Put the strongest role-relevant evidence near the top, show what you personally built or improved, name the tools you actually used, and describe a concrete result or scope. A clean, truthful, tailored page is more persuasive than a long list of technologies or an elaborate design.
What hiring managers need to verify
Hiring teams reviewing an entry-level technology résumé are trying to answer practical questions quickly: Can this candidate do work related to the role? What have they actually built, analyzed, or improved? Can they explain their decisions? Have they worked with other people, users, or constraints?
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
A skills inventory alone does not answer those questions. Evidence does. A project, internship, class assignment, open-source contribution, campus job, or freelance engagement can demonstrate a skill when the entry explains the work rather than merely naming a stack. The University of Texas at Austin’s guidance on strong technical résumé bullets recommends connecting what you did with why it mattered and how you did it.
- Capability: the technical or analytical skill you used.
- Contribution: the part you personally owned, not just what a team produced.
- Context: the user, business need, dataset, constraint, or course objective.
- Result: a defensible measure, a specific change, or a clearly stated finding.
- Collaboration: communication with teammates, users, stakeholders, or maintainers when it was part of the work.
Every claim should survive a follow-up interview question. If you list a framework, database, cloud service, testing method, or language, be prepared to explain where and how you used it. If a result has no reliable numerical measure, describe the scope or observable outcome instead of inventing a percentage.

Choose a structure that puts relevant evidence first
There is no universal résumé order. Put the material that best matches the target role where a reader will see it earliest. For many entry-level software applications, a useful sequence is contact information and working links, technical skills, selected projects, education, and internships or other relevant experience. The University of Washington’s entry-level software engineer résumé guide and Dice’s first-resume advice both emphasize selecting an order that serves an early-career candidate’s strongest proof.
Header and contact links
Use your name, city and region (or a remote-work location if relevant), a professional email address, phone number, and links that open without a login. A GitHub profile, personal portfolio, or live demo is useful only when it contains presentable, relevant work. Test every URL in the exact file you plan to submit. Do not include a link simply because you have an account; an empty or unfinished profile weakens the evidence.
Optional summary
A summary can add context when it names the role you want and two or three strengths that the rest of the page substantiates. For example, a graduate could identify a target as “entry-level data analyst” and mention SQL, Python, and dashboard work demonstrated in named projects. A summary that says you are “passionate,” “hard-working,” or “results-driven” without proof consumes valuable space. Omit it when it repeats the skills section or pushes a stronger project below the first page.
Technical skills
Group skills into readable categories such as Languages, Frameworks, Data, Cloud and Tools, or Testing. List only technologies you can discuss accurately. If your exposure was limited to a class or guided tutorial, label the context in a project or education entry rather than implying professional mastery. Spell out an acronym at least once when it improves clarity, and use the employer’s terminology only when it describes something you genuinely used or studied.

Projects, education, and experience
Projects often deserve prominent placement for a new graduate because they provide direct evidence when professional experience is limited. Education can include a degree, institution, graduation date, selected coursework, honors, or certifications that support the role. Experience should include internships when available, but relevant campus, volunteer, freelance, part-time, and open-source work can also show technical and transferable ability. Arrange these sections according to the evidence most relevant to the vacancy, not according to a fixed template.
Turn projects into evidence of work
“Built a web app with React and Node” tells a hiring manager almost nothing about your judgment or contribution. A stronger entry explains the problem, your ownership, the important methods, and what changed. UT Austin’s examples use a what–why–how pattern; the point is to give enough context for an employer to assess the work rather than guess from an app name or technology list.
A five-question project test
- What did you build or investigate? Name the product, analysis, automation, model, service, or research question.
- Who or what was it for? Identify users, a client, a campus organization, a dataset, or the course need.
- What did you personally own? Separate your contribution from a team’s total output.
- Which tools or methods mattered? Mention the technologies that enabled the work, not every tool you touched.
- What happened as a result? Give a tested metric when you can defend it; otherwise state a concrete behavior, scope, finding, or limitation.
Bullet formula and examples
Use a strong verb, the object of the work, the method, and the outcome or scope. Three focused bullets are usually more useful than a paragraph. For example:
Recommended Free Tools
- Weak: “Created a meal-planning app using Python and a database.”
- Stronger: “Designed a Python meal-planning service for students that generated weekly plans from dietary and budget constraints; modeled recipes in PostgreSQL and documented the trade-offs in the project README.”
- Stronger with a measured result: “Implemented input validation and automated tests for a student budgeting API, raising the test suite from 18 to 47 cases and catching duplicate transaction errors before deployment.”
- Team context: “Owned the accessibility review and front-end component work for a four-person campus-events project; interviewed two student organizers, translated findings into keyboard-navigation fixes, and coordinated the changes through pull requests.”
Use numbers only when you know how they were obtained. A count of test cases, records processed, contributors, users who actually used a demo, or response time measured in a documented test can be defensible. Do not turn an estimate into a claim about production impact. When no metric exists, state what the software supports, what constraint you met, or what you learned.

Show collaboration without hiding the technical work
Technical hiring includes communication and coordination. Name code reviews, issue tracking, requirements discussions, user interviews, documentation, presentations, or handoffs when they materially affected the result. “Worked with a team” is too vague; identify your role and the interaction that mattered. A solo project can still show collaboration if you gathered feedback, incorporated a maintainer’s review, or wrote instructions for users.
Use experience beyond internships
Employers value problem solving, reliability, and communication wherever they were developed. A campus IT job might show troubleshooting and ticket documentation; a teaching-assistant role might show explaining technical concepts; a volunteer data project might show cleaning records and presenting findings. Include such work when the connection to the target role is accurate.
Replace duty lists with accomplishments
Start bullets with the problem or outcome rather than “responsible for.” Instead of “Answered help-desk tickets,” write what you handled, how you handled it, and the result you can support: “Resolved account-access and software-installation requests through the campus ticketing system, documented repeat fixes, and escalated security-sensitive cases under team procedures.” Do not claim a resolution rate or time saved unless your records support it.

Academic, open-source, and hackathon work
Course projects belong on the page when they demonstrate skills relevant to the role. State the assignment’s real objective and your individual contribution. Open-source entries should name the repository or project, the issue or feature, and the review or merge process if applicable. A hackathon can be valuable when the entry explains the prototype, your role, and the constraint or demonstration; the event name alone is not evidence.

Confidential or restricted work
If an internship or client agreement limits disclosure, do not reveal proprietary names, code, data, or performance figures. Describe the public-safe problem, your responsibilities, technologies you are permitted to name, and the type of outcome without exposing restricted information. UT Austin advises students with nondisclosure agreements to ask a supervisor or mentor what may be disclosed; its guidance is available in the technical résumé bullet resource.
Tailor every application honestly
Start with the job description. Mark the required languages, frameworks, practices, domain terms, and kinds of work. Then select the projects, coursework, experience, and links that offer the closest proof. Tailoring is prioritization, not keyword stuffing.
- Extract the role’s real requirements. Separate must-have skills from preferred tools and general responsibilities.
- Map each requirement to evidence. Write down the project bullet, course, internship, or contribution that demonstrates it.
- Use accurate terminology. If the posting says “continuous integration,” use that phrase when your work used a CI workflow; do not add it because it sounds desirable.
- Reorder and edit. Move the best-matching project higher, adjust bullet wording for clarity, and remove unrelated detail.
- Check the proof. Every highlighted skill should appear in a project, experience, education, or portfolio item that you can explain.
Mirror a framework’s exact name only if you used or studied that framework. If your experience is with a neighboring tool, name the one you actually used and, if useful, explain the transferable concept in a bullet. Never imply production, leadership, or years of experience you do not have.

Practical formatting choices
- Use one-column structure with standard headings such as Summary, Skills, Projects, Education, and Experience.
- Keep dates, locations, job titles, and organization names in consistent positions and formats.
- Use ordinary text for important information; avoid placing contact details or accomplishments inside images, charts, decorative sidebars, or complex text boxes.
- Choose a conventional file type requested by the employer, and inspect the exported file for missing characters, broken bullets, or altered line breaks.
- Use links that display clearly and remain clickable, while also writing the project or profile name so a printed copy still makes sense.
Many career guides suggest one page for an entry-level résumé. Treat that as a useful default, not an absolute rule: employer instructions, local conventions, and the amount of relevant evidence can justify a different length. Do not shrink the type or remove margins merely to force a page. No layout can guarantee that an applicant-tracking system will parse or advance a résumé; simple formatting reduces avoidable readability and parsing problems but cannot replace relevant evidence.
Compare a summary and no-summary version
| Question | Include a summary when… | Omit it when… |
|---|---|---|
| Role relevance | It names a specific target role and substantiated strengths. | It uses generic traits or an unfocused career objective. |
| Visibility of evidence | It directs attention to a strong project or domain that might otherwise be missed. | It pushes projects or experience lower without adding context. |
| Readability | It is two or three concise lines that a reader can scan. | It repeats the skills list or becomes a dense paragraph. |
| Credibility | Each claim is supported elsewhere on the page or in a working portfolio. | It relies on unsupported adjectives or inflated proficiency. |
Use the version that makes the strongest evidence visible sooner. Keep a master résumé with all truthful material, then create a focused copy for each application.
Make links, numbers, and claims verifiable
Before sending, open every portfolio, repository, and demo link in a private browser window. Remove dead projects, unfinished placeholders, exposed credentials, and readme files that no longer match the code. A hiring manager should be able to understand the project’s purpose, setup, and your contribution without guessing.
