1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUsually, a rise in market or central-bank rates does not increase the rate on a fixed deposit you have already opened. Your agreed rate normally remains in force until the stated maturity date. Banks may offer better rates on deposits opened later, so an existing depositor can temporarily earn less than a new customer.
The important exception is the maturity point. A bank may renew the deposit at its then-current rate, move the money to another product, or stop paying interest, depending on the contract. Before deciding to break an account early, compare the new deposit’s net return with the interest you would lose and any withdrawal charge.

What happens to an existing fixed deposit when rates rise?
A fixed-rate term deposit is a contract for a specified principal, rate and term. In a conventional account, a general market-rate increase does not rewrite that contract. The rate is normally locked until maturity, even if the central bank raises its policy rate several times during the term.

| Account | What normally happens when market rates rise | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Existing fixed-rate deposit before maturity | The contracted rate continues for the remaining term. | Whether the agreement permits early withdrawal, and the interest penalty or loss that applies. |
| New fixed-rate deposit | The institution may quote a higher rate, but it sets the offer according to funding costs, competition, liquidity and other factors. | Annual rate or APY, compounding, term, minimum balance, eligibility and any promotional expiry. |
| Deposit reaching maturity | The principal may renew, transfer to another account or stop earning interest, according to the maturity instructions. | Renewal default, notice or grace period, and the rate offered for the new term. |
The result is not guaranteed to be the same in every country or product. Variable-rate, step-up and callable deposits have different contract rules from a plain fixed-rate account.
Why new deposit rates can move differently from the policy rate
Central-bank decisions influence retail rates but do not dictate a fixed pass-through. The Bank of England explains that Bank Rate “affects the level of all other interest rates in the UK,” while cautioning that retail savings rates “may not do so by the same amount.” A bank can change its deposit pricing later, by less than the policy move, by more than it, or not at all.
Deposit rates also reflect a bank’s need for funding, its liquidity position, competing offers, operating costs and the term of the money. A longer commitment may receive a higher rate than a shorter one, but it also leaves you without access to the funds for longer. A promotional rate can expire, and a headline annual rate may assume a particular compounding method or balance.

These are UK weighted averages, not the highest rates available, a promise to an individual saver, or a measure of every fixed deposit. “Outstanding” balances include deposits opened under earlier conditions; “new business” reflects accounts opened in the period. The gap illustrates why an existing depositor can lag behind new offers when rates have risen, but it does not prove that every new account pays more.
What happens when the deposit matures?
Maturity is the point at which you can normally reassess the rate and access rules without an early-withdrawal decision. Some institutions automatically renew the principal, and sometimes the interest, for another term. Others transfer the money to an easy-access account or require an instruction. The renewal rate is not necessarily the rate you had before or the best rate then available.
US Consumer Financial Protection Bureau guidance for certificates of deposit (CDs) states: “The interest rate for the new CD is not guaranteed to be the same as the interest rate for your current CD – it may be higher or lower.” That guidance is US consumer information; other jurisdictions use different notice and renewal rules.
Maturity checklist
- Record the exact maturity date. Put it in a calendar far enough in advance to allow comparison.
- Read the maturity instructions. Identify whether renewal is automatic, where the money goes if you do nothing, and whether principal and interest renew together.
- Find the notice or grace window. Some contracts allow a limited period after maturity to withdraw or change instructions without an early-withdrawal charge. The length and existence of that window vary by jurisdiction and institution.
- Obtain the renewal quote in writing. Check the new term, annual rate or APY, compounding and the date the quote expires.
- Compare alternatives. Include deposits with different terms, an account with access to cash and any applicable deposit-protection rules.
- Give the instruction before the deadline. Missing the window can leave the money in an unwanted term at the institution’s then-current rate.
Should you break a fixed deposit to reinvest at a higher rate?
There is no universal answer. Early withdrawal may be prohibited, may reduce interest, or may impose a stated penalty. Even where it is allowed, replacing the account is worthwhile only if the extra return on the new deposit exceeds all costs and the value of losing access for the new term.

A decision calculation
Use the same principal and the same time horizon for both choices:
- Keep the deposit: interest still payable under the old contract through its maturity, less any taxes or account costs that apply to you.
- Break and reinvest: interest already earned that the contract allows you to retain, minus the early-withdrawal penalty or forfeited interest, plus the net interest from the replacement deposit for the comparable period.
- Include the cash-flow cost: a higher rate may not compensate for needing the money before the replacement term ends.
Ask the institution for a precise early-withdrawal quote rather than estimating from a generic schedule. Confirm whether the penalty is charged against interest, principal or both, and whether accrued interest is recalculated. Then compare the replacement account’s rate after fees, taxes and any promotional period.
Illustrative calculation
Suppose, purely as an example, that 10,000 currency units remain locked for six months at 3.00%, while a new six-month deposit pays 4.50%. The extra gross interest for six months would be 75 currency units (10,000 × 1.50% × 6/12), before tax and compounding. If breaking the old account costs 120 currency units, the switch loses money despite the higher advertised rate. The figures are illustrative; use the rates, balance, day-count convention and penalty in your own contract.
Fixed, variable, step-up and callable deposits
A headline rate is not enough to identify how an account responds to rising rates. Read the rate-adjustment and withdrawal clauses.

| Product type | Rate behavior | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed-rate account | The stated rate generally remains unchanged for the agreed term. | Predictable return, but the saver may miss higher rates and may face a withdrawal penalty. |
| Variable-rate account | The institution may change the rate after opening under the contract and applicable notice rules. | Can benefit from rising rates, but the rate can also fall and future income is uncertain. |
| Step-up or stepped-rate account | Successive rates are set in advance and apply on specified dates. Multi-step or bonus structures can have additional conditions. | The final advertised rate may apply only briefly; calculate the blended return over the whole term. |
| Callable deposit | The institution may end the contract early under a call provision, returning principal and earned interest as the agreement states. | You may have to reinvest when rates are lower, losing the expected future income. |
US Regulation DD uses legal definitions for fixed-rate, variable-rate and stepped-rate accounts, including notice conditions. Those definitions apply to the US rule and do not replace the plain-language agreement or another country’s terminology. CFPB consumer guidance also warns that a longer CD can offer a higher rate while requiring the funds to remain committed longer, and that a callable CD can leave you reinvesting at a lower rate if the institution ends it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to compare a new deposit offer
Compare offers on an equivalent basis rather than choosing the largest number in an advertisement. The CFPB states: “The CD with the highest rate may not always be the best fit for your needs.”
- Rate basis: annual interest rate, APY or local equivalent, and whether the figure assumes monthly, quarterly or annual compounding.
- Term and maturity: exact length, maturity date and whether the product uses a short introductory period.
- Access: withdrawal rights, transfer limits and the financial or interest cost of taking money out early.
- Rate clauses: variable adjustments, step-up dates, bonus conditions and callable provisions.
- Eligibility and balance: minimum opening amount, maximum balance, new-customer restrictions and whether the quoted rate applies to your balance.
- Fees and expiry: account fees, promotional-rate end dates and the rate after the promotion.
- Renewal: automatic-renewal setting, notice method, grace period and the rate-setting process at renewal.
- Protection and tax: the deposit-insurance or protection scheme in your jurisdiction, coverage limits and how interest is taxed. Verify these with the relevant regulator and institution because they differ by country.
Country and contract differences matter
“Fixed deposit,” “term deposit” and “CD” describe similar ideas but not identical legal products. The cited market statistics and policy explanation are UK-specific. The renewal and product-choice guidance cited above is from the US CFPB, and Regulation DD is a US rule. Do not apply a US notice period, penalty assumption, tax treatment or protection limit to an account elsewhere.

Common scenarios and the practical response
Rates rise halfway through your term
Keep the existing rate unless a contract review shows that switching after all costs produces a better net result. A market increase alone does not change a conventional fixed rate.
Your bank offers automatic renewal
Do not assume the old rate carries over. Check the renewal term and quote during the notice window, then give a new instruction if another product better matches your cash needs.
The new rate is higher but the term is longer
Price the additional return against the period during which you cannot access the money. A shorter deposit or variable account may be preferable if you expect to need the cash or expect further rate changes.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The institution calls the deposit
Read the call notice and the amount returned. You may need to reinvest at a lower prevailing rate, so compare replacement options promptly while preserving your emergency cash reserve.
You cannot find the penalty schedule
Ask for a written early-withdrawal quote before authorizing a break. Do not infer the amount from another product or another country’s rules.
Quick Recap
A simple rate-cycle plan
- At opening: save the contract, rate basis, maturity date and withdrawal terms.
- During the term: monitor market offers without assuming that a higher quote justifies early closure.
- Before maturity: obtain the renewal rate, compare equivalent alternatives and check protection and tax treatment.
- At maturity: confirm where the principal and interest went and that the selected term and rate match your instruction.
- After a rate fall: remember that a previously locked fixed rate may now be advantageous, provided the institution remains covered by the applicable protection scheme and the account still suits your needs.
