can change after the dates stated here.
