For a new computer in 2026, 8 GB is a basic everyday-use floor, 16 GB is the sensible target for most work and gaming, and 32 GB is worthwhile for demanding creative work or heavy multitasking. Microsoft lists 4 GB as Windows 11’s installation minimum, but that is a compatibility floor rather than a comfortable buying recommendation. Your ideal capacity depends on the applications, projects, games and background tasks you run at the same time.
RAM is your computer’s short-term working memory. When available memory runs low, the operating system has to move data to slower storage, which can cause pauses and sluggish app switching. Adding RAM helps only when capacity is the constraint; it will not fix a weak processor, an overloaded graphics card, thermal throttling or a slow drive.

Why the minimum is not the same as “enough”
Microsoft’s Windows 11 system-requirements page lists 4 GB of RAM. That number answers whether a device meets the operating system’s stated floor; it does not promise a responsive experience with modern applications. Microsoft also notes that individual features and apps can require more memory.
#1 Best Overall

- Optimized DDR5 compatibility: Best for 12th Gen Intel Core and AMD Ryzen 7000 Series processors — Intel XMP 3.0 and AMD EXPO also supported on the same RAM module
- Trusted Micron Quality: Backed by 42 years of memory expertise, this DDR5 RAM is rigorously tested at both component and module levels, ensuring top performance and reliability
- ECC Type = Non-ECC, Form Factor = SODIMM, Pin Count = 262-Pin, PC Speed = PC5-44800, Voltage = 1.1V, Rank And Configuration = 1Rx8
Microsoft’s consumer memory guide separately suggests at least 4 GB for basic browsing, documents and streaming, then recommends 8 GB for keeping a device running well over the long term. The distinction matters when comparing a low-priced computer: a configuration that technically runs Windows may leave little headroom for browser tabs, updates, security software and video calls.
Think of capacities as tiers:
- 4 GB: an operating-system and very-light-use floor. It is difficult to leave much room for concurrent modern applications.
- 8 GB: a reasonable entry point for light browsing, documents and streaming, especially when the workload stays simple.
- 16 GB: the balanced choice for most new general-purpose computers, office work and mainstream gaming.
- 32 GB: useful headroom for multitasking, demanding games, content creation and larger files.
- More than 32 GB: justified by a specific workload such as large video projects, virtual machines, development environments or data-heavy software, not by a generic speed expectation.
RAM for everyday use
When 8 GB is adequate
Eight gigabytes can handle the light activities in Microsoft’s guidance: ordinary web browsing, document editing and streaming. It is most comfortable when you do not keep dozens of tabs, large spreadsheets, collaboration tools and video calls active simultaneously.
For a budget laptop that will mainly perform those tasks, 8 GB can be financially sensible. Check whether the memory is upgradeable before buying, because an inexpensive machine with soldered 8 GB may have no practical path to 16 GB later.

Why 4 GB often feels cramped
With 4 GB, the operating system and background services consume a substantial share before you open your own applications. Once active data exceeds available RAM, the computer relies more heavily on storage as a temporary extension. Storage is slower than RAM, so switching tasks can become jerky even when the processor is otherwise adequate.
RAM for work: size the actual workload
“Work” is not one technical category. A browser-based office role, a software-development environment, a virtual machine and a video-editing workstation have very different memory patterns.
Office, school and browser-heavy work
For documents, email, web applications and video calls, 8 GB can work when usage is light. Sixteen gigabytes is a safer purchase for people who keep many tabs and apps open or who want several years of useful life without carefully closing programs.

Those figures apply to the specified Premiere versions and workflows; they are not a universal rule for every editor, effects package or 4K project. High-resolution footage, multicamera timelines, effects and simultaneous encoding can all increase the practical requirement.
Development, virtual machines and data work
Integrated development environments, containers, local databases and virtual machines each reserve memory. If you regularly run more than one environment at once, 32 GB can prevent the constant closing and reopening of tools that occurs at lower capacities. Large datasets and specialized analytical software may justify more, but their own documentation should set the target.
Do not buy extra RAM solely because a specification sheet says “professional.” Identify the largest project, the number of concurrent tools and the memory guidance for each application, then add reasonable headroom.
RAM for gaming
Why 16 GB is the starting point
Microsoft’s Windows gaming guidance, published April 9, 2026, describes 16 GB as a practical starting point for most players. That capacity covers the game plus the operating system and ordinary background services for a broad range of current systems.

- High performance DDR4 Laptop Memory designed for PC enthusiasts and gamers
- Exceptional performance with a frequency speed of 3200MHz (PC4-25600), and backwards compatible with lower frequencies (2933MHz, 2666MHz, 2400MHz and 2133MHz)
- DDR4 260 Pin Non-ECC SODIMM, Timing 22-22-22, CAS Latency of 22, 1.2 Volts
When 32 GB makes sense
Microsoft says 32 GB helps when you game while keeping Discord, browser tabs or streaming tools open. It is also a sensible choice for a new gaming build intended to remain capable as games and background software grow more demanding.
Thirty-two gigabytes is not a promise of higher frame rates. If the graphics processor, processor, game settings or cooling system is the limiting factor, increasing RAM will not remove that bottleneck. A game’s own minimum and recommended specifications remain more relevant than a blanket capacity rule.
Diagnosing stutter correctly
Microsoft notes that choppiness can result from low RAM, heavy CPU or GPU load, or overheating. Check memory use and temperatures while the problem occurs instead of assuming RAM is responsible. If memory is not close to full but the graphics processor is saturated, a RAM upgrade is unlikely to solve the issue.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe Copilot+ PC memory caveat
Microsoft’s Windows specifications list 16 GB of DDR5 or LPDDR5 as the minimum memory for Copilot+ PCs. Standard Windows 11 requirements list 4 GB. These numbers describe different scopes: the 16 GB requirement applies to the Copilot+ hardware category and its specified experiences, not to every Windows 11 computer and not to every local artificial-intelligence application.

When comparing an AI-branded laptop, verify whether it is actually classified as a Copilot+ PC and whether the memory is upgradeable. A label alone does not tell you the device’s future expansion options.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to decide what to buy
- List the programs you actually use. Include your browser, communication tools, creative applications, games, virtual machines and any software that runs in the background.
- Find the current requirements for the exact versions. Separate minimum from recommended memory, and match recommendations to your resolution, project size or game settings.
- Count simultaneous use. Gaming plus a browser and voice chat is different from gaming alone; editing while exporting is different from editing a single clip.
- Choose headroom appropriate to the purchase horizon. Eight gigabytes can suit a low-cost light-use machine, while 16 GB is the safer general-purpose baseline and 32 GB is justified by heavier multitasking.
- Check the platform design. Apple silicon uses unified memory, while many PCs use removable DIMMs or soldered LPDDR memory. Capacity, speed and upgrade paths differ.
- Confirm the rest of the configuration. RAM cannot compensate for an unsuitable processor, graphics processor, storage device or cooling system.
Before buying an upgrade kit
A compatible RAM upgrade is a device-specific purchase, not a universal accessory. Before ordering, identify the exact computer or motherboard model and verify:
- Memory generation, such as DDR4 or DDR5, and the required speed range.
- Form factor: desktop DIMM or laptop SO-DIMM.
- Maximum supported capacity and the number of memory slots.
- Whether any or all memory is soldered to the motherboard.
- Whether an existing module must be replaced rather than adding another one.
- Firmware or manufacturer restrictions that affect supported modules.
Microsoft notes that some computers below the Windows 11 4 GB floor may have upgrade options, but that observation does not establish upgradeability for your particular machine or identify a compatible module. Use the manufacturer’s service manual or a device-specific compatibility tool before spending money.
When more RAM will not solve the problem
- High CPU usage: A processor at or near full load can make applications slow even when plenty of RAM is free.
- GPU limits: Game frame rates and rendering performance may be constrained by the graphics processor or video memory.
- Overheating: Thermal throttling can cause sudden slowdowns that a memory upgrade cannot fix.
- Slow storage: A nearly full or aging drive can make booting and application launches sluggish.
- Software faults: A memory leak or misbehaving extension may consume RAM until the application is restarted; adding capacity may only delay the symptom.
Use the operating system’s memory monitor while reproducing the slowdown. An upgrade is most defensible when memory use approaches the installed capacity and storage activity rises because the system is paging.
A cost-conscious capacity strategy
For personal-finance purposes, avoid paying for capacity that your workload cannot use, but also avoid a false economy that forces an early replacement. A practical strategy is:
- Choose 8 GB only for clearly light use and only after checking whether future expansion is possible.
- Choose 16 GB for most new everyday, study, office and gaming computers.
- Choose 32 GB when you already know you will multitask heavily, edit 4K media, run several development environments or keep streaming and communication tools open while gaming.
- Choose more than 32 GB only when your software documentation or measured workload supports it.
Capacity is just one part of a computer’s value. Compare the complete configuration, warranty, upgradeability and expected replacement period rather than selecting the largest RAM number in isolation.
Bottom line
Use 8 GB as the entry point for light everyday computing, 16 GB as the balanced default for most work and gaming, and 32 GB when demanding creative projects or sustained multitasking justify the expense. Treat 4 GB as a Windows 11 floor, not a comfortable target. Let your actual software, concurrent tasks and device upgrade path determine the final choice.
