That can pressure stock valuations, push down the market prices of existing fixed-rate bonds, and improve the interest available from some new bonds and deposit accounts. None of those effects is automatic or uniform: markets react to expectations, economic data, inflation prospects, credit risk and the reason rates moved, not just to the announced rate change.
What a higher Federal Reserve policy rate changes
The federal funds rate is the overnight rate banks charge one another. The Federal Reserve says it influences other interest rates, household and business borrowing costs, and broader financial conditions, but the effects on employment and inflation arrive indirectly and with delays. The transmission also depends on other economic forces. See the Federal Reserve explanation of monetary-policy transmission.

When policy becomes tighter, lenders and investors generally demand more compensation for supplying money. Mortgage, business-loan, credit-card and other rates may adjust, while Treasury and corporate bond yields can move as investors revise their expectations for inflation, growth and future Federal Reserve decisions. A policy move can therefore affect stocks, bonds and cash through several channels at once.
Why the announcement itself is not the whole story
Financial markets often move before a policy meeting because prices incorporate expectations. If a rate increase was widely anticipated, much of its effect may already be reflected in stock prices, bond yields and exchange rates. A surprise move, or a change in the Federal Reserve’s guidance about future policy, can produce a larger reaction. The 2026 Federal Reserve staff paper finds that an unexpected positive policy shock is expected to lower stock-market value through higher yields, higher equity risk premia or lower expected dividends. The paper’s authors also note that different kinds of policy news can work through different channels and can even produce a different overall sign.

How rising rates affect stocks
Higher discount rates reduce the present value of future cash flows
A stock represents a claim on future earnings, dividends or other cash flows. To compare money received in the future with money available today, investors discount those expected cash flows. A higher discount rate makes each future dollar worth less in present-value terms. The Federal Reserve’s asset-valuation discussion describes asset prices in this way and emphasizes that prices also change when expected payoffs or risk premia change.
This is why a rate increase can lower a stock’s valuation even before the company’s reported earnings change. The effect is not a mechanical formula for every share: investors may simultaneously raise their estimates of future profits, lower the risk premium they require, or conclude that stronger economic conditions will help sales.
Financing and earnings channels
Higher rates can increase a company’s cost of borrowing when it refinances debt or takes out a new loan. More expensive financing can reduce future profit, delay investment or make projects less attractive. If tighter financial conditions slow customers’ spending, expected revenue and dividends may also fall. Conversely, a company with little debt, strong cash generation or pricing power may be less exposed to this channel than a highly leveraged business. The direction and size of the effect depend on the company’s balance sheet and the economic reason for the rate move.

A rate increase does not guarantee a stock-market decline. If investors believe the economy is strong enough to support higher earnings, that improvement can offset valuation pressure. A rate decision that is less restrictive than feared can also lift stocks even if the policy rate itself rises. The Federal Reserve staff paper is a warning against turning the headline “rates up” into a guaranteed forecast for a particular portfolio.

Do bond prices fall when interest rates rise?
For an existing fixed-rate bond, the coupon payment is set when the bond is issued; it does not increase merely because market rates rise. To make that older bond competitive with newly issued bonds offering higher yields, its market price generally has to fall. As the SEC’s Investor Bulletin puts it, “A fundamental principle of bond investing is that market interest rates and bond prices generally move in opposite directions.”
The SEC’s illustrative example
The SEC bulletin gives a hypothetical, not an observed market result:
| Item | Illustration |
|---|---|
| Bond face value | $1,000 |
| Original coupon | 3% |
| Remaining term in the example | 10-year Treasury bond after one year |
| New market rate | 4% |
| Illustrative market price | $925 |
The $925 figure is the bulletin’s simplified illustration of how a 3% bond might be repriced when comparable market rates reach 4%; it is not a forecast, recommendation or statistic about today’s Treasury market.

All else equal, a longer-maturity bond is more sensitive to a rate change because more of its cash flows arrive far in the future and must be repriced. A lower-coupon bond is generally more sensitive than a higher-coupon bond with the same maturity. The exact response also depends on the size and speed of the yield move, the bond’s credit quality and market liquidity.

Holding to maturity versus selling early
If an issuer makes all scheduled payments and you hold an individual bond to maturity, you receive the stated coupon payments and face value according to the bond’s terms, subject to default and other risks. Its interim market price can still move substantially. Selling before maturity converts that price movement into a realized gain or loss: you may receive less than face value when rates or credit spreads have risen, or more when market conditions have moved in your favor. The SEC’s bond FAQ also identifies credit, inflation and liquidity risks.
An individual bond is not the same as a bond fund
An individual bond has a contractual maturity date. A bond fund owns a changing portfolio and reports a market value each trading day; it does not promise that your original investment will be returned on a date corresponding to the fund’s average maturity. Both can lose value when yields rise, but the timing, diversification, fees and liquidity are different. Compare the structure before treating either as a substitute for a cash reserve.
Will I earn more on cash when rates go up?
Higher market yields can improve the interest available on some savings accounts, money-market products and newly issued short-term instruments. The Associated Press described this broader bond-and-yield environment on September 24, 2026, but it did not establish a universal pass-through to every account. An individual bank can change its rate on its own schedule, and a variable rate can fall later.

Before moving money, verify the current annual percentage yield, whether it is variable or fixed, fees, minimum balance, introductory-period conditions, withdrawal limits and any applicable deposit protection. The Federal Reserve’s policy rate is not the rate printed on every consumer account. Cash has a different job from a bond
Cash or a deposit account is generally chosen for ready access and a stable dollar balance, not for a guaranteed inflation-adjusted return. If inflation runs faster than the account’s yield, purchasing power can decline even when the nominal balance rises. A fixed-rate bond can lock in a known coupon but can lose market value before maturity; a variable-rate cash account may reprice more quickly but offers no promise that its yield will remain high. Liquidity, not just the quoted rate, should determine where emergency funds belong.
How expectations, inflation and growth change the result
The Federal Reserve’s principles for monetary policy explain that higher real interest rates tend to slow economic growth and moderate firms’ price increases as sales growth slows. That macroeconomic effect can influence all three asset groups:
- Stocks: slower expected sales or profits can offset the benefit of lower inflation or stronger margins.
- Bonds: yields reflect expected inflation, real growth, policy and credit risk, so a policy-rate change does not determine every maturity’s yield by itself.
- Cash: a higher nominal yield may compensate partly for inflation, but the real return depends on how prices change and how long the account keeps its rate.
Investors therefore need to ask what the rate move signals. A hike intended to restrain overheating demand may hurt companies dependent on rapid growth. A move made because inflation is easing less than expected can alter bond yields and stock risk premia differently. The same one-quarter-point change can have different market consequences in different economic settings.

| Choice | How a rate increase usually reaches it | Access to money | Main risks to examine | Questions to ask |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stocks | Higher discount rates, financing costs and equity risk premia can reduce valuations; stronger earnings expectations can offset them. | Usually tradable, but the market price can be volatile when funds are needed. | Business and market risk, changing earnings, valuation and policy expectations. | How dependent are expected returns on distant cash flows or new borrowing? |
| Individual fixed-rate bond | Its market price generally falls when comparable yields rise; the coupon stays fixed. | Can be sold, but the sale price may be below face value and liquidity may vary. | Interest-rate, credit, inflation and liquidity risk; default can interrupt payments. | What are the maturity, coupon, issuer and plan if money is needed early? |
| Bond fund | Portfolio market value changes as yields and credit spreads change; holdings are managed rather than held by you to one maturity date. | Often readily traded, but the quoted value fluctuates. | Interest-rate, credit, inflation, liquidity and fee effects. | What is the fund’s maturity or duration profile and what volatility can you tolerate? |
| Interest-bearing deposit account | The provider may raise a variable yield, but the timing and size are not guaranteed to match the policy move. | Generally high access, subject to the account’s withdrawal rules. | Inflation risk, rate-reset risk, fees, minimums and provider terms. | What yield is available now, and under what conditions can it change? |
A practical process when rates are rising
- Set the time horizon. Separate money needed soon, money with a fixed future date and long-term capital. A short emergency reserve has a different requirement from retirement money decades away.
- List the actual exposures. Record each stock holding’s debt sensitivity, each bond’s maturity, coupon and issuer, each fund’s interest-rate and credit profile, and every cash account’s current terms.
- Test a sale-before-maturity scenario. For a bond, estimate whether you could tolerate a price below face value if an unexpected expense forced a sale. Do not assume a maturity guarantee solves a liquidity problem.
- Check rate and account terms directly. Confirm the current yield, reset language, fees, minimums, withdrawal conditions and applicable deposit protections instead of inferring them from a Federal Reserve announcement.
- Evaluate inflation and credit risk. A higher coupon is not automatically a better result if inflation erodes purchasing power or the issuer’s ability to pay is weak. The SEC lists interest-rate, credit, inflation and liquidity risk as separate bond considerations.
- Compare the reason for the move. Ask whether markets expected it and what it says about inflation, growth and future policy. This helps prevent a single headline from becoming an unsupported forecast for your portfolio.
- Match the decision to the objective. Use liquidity for near-term spending, contractual maturity only when the date fits your plan, and diversified long-term investments for goals that can withstand market fluctuations. A rate move alone is not a complete rebalancing rule.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming every rate moves together
The federal funds rate is one overnight rate. Mortgage, corporate, municipal, savings and long-term Treasury rates also reflect term, credit, liquidity and inflation expectations. Track the rate relevant to the product you own.
Confusing a bond’s coupon with its current yield
The coupon is a contractual payment based on face value. Yield incorporates the price paid in the market. When the price falls, the fixed coupon represents a higher yield to a new buyer; your coupon payment has not changed.
Treating a high cash yield as permanent
A variable account can reprice downward after the Federal Reserve cuts rates or after a provider changes its terms. Recheck the account rather than building a long-term plan around a promotional or temporary yield.
Believing maturity removes every bond risk
Holding to maturity can reduce the importance of interim price swings, but it does not remove issuer default, inflation, reinvestment or liquidity risk. The issuer must still make the promised payments.
Reacting to an expected move after markets have priced it
If investors anticipated the announcement, prices may have adjusted beforehand. Selling or buying solely because the headline appeared can lock in a move that already occurred or overlook the information contained in the policy guidance.
The bottom line
Rising U.S. interest rates usually make borrowing more expensive, reduce the present value assigned to future stock cash flows, and lower the market price of existing fixed-rate bonds. They can also raise the interest offered by some new bonds and cash accounts, but pass-through is uneven and terms matter. The useful comparison is not “which asset wins when rates rise?” It is whether each holding’s horizon, liquidity, maturity, credit quality, inflation exposure and rate structure fit the job you need it to perform.
