How much retirement income do you need beyond Social Security?

By TheFinanceBase Team 9 min read

There is no universal dollar amount. The amount you need beyond Social Security is the difference between your annual retirement spending and the income you can count on from Social Security, pensions, annuities and other reliable sources. Estimate your spending in today’s dollars, obtain the benefit on your Social Security Statement, subtract all guaranteed income, and then stress-test the remaining gap for taxes, inflation, health care, market losses and a long retirement.

Published benchmarks put total retirement income at roughly 55% to 80% of pre-retirement income. In many benchmark cases, savings must replace about 30% to 45% of pre-retirement income after Social Security, but your result can be materially higher or lower. Lower-income households often need a larger percentage because more earnings pay for essentials; higher-income households may need a smaller percentage but a larger dollar amount.

Start with the income gap, not a rule of thumb

Use this equation:

Annual retirement income needed beyond Social Security = planned annual retirement spending − Social Security − pensions − annuities − other dependable income.

If your planned spending is $60,000 and Social Security plus a pension provides $35,000, your initial gap is $25,000 a year. That gap is the amount your portfolio, work income, home equity or another source must cover. It is not the same as the account balance you need; the required balance depends on when withdrawals begin, how long they last, investment returns, inflation and how flexibly you can reduce spending.

Percentage guidelines are useful for a first estimate, but a budget based on your own life is more reliable. A household that spends 75% of current income may need much less than one that spends nearly all of its pay, even if both earn the same salary.

Build a retirement budget in today’s dollars

List the expenses you expect after work stops, using current prices first. Separate costs that must be paid from those you could postpone or cut after a bad market year.

Budget area Items to include Planning question
Housing Mortgage or rent, property tax, insurance, utilities, repairs, dues and modifications Will the mortgage be gone, or will housing costs continue for life?
Food and household Groceries, dining out, supplies and personal care Which spending is essential and which is adjustable?
Transportation Vehicle payments, fuel, maintenance, insurance, public transit and travel to see family Will you replace a car or reduce driving?
Health care Premiums, deductibles, prescriptions, dental, vision and out-of-pocket treatment How will costs change before and after Medicare eligibility?
Taxes Federal, state and local income tax, property tax and taxes on withdrawals Are your estimates gross or spendable after tax?
Lifestyle Travel, hobbies, gifts, memberships, entertainment and charitable giving What would you cut first if investments fell?
Debt and one-time costs Credit balances, education help, a new roof, vehicle replacement or family support Which irregular bills need a dedicated reserve?

Convert irregular bills to an annual amount. For example, a $9,000 roof expected every 15 years represents $600 per year before inflation. Keep a separate cash reserve for costs that cannot be averaged comfortably, such as a near-term vehicle or home repair.

Then divide expected annual retirement spending by current annual income. The result is your personal replacement rate. Someone earning $80,000 and planning to spend $56,000 has a 70% replacement target; someone earning the same amount but planning to spend $72,000 has a 90% target.

What published replacement-rate benchmarks actually say

These figures are starting points, not promises. They describe broad populations and assumptions rather than your household.

Source and date Benchmark What it implies for savings
U.S. Department of Labor Employee Benefits Security Administration, current worksheet Uses an average 80% total replacement assumption and about 40% Social Security replacement for an average wage earner Approximately 40% of pre-retirement income would come from retirement savings in that average case
Fidelity Investments, 2025 Most people need about 55% to 80% of pre-tax, pre-retirement income to maintain their lifestyle Fidelity’s baseline says savings should generate about 45% of pre-tax, pre-retirement income after Social Security
Vanguard retirement outlook guidance A typical person may need about 70% of annual working income; approximately 40% of that amount comes from Social Security About 30% of annual working income would come from personal savings in the typical case

The Department of Labor worksheet instructs users to total expected expenses, divide by current annual salary to set a personal replacement rate, and enter the amount from their Social Security Statement. Its “in addition to Social Security” wording matters: the savings estimate is not a second full replacement of your paycheck.

Why income level changes the percentage

Fidelity’s 2025 illustrations show the difference. For a $50,000 earner, an approximately 80% target equals $40,000 of retirement income. Fidelity estimates Social Security at about 35% of income, or $17,500, leaving roughly $22,500—about 45% of pay—for savings and other resources. For a $200,000 earner, an approximately 60% target equals $120,000. An estimated $32,000 of Social Security, or 16% of income, leaves about $88,000—roughly 44% of pay—to be supplied by savings and other resources. The percentages are illustrations, not individualized benefit estimates.

Calculate your personal gap step by step

  1. Set the spending target. Add the annual amounts from your retirement budget, including taxes, health care, travel, debt payments and one-time costs.
  2. Choose the retirement date. A retirement at 62 has a different savings burden and benefit amount than one at full retirement age or 70.
  3. Read your Social Security Statement. Use the projected monthly benefit for the claiming age you are evaluating. Multiply it by 12 to annualize it. Do not substitute a generic online estimate for your statement.
  4. Add other dependable income. Include a pension only to the extent its payment formula, survivor option and cost-of-living treatment are clear. Include an annuity payment after checking whether it is fixed, inflation-linked, joint-and-survivor or dependent on an insurer’s claims-paying ability.
  5. Subtract guaranteed income from spending. The result is the annual gap before considering portfolio withdrawals or flexible work.
  6. Express the gap both ways. Divide the gap by current income to get a savings-replacement percentage, and keep the dollar figure because percentages can hide large differences between households.
  7. Run alternate cases. Recalculate for an earlier retirement, a later Social Security claim, higher medical costs, a longer life and a lower Social Security benefit.

For a monthly Social Security estimate of $2,200, annual benefits are $26,400. If planned spending is $58,000 and a pension pays $12,000 annually, the initial gap is $19,600. The next question is how much of that gap should come from a portfolio versus work, an annuity or home equity.

Retirement age and claiming age can change the gap sharply

Fidelity says Social Security can start at 62, rises at full retirement age—usually 67—and rises further when delayed to 70. Its example shows the savings share at 55% when retiring at 62, 45% at 67 and 40% when working to 70. Delaying can therefore reduce the amount a portfolio must provide, while retiring early creates more years to fund before a larger benefit begins.

Vanguard states that each year of delay beyond full retirement age to 70 can increase benefits at an annualized rate of about 8%, subject to the individual’s claiming circumstances. That increase is valuable lifetime income, but delaying also means paying living expenses from work or assets for longer. Compare the break-even age, survivor needs, health, tax effects and your spouse’s benefit rather than treating 70 as automatically best.

The Social Security Administration’s 2025 Trustees summary projects that combined Old-Age and Survivors Insurance and Disability Insurance trust-fund reserves could be depleted by 2034. Under the report’s assumptions, ongoing payroll taxes and other income would then cover about 81% of scheduled program costs. This is a program-level projection, not a forecast of your personal check. For a conservative plan, run a case in which your projected benefit is reduced by the percentage you choose rather than assuming either a full payment or a complete loss.

Compare the scenarios that matter most

Scenario axis Why it changes the answer What to model
Essential versus discretionary spending Essential bills cannot easily be cut after a market decline Fund necessities with dependable income where practical; make travel and hobbies flexible
Retirement and claiming age Earlier retirement lengthens withdrawals and may precede a larger Social Security benefit Compare at least one earlier and one later retirement/claiming combination
Income level Replacement percentages vary because Social Security replaces a different share of earnings Use your spending ratio and dollar gap, not a population average alone
Guaranteed income versus investments Guaranteed payments reduce longevity risk but may limit liquidity or inheritances Match dependable income to core bills and retain an emergency reserve
Health and long-term care Premiums, treatment and extended care can persist for decades Run ordinary-health and high-cost cases separately
Taxes and inflation A nominal benefit may buy less, and withdrawals may be taxable Project expenses and income in future dollars and estimate after-tax cash flow
Spending flexibility Reducing withdrawals after losses can improve portfolio durability Write down which expenses pause, shrink or continue during a downturn

Ways to fund the amount beyond Social Security

Continue working or retire later

Additional work can add contributions, allow investments more time to grow, shorten the withdrawal period and support delayed Social Security. Even part-time earnings can cover a specific bill and reduce early portfolio withdrawals. Model taxes, employer health coverage, the possibility that work ends involuntarily and whether your earnings change the benefit calculation.

Use portfolio withdrawals deliberately

Fidelity cites an initial withdrawal guideline of 4% to 5%. Treat that as a planning range, not a guarantee: the sustainable amount depends on valuation, asset mix, fees, inflation, taxes, longevity and the order of returns. A $500,000 portfolio at 4% would provide $20,000 in the first year before tax; later withdrawals need a written inflation and market-response rule.

Vanguard describes reducing withdrawals to 2% to 3% in downturns as one flexible approach. Such a rule can protect the portfolio, but it requires enough discretionary spending to cut. Decide in advance whether the reduction applies to travel, gifts, home projects or another category, and how you will restore spending after recovery.

Buy guaranteed income for essential bills

Social Security, a pension and an income annuity can cover rent, food, utilities and insurance for life. Vanguard describes an annuity as exchanging assets today for future lifetime income. The trade-off is that funds generally become less available for emergencies or heirs, and contract guarantees depend on the issuing insurer. Review inflation adjustments, survivor benefits, surrender terms, fees and the insurer’s financial strength before committing money.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use home equity carefully

Downsizing, selling a home, a home-equity loan or a reverse mortgage may supplement income, but each can affect housing security, taxes, borrowing costs and what heirs receive. Model the transaction costs, a future move, property upkeep and the possibility that you need the home for long-term care.

Keep flexible work as a reserve

Consulting, seasonal work or a delayed full retirement can fill a temporary gap after a market decline. Do not count uncertain income as guaranteed until you have considered demand, health, transportation, taxes and the risk that the work disappears.

Stress-test before choosing a savings target

  • Longevity: Test a life that reaches well beyond average life expectancy, especially when a survivor depends on your income.
  • Inflation: Increase food, insurance, utilities and medical costs separately when they are likely to rise faster than general prices.
  • Health care: Include premiums, deductibles, prescriptions, dental and vision costs, then add a high-cost medical case and possible long-term care.
  • Taxes: Estimate after-tax spending and withdrawals. Tax treatment differs by account type, state and the composition of your income.
  • Market sequence: Apply a large decline in the first years of retirement and test your spending rule rather than relying only on a long-run average return.
  • Social Security: Use your statement as the base case and a reduced-benefit sensitivity case if you want protection against policy changes.
  • Housing and family: Include repairs, a move, support for relatives and any debt that may survive into retirement.
  • Flexibility: Identify expenses you can cut and the minimum annual amount that still supports a safe, acceptable life.

A practical decision rule

After completing the calculations, classify the result. If dependable income covers essential expenses and the portfolio covers flexible spending with room for bad markets, your plan has useful resilience. If the gap is large, inflexible or dependent on optimistic returns, change one of the major levers: save more, retire later, claim later, reduce spending, add dependable income or keep work available. Recalculate whenever your retirement date, housing, health, marital status or Social Security estimate changes.

The answer to “how much do I need beyond Social Security?” is therefore your own annual gap, not a headline percentage. Benchmarks of roughly 30% to 45% of pre-retirement income from savings are reasonable starting cases, while the budget, claiming decision and stress tests determine whether that range fits your household.
