How Much Should You Contribute to Your 401(k) to Get the Full Employer Match?

By TheFinanceBase Team 7 min read

Contribute the percentage of eligible pay your own 401(k) plan says it will match, up to that plan’s employee-contribution cap. There is no universal “full match” percentage. For example, if a plan matches 50 cents for every dollar you contribute on the first 5% of salary, you must contribute 5% of eligible compensation to receive the maximum match. The employer contribution in that case is 2.5% of salary—not 5%.

Your summary plan description (SPD), plan document or plan administrator is the authority. The IRS states: “The plan document and the summary plan description will state the conditions for you to receive matching contributions.”

What “full employer match” means

A 401(k) match has two separate rates:

  • Your employee contribution rate: the percentage of eligible compensation you defer from each paycheck.
  • The employer matching rate: the portion of your contribution your employer adds, subject to the plan’s limit.

To get the full match, you generally contribute enough to reach the plan’s stated employee-deferral cap. Once you reach that cap, contributing more may increase your own retirement savings but will not increase the regular match under that formula.

Plans can use different formulas, compensation definitions and calculation periods. A percentage that is correct for one employer can be wrong for another, so do not assume that contributing 5% is always enough.

How to calculate the contribution you need

Step 1: Find the match formula

Look in the SPD, enrollment materials or benefits portal for wording such as “50% of the first 5%,” “100% of the first 3%,” or a tiered formula. Identify both the matching rate and the employee contribution level at which the match stops increasing.

Step 2: Identify the employee cap

The employee cap is the contribution percentage or dollar amount you must reach for the maximum regular match. In a formula matching 50% of contributions up to 5% of salary, the employee cap is 5%.

Step 3: Apply the rate to eligible compensation

Use the compensation definition in your plan, not necessarily your headline salary. The plan may define eligible compensation to include or exclude bonuses, overtime, commissions, differentials or other pay. It may also calculate the match using each paycheck rather than your annual compensation.

Step 4: Check whether the match is capped per paycheck or annually

Some plans calculate matching contributions each payroll period. Others use an annual calculation or provide a year-end “true-up.” This distinction matters if your pay varies, you change your contribution rate, you receive a bonus, or you reach the annual employee limit before December.

IRS example: 50% match on the first 5%

The IRS uses a formula that matches 50 cents for every dollar an employee contributes, up to employee contributions equal to 5% of salary. Under that formula:

Employee contribution Employer match Result
Less than 5% of salary 50% of the employee contribution Match is below the maximum
5% of salary 2.5% of salary Full match is reached
More than 5% of salary Still capped at 2.5% of salary under this formula Extra employee contributions do not earn additional regular matching dollars

For the IRS’s $30,000 annual-salary illustration, a $1,200 employee contribution receives a $600 match. When the employee contributes $1,500—5% of $30,000—the employer match reaches its maximum of $750, which is half of $1,500. These figures illustrate that particular formula; they are not a universal plan rule or a national average.

How much that means from each paycheck

After you find the required annual percentage, convert it to your payroll election. For a steady salary paid evenly through the year:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Multiply annual eligible compensation by the required contribution percentage.
  2. Divide the annual contribution by the number of paychecks.
  3. Set your 401(k) election to that percentage, or to the dollar amount your payroll system permits.

For example, under the 50%-up-to-5% formula, an employee earning $30,000 annually needs $1,500 in employee contributions over the year. If paid 26 times, that is approximately $57.69 per paycheck ($1,500 ÷ 26), before considering payroll rounding or changes in compensation. The plan’s percentage election may be more reliable than a fixed dollar amount when pay changes.

Five plan details that can change the answer

1. A tiered or multi-level formula

Some plans match at one rate for an initial portion of your contribution and at another rate above it. For example, a plan might match dollar-for-dollar up to one percentage and then match a lower percentage up to a second limit. You must contribute through the highest employee-contribution tier that the plan matches to receive the full amount.

2. The definition of eligible compensation

The plan document controls which pay is included. Ask specifically whether the match uses base salary only or also includes bonuses, overtime, commissions and other compensation. If a bonus is excluded, increasing your deferral on that bonus may not create matching dollars. If it is included, a payroll-period calculation can produce a different result from a base-salary estimate.

3. Payroll-period matching versus an annual calculation

A plan that matches each paycheck can produce less than an annual calculation if you contribute unevenly during the year. This can happen when you contribute a high percentage early, stop contributions after reaching the employee limit, or have a large change in pay.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. A year-end true-up

A true-up is an additional employer contribution that reconciles your total annual match with the formula after the year ends. Not every plan provides one. If your plan lacks a true-up, stopping contributions after reaching an annual employee limit can leave later paychecks without a match, even if your total annual contribution is high enough under an annual calculation.

5. Vesting rules

The account statement may show an employer contribution before you have earned the right to keep all of it. Matching contributions in a traditional plan can be subject to a vesting schedule. Safe-harbor plans generally require employer contributions to be fully vested when made, with special rules for some qualified automatic contribution arrangement (QACA) plans. Check the SPD before counting unvested matching money as yours if you may change jobs.

What happens if you front-load contributions?

Front-loading means contributing a large percentage early in the year and then reducing or stopping contributions later. It can work well when the plan calculates the match annually and provides a true-up. It can reduce your total match when matching is calculated per paycheck and there is no true-up, because later pay periods may have no employee contribution to match.

Before front-loading, ask the administrator:

  • Is the match calculated each payroll period, annually, or both?
  • Does the plan make a year-end true-up?
  • What happens if I reach the annual employee-deferral limit before the final paycheck?
  • Are bonuses and irregular pay included in the matching calculation?

The 2026 employee contribution limit is separate from the match

The IRS lists the basic 2026 401(k) elective-deferral limit as $24,500. Eligible participants may be allowed additional catch-up contributions under applicable rules and the plan’s terms. This is the limit on your elective employee deferrals; it is distinct from employer matching contributions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reaching the $24,500 employee limit does not automatically mean you received the maximum match. Whether it does depends on your compensation, the plan’s cap and the timing of your contributions. Conversely, you may reach the match cap long before reaching the annual employee limit.

A practical worksheet for your own plan

Question Where to find the answer Why it matters
What is the matching rate? SPD, plan document or benefits portal Determines how much the employer adds for each dollar you contribute
At what employee percentage or dollar amount does matching stop? Match formula in the SPD Sets the contribution needed for the full regular match
What compensation counts? Definition of eligible compensation Determines the salary base used in the calculation
Is the match per paycheck or annual? Plan administrator or contribution section of the SPD Affects uneven contributions and front-loading
Is there a year-end true-up? Plan administrator or plan document May restore missed matching amounts after an annual reconciliation
When are matching dollars vested? Vesting schedule and plan type Determines how much you keep if you leave the employer

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Assuming every plan matches up to 5%

The 5% figure belongs to the IRS’s 50%-up-to-5% example. Your plan may use a lower or higher employee cap, a dollar limit, or multiple tiers. Use the formula in your own SPD.

Confusing a 5% contribution with a 5% employer match

Under the IRS example, contributing 5% earns a 2.5% employer match because the employer pays 50% of the employee contribution. The two percentages describe different sides of the transaction.

Ignoring compensation definitions

Calculating from base salary alone can be inaccurate when the plan includes or excludes bonuses, overtime or other pay. Verify the plan’s definition before setting a dollar-per-paycheck target.

Stopping contributions after reaching an annual target

If the plan matches per paycheck and has no true-up, stopping early can forfeit matching opportunities in later pay periods. Confirm the timing rules first.

Treating the displayed employer balance as immediately yours

Unvested matching contributions can be forfeited when you leave. Review the vesting schedule rather than assuming every employer dollar is nonforfeitable.

How to get a definitive answer from your administrator

  1. Open the latest SPD or plan document in your benefits portal.
  2. Search for “matching contributions,” “employer match,” “eligible compensation,” “true-up,” and “vesting.”
  3. Write down the matching rate, employee cap, compensation definition and calculation period.
  4. Ask whether the plan has a year-end true-up and how it handles reaching the annual employee limit early.
  5. Check your paystub or account history after the first few payrolls to confirm that the employer contribution matches the stated formula.

Request the answer in writing when the formula is complicated or your compensation varies. The plan document, not a general online rule of thumb, governs your benefit.

Bottom line for setting your contribution

Set your employee contribution at least high enough to reach your plan’s matching cap, provided that contribution fits your broader budget. Then verify the compensation and timing rules so that payroll changes, bonuses or an early annual-limit cutoff do not reduce the match you expected. The exact percentage comes from your plan’s formula—not from a national standard.
