Yes, you can share Netflix with someone who lives elsewhere, but not through unrestricted password sharing. Netflix defines a Household as the devices connected to the internet at the main place where the account is watched. A person outside that home needs either a separate Netflix account or an invitation as a paid extra member.
On eligible plans, Standard can add one extra member and Premium can add up to two. The extra member uses a separate login and password, activates in the account owner’s account-creation country, and can watch on one device at a time. The owner pays the extra-member charge.

What Netflix means by a Household
Netflix says a Household is “a collection of devices connected to the internet at the main place where you watch Netflix.” That definition focuses on the primary residence and its connected devices, not on every relative, friend, or roommate who has ever used the account.

Netflix also states: “You may not share your Netflix account outside of your household.” In practice, someone who regularly watches from another home is outside the intended Household arrangement. The supported alternatives are a separate membership or a paid extra-member slot, where that feature is available.

This distinction matters for families with two addresses. A student, partner, parent, or adult child may still be able to use the account legally through an extra-member invitation, but the person should not simply continue using the main account password from a different residence.
Can you share Netflix with someone who does not live with you?
You have two legitimate paths:
- Add an extra member: The account owner pays for a slot and sends a unique invitation. The recipient gets separate credentials and a profile.
- Open a separate account: The person pays for and manages their own membership, which is the fallback when the owner’s plan, billing method, or country does not support extra members.
An extra member is not an unrestricted extension of the owner’s Household. Netflix limits the feature by plan, country, billing arrangement, and device use. If the recipient cannot activate under those rules, a separate account is required.
Which Netflix plans allow extra members?
Eligibility is determined by the plan and by how the account is billed. The core limits are:

The table describes slot limits, not the number of screens an owner can use at once or the plan’s video-quality and download specifications. Those features vary by the exact plan and market. Check the account’s current plan page before changing tiers.

Separate sign-in details
Netflix describes an extra member as having “their own account and password,” while the person who invited them pays for the membership. The recipient therefore does not need the owner’s main password for normal viewing. Separate credentials also make it easier to remove that person without changing the owner’s password for everyone else.

A personal profile and recommendations
The invitation process lets the recipient create a profile or accept a profile transferred from the owner’s account. The resulting profile is personalized rather than a shared viewing space. Recommendations and viewing activity can therefore reflect the extra member’s habits.
One-device-at-a-time viewing
Netflix documents one-device-at-a-time viewing for an extra-member account. The recipient can watch on a single device at a time under that extra-member access. Watching on multiple devices simultaneously requires the extra member to obtain a separate full Netflix plan.

The extra member must activate in the same country where the owner created the Netflix account. This is a country rule, not a promise that the person must live at the same street address. A person who lives in another home in the same country may meet the country condition, while someone trying to activate in another country does not.
VPNs, proxies, and unblockers can prevent activation. They can make Netflix detect a location that does not match the account’s country requirement, so turning those services off is an important troubleshooting step.
What extra-member access does not include
- Unlimited sharing: The slot does not authorize additional people to use the extra member’s credentials.
- Multiple simultaneous streams: The documented extra-member limit is one device at a time.
- Every plan or billing method: Ad-supported plans and some package- or third-party-billed accounts are excluded.
- Cross-country activation: The recipient cannot create the extra-member account in a different country from the one in which the owner opened the account.
- Every profile type: Some profiles cannot be transferred, including Kids profiles, PIN-protected profiles, and the main profile.
How the owner adds an extra member
The account owner completes the purchase and invitation. The recipient cannot independently create a paid slot on the owner’s behalf.

- Open account settings. Sign in as the account owner and choose Buy an extra member slot.
- Review the new charge. Netflix displays the revised payment amount. Confirm it only after checking whether proration or a billing-date change will apply.
- Enter the recipient’s details. Provide the person’s name and email address. In a television-based flow, Netflix may allow a phone number instead.
- Send the invitation. Netflix generates a unique invitation link for that recipient.
- Have the recipient activate. The invitee follows the link, completes activation in the required country, and creates or accepts a profile.
The owner should send the invitation only to the intended person. Because the link is unique, forwarding it can give the wrong person control of the activation step.
How profile transfer works
Profile transfer is optional. It is useful when the invitee already has a profile in the owner’s account and wants to keep its history rather than start over.
When Netflix permits the transfer, the profile can carry over:
- Personalized recommendations
- Viewing history
- My List items
- Saved games
- Profile settings
The transfer does not apply to every profile. Netflix excludes Kids profiles, PIN-protected profiles, and the main profile. If one of those profiles is selected, the recipient must create a new profile instead of moving the existing one.
Before transferring, check that the selected profile is the one the recipient actually uses. A transfer changes where that profile is managed, so choosing the wrong profile can move the wrong viewing history and recommendations.

Costs, billing, and household budgeting
The extra-member charge is added to the owner’s Netflix bill; the recipient does not pay Netflix directly for that slot. The exact price depends on the account’s country and current offer. A retrieved Netflix pricing view displayed amounts in Malaysian ringgit, so those figures should not be used as US prices. US customers should read the current amount shown in their own account, including applicable taxes.
Netflix says the owner reviews and confirms the new payment amount during setup. The first charge may involve proration, and Netflix notes that the billing date may change. For a household budget, record both the recurring extra-member amount and any one-time or partial-cycle adjustment shown at checkout.
Package billing creates another potential cost issue: some accounts paid through a telecommunications, television, or other third-party package cannot add extra members. In that case, upgrading or changing the direct Netflix plan may be necessary, or the recipient may need an independent account. Do not assume that moving from one plan name to another will remove a package provider’s restriction.

Replacing the recipient
The owner can change an extra member up to twice per calendar month. Replacing a recipient removes the current member immediately. The former recipient should therefore expect access to end as soon as the replacement is completed, rather than at the next renewal.

Canceling an extra-member slot does not necessarily stop viewing at once. Netflix allows the current extra member to continue watching through the end of the current billing period. The slot then expires instead of renewing.

Canceling the main account
If the primary Netflix membership is canceled, its extra-member slots are canceled as well. An extra member cannot keep that slot independently after the owner’s account ends; the person would need a separate Netflix membership.
Troubleshooting common activation problems
The recipient is asked to create a new account
First verify that the owner’s plan is Standard or Premium without an ad-supported restriction, and that the account is not billed through a provider that blocks extra members. If the account is ineligible, a separate membership is the available route.
Activation fails because of location
Confirm that the recipient is activating in the same country where the owner created the account. Disable any VPN, proxy, or unblocker and retry from a normal local connection. A person who is physically in another country cannot satisfy the country requirement merely by using the owner’s invitation.
The invitation link does not work
Ask the owner to check that the invitation was sent to the intended email address or phone number and that the recipient is using the unique link rather than a forwarded copy. If the owner replaced the member, the previous invitation or access may no longer be valid.
The recipient cannot see the old profile
Profile transfer is not mandatory and is unavailable for Kids, PIN-protected, and main profiles. Create a new profile when the existing one is excluded, or select an eligible profile if preserving history and recommendations is important.
Two people are trying to watch at once
Extra-member access is documented for one device at a time. Stop playback on the other device or move the recipient to a separate full plan if simultaneous viewing is necessary.

Why Netflix introduced this boundary
Netflix’s policy responds to the scale of account sharing. In a 2023 corporate announcement, Netflix said that over 100 million households were sharing accounts. The Household definition and paid extra-member option separate use at the primary residence from ongoing access by people living elsewhere.
