1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThere is no evidence-based universal percentage of a portfolio that belongs in a contra fund. The appropriate amount—possibly zero—depends on your goal, time horizon, ability to tolerate losses, existing stock and fund exposure, the scheme’s mandate, costs, taxes and rebalancing plan. Treat a contra fund as a strategy that may or may not fill a specific role, not as a standard portfolio bucket with a preset weight.
What a contra fund is—and what it is not
A contra fund follows a contrarian approach: the manager invests against prevailing market sentiment, seeking companies or sectors that appear temporarily out of favour but may recover over a long period. In India, these funds are equity-oriented mutual-fund schemes governed by a stated mandate in the scheme information document (SID).

“Contra” describes the investment strategy. It does not guarantee a return, define your personal suitability, or tell you how large the holding should be. A fund can remain out of favour for years, and a contrarian thesis can be wrong. The strategy can therefore experience long stretches of volatility or lag other equity approaches even when the broader market rises.

Why no single percentage works for every investor
The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) identifies financial goals, risk tolerance, time horizon and market outlook as inputs to asset allocation. It also points to diversification across asset types as a way to reduce the effect of poor performance in any one investment. Investor.gov’s asset-allocation guidance similarly explains that a longer horizon can make it easier to withstand volatility, while a short horizon generally calls for less risk.
Those principles produce different answers for different people:
- Goal: Money needed for a near-term house deposit, tuition bill or emergency reserve usually cannot depend on a volatile equity strategy. Retirement money decades away may have more capacity for equity risk, provided you can stay invested.
- Time horizon: A long horizon gives a contrarian thesis time to play out. If you may need the money soon, a prolonged period of underperformance can force a sale at an unfavourable time.
- Risk tolerance and capacity: Tolerance is your emotional ability to endure losses; capacity is whether your income, reserves and obligations allow you to do so. A high risk score does not compensate for an imminent cash need.
- Existing exposure: A contra fund may own many of the same large, mid- or small-cap companies already held through other equity funds or direct shares. The label alone does not make the exposure diversified.
- Market outlook: SEBI lists your outlook as an input, but a personal forecast should not override your written plan. A fund selected because a turnaround “feels” imminent can become an undisciplined market-timing bet.
- Financial changes: Marriage, a job change, a new loan, dependants or a change in retirement date can justify a different allocation. Allocation is not a one-time decision.
Because these variables differ, a percentage copied from another investor—or from a fund’s own asset-allocation table—does not answer your question.

1. Assign each goal its own time horizon
List the goal, amount, date and the consequences of a shortfall. Keep essential near-term spending and an emergency reserve in assets whose value is less likely to swing sharply. Consider a contra fund only for capital that can remain invested through a full equity cycle and that is not needed on a fixed date.

2. Set an overall stock, bond and cash mix
Decide the risk level for the goal before choosing an equity style. A contra fund should normally be evaluated as part of your equity allocation, not added on top of an already aggressive plan. If your overall stock exposure is already higher than your plan permits, adding another equity fund increases risk even if the new fund has a different name.
3. Define the job the contra fund would perform
Write one sentence such as “This holding is intended to add a contrarian equity style to my long-term growth allocation.” If you cannot identify a distinct role, a broad, lower-complexity core holding—or no additional fund—may be more coherent. Do not buy solely because a fund has recently outperformed or because its holdings look cheap.
Check the scheme mandate and actual holdings
Read the latest SID, key information memorandum and portfolio disclosure. The mandate tells you what the manager is allowed to do; the portfolio shows what you are actually buying today. Both matter, and either can change.
Mandate questions
- What proportion may be invested in contrarian-theme equity and equity-related instruments?
- Can the manager hold debt, money-market instruments or cash, and within what limits?
- Are there market-cap, sector, derivative, concentration or liquidity constraints?
- What is the stated investment objective and risk level?
- What are the exit-load rules, expense ratio and other charges in the current document?
Overlap questions
- Compare the fund’s latest top holdings with every other equity mutual fund and direct share you own.
- Look for concentration by company, sector, market capitalisation and investment theme, not just identical names.
- Measure the combined exposure. Two funds with different labels can create a large effective position in the same industry.
- Check whether the fund’s current portfolio still reflects the role for which you bought it.
Available evidence supports this review process, but it does not establish the holdings or overlap in any particular reader’s portfolio. You must use current disclosures rather than assume that a historical portfolio remains unchanged.

What the SBI Contra Fund example does—and does not—tell you
The SEBI-filed SBI Contra Fund SID (May 2024) illustrates why scheme limits must not be confused with personal allocation advice. It permitted the following scheme-level ranges:
| Asset category in the scheme | Permitted range in the May 2024 SID | Meaning for an investor |
|---|---|---|
| Contrarian-theme equity and equity-related instruments | 65%–100% | The fund itself could keep most or all assets in its stated contrarian equity universe; this is not a recommendation that 65%–100% of your personal portfolio belong in the fund. |
| Debt instruments | 0%–35% | A permitted range inside this scheme, not a promised allocation or a substitute for your own bond allocation. |
| Money-market instruments | 0%–35% | A scheme limit that may support liquidity or risk management; it does not make the fund a cash product. |
The same document reported assets under management of ₹29,629.21 crore and 1,828,004 folios as of April 30, 2024. Those are dated scheme statistics, not evidence of how much any individual should invest, and they should not be treated as current without checking a newer disclosure. Other providers publish their own SIDs—for example, an Invesco India Contra Fund document dated November 14, 2025—so never transfer one scheme’s ranges, costs or portfolio characteristics to another.
Match the strategy’s risk with your ability to stay invested
A contrarian strategy can require patience. The manager may buy unpopular businesses before the market recognises an improvement, and the thesis may take longer than expected. Ask yourself:

- Would a year or more of lagging a broad benchmark cause you to sell?
- Do you have enough liquid savings to avoid selling this fund for an unexpected expense?

If the honest answer is no, reduce equity risk for that goal or leave the contra fund out. Risk questionnaires are useful prompts, but your cash-flow needs and behaviour under stress are decisive.

Compare costs, plan type and support
SEBI’s guidance distinguishes direct and regular mutual-fund plans. The underlying portfolio is the same, but a direct plan does not include intermediary distribution fees, while a regular plan involves an intermediary and may provide assistance. Compare the current expense ratio, transaction or service charges and any exit load for the exact plan and scheme you are considering.
A lower stated cost is not automatically the best choice if you need help with implementation, documentation or rebalancing. Conversely, paying for support makes little sense if you do not use it. SEBI’s illustrative expense examples are educational and are not current, market-wide rates; use the scheme’s latest disclosures for an actual comparison.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Account for taxes before deciding
Tax treatment depends on your country, investor status, holding period, transaction type and the law in force when you sell or receive income. SEBI specifically recommends considering tax implications as part of investment decisions. A switch from one fund to another can create a taxable event even when the money remains invested, and distributions or redemptions may affect your annual tax position.
Estimate the after-tax result and keep records of purchases, switches and redemptions. For a material decision, confirm the current rules with a qualified tax professional rather than relying on an old article or a generic calculator.

Build a repeatable allocation decision
Use this sequence instead of starting with a target percentage:
- Write the goal and date. Exclude money required for emergencies or inflexible near-term spending.
- Set the goal’s overall asset mix. Decide the acceptable stock, bond and cash exposure before selecting an equity style.
- Review your current portfolio. Record each holding’s value, asset class, sector and major company exposures.
- Read the candidate fund’s latest SID. Note its objective, permitted ranges, risk label, benchmark, costs, exit load and tax-relevant features.
- Test for duplication. Add the candidate fund’s look-through exposure to your existing holdings and identify concentration that would be easy to miss.
- Choose a size you can hold through volatility. If you cannot defend the amount in writing during a downturn, it is too large for your circumstances—or the fund is not suitable.
- Document a review rule. Rebalance when your portfolio drifts materially from its plan, when the goal or time horizon changes, or when your financial circumstances change—not merely because the fund had a bad month.
Rebalancing and monitoring without constant trading
SEBI and Investor.gov both describe review and rebalancing as ways to keep a portfolio aligned with its objectives. Set a calendar review, such as annually or when a major life event occurs, and check whether the fund still fits its stated role. Rebalancing can involve directing new contributions elsewhere, redeeming part of a holding or changing other assets; each action can have costs and tax consequences.
Monitor mandate changes, manager or process changes, portfolio concentration, liquidity, expenses and persistent drift from the fund’s objective. Do not use short-term performance alone as a sell signal, and do not assume that a contrarian label guarantees diversification.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Copying a headline allocation: A scheme’s 65%–100% equity permission describes the fund, not your portfolio.
- Confusing a low price with low risk: A depressed share price or fund return can fall further.
- Ignoring concentration: Several “different” equity funds may own the same companies or sectors.
- Using a contra fund for a near-term goal: A recovery may not arrive before you need the money.
- Chasing recent winners: Past performance does not establish future suitability or returns.
- Choosing a plan without checking costs: Direct and regular plans can produce different net outcomes because of intermediary charges.
- Skipping taxes and rebalancing: A change that looks sensible before tax or transaction costs may not improve the portfolio.
- Treating old facts as current: A 2024 AUM figure, holding list or SID range must be verified against the latest disclosure.
A practical conclusion
The defensible answer to “how much?” is not a fixed number. First make sure the goal has an appropriate total asset mix and that essential cash needs are covered. Then decide whether a contra strategy adds a clearly defined, non-duplicative role within the equity allocation. Use the current scheme documents, holdings, costs and tax rules, and select only an amount you can hold through the strategy’s inevitable periods of uncertainty. If no distinct role remains after that review, investing nothing in a contra fund is a valid allocation decision.
