Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteNintendo’s launch-era Switch 2 purchase rules were not one worldwide checklist. For its Australia and New Zealand direct-store allocation, Nintendo required paid Nintendo Switch Online membership, qualifying gameplay history, an active subscription at registration and purchase, and a one-console-per-customer limit. U.S. and UK priority criteria were reported differently. These rules were intended to constrain access and misuse, but available reporting does not establish how much they reduced scalping. The invitation process ended before the console launched on June 5, 2025; it is not a current buying requirement.
What Nintendo required in Australia and New Zealand
Nintendo Australia announced a registration process for eligible account holders to enter for a chance to buy either the console or the Mario Kart World bundle through My Nintendo Store. Its official terms applied to Australia and New Zealand accounts and delivery addresses—not to buyers worldwide.

To qualify, the registrant had to meet all of these conditions:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Have purchased at least one year of paid Nintendo Switch Online Individual or Family membership.
- Have more than 50 hours of qualifying Nintendo Switch gameplay recorded by 23:59 UTC on February 28, 2025. Trial software and free software did not count.
- Be the purchaser of an active paid Nintendo Switch Online membership both when registering and when making the purchase.
- Allow Usage Information sharing so Nintendo could count gameplay, and meet the account and delivery-address requirements for Australia or New Zealand.
Nintendo scheduled three registration and purchase rounds between April 9 and May 19, 2025. Someone not selected in one round could be considered in a later round. An account holder could register once and indicate interest in both purchase options, but could be selected for only one. The terms stated: “Purchase limit: one (1) console per Customer.” Nintendo also reserved the right to verify identity, residence, membership and gameplay, and to deny or cancel an opportunity if it reasonably suspected misuse, interference or fraud. Nintendo Australia’s 2025 registration terms and its April 7 announcement set out the process.

U.S. and UK rules were reported separately
The available evidence for U.S. and UK priority thresholds is secondary reporting, rather than the underlying official rule text. GamesRadar reported in April 2025 that U.S. priority invitations favored people with at least 12 months of Nintendo Switch Online membership and 50 total gameplay hours. Its UK account described a requirement for two continuous years of membership, an active subscription at purchase, and gameplay and data-sharing criteria. These reported thresholds should not be combined with Australia and New Zealand’s official terms or treated as global eligibility rules. GamesRadar’s launch-period report describes the regional differences.
Direct-store invitations and retailer preorders were different routes
Nintendo’s U.S. direct-store selection process and retailer preorders were separate channels. Nintendo of America announced that U.S. retail preorders would begin April 24, 2025. The direct-store priority criteria did not automatically apply at other retailers. Nintendo’s April 18 announcement also listed launch MSRPs of $449.99 for the console and $499.99 for the console plus Mario Kart World; those are historical U.S. launch prices, not current price guidance.

Amid heavy demand and quickly selling-out retailer listings, Nintendo said direct-store launch-day delivery was not guaranteed and suggested that customers seeking a console on June 5 also visit participating retailers. The Associated Press reported on the demand and Nintendo’s fulfillment statement in its April 2025 coverage. Retail availability and delivery timing depended on the retailer and stock; a direct-store invitation was not the only route to a preorder.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →What the restrictions do—and do not—show about scalping
Account tenure, gameplay history, data-sharing consent, a one-registration rule, purchase caps and verification gave Nintendo ways to limit who could access its own allocation and to act on suspected misuse. That describes the design of the rules, not their measured effect. The available sources do not quantify scalping before or after the restrictions, so they cannot show that scalping was eliminated or reduced by a particular amount.
