Ohio’s electricity does not come from a single plant or even from plants inside the state. Ohio is part of the PJM Interconnection, a regional grid spanning 13 states and the District of Columbia. Generators put power onto the system, high-voltage transmission lines move bulk electricity, substations lower the voltage, and local distribution utilities deliver it to homes and businesses. PJM coordinates the regional network and wholesale markets, while your local utility maintains the wires to your address.
The fuel mix depends on what is being measured. Ohio’s installed generating capacity, the energy consumed by the state’s electric sector, and the PJM mix used on retail disclosures are different statistics with different dates and geographic boundaries. Keeping those distinctions straight is the key to understanding where Ohio’s electricity comes from.

How electricity gets to an Ohio home
Electricity follows a shared network rather than a dedicated path from one named power plant to one customer. Power plants generate electricity at a voltage that is increased for efficient long-distance transport. Transmission lines carry that bulk power across Ohio and the wider PJM region. PJM describes transmission as the “interstate highway” of electricity distribution.

Natural-gas, coal, nuclear, wind, solar, hydroelectric and oil-fired units can all supply the grid. Output changes with demand, weather, fuel availability, maintenance and outages. A wind farm may produce less during calm conditions; a gas plant can often increase output when demand rises; a nuclear unit generally supplies steady power.

2. Transmission moves bulk electricity
Transmission lines operate at high voltage because moving the same amount of power at higher voltage reduces losses. PJM’s educational material notes that transmission voltage is too high to be delivered directly to a home or business. Regional transmission links allow electricity generated in one state to serve demand in another and help operators respond when a plant or line is unavailable.
3. Substations reduce voltage
At substations, transformers step transmission voltage down to levels suitable for local distribution. Additional substations and equipment reduce it again before power enters neighborhood circuits.
4. Distribution utilities deliver it to customers
Local distribution utilities own or operate the poles, underground cables, transformers and meters that connect the regional grid to individual premises. The utility responsible for your address continues to deliver electricity even if you choose a different competitive generation supplier.
Who runs Ohio’s grid?
PJM Interconnection operates the regional transmission system that includes Ohio. It balances supply and demand in real time, coordinates the flow of electricity over high-voltage lines and administers wholesale energy, capacity and ancillary-services markets. Local utilities operate the lower-voltage distribution networks in their service territories.
PJM says its operators evaluate conditions using information from hundreds of thousands of points every four seconds. They dispatch available generators, monitor line constraints and account for outages, weather and changing customer demand. Because those conditions change continuously, the mix shown for a month, half-year or calendar year is an average or accounting measure, not a precise description of the electrons serving a particular home at a particular instant.

Ohio’s generating capacity as of December 31, 2024
The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) reported 25,857 megawatts (MW) of installed generation capacity statewide at the end of 2024. Capacity is the maximum rated output of equipment, not the amount of electricity it actually generated during the year. A plant can have substantial capacity but run only when needed; weather-dependent resources may operate below their rating when conditions are unfavorable.
| Technology | Installed capacity (MW) | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| Natural gas | 15,112 | Rated capacity of Ohio gas-fired units |
| Coal | 6,655 | Rated capacity of coal units |
| Nuclear | 2,134 | Rated capacity of nuclear units |
| Solar | 1,270 | Rated capacity of solar installations |
| Wind | 342 | Rated capacity of wind facilities |
| Oil | 275 | Rated capacity of oil-fired units |
| Hydro | 69 | Rated capacity of hydroelectric facilities |
| Total | 25,857 | Statewide capacity snapshot |
These values should not be converted directly into claims such as “natural gas supplied 58% of Ohio’s electricity.” They show the relative size of the equipment fleet, while annual generation depends on how frequently each type operates.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) gives a different view: the estimated sources of energy consumed by Ohio’s electric power sector during 2024. This is an energy-consumption accounting measure, not the PUCO capacity chart and not a meter-level tracing of power flows.
| Source | Share of Ohio electric-sector consumption in 2024 |
|---|---|
| Natural gas | 54.0% |
| Coal | 26.3% |
| Nuclear | 16.1% |
| Renewable energy | 2.3% |
| Petroleum | 1.3% |
EIA also estimated 173.8 trillion British thermal units (Btu) of net interstate electricity inflows into Ohio in 2024 and no net international imports. “Net” is important: it is the balance of electricity entering and leaving the state over the period. It does not mean every customer relied exclusively on out-of-state plants, nor does it identify the generator physically supplying a home at a particular moment.
The PJM mix used in Ohio retail disclosures
Ohio’s retail disclosure rules require covered electricity offers to provide approximate generation-source and environmental information. When a supplier uses purchased energy, the applicable regional mix is used for the disclosure. As a result, a customer’s statement can show a PJM-wide mix rather than the output of plants located within Ohio.

Actual PJM resource mix, January through June 2026
PUCO’s September 2026 posting reports the following PJM regional actual mix for the first half of 2026:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →| Resource | PJM actual mix, January–June 2026 |
|---|---|
| Natural gas | 41.75% |
| Nuclear | 31.5% |
| Coal | 16.5% |
| Wind | 4.5% |
| Hydropower | 1% |
| Biomass | 0.25% |
| Solar and other categories | Included in the disclosure table; individual values are not stated here |
This is a regional, partial-year actual measurement. It is not an Ohio-only generation total and should not be presented as the fuel mix of every Ohio plant.
Projected PJM mix for 2026
PUCO’s 2026 projection is a separate forecast:
| Resource | Projected PJM mix for 2026 |
|---|---|
| Natural gas | 43% |
| Nuclear | 32% |
| Coal | 16% |
| Wind | 4% |
| Hydropower | 1% |
| Biomass | 0.5% |
| Oil | 0.5% |
| Other | 0.5% |
| Solar | 2.5% |
A projection is not a report of what has already happened. Weather, fuel prices, plant outages, demand and new generator availability can make actual results differ.
Why your supplier’s fuel mix may differ from “Ohio’s” mix
Three labels should accompany any electricity-mix number:
- Geography: Is the figure for Ohio, the PJM region or another area?
- Measure: Is it installed capacity, actual generation, energy consumption, or a retail disclosure allocation?
- Period: Is it an end-of-year snapshot, a calendar year, a partial-year actual or a forecast?
A competitive supplier’s disclosure describes the generation attributes assigned to its retail offer under Ohio’s rules. It does not prove that identifiable electrons from a named wind farm or power station traveled through dedicated wires to your meter. All customers connected to the same distribution system receive electricity from the interconnected grid, while contracts and accounting certificates determine how a supplier reports its sources.

Does Ohio import electricity?
Yes, Ohio had substantial net interstate electricity inflows in the EIA’s 2024 estimate: 173.8 trillion Btu. Ohio both exports and imports power at different times; the net figure is the total entering the state minus the total leaving it over the accounting period.
PJM’s regional footprint makes those exchanges routine. A plant in a neighboring state can serve regional demand when its output is economic and transmission capacity is available, while Ohio generators can serve customers elsewhere. State borders therefore do not define the physical path of electricity or the market used to schedule it.
How PJM plans for reliability
Real-time balancing is only one part of grid operation. PJM also procures “capacity” in advance: commitments from generators, demand-response programs and other resources to be available when needed. PUCO’s fiscal-year 2025 report says PJM generally procures enough resources about three years ahead.
| Planning item | 2025/2026 delivery year | 2026/2027 delivery year |
|---|---|---|
| Reported reserve margin | 18.5% | 18.9% |
| Forecast peak load | 153,883 MW | 159,329 MW |
Reserve margins and peak-load figures are planning estimates reported in the FY2025 document. They are not measurements of current operating conditions or guarantees that every future forecast will be met exactly. A reserve margin represents resources planned above expected peak demand to provide a buffer for outages, weather and forecast error.

What supplier choice changes on your bill
For customers of PUCO-regulated distribution utilities, an electric bill generally separates the cost of generation supply from transmission and distribution charges. Ohio’s energy-choice program allows eligible customers to select a competitive generation supplier. The local utility still delivers the electricity, maintains the distribution system, responds to outages and provides regulated delivery service.

- Identify your utility and eligibility. Your bill names the distribution utility serving your address and indicates whether a competitive supply offer applies.
- Review current offers. Use PUCO’s Apples to Apples comparison tool to examine price, contract length, cancellation fees, renewable-content claims and other plan terms.
- Check the disclosure period and conditions. Prices, introductory terms, renewal rules and eligibility can change, so verify the current offer rather than relying on an old advertisement or disclosure.
- Separate supply from delivery. Switching suppliers changes the generation-service contract; it does not reroute your wires or change which utility responds to a local outage.
The supplier-choice decision is therefore a contract and billing choice, not a selection of a private physical wire to a particular power station.
How Ohio’s electricity demand could change
PUCO’s FY2025 report forecasts Ohio electricity consumption rising from 146.7 million megawatt-hours in 2023 to 272.7 million megawatt-hours in 2043 when anticipated large-load additions are included. It estimates peak load could increase approximately 56% over 2023–2043, equivalent to average annual demand growth of 2.81%.
Those figures incorporate expected data-center and industrial growth. They are forecasts, not observed 2043 results. If demand grows as projected, PJM and Ohio utilities will need additional generation, transmission capacity, distribution upgrades and reliability planning. The timing and location of new loads matter because a resource can exist somewhere in the region while local wires remain constrained.

How to interpret an electricity statistic correctly
- Ask whether the number is megawatts of capacity or megawatt-hours of energy produced or consumed.
- Check whether the boundary is Ohio or the full PJM region.
- Look for the measurement date: December 31, 2024; calendar year 2024; January–June 2026; or a 2026 projection.
- Distinguish an actual result from a forecast or a retail accounting disclosure.
- Do not infer the physical source of your home’s electrons from a supplier’s percentage table.
Using those five checks prevents the most common errors: treating capacity as generation, presenting a PJM mix as Ohio-only, and describing a forecast or partial-year result as a full-year fact.
