There is no regulator-approved percentage that fits every investor. The right size for one growth stock depends on the goal the portfolio serves, when you need the money, how much loss you can financially withstand, how much volatility you can tolerate, and what else you already own. The SEC’s investor guidance treats allocation as personal rather than prescribing a universal limit. A single-stock position should therefore be a deliberate risk decision, not a default percentage.
This is general educational information, not a personalized allocation recommendation. Your household finances, tax situation and complete holdings would be needed to determine a suitable amount.

Why one growth stock can dominate your results
Owning one company creates company-specific concentration. The SEC explains that when you buy one company’s shares, your financial performance depends exclusively on that stock. Management decisions, product success, consumer demand, economic changes, costs and investor preferences can all affect the company and its share price. See the SEC’s Introduction to Investing.

Growth companies may have expanding sales, a large addressable market or an expectation of rising future earnings, but those expectations can disappoint. Stocks are volatile and there is no guarantee that a company will grow or perform well. The SEC’s guide puts the trade-off plainly: “Stocks hit home runs, but also strike out.”

A large position can hurt in two ways. A company-specific setback can reduce the value of the holding, and the loss can arrive when you need cash for a goal. The same percentage may be tolerable in a retirement account decades from use but inappropriate for a house deposit due next year.
Start with the portfolio’s job, not a stock percentage
Before deciding how much to put in one company, identify what the portfolio is intended to fund and when the money will be needed. The SEC’s Beginners’ Guide to Asset Allocation, Diversification, and Rebalancing identifies time horizon and risk tolerance as central inputs.
Match the position to the time horizon
- Near-term spending: Money needed soon generally has less capacity for a volatile individual stock. A sharp decline could force you to sell at an unfavorable time.
- Long-term goals: A longer horizon may make temporary volatility easier to tolerate, but it does not guarantee recovery or protect against a permanent business failure.
- Multiple goals: Separate the assets assigned to each goal. A growth-stock position intended for a distant goal should not be treated as the cash reserve for an imminent expense.
Define both kinds of risk tolerance
Risk tolerance has two parts: your willingness to experience losses and your ability to absorb them financially. You may be psychologically comfortable with a 40% price decline but unable to meet expenses after such a loss. Conversely, your finances may withstand volatility while you are likely to sell in panic. A position is only suitable when both dimensions are considered.

Write the maximum loss you can live with
Instead of starting with “What percentage should I buy?”, ask what a severe decline would do to the goal. If a one-stock position fell substantially, could you still pay essential bills, keep an emergency reserve and meet the goal on schedule? If not, the position is too large for that purpose, regardless of how attractive the growth story appears.

Map your entire exposure before sizing the stock
The percentage shown in one brokerage account may understate your real exposure. Review all investable assets and sources of company risk before setting a target.
- Funds: Broad mutual funds and exchange-traded funds can already contain the same company. Add the stock’s value inside those funds to your direct holding when assessing concentration.
- Industry overlap: Several companies in one sector may fall together even when they are different businesses.
- Employer stock and compensation: Your salary, options or restricted shares may already depend on the same company or industry. A direct purchase adds to that economic exposure.
- Household accounts: Consider taxable accounts, retirement plans and a spouse or partner’s investments together. The SEC sources support looking across the portfolio, but do not provide a universal method for calculating a household-wide percentage.
- Other risky assets: Speculative investments, concentrated real estate or debt obligations can reduce your ability to withstand a stock loss even if the stock itself is a modest part of one account.
Make a simple inventory with each holding’s current value, the companies and industries it exposes you to, and the goal attached to the account. This reveals whether a position that looks small in isolation is large in the portfolio that actually supports your household.
Use a personal concentration rule, not a supposed SEC limit
The SEC does not establish a universal maximum percentage for one growth stock. Any numerical ceiling you choose is a personal rule of thumb that needs an explanation based on your goal, horizon, risk capacity and other holdings. Presenting a particular number as an official standard would be misleading.
A useful written policy can specify:
- the account and goal for which the position is allowed;
- the maximum percentage of the relevant portfolio, measured by current market value;
- whether the limit includes indirect exposure through funds and employer compensation;
- the conditions that trigger a review; and
- how new contributions or sales will bring the position back toward its target.
Choose the policy before a large gain or loss makes the decision emotional. The percentage should reflect what you can continue to hold through a severe decline, not the return you hope to earn.

Compare ways to limit dependence on one company
| Approach | Breadth of holdings | How it changes single-stock dependence | Main decision to make |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct single-company holding | One company | Portfolio results are highly tied to that company’s management, products, demand, costs and share-price sentiment. | Whether the goal and risk capacity justify concentrated exposure. |
| Several companies across industries | Multiple companies and business drivers | A setback at one company may have less effect than it would in a one-stock portfolio, although broad market declines can still affect many holdings. | How much overlap remains among industries and economic risks. |
| Broad pooled fund | Many securities, potentially across industries or asset classes | Spreads dependence across holdings and can make diversification easier. | Whether the fund is genuinely broad rather than dominated by a narrow theme or sector. |
| Narrow sector or stock-type fund | Several holdings but within a limited area | Reduces dependence on one issuer but can remain concentrated in a sector, theme or company type. | Whether the fund’s mandate creates a different form of concentration. |
The SEC’s Asset Allocation and Diversification guidance notes that pooled funds can make it easier to own many investments, while also warning that a narrowly focused fund may not be diversified. Diversification across and within asset classes can reduce dependence on any single investment; the SEC and other U.S. financial authorities discuss this in the October 5, 2026 World Investor Week 2026 Investor Bulletin.
A practical process for deciding the position size
- Assign the account to a goal. Record what the money is for and the date or range when withdrawals may begin.
- Calculate the relevant portfolio. Include accounts and indirect holdings that support the same goal. Decide whether employer stock and household assets belong in the concentration calculation.
- Stress-test the position. Consider a large decline, a long period of underperformance and a permanent loss caused by business failure. Ask what would happen to the goal, cash flow and behavior in each case.
- Set a written ceiling and review band. State the maximum weight you can accept and the condition that prompts action. Avoid changing the rule solely because the share price recently rose or fell.
- Check the rest of the asset mix. The stock should fit the portfolio’s overall exposure to stocks, bonds, cash and other assets. Asset allocation still needs to match the goal and risk tolerance.
- Implement gradually if that improves discipline. Staging purchases can reduce the risk of committing all intended capital immediately, but it does not eliminate company or market risk and may leave cash uninvested.
- Document the thesis and the invalidation points. Write what business facts would make you reconsider the holding, rather than relying only on a target price or a headline.
Rebalancing: what to do when the stock gets too large
A position can exceed its intended weight simply because it appreciated. The SEC describes rebalancing as returning a portfolio toward its intended allocation. Methods include selling an overweight holding, buying underweighted assets or directing new contributions to underweighted holdings. Details and examples appear in the SEC’s Beginners’ Guide to Asset Allocation, Diversification, and Rebalancing.
Choose a review method
- Calendar review: Check the allocation at a set interval and act when it has moved outside your policy.
- Threshold review: Act when the position exceeds the written band, even if the calendar date has not arrived.
- Contribution-based correction: Send new money to underweighted holdings when selling would create an undesirable tax bill or transaction cost.
Rebalancing is not a prediction that the stock will fall. It is risk maintenance. Selling can create taxable gains and transaction fees; buying can also incur costs. Consider the account type, tax basis, trading costs and any applicable restrictions before acting. A tax professional can address your circumstances.
Do not confuse a rising price with a safer position
When a growth stock doubles, its percentage of the portfolio may rise even though the business risk has not fallen. Recalculate the weight using current market values. A decision to keep the larger position should be an explicit revision of your policy, not an accidental consequence of price appreciation.

Common mistakes that produce excessive concentration
Using a famous percentage as a shortcut
Asset-allocation examples in SEC educational material illustrate how a portfolio’s stock-and-bond mix can drift and require rebalancing. They are not recommendations for the percentage invested in one stock. Treating those examples as a single-stock limit confuses two different decisions.
Counting only the brokerage account on screen
Ignoring retirement plans, funds, employer shares or a partner’s account can hide overlapping exposure. Review the economic risk, not just the account label.
Assuming a fund label guarantees diversification
A sector, theme or narrowly defined “growth” fund may hold many securities while remaining exposed to one industry or factor. Read the fund’s holdings and mandate rather than inferring breadth from the word “fund.”

Taxes matter, but an oversized position can expose a goal to a loss that is larger than the eventual tax cost of reducing it. Compare the likely tax and trading cost with the financial consequence of remaining concentrated.

Making the decision from conviction alone
Confidence in management or a product is not the same as the ability to absorb a loss. A strong thesis should sit inside a risk policy that survives disagreement, delays and unexpected events.
When a single growth stock may be incompatible with the goal
A concentrated position deserves special caution when the money is needed soon, when you have little emergency cash, when your income already depends on the company or sector, when a loss would force borrowing, or when you know you would sell after a sharp decline. In those circumstances, reducing company-specific exposure may be more important than pursuing the stock’s upside.
Conversely, a long horizon and strong financial capacity can make volatility easier to bear, but they do not turn one company into a diversified portfolio. The decision remains a trade-off between potential upside and dependence on a single business.
Questions to ask before placing the order
- What goal is this money assigned to, and when could I need it?
- What percentage of the complete goal portfolio will this stock represent after the purchase?
- Do funds, employer compensation or household accounts add exposure to the same company or industry?
- Could I meet the goal if the stock suffered a severe decline or never recovered?
- What specific business development would make me reduce or exit the position?
- When will I review the weight, and what fees or tax consequences could rebalancing create?
Answer these questions in writing before buying. If the answers are unclear, the position size is not yet a reasoned allocation.
