How Qualified Dividends Are Taxed in 2026—and When They May Be Tax-Free

Qualified dividends are not automatically tax-free. They are ordinary dividends that may receive the same maximum federal rates as net capital gains: 0%, 15% or 20%. A 0% federal rate can apply when your taxable income falls within the 2026 zero-rate band and the dividend satisfies the issuer, category and holding-period rules. Your filing status, taxable income, investment positions and tax worksheet determine the actual result.

This guide covers U.S. federal individual income tax rules for dividends received in 2026. State tax treatment can differ, and no threshold by itself determines a personal tax bill.

What makes a dividend “qualified”?

The Internal Revenue Service defines qualified dividends as ordinary dividends subject to the same 0%, 15% or 20% maximum tax rates that apply to net capital gain. That favorable treatment is a tax classification, not a promise of a zero-dollar bill. The dividend must pass several tests, and the final rate comes from the qualified-dividend and capital-gain calculation on your federal return.

Publication 550 identifies three core requirements:

  • Eligible issuer: The payment generally must come from a U.S. corporation or a qualified foreign corporation.
  • No applicable exclusion: Certain distributions and situations are carved out of qualified-dividend treatment.
  • Required holding period: You must hold the stock for the applicable number of days while meeting the risk-of-loss rules.

Qualified dividends are included in your ordinary dividends. They are not a second payment or a separate kind of income reported outside your dividend total. The IRS explains the definition and exclusions in Publication 550 (2025), Investment Income and Expenses.

When can qualified dividends be tax-free?

“Tax-free” in this context usually means a 0% federal income-tax rate on the portion of qualified dividends that falls inside the applicable capital-gain zero-rate band. It does not mean the dividend is ignored, that it is exempt from every tax, or that every dollar of income below the threshold is untaxed.

The thresholds apply to taxable income, after allowable deductions, and the calculation considers your ordinary taxable income before applying the preferential rate to qualified dividends and net capital gains. For example, if ordinary taxable income uses most of your zero-rate space, only the remaining space may be available for qualified dividends at 0%. Amounts above that space can fall into the 15% band or, at higher taxable-income levels, the 20% maximum band.

The following are the IRS maximum capital-gain zero-rate amounts for taxable years beginning in 2026. They are filing-status thresholds, not a deduction and not a guarantee that all income below them is tax-free.

Filing status 2026 maximum zero-rate amount 2026 ceiling for the 15% rate band
Married filing jointly $98,900 $613,700
Surviving spouse $98,900 $613,700
Head of household $66,200 $579,600
Single (included in “all other individuals”) $49,450 $545,500
Married filing separately $49,450 $306,850
Estates and trusts $3,300 $16,250

These 2026 figures come from IRS Revenue Procedure 2025-32, published in Internal Revenue Bulletin 2025-45. Above the applicable 15% ceiling, the maximum rate is generally 20%, subject to the specific rules and exceptions on the return. The worksheet still has to allocate your income; comparing a single number with a threshold is not enough.

How the federal rate calculation works

Ordinary income is considered first

Qualified dividends and net capital gains receive preferential rates only after the return accounts for ordinary taxable income. Wages, interest, nonqualified dividends and other ordinary income can occupy the lower portions of the taxable-income ranges. Your qualified dividends then stack on top of that amount for the capital-gain calculation.

The 0%, 15% and 20% bands are maximum rates

A dividend in the 0% band has no regular federal income tax at that rate. A dividend in the 15% band is taxed at 15% under the capital-gain calculation, while a dividend above the applicable ceiling is generally subject to a 20% maximum rate. The phrase “maximum” matters: the worksheet coordinates the bands with your complete return, and special rules can affect the result.

A 0% rate does not remove reporting requirements

You still report the dividend even when the applicable federal rate is 0%. The amount remains part of taxable income and can affect other calculations. A zero rate also does not establish that a state will provide the same treatment; check the rules for your state of residence.

Which holding-period rule applies?

Common stock: more than 60 days

For common stock, you generally must hold the shares for more than 60 days during the 121-day period that begins 60 days before the stock’s ex-dividend date. The relevant date is the ex-dividend date, not simply the record date. When counting, include the day you dispose of the stock but not the day you acquire it.

The rule measures economic exposure, not just the appearance of ownership in a brokerage account. Days during which your risk of loss is diminished under specified arrangements may not count. Short sales, options or other positions can therefore change whether the holding-period requirement is met.

Preferred stock with long dividend periods: more than 90 days

For certain preferred-stock dividends attributable to periods totaling more than 366 days, the general requirement is more than 90 days during a 181-day period that begins 90 days before the ex-dividend date. Preferred dividends attributable to periods totaling fewer than 367 days use the ordinary 61-day holding-period test instead.

Why “own it on the record date” is not enough

Buying before the record date may establish who receives a distribution, but it does not by itself establish qualified status. You must test the number of qualifying days, the ex-dividend-date window and whether any transaction reduced your risk of loss. A dividend shown as qualified by a payer can still fail the holding-period rule on your individual return.

Dividends and distributions that may not qualify

Several categories can be excluded from preferential treatment or require a closer review:

  • Dividends on stock held for too short a period.
  • Amounts connected with short sales or substantially similar positions.
  • Certain payments in lieu of dividends.
  • Some distributions from real estate investment trusts (REITs) and regulated investment companies (RICs).
  • Payments from issuers that do not meet the U.S.-corporation or qualified-foreign-corporation requirement.

Foreign dividends are not automatically qualified. The foreign corporation must meet the applicable definition, and the distribution must avoid the other exclusions. Likewise, a REIT or fund distribution can contain multiple tax components; the entire payment should not be assumed to have one rate.

Where qualified dividends appear on Form 1099-DIV

Your broker or other payer generally reports dividends on Form 1099-DIV:

Form 1099-DIV box What it represents
Box 1a Total ordinary dividends, including the qualified portion
Box 1b The portion of box 1a identified as qualified dividends

Because box 1b is part of box 1a, do not add the two boxes together. Use the information statement as a starting point, then apply your own holding-period and transaction facts. The IRS Form 1040 instructions discuss qualified-dividend reporting and exceptions at Instructions for Form 1040.

A box 1b amount is not an unconditional guarantee. The payer may not know about every short sale, substantially similar position, diminished-risk arrangement or other taxpayer-level fact. Retain trade confirmations and account records if you need to verify the days you held the shares.

How to calculate your federal tax, step by step

  1. Gather the income documents. Collect every Form 1099-DIV, including corrected forms, and identify box 1a and box 1b for each payer.
  2. Reconcile the reported amounts. Confirm that box 1b is included within box 1a and investigate differences between your records and the forms.
  3. Test eligibility. Check the issuer, the type of distribution, the ex-dividend-date holding period and any short-sale, option or other reduced-risk position.
  4. Determine taxable income and filing status. Use the filing status on your return and taxable income after allowable deductions, rather than gross income alone.
  5. Apply the IRS worksheet. Complete the Qualified Dividends and Capital Gain Tax Worksheet in the Form 1040 instructions when it applies. If your return requires Schedule D, use the Schedule D Tax Worksheet instead.
  6. Review special adjustments. If you claim an investment-interest deduction, check whether it reduces the qualified dividends eligible for the 0%, 15% or 20% rates.
  7. Enter the resulting tax. Carry the worksheet’s result to the appropriate Form 1040 line and keep the supporting statements with your records.

The worksheet is important because it separates ordinary taxable income from the amounts eligible for preferential treatment and applies the filing-status thresholds in the correct order. The IRS explains the calculation in Publication 550 and the Form 1040 instructions.

Illustrative 2026 scenarios

Scenario 1: Some dividends may fit in the 0% band

Assume a single filer has $40,000 of taxable ordinary income and $8,000 of dividends that pass all qualified-dividend tests. The 2026 single-filer zero-rate amount is $49,450. In a simplified illustration, roughly $9,450 of remaining taxable-income space exists before reaching that threshold, so the entire $8,000 qualified dividend could fall in the 0% federal band. The actual return still requires the IRS worksheet and all other income, deduction and transaction facts.

Scenario 2: Ordinary income uses the zero-rate space

Assume a head-of-household filer has $60,000 of taxable ordinary income and $10,000 of qualifying dividends. The 2026 head-of-household zero-rate amount is $66,200. In a simplified stacking illustration, only the remaining $6,200 of zero-rate space could be available for the dividends; the balance would move into the next applicable band. This is not a substitute for completing the worksheet.

Scenario 3: Above the 15% ceiling

A married couple filing jointly with taxable income above $613,700 is beyond the 2026 joint-filer 15% ceiling. Qualified dividends may generally be subject to the 20% maximum rate, but the return must still apply the statutory calculation and any special rules. The threshold does not convert every dollar of the couple’s income to a single flat rate.

Investment-interest deductions and other adjustments

The IRS cautions that an investment-interest deduction may reduce the amount of qualified dividends eligible for the 0%, 15% or 20% preferential rates. If you borrowed to buy investments and claim this deduction, do not assume the full box 1b amount receives capital-gain treatment.

Other facts can also change the result, including corrected Forms 1099-DIV, multiple lots bought on different dates, securities lending, short sales, options and fund distributions with more than one tax character. When the transaction history is complex, use the worksheet instructions or obtain individualized advice rather than relying only on the broker’s box 1b classification.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Calling every qualified dividend tax-free: Qualified status only opens access to preferential rates; the 0% band depends on taxable income and filing status.
  • Using gross income instead of taxable income: The 2026 thresholds are taxable-income amounts after allowable deductions.
  • Adding boxes 1a and 1b: Box 1b is a subset of box 1a.
  • Counting from the record date: The common-stock test is tied to the ex-dividend date and requires more than 60 qualifying days in the specified 121-day period.
  • Assuming every foreign or fund dividend qualifies: Issuer, distribution and exclusion rules still apply.
  • Ignoring risk-reducing transactions: Some days may not count when a short sale or similar arrangement diminishes your risk of loss.
  • Applying federal treatment to state taxes: State conformity varies, so a 0% federal rate does not settle the state result.

What to keep for your records

Keep Forms 1099-DIV and corrected forms, purchase and sale confirmations, dividend notices, records of ex-dividend dates and documentation of any short sale, option, securities-lending or investment-interest activity. These records let you reconstruct the holding period and explain a change from the amount reported in box 1b.

For a straightforward portfolio, the Form 1040 qualified-dividend worksheet may be sufficient. A tax professional can help when you have several lots, preferred stock, fund allocations, foreign issuers, borrowed-money deductions or positions that reduced your market risk.

Federal versus state treatment

This explanation addresses U.S. federal individual income tax only. States may tax qualified dividends differently, may use their own brackets or may not follow every federal exclusion. Check your state’s current instructions before treating a dividend as tax-free for your complete tax liability.
