Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTwo UANs do not automatically cancel your EPF balance or make every withdrawal impossible. They indicate that your employment records need correction. EPFO intends one permanent Universal Account Number (UAN) for a member, while each employer can create a separate PF Member ID (MID) under that UAN. If two genuine UANs were issued, report both to your employer and EPFO, have the earlier UAN blocked after verification, and keep the current UAN active. Then check whether every old MID, PF balance and service detail has been transferred before filing a claim.
Duplicate-UAN correction and PF transfer are separate tasks. Correcting the UAN identifies the account that should remain active; transferring an old MID consolidates its money and service history. Your claim type still depends on your employment and the applicable EPF or EPS rules.

UAN and Member ID are not the same thing
A UAN is the permanent account number EPFO assigns to a member. EPFO’s member FAQ says there is no need to obtain a new UAN after changing jobs; it is intended to remain the same throughout a career. Each employer, however, can create a separate PF Member ID (MID) for the period of employment. Several MIDs under one UAN are normal and are not, by themselves, duplicate UANs.

| Member ID (MID) | A PF account linked to a particular establishment and employment period | A new employer may create a new MID under the existing UAN | Transfer the old MID’s balance and service details if they are not already consolidated |
Before treating the situation as a duplicate-UAN case, sign in to the official member account and list every UAN and MID shown in your records. A different MID, establishment code or passbook entry is not proof that you have two UANs.

Why two UANs can be allotted
EPFO’s UAN/KYC FAQ identifies two possible causes: a previous employer may not have entered the date of exit in its Electronic Challan-cum-Return (ECR) filing, or you may have applied for transfer of service in your current establishment. Either event can make the system treat a subsequent employment record as requiring another UAN.
“In case two UAN are allotted to you, this could be because of not filling of Date of Exit by your previous employer in ECR filing and / or you have applied for transfer of service in your current establishment.”
This wording appears in EPFO’s UAN and KYC FAQ, question 40. It describes administrative causes, not a finding that you have lost contributions or become ineligible for benefits. The practical issue is that contributions and service may be split between records until the duplicate UAN is resolved and the relevant MID is transferred.

What to do when you genuinely have two UANs
- Confirm that both numbers are UANs. Compare the two 12-digit numbers in your EPFO correspondence, payslips or member profile. Do not confuse a MID, establishment code or claim reference with a UAN.
- Collect the employment details privately. Keep both UANs, employer names, dates of joining and exit, MIDs, payslips, passbook entries and any transfer or claim reference numbers. Do not post UAN, Aadhaar, bank details or OTPs on social media or public forums.
- Ask your current employer to check the record. Give the payroll or HR team the two UANs and ask them to verify the date-of-exit entry, the current employment record and the UAN attached to your latest MID. An employer can correct an inaccurate employment filing or explain why a second record was created.
- Report the duplicate to EPFO. EPFO’s FAQ directs members to inform the employer and email EPFO with both the current and previous UANs. Use the contact channel displayed on the official EPFO portal and include only the information requested there. Describe which UAN is attached to your present employment and identify the older one.
- Wait for verification before choosing a claim route. EPFO says that, after due verification, previous UANs are blocked and the current UAN is kept active. Blocking the earlier UAN does not itself transfer every old MID or balance; review those records separately.
- Recheck the active account. Once the correction is reflected, sign in again and confirm that your current employer, KYC status, MIDs and passbook entries appear under the active UAN. If an old MID is missing or its balance has not moved, begin the transfer process rather than assuming the duplicate correction completed it.
How to check whether old PF money and service history moved
Open the passbook and service details for the active UAN and compare them with your employment history. Look for the old establishment, employee and employer contributions, transfer-in entries and the period of service associated with the earlier MID. A balance that remains visible only under the old MID is a sign that the transfer has not been completed.

- Compact for travelling
EPFO’s transfer FAQ says a member with multiple MIDs whose PF amount has not moved to the latest MID should seek a transfer. The transfer is intended to move both the PF amount and the service details. It is therefore possible to have a corrected, active UAN while still needing a separate transfer request for an old MID.
- UAN correction: resolves which UAN remains active and which earlier UAN is blocked.
- MID transfer: consolidates the old employment’s PF balance and service information into the present account.
- Withdrawal claim: requests a benefit under the applicable EPF or EPS rules after the records and eligibility are in order.
Do not treat a blank or delayed passbook entry as proof that contributions never existed. Employer filings, establishment status and portal processing can affect what is displayed. Preserve payslips and statements while the discrepancy is being resolved.
Choose the transfer method by establishment status
The route depends on whether the old and current establishments are exempted or un-exempted. EPFO’s transfer FAQ lists the following modes:
| Old establishment | Current establishment | Mode listed in EPFO transfer FAQ | What to verify now |
|---|---|---|---|
| Un-exempted | Un-exempted | Online transfer | Confirm both MIDs are visible and the current UAN is active |
| Exempted | Un-exempted | Online transfer | Check the trust or exempted-establishment details shown for the old account |
| Un-exempted | Exempted | Online transfer | Follow the current portal instructions for the receiving exempted establishment |
| Exempted | Exempted | Offline transfer | Obtain the applicable form and instructions from the establishments and EPFO |
This is the classification and procedure described in EPFO FAQ material from earlier years. Portal labels and processing arrangements can change, so check the live EPFO instructions before submitting a request. Do not select an online route solely because an old article says it is universal.

What a completed transfer changes for withdrawals and service
When the transfer is accepted, the old PF amount and the associated service details are brought into the present account. That gives EPFO a consolidated record instead of separate employment fragments. In the transfer situation described in EPFO’s FAQ, withdrawal forms are signed by the present employer. That statement should not be read as a guarantee that every future claim is automatic or that every member qualifies to withdraw.
Multiple UANs do not, by themselves, create withdrawal eligibility, determine the payable amount or permanently erase service history. If an old MID has not been linked or transferred, you may need to correct the records first. Once the records are reconciled, eligibility still turns on the claim type, employment status, scheme rules and the facts of your case.
EPF and EPS are separate benefits
“PF withdrawal” can refer to different benefits. EPFO’s overview treats the Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) accumulation and the Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS) benefit as separate schemes. A duplicate UAN does not merge them into one balance.

| Final member settlement | Final settlement of the member’s EPF accumulation when the applicable conditions are met | Form 19 | Duplicate status alone neither approves nor rejects the claim |

| EPS benefit | Pension-related benefit under the separate pension scheme | Not stated in the cited overview | Must be considered separately from the EPF balance |
Use Form 13 when the task is consolidation, not Form 19 or Form 31. Filing a settlement or advance claim against the wrong record can leave the old MID unresolved and create another reconciliation problem.

A practical decision path before filing a claim
- Are there truly two UANs? If no, treat the issue as multiple MIDs and review transfer status. If yes, report the duplicate and wait for the active-UAN correction.
- Is the old MID and its balance visible under the active UAN? If yes, compare the service period and transfer-in entries. If no, identify whether the old or current establishment is exempted and use the applicable transfer route.
- Is your intended action a transfer or a withdrawal? Use Form 13 for consolidation. Consider Form 19 or Form 31 only when the relevant EPF eligibility conditions are satisfied.
- Does the issue involve EPS service? Keep pension service separate from the EPF balance and check the current EPFO instructions for the applicable EPS process.
- Are the records still inconsistent? Stop before submitting a final claim, retain documentary evidence and escalate privately through the employer and official EPFO channels.
Examples of how the rules apply
Two MIDs, one UAN
You changed jobs and the new employer created a second MID under your existing UAN. This is the normal structure. If the old balance is not in the latest MID, request a transfer; there is no second-UAN correction to perform.
Two UANs after an unrecorded exit date
Your previous employer did not file the date of exit, and the next employer generated another UAN. Give both numbers to the current employer and report them to EPFO as directed in the UAN/KYC FAQ. After verification, the earlier UAN should be blocked and the current one retained. Then inspect the old MID and arrange its transfer if necessary.
Two UANs with a pending transfer request
You initiated a service transfer and later saw another UAN. The duplicate may be related to the transfer or the way the prior employment was reported. Do not assume the transfer completed merely because a request was submitted. Check the passbook and service history, and follow the establishment-status route shown in the current EPFO instructions.
Common mistakes and how to recover
Mistaking every old PF account for a duplicate UAN
Several MIDs can legitimately sit under one UAN. List the UAN itself before contacting EPFO; otherwise you may ask for a duplicate correction when the real need is a transfer.

Filing a withdrawal before consolidation
A final settlement or specified withdrawal does not replace Form 13. If an old MID is still separate, reconcile it first unless EPFO’s current instructions for your circumstances say otherwise.
Using the wrong transfer route
Exempted establishments can follow different procedures from un-exempted establishments. Confirm the status of both sides instead of copying a route from another member’s case.
Expecting an instant portal update
The live member portal currently displays a notice that claims and service requests may take longer during phased processing following database consolidation. The notice does not establish a guaranteed processing time, so do not plan around an unverified deadline.

Sharing sensitive identifiers publicly
Never publish your UAN, Aadhaar, bank account information, password or OTP while seeking help. Use the official EPFO contact process and private employer communication.
Portal access, UMANG and current-status checks
The live EPFO member portal states that UAN activation and generation can be done through UMANG. If you cannot activate or access the account, use the current portal’s support instructions rather than creating another UAN. A second registration can deepen the record problem.
Before every submission, confirm the active UAN, the employer name, the MID, the establishment’s exempted status and the exact claim or transfer form. Save acknowledgement numbers and screenshots privately. If the portal shows a processing notice, allow for delay and avoid submitting duplicate requests unless EPFO instructs you to do so.
Documents to keep ready
- Both UANs, if two were issued
- All relevant MIDs and establishment names
- Joining and exit dates for each employment
- Recent payslips showing PF deductions
- Passbook pages and transfer-in or transfer-out entries
- Employer correspondence about date of exit or transfer
- Claim, grievance or transfer acknowledgement numbers
- Identity and bank documents only through the secure EPFO or employer channel requested for your case
The practical rule
Keep one active UAN, identify every MID, transfer old balances and service details into the present account, and only then choose the EPF or EPS claim that matches your circumstances. Two UANs are a records issue to report and correct—not proof that your service history has vanished or that every withdrawal is blocked.
