How Netflix Makes Money: Subscriptions, Advertising, and Content Costs

Netflix makes most of its money from recurring monthly streaming memberships. Advertising on its lower-priced ad-supported plan is a growing second stream, but Netflix does not disclose a standalone advertising-revenue total in its cited annual results. The largest cost is content amortization, recorded as shows and films are released and watched—not necessarily when Netflix pays for them.

Netflix’s 2025 financial picture

Netflix reports as one operating segment, so its annual filing does not provide separate profit-and-loss statements for subscriptions, advertising, merchandise, or live experiences. For the fiscal year ended December 31, 2025, the company reported the following consolidated figures:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Measure 2025 result How to interpret it
Streaming revenue $45.183 billion Revenue from Netflix’s streaming business, primarily membership fees, with advertising included in the consolidated total
Year-over-year revenue growth 16% Growth versus fiscal 2024; Netflix attributed the increase mainly to membership growth, price increases and higher advertising revenue, partly offset by foreign exchange
Operating income $13.327 billion Profit after operating costs but before interest and taxes
Operating margin 29.5% Operating income as a percentage of revenue
Content amortization $16.422 billion Non-cash accounting expense recognizing the cost of released content over its expected viewing life
Total cost of revenues $23.275 billion Content amortization plus production, delivery, payment, support and other costs

These are full-year figures from Netflix, Inc.’s 2025 Form 10-K, filed January 23, 2026. Netflix says it primarily focuses on revenue and operating margin as performance measures. During 2025 it discontinued reporting membership numbers and average monthly revenue per paying membership as regular headline metrics, so a current subscriber count or company-wide average monthly price cannot be inferred from this filing.

Monthly memberships are the core business

What members pay for

Netflix’s own description is direct: its revenues are “primarily derived from monthly membership fees for services related to streaming content to our members.” A customer pays for access to a catalog under the plan offered in that customer’s country. Plans can differ in price, features and whether advertising is included.

As of December 31, 2025, paid-plan prices ranged from the equivalent of $1 to $37 per month across countries. That is a global range reported by Netflix, not a current United States price list and not an average paid by each member. Exchange rates, local pricing decisions and plan changes mean the endpoints should not be applied to another market or date.

How Netflix grows membership revenue

  • More paying households: Additional members increase recurring billings at the prices available in their markets.
  • Price changes: Netflix periodically adjusts prices, saying its long-term objective is to maximize revenue and invest in the service.
  • Plan mix: Customers choosing different tiers produce different monthly revenue, while an ad-supported tier can lower the entry price.
  • Retention and engagement: Keeping a member paying month after month makes the subscription model recurring rather than dependent on a single purchase.

Netflix’s 2025 revenue increase reflected this combination of membership growth and price increases, rather than a single universal subscription price. Because the company no longer reports membership totals in the cited annual results, readers should not divide total revenue by an assumed subscriber number to calculate an official average.

How Netflix makes money from advertising

The ad-supported plan

Advertising lets Netflix offer a lower-priced membership while selling commercial inventory around viewing. The company describes the plan as both a price-point option for consumers and an additional revenue and profit stream. Subscribers pay the plan fee; advertisers pay for access to impressions delivered to eligible viewers. The two payments are economically related but are not reported as equal or interchangeable sources.

Availability is country-specific and can change. The same 2026 FAQ described plans for 15 additional markets in 2027; that is a company plan, not proof that those markets already had the service or that the timetable cannot change.

What determines ad revenue

Netflix identifies three long-term drivers:

  1. Ad-plan membership: A larger eligible audience creates more potential inventory.
  2. Ad fill rate: The proportion of available impressions that are actually sold and served. More filled inventory can increase revenue without changing the plan price.
  3. CPM: The price advertisers pay per thousand impressions. Maintaining strong CPMs raises revenue for a given number of impressions.

In a Q1 2025 shareholder letter, Netflix described the Netflix Ads Suite as its in-house, first-party advertising-technology platform intended to improve measurement, targeting, formats and programmatic capabilities. That letter described a rollout at that time; it should not be read as a claim that every capability was available in every market throughout 2026.

Why there is no defensible ad-revenue percentage

Netflix’s cited 2025 annual results do not state a separate dollar amount for advertising revenue. Advertising is therefore confirmed as an additional and growing source, but its share of the $45.183 billion total cannot be calculated from the disclosed figures. Any precise percentage would be an estimate rather than a reported Netflix result, and subscriptions remain the identified primary source.

Consumer products and experiences are extensions

Netflix says its intellectual property can support consumer products and experiences based on its programming and that it may develop these offerings to drive growth. Examples could include activities or merchandise connected with programs, but the 2025 filing does not quantify them as a separate major revenue segment. Because Netflix reports one operating segment and identifies monthly streaming fees as its primary revenue source, these extensions should not be presented as financially comparable to subscriptions.

How Netflix acquires and produces content

First-run commissions and second-run licenses

Netflix obtains programs through first-run commissions, which may be owned or licensed, and through second-run licensing. A licensing contract generally gives Netflix access to a title for a fixed fee and a defined period. The payment can be committed before the title appears in the service.

Netflix-produced titles

For productions Netflix controls or commissions, development and direct production costs are capitalized as content assets. The asset represents the economic cost of obtaining the right to show the title. It is not immediately treated as a full expense simply because cash was paid to a studio, producer or other supplier.

What content amortization means

When a title becomes available to members, Netflix begins amortizing its capitalized content asset. Amortization spreads the asset’s cost across the period in which Netflix expects to benefit from the title. The expense is generally accelerated because viewing is expected to be heavier soon after launch than years later.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Netflix investor accounting slides state that, on average, more than 90% of a licensed or produced streaming content asset is expected to be amortized within four years after launch. This is an average accounting expectation, not a four-year expiration date and not a guarantee for each film or series. A title can remain available after most of its cost has been amortized.

Content amortization was $16.422 billion in 2025 and represented the majority of Netflix’s $23.275 billion cost of revenues. The expense reduces operating income even when no matching payment leaves the bank account in that same quarter.

Why cash content spending differs from content expense

Cash spending answers, “How much did Netflix pay toward content commitments?” Amortization answers, “How much of previously capitalized content cost belongs in this period’s income statement?” They track different events and can diverge materially.

Measure Reported amount Period and meaning
Cash spent on content About $17.0 billion Fiscal 2024; derived by combining additions to content assets with the change in content liabilities, according to Netflix Investor Relations’ May 2025 slides
Content amortization $15.3 billion Fiscal 2024; accounting expense recognized as available titles generated expected benefits

The timing example

  1. Netflix signs a license or begins producing a show.
  2. It pays deposits, production invoices or licensing installments while the title is still being made or prepared.
  3. The payments increase cash outflow and may create a content asset or liability, but they do not automatically become the entire period’s expense.
  4. The title launches, and Netflix begins recognizing amortization, generally at a faster rate when early viewing is expected to be highest.

Consequently, cash spending can run ahead of amortization when Netflix is funding a large slate of unreleased projects. In another period, amortization can exceed current cash payments because the expense relates to titles paid for or produced earlier.

Other costs inside cost of revenues

Content is the largest component, but it is not the only cost required to deliver Netflix. The company lists several additional categories:

Best Value
Hiacry 8 Pack Gel Pens, Quick-Drying Black Ink, 0.7mm Fine Point Fidget Pen
  • Twin-Ball Design : Hiacry gel pen features a double ball conical tip that reduces writing resistance and provides a stable and smooth writing experience. 0.7mm quick drying black ink ensures no jumping, leakage or seepage.
  • Quick-Dry Long Lasting Ink:0.7mm black ink can slide effortlessly, dry immediately, & is not easily dirty. It has a high-capacity reservoir (up to 1300 meters), which is very suitable for left-handed & right-handed users.
  • Sleek Design for Journaling & Planning: Engineered with a low center of gravity and precision tip for steady ink flow, these journaling pens excel at note-taking, sketching, planning, and more. They combine stylish pens with top-tier performance.
  • Rolling Ball Design:The pocket clip with roll ball design can be easily attached to notebook pockets and binders, in addition, the fidget on the pen clip is also a small toy for your daily thinking to relieve stress.
  • Comfortable Non-Slip Grip:The ergonomic pen barrel has a soft rubberized coating for a comfortable, non-slip grip, so you won't get fatigued even after long hours of writing.
  • Personnel and other production expenses
  • Music rights
  • Participations and residuals owed to creative participants
  • Streaming delivery and distribution expenses
  • Payment-processing fees
  • Customer-service operations
  • Other costs needed to make content available to members

This distinction matters when interpreting margins. Subtracting the $16.422 billion content-amortization figure from revenue does not produce Netflix’s full cost base; the remaining cost-of-revenues items and other operating expenses also affect operating income.

Netflix’s future content commitments

Signed agreements for future streaming titles can create streaming-content obligations. Netflix discloses determinable obligations in its commitments and contingencies information. Not every future payment appears in the contractual-obligations table: some agreements cannot be quantified until a title, fee or other contract detail is known. A disclosed commitment total should therefore be read as the amount Netflix could determine under the filing rules, not as a complete forecast of every future content dollar.

How the business model turns viewing into operating profit

  1. Acquire and retain members: Netflix markets a catalog and plan choices intended to keep recurring monthly payments flowing.
  2. Set prices and plan features: Prices vary by country, and periodic increases can raise revenue per paying household while the company continues investing in content.
  3. Sell advertising where offered: The ad tier adds advertiser payments, with revenue influenced by audience size, fill rate and CPM.
  4. Fund a content pipeline: Cash goes to licenses, commissions and productions, often before viewers can watch the finished title.
  5. Recognize content expense over availability: Capitalized costs move into amortization after launch, generally faster when early viewing is expected to be stronger.
  6. Pay delivery and service costs: Streaming infrastructure, payment processing, customer support and other operating needs are included alongside content in the cost structure.
  7. Measure the result: Revenue less these costs and other operating expenses produces operating income and the operating margin reported to investors.

How to read Netflix’s reported numbers

Revenue growth is not the same as subscriber growth

The 16% increase in 2025 revenue reflected several factors—membership growth, price increases and increased advertising revenue—with foreign exchange partly offsetting them. Since Netflix discontinued regular membership and average-revenue-per-membership reporting during 2025, revenue growth cannot be attributed to a single change in subscriber count.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Operating margin includes the timing of accounting expense

The 29.5% operating margin reflects amortization recognized on the current catalog, current delivery and support costs, and other operating expenses. It does not measure the amount of cash Netflix spent on every future title during the year. For cash pressure, commitments and content payments matter; for reported profit, the amortization schedule matters.

Plan prices require a date and country

The $1-to-$37 monthly equivalent range is explicitly global and dated December 31, 2025. It should not be quoted as a U.S. range, a universal price, or a promise that the same prices remain available. Ad-plan availability likewise depends on market and date.

Common misconceptions, corrected

  • “Netflix mainly makes money from ads.” No. Membership fees are identified as the primary source; advertising is additional, and no standalone 2025 ad total is disclosed.
  • “Content amortization is Netflix’s content budget.” No. Amortization is an income-statement allocation of capitalized costs. Cash content spending can occur years or months before the related expense.
  • “All of cost of revenues is content.” No. Content amortization is the majority, while delivery, production personnel, rights, residuals, payment processing and customer service also contribute.
  • “A four-year amortization expectation means a title disappears after four years.” No. More than 90% is expected to be amortized within four years on average; availability and accounting life are separate questions.
  • “The contractual-obligations table shows every future content payment.” No. Amounts that cannot yet be determined are not fully captured.

The bottom line for readers

Netflix is fundamentally a recurring-membership business. Its ad-supported tier broadens the pricing ladder and adds advertiser revenue, but the company has not published a separate advertising total in the cited 2025 annual results. The economic cost of its strategy is dominated by content: Netflix pays for licenses and productions over time, capitalizes many of those costs, and then records amortization as titles become available. Understanding that timing difference is essential—cash commitments describe funding needs, while amortization describes the expense assigned to the viewing period.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
