That can put some income into a higher federal marginal bracket, make a larger share of your Social Security benefits taxable, and increase Medicare Part B and Part D premiums in a later year through IRMAA. The effects are connected, but none is automatic for every retiree: account basis, filing status, deductions, benefit amounts, tax-exempt interest, Medicare year, and the size and timing of the distribution all matter.
This is general federal information, not an individual tax calculation. Use the tax year and Medicare premium year together when evaluating a withdrawal, and verify current thresholds with the IRS RMD guidance, IRS Publication 915, and Medicare’s current materials.

What an RMD adds to your taxable income
An RMD is the minimum amount that must generally be withdrawn from an applicable retirement account for a year. The IRS generally calculates it by dividing the account balance on the preceding December 31 by a distribution period from an IRS table. The exact calculation can differ by account type, beneficiary status, and other circumstances.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe withdrawal’s tax character is more important than the label “RMD.” A distribution from a traditional IRA or employer plan is generally included in income, but the entire amount is not necessarily taxable. Amounts representing basis (money that was already taxed) and distributions that qualify for specific tax-free treatment can reduce the taxable portion. Roth-account rules and inherited-account rules also differ. The IRS required minimum distributions FAQs describes these general exceptions.

Taxable RMD versus account withdrawal
- Taxable traditional-account distribution: Usually increases adjusted gross income and taxable income for the year received.
- Distribution containing basis: Only the portion that has not already been taxed is generally included in income; basis must be tracked under the applicable rules.
- Eligible tax-free amount: A qualifying exception can change how much of the withdrawal enters income.
- Additional voluntary withdrawal: Money taken above the RMD is generally subject to the same tax-character analysis and can magnify the effects described below.
Because the tax result depends on the account and the taxpayer’s history, do not multiply the gross RMD by a tax rate without first determining its taxable portion.
Will an RMD put you in a higher tax bracket?
It can, but a higher bracket does not retroactively apply to every dollar you earn. Federal income-tax brackets are marginal: each rate applies only to the slice of taxable income within that band after deductions and filing-status rules. A taxable RMD may fill the remaining space in your current bracket and move only the excess into the next one.
For tax year 2026, the IRS lists these seven federal marginal rates:
| 2026 marginal rate | What it means for an RMD |
|---|---|
| 10% | Applies to taxable income in the lowest bracket for the applicable filing status. |
| 12% | Applies to the next band of taxable income. |
| 22% | Applies to taxable income that reaches this band. |
| 24% | Applies to the next band. |
| 32% | Applies to taxable income in this band. |
| 35% | Applies to taxable income in this band. |
| 37% | Applies to taxable income in the highest listed band. |
The IRS’s 2026 rate guidance is in Internal Revenue Bulletin 2025-45. The table lists rates, not the income cutoffs; those cutoffs depend on filing status and the tax year. Your effective tax rate can be lower than your top marginal rate because income occupies several bands.

A simple marginal-bracket example
Suppose a taxpayer has $8,000 of taxable income left before the next bracket begins and receives a $20,000 fully taxable RMD. The first $8,000 uses the remaining space in the current bracket. Only the remaining $12,000 reaches the next bracket. The RMD has increased the taxpayer’s top marginal rate, but it has not changed the rate on wages, pensions, interest, or earlier taxable income that stayed in lower bands.
This example is deliberately simplified: deductions, capital gains, credits, state taxes, and the taxable share of Social Security can change the actual calculation. It illustrates why “the RMD put me in the 24% bracket” does not mean the entire distribution was taxed at 24%.
Do RMDs make Social Security taxable?
A taxable RMD can make more of your Social Security benefits taxable because it increases the “other income” used in the federal Social Security-benefit worksheet. The calculation starts with one-half of your benefits, adds other income, and includes tax-exempt interest. It then compares that combined amount with a filing-status base amount.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →| Filing situation | Base amount used in the federal benefit-tax calculation |
|---|---|
| Single, head of household, qualifying surviving spouse, and certain married-filing-separately filers | $25,000 |
| Married filing jointly | $32,000 |
| Married filing separately when spouses lived together during the year | $0 |
These figures come from IRS Publication 915 (2025). They are thresholds for the benefit-tax formula, not tax rates. Under the applicable rules, as much as 85% of Social Security benefits may be included in taxable income. “Up to 85% taxable” does not mean an 85% tax rate: the included amount is then taxed under ordinary income-tax brackets.

How an RMD changes the calculation
- Add one-half of your annual Social Security benefits to other income.
- Include tax-exempt interest and the taxable portion of income from sources such as a traditional-account distribution.
- Compare the result with the base amount for your filing status.
- Apply the IRS worksheet to determine how much of the benefits is included in taxable income, subject to the maximum 85% rule.
For example, a retiree whose combined-income calculation is just below a worksheet breakpoint could cross it after receiving a taxable RMD. The result may be that a larger percentage of benefits is taxable. The exact amount depends on total benefits, filing status, other income, tax-exempt interest, and the detailed worksheet; the RMD alone cannot determine it.
Can an IRA withdrawal increase Medicare premiums?
It can, but usually not in the same year as the distribution. Medicare’s income-related monthly adjustment amount, or IRMAA, can add charges to Part B and Part D premiums when income exceeds the applicable thresholds. Medicare generally uses a federal tax return from two years earlier to set the premium year’s income determination.
For 2026 premiums, the Medicare and You Handbook 2026 identifies the starting modified-adjusted-gross-income threshold as more than $109,000 for an individual filer or more than $218,000 for a married couple filing jointly. Higher income bands can result in higher Part B and Part D charges. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services publishes the year’s premium and adjustment table in its 2026 Medicare Parts A & B Premiums and Deductibles information.
The two-year IRMAA lookback
| Income event | Usual premium-year relationship | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Income received in 2024 | Generally considered for 2026 Medicare premiums | 2024 modified adjusted gross income, filing status, and the thresholds for 2026 |
| Income received in 2026 | Ordinarily points to 2028 Medicare premiums | Whether Medicare has the needed return, your filing status, and the thresholds in force for 2028 |
The lookback is a general rule, not a promise that every case follows the same administrative path. Medicare’s available tax data, the return year it uses, filing-status changes, and your Medicare status can affect the determination. A 2026 RMD therefore should be evaluated as a possible 2028 premium issue as well as a 2026 tax issue.

How the three effects interact
The chain is easiest to see in sequence:
- Distribution: You receive an RMD from an applicable account.
- Taxable amount: The portion not covered by basis or a tax-free exception enters income.
- Income-tax result: That amount may use room in one marginal bracket or extend into the next.
- Social Security result: The increased other-income figure can cause more benefits to be included in taxable income, potentially up to 85% under the federal formula.
- Medicare result: The higher income can be reported on the tax return used for a later IRMAA determination, potentially increasing Part B and Part D charges.
These are separate calculations. Crossing a federal tax bracket does not by itself trigger IRMAA, and becoming subject to IRMAA does not determine how much Social Security is taxable. Each uses different definitions, thresholds, years, and filing-status rules.
How to estimate the effect before taking a distribution
1. Identify the account and taxable portion
List each traditional IRA, employer plan, inherited account, and any basis. Confirm the applicable RMD calculation and estimate how much of the planned withdrawal is taxable. Keep voluntary withdrawals separate from the amount required for the year.
2. Build a tax-year income estimate
Combine pensions, wages, interest, dividends, capital gains, the taxable RMD, and the expected taxable share of Social Security. Apply the deduction and filing-status assumptions you expect to use. Compare the resulting taxable income with the 2026 marginal-rate structure or the rates for the year being planned.

3. Run the Social Security worksheet
Use total annual benefits, one-half of those benefits, other income, tax-exempt interest, and your filing status. Do not substitute the 25,000 or 32,000 base amount for a tax bracket; it is only the starting point for the benefit-tax calculation.

4. Map income to the correct Medicare year
Write the distribution year beside the likely premium year two years later. Then check the Medicare handbook and CMS table for that premium year. For a 2026 RMD, do not use the 2026 IRMAA threshold as though it were a 2026-income test; the published 2026 thresholds use 2024 income.
5. Test more than one withdrawal amount
Compare the required amount alone with a larger withdrawal, using identical assumptions. The comparison should show the extra ordinary income tax, any change in taxable Social Security, and the possible later IRMAA exposure. The official rules do not identify a universally optimal distribution schedule.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Assuming every RMD is fully taxable: Check basis and qualifying tax-free treatment first.
- Applying the new bracket to all income: Only the dollars in the higher band receive that marginal rate.
- Calling 85% a tax rate: It is the maximum share of benefits that may be included in taxable income under the federal formula.
- Using the wrong Medicare year: Label both the income year and the premium year; Medicare generally looks back two years.
- Treating a threshold as a personal bill: Filing status, modified adjusted gross income, and the applicable premium table determine the actual result.
- Ignoring tax-exempt interest: It is part of the Social Security combined-income calculation even though it may not be taxable itself.
- Assuming one distribution guarantees a surcharge: IRMAA depends on the return Medicare uses and your circumstances in that premium year.
When professional advice is worthwhile
Consider an individualized calculation when an RMD could move you across a bracket boundary, a Social Security worksheet breakpoint, or an IRMAA income band; when you have after-tax basis; when you file separately; when you have an inherited account; or when your income changed sharply from the return Medicare is using. A tax professional or fiduciary financial planner familiar with retirement income and Medicare premiums can model the interactions using your actual account balances, benefits, deductions, and filing status.
Before acting, verify the current-year rules because tax rates, Medicare thresholds, and premiums are year-specific. The IRS and Medicare sources linked above provide the governing federal information, while your own return determines the final numbers.
